Bumming Around Turns
into a Business
Bumming around in the water
literally turned into a small business for
Georgia residents David Mallis, Rob Broadfoot, and Don Mock. “As most lake dwellers
know, an upside-down life jacket makes
a pretty cool float. Problem is life jackets
aren’t designed to be worn upside-down.
They don’t fit quite right, they chafe the
legs, and they’re just generally uncomfortable,” Mallis said. “After logging tons of
hours bumming around in the water in upside-down life jackets, we decided to make a
better alternative and call it the BumFloat.”
The three friends have full-time jobs in
the corporate world. Broadfoot and Mock
own an advertising agency called Mock
the Agency in Atlanta. Mallis works for
Motorola Solutions in the Retail Solutions
Group. This summer the trio plan to promote their patent pending BumFloat business in the Hartwell Lake area. “It’s perfect for anyone who likes to bum around in
the water with friends and family,” Mallis
said. Referring to it as the perfect float,
Mallis said the BumFloat allows for total
range of motion in the water. “This is key
when reaching for things on the dock: like
sunscreen or a cold beverage.”
Perfect for lakes, relaxed oceans, and
pools, Mallis said anyone looking for a
calm water spot to relax can “throw ‘em in
the boat, stack ‘em in the boathouse, sport
‘em at the pool, or bring ‘em on vacation.”
In 2010, Mallis and his partners were
on Lake Lanier reminiscing about spending time on the lake as teenagers. “We have
pictures as far back as the mid-1980s with
my family with upside down life vests on,”
Mallis said. “We started with the idea in
summer of 2010, spent 2011 designing the
product and officially launched the company in July last year.”
“We have learned a lot about starting a
consumer business,” Mallis said. “We have
all been in the business to business world
our entire careers. The learning curve
to move to a business to consumer world
is similar but different. Manufacturing
a product overseas is learning experience all of its own. None of us have had
any experience in designing a product or
sourcing, but we figured it out and made
some mistakes. Ultimately it all worked
out and we stayed the course to make it
happen.”
They launched the company as an online
business and personally fulfill all the orders. “For 2014 we are looking to add some
regional retailers as well as some additional sizes in the mix,” Mallis said. “Customers can purchase our product from our
website at www.bumfloat.com or communicate with us via our Facebook page and
Twitter.”. (See ad on the right)

“We thank our customers and the community for the support they have shown

Marcengill said. “We take pride in

stock Mercury fuel line and bulbs,” Marcengill said.
Marcengill and his staff efficiently
repair seats that are torn, sun-damaged, or just need a new color. Using
Sunbrella marine fabrics Marcengill
marine creates custom boat covers.
“Keep your Sunbrella marine cover looking its best by keeping dirt and debris
brushed off,” Marcengill said. “Spills and
stains should be cleaned as soon as they

rinsing with lukewarm water. Air dry only
and never apply heat to Sunbrella fabrics.
Marcengill marine installs boat carpet in

”We install carpet on pontoons and bass
boats along with snap-in carpet. Here at
Marcengill marine, we take great pride
in doing the job right. To properly install
carpet, we remove all seats, stands, etc. and
sand the existing floor before installing the
new carpet. Then everything is put back in
the original spot. When we do you pontoon,
you will have new carpet under the seats
just like it came from the factory.”
Marcengill is a 2011 honor graduate from
North Georgia Technical College with a
degree in marine engine technology.
“We reupholster boat seats, install marine carpet and vinyl flooring and make
custom covers for all types of boats,” he
said. “We use top quality marine vinyl, carpet and fabrics in many different colors and
styles. We offer outboard marine engine and
drive repair and service along with computer diagnostics for outboard motors.”

Fluctuating Water Levels Inspire Business
After having a floating dock on
Hartwell Lake for many years, Kevin Craft
struggled with moving his dock’s position
as the lake water level changed. “When
wheels and hand winches came along it
made it somewhat easier to move the dock,
but it still remained a difficult task,” he
said.” The challenge of configuring an appropriate dock location inspired Craft to
create his Lazy Dock Moving Company, LLC.
“Over the last ten years, there has
been a vast increase in the fluctuation of
the lake’s water level. During the year
of 2007 with the record low water levels on the lake, I had to move my dock
26 times to keep up with the changing
water lines. At that point, I began working on as easier way to move my dock.”
Craft’s creation is an electrical AC (Alternation Current) or DC (Direct Current)
gear motor drive system for driving or rotating a set of wheels on the walkway of
a floating dock for the purpose of moving
the dock toward or away from the shore
line as the lake water levels rise or recede.
“This system includes powered cable
winders to take up or release the cables
to shore as the dock moves,” Craft said.
“This powered dock moving system allows
a single owner or operator to manipulate
the position of a floating dock with minimal effort.” The owner or operator is able
to simultaneously operate from a control
center on the dock the movement of the
powered walkway wheels and the winding
or releasing of the powered cable winders as he or she moves the floating dock.
Craft’s company offers several different
services and configurations of power
docks to choose from including: electric
power moving system (AC), solar power
moving system (DC), electric winches, on
shore cable reels, power and water from
home to shore.”
Craft said there are several benefits
to his powered dock moving system. “It
makes it easier for the owner or operator to move a floating dock. It lessens the
amount of time required to reposition
the dock by approximately 70% to 90%.
It greatly reduces risk of back injury or
muscle strain that is often associated with
the traditional way of manually repositioning a floating dock. It saves you money
in the long run by avoiding out of pocket
payments to professional movers. It allows
women or neighbors to move your dock
easily and quickly if you are traveling for
work or vacation. Please check out the
new video at www.lazydock.com to view
some of our satisfied customers, including
a clip of Mrs. Burroughs move their dock.”
Since the inception of Craft’s creation,
he offers full dock service from moving to
electrical to modifications. “One thing we
have learned is that every dock and customer is different,” he said. “One shoe does
not fit everyone and that hurt us starting
out but we have corrected that problem. “
Craft stands behind customer satisfaction.
“If my company’s dock mover and/
or winch installed on your dock does not
move your dock to your satisfaction, you
may notify us in writing within 30 days
from the date of installation,” he said. “We
will remove the dock mover and/or winches, restore your dock to its original condition, and refund 100% of your money.”
The Company warrants it products from
defects in materials or workmanship for a
period of one year from the date of original purchase. “The company will, at its
discretion, repair or replace any defective
product that is under warranty if the company is notified within the one-year warranty period,” Craft said. “It is agreed that
such replacement or repair is the exclusive
remedy available from the company should
any company product prove defective.”
The Lazy Dock Moving Company, LLC
recommends to all customers to purchase
a yearly maintenance program for $20.00
per month or $240.00 per year. The maintenance program covers the following: moving dock in or out unlimited times, grease
chain, check pulleys, tighten all screws on
collars, check gear box oil level, check tires,
check keyway on shaft, tighten all sprockets and check teeth, and check bearings.
For more information call Craft at 864617-7870 or fill out the form at www.lazydock.com. “We are very proud that our
system has a US Patent now which means
we have a great idea,” he said. “Our business can design or engineer anything
our customers might want for their dock,
please let us know and give us a call.”
“We have to move the dock quite a bit
in and out with very small fluctuations in
the lake levels and because of that moving the dock became a real chore. Our two
kids would have to come down here to help
us. It became an all-day affair with lots of
drama. But now it’s very easy to move.”
Tony and Francis Graham
“When we had to move our dock, it took
at least three people and a lot of unhap-

piness to get this dock moved. There were
three things that were important about this
system. One, I could do this. We didn’t have
to have the whole family, neighbors, and
friends to help move the dock. Second, I’m
an environmental engineer and it was real
important to me that we could utilize solar
power to do this. Our whole dock is powered
by solar. Everything on it is run by our solar
panels and our battery packs. And third, the
willingness of Kevin and his crew to work
through the silt question we had. We have
different wheels than most people. I’m happy to tell you we have been very pleased with
the dock. We’ve had it for almost two years
now and we would recommend it to anyone.
Most of our neighbors are very envious that
we have it and they don’t.” Ginger Ellis

Upscale Villa Welcomes Furry Friends
At his upscale villa in Hartwell, Georgia, Dan Reyen caters to his guests making them
feel like family. Reyen offers his guests comfortable accommodations with regular walks and
specially prepared food. Reyen’s guests are not
traditional villa visitors. The Pet Villa, opened by
Reyen in July 2008, hosts furry, four-legged guests.
“We are an upscale boarding kennel and grooming
facility for cats and dogs,” Reyen said. “We have spacious, over 60 square feet, indoor/outdoor runs with
a doggie door in between. Outside our guests are enclosed by two fences and protected from the sun and
rain by a roof over the runs. Inside, our runs are
heated and air conditioned for the pet’s comfort.”
The runs are cleaned daily with an industrial
grade cleanser and a veterinary grade sanitizer.
“We offer the opportunity for our guests to be
served their own food,” Reyen said. “Every meal is
specially prepared. We tell the owners we will serve
their food to their pet their way. Dogs are taken for
walks in our fenced in woods three or four times a
day.”
The Pet Villa offers cats a stand-alone, self-contained room. “Cats do not see dogs and dogs do
not see cats,” Reyen said. “Cats are provided with
individual three story condos from which they
can either watch TV or the birds in the woods.”
“Every animal that comes into our facility is someone’s child,” Reyen said. “They are furry, four
legged family members. Even though they do not
sit in our lap to watch TV and they do not sleep with
us, we believe that we care for and love the pets as if
they were our own.”
The Pet Villa also has a groomer. “Kim, our groomer
has seven years grooming experience with all types
of dogs and cats and is a former Veterinary Technician,” Reyen said. “She works with large and small
dogs and cats. She is available, by appointment, on
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.”
The Pet Villa sells Victor brand dog food. “The Victor brand is now the premium food
that has been formulated utilizing the very latest
research in canine nutrition,” Reyen said. “Multiple additives that support long term health of
animals are included in Victor that are not found
in foods costing double. Victor is manufactured by
a family-owned Texas based company that takes
pride in every bag.”
Reyen’s love for animals inspired him to create his
upscale pet villa.
“I had a small breeding kennel for English Bulldogs,” he said. “One day while cleaning the kennel, we realized that if we expanded that we could
care for other people’s dogs also. That was the beginning of an 8 year search for the ideal kennel.”
Reyen visited kennels all over the southeast: “learning what they had done and what
they would do differently if they could.”
He came upon his current building which was formerly a kennel in the Atlanta area. “It is a Hounds
Quarters building especially designed for the care
and comfort of dogs and cats,” Reyen said. “We had
it moved to Hartwell where it was reassembled with
a lot of upgrades. If the business continues to grow
as it has for the past 5 years, a building addition is
being planned with executive suites and other upscale amenities.”
The Pet Villa is located on Highway US 29, about
2 miles north of Hartwell GA. “From SC we are
about two miles from the dam,” Reyen said. “Our
actual address is 4074 Anderson Hwy, Hartwell GA
30643.”
For more information call 706-377-6006. “Better yet,
drop in and take a tour,” Reyen said. “We even let
you into the back room.” (See ad on the right)

Local Homebuilder Branches Out and
Offers Property Management
Brian Ramey, owner of Ramey Home
Builders Inc., grew up in Westminster, SC learning about strong work ethics and dedication. As a
teenager, Ramey learned the value of hard work
and the importance of high quality craftsmanship while working for different farmers and contractors. “I was taught to ensure that the people
paying you were well pleased when the job was
done,” he said. “This is about all I’ve ever done. I
enjoy working with my hands and creating something that will be here for years to come.”
Ramey Home Builders Inc. builds all types
of homes but has specialized in log home
construction for the last several years. They
also build and renovate small commercial
and other types of residential properties.
“Our mission is to serve our clients with the
highest quality construction possible and to work
within their budgets to give them the most for their
money,” Ramey said. “We have the most loyal team
of subcontractors and the most experienced construction personnel that you will find in our area.”
Ramey started his business in 1993 with a
goal of consistently providing superior customer service. “I like being able to provide people with something they have wanted for a long
time,” he said. “My main priority is customer
satisfaction.” Since opening his business 20
years ago, Ramey and his team of six employees have built over 110 homes, 90 of which are
log homes, in Upstate South Carolina, Western North Carolina, and Northeast Georgia.
“Building a home is the most gratifying work
I’ve ever done,” he said. “I still ride by some of
the homes we built when we first started out
and feel pride in the fact that they are still in
great shape. We also still do the maintenance,
additions, re-staining, and some of the grounds
keeping for some of our original homeowners.”
Most recently, Ramey extended his
company’s mission of
customer satisfaction by diversifying and offering site
maintenance for the Hartwell Lake area.
“We’ve been doing it on a small scale,” Ramey
said. “I am going to set up a crew specifically
for property management. The problem a lot of
homeowners have mentioned is finding the right
people to do every little job they need done. “ Ramey refers to his site maintenance crew as a one
stop shop for home and property owners. “You
can call us for any type of project or problem
and we will see that it gets done. We have a huge
network of skilled, trustworthy labor that we’ve
worked with for years. Call us and we are the only
one you will have to deal with.”
Proud of his staff of local residents, Ramey said
the property management crew would do everything from grounds keeping to home maintenance.
“We would take care of it all,” Ramey said.
“When people come up for the weekend, their
house would be ready. While people are away, they
would not have to worry about lawn care, roof
damage, plumbing leaks, or even chasing the lake
with their docks.”
Ramey Home Builders Inc. is located at 9330
Long Creek Highway in Westminster, SC. Find
them on Facebook to see before and after pictures
of completed homes. Call (864) 647-1050 or (864)

Fishing forecast - Summer to Fall
By PRESTON HARDEN
Professional Guide, Lake Hartwell

with a 15 pound striper caught on 6-12-13.
Wow, what a difference a wet year
makes! The lake is 2 feet above full pool as
of the first of July. Navigation is easy and
fishing is great. Conditions are more like
spring than summer. Most fish species are
shallower than normal. The cool water is
not pushing fish to deep water.
The hybrids and stripers should be
moving to deep water in the lower half
of the lake. Electronics are important to
find schools of fish in deep water. When
located, these fish will eat blueback herring lowered to their depth on a Carolina
rig. They will also eat big jigs and swimbaits reeled fast through the schools. I call
this technique power reeling as it triggers
an aggressive strike. I also like to keep a
topwater plug ready in case fish school
in the surface. This can happen for short
spurts in the summer and longer in the
fall. Even if they quit they will still come
up for a surface plug from deep water. The

Area Boat Entrepreneur Celebrates
Ten Years in Business
N&C Marine in Martin, Georgia
sells new and used boats and offers full service on virtually any type of boat as well as
boat storage and detailing. “We sell all late
model used boats from Bass Boats, center
consoles, Pontoons, Bow Riders, and Deck
Boats,” said owner Nathan Rhodes. “We
take pride in our used boats. Every carefully
selected used unit goes through a complete
inspection and service from top to bottom.”
A technician tests each boat on the lake to
ensure proper operation of every component of the boat. “We then thoroughly detail each boat to make the boat look as new
as possible. Additionally, we put a 30 day
warranty on every used boat that we sell to
provide the buyer with peace of mind.”
N&C marine also offers a range of new
boats including such quality manufacturers as Bryant Power boats, Xcursion Pontoons, Parti Kraft Pontoons, Skeeter Bass
and Bay boats, and Sea Hunt Center consoles from 17 to 30 feet. “We have our bases
covered so that every customer can find the
type of boat they desire.” Rhodes said. “We
strive on taking every customer to the lake
with their used and or new boat and explain
every aspect of the boat. It is extremely important that every customer leaves us with
the confidence of knowing how to safely operate their new boat and every accessory on
it.”
Five full time certified technicians and
four full time boat detailers are on staff.
“We have the best service manager and
parts guy in the southeast and a com-
bined 50 years-worth of boating knowledge,” Rhodes said.” Taking pride in their
work, Rhodes said his staff makes sure
each job “is done right the first time.”
“We always clean up after ourselves and go
the extra mile to make sure not only are we
fixing the problem correctly the first time
but making sure the rest of your boat or
watercraft is in top notch condition. Boating is supposed to be a stress reliever not
a stress inducer. When our customers take
their boat out on the water we want them to
be confident they can focus on having fun
without fear of their boat breaking down.”
Rhodes started N&C Marine in 2003. “I
first started buying and selling boats in 2001
from my home in Cornelia, GA while attending college. I loved what I did and after
college I decided to open up the business in
its current location in Martin. Though we
have seen some tough years we have grown
continuously since our doors have opened.”
When Rhodes first opened he said he
was a one stop shop from sales to service
to cleaning. “I personally did it all. I was
very nervous about hiring on employees
and still have a tough time letting loose of
a lot of tasks but without the great crew
I have working for me I could not have
grown the business. I honestly feel I have
the best crew in the business. They’re always willing to go the extra mile whether
it’s coming in early or staying till 10:00 at
night to make sure that last customer of
the day is happy with their purchase.”

The Legend of Nancy Hart
By RAY CHANDLER
“Who is Nancy Hart?
It’s a simple enough question, and one
that usually follows the answer to any offhand question of who, exactly, was Hart
County, Hartwell and Hartwell Lake named
for.
The simple answer is that she is a legend,
a lot real, maybe part myth, but all legend,
and one of the most famous figures remembered out of a turbulent and violent time
in the history of the Upper Savannah River
Valley, the backwoods guerilla war fought
here during the American Revolution.
Benjamin and Nancy Morgan Hart and
their children moved onto a homestead in
what is now Elbert County in 1774, buying
about 400 acres of extensive lands on the
Georgia side of the upper Savannah River acquired by the British Crown in 1773
from the Cherokee as settlement of extensive debts owed to Augusta, Savannah and
Charleston merchants. Before that, they
had lived in the Yadkin Valley of North
Carolina, where Nancy was likely born
(though some sources give Pennsylvania as
her birthplace).
Benjamin Hart’s brothers, particularly
his older brother Nathaniel Hart, were associates of the frontiersman Daniel Boone,
also then a resident of the Yadkin Valley. Those Harts went to Kentucky with
Boone. Benjamin Hart, however, chose to
move south to the new lands opened up in
Georgia. Aside from his service with the
Whig militia during the Revolution, little is
known of Benjamin, who in all respects is
overshadowed by Nancy.
Descriptions of her are not flattering.
She was generally remembered as tall, over
six-feet, rawboned, gangly, redheaded, with
crossed eyes glaring from a face scarred
from smallpox. She was also said to be
short-tempered, but utterly without fear.
Illiterate, she was a highly skilled as an
herbalist and in the ways of survival in the
backwoods, including being a crack shot.
She was, in other words, the very image
of a Scot-Irish woman of the 1700s frontier.
The Rev. Charles Woodmason, an Anglican
missionary, ventured into the Carolina
backwoods in the late 1760s and left in his diary vivid portraits of the Scot-Irish people,
those first, second or even third generation
transplants from the Scottish Lowlands by
way of the northern counties of Ireland.
Compared to his usual companions in England or even Charleston, he wrote, they
were savages, crude, uncivilzed, only halftamed barbarians. The women, however,
held the communities together, doing most
of the farm labors while the men hunted
and fished. Woodmason himself
was a fop and a dandy and might
have overstated his case, but
what emerges from his portraits
are a hardy people ideally suited
for the rough existence of the
frontier on the colonial fringes.
In any case, when the Revolution broke out, Benjamin Hart
served in the militia of Wilkes County, as all of northern
Georgia was called at that time.
Nancy, for her part, is said to
have sometimes served as a spy
for the Whig guerillas as well as
occasionally being on hand in a fight, with
some stories placing her at Benjamin’s side
during the February 14, 1779 Battle of Kettle Creek.
The legend of Nancy Hart, though, stems
in large part from one major incident that
also, about a century and a half later, provided evidence that at least part of the
Nancy Hart legend was true.
Some months after the battle of Kettle
Creek, Tory soldiers ventured into the
backcountry to hunt down some of the
Whig leaders, including John Dooley, the
militia commander who was one of the
three Whig commanders at Kettle Creek
(with Elijah Clarke and Andrew Pickens)
and a Hart neighbor. The Tories succeeded
in killing Dooley in his home.
According to the story, six of the Tories,
bent on plunder or more information, arrived at the Hart cabin, where they shot
one of the Harts’ turkeys and demanded
that it be cooked for them. To their regret,
they stacked their muskets in a corner of
the cabin.
Nancy complied with their demands,
HartwellLakeNews
11
and even offered her unwanted guests a
jug of corn whiskey, which was gladly accepted. When the Tories were well into the
jug, Nancy sent her daughter Sukey to the
spring for a bucket of water. She secretly
instructed the girl to blow a cow horn,
which was kept on a nearby stump, to alert
Benjamin, said to be working in the fields
that there was trouble at the cabin.
As Nancy served the intruders, she frequently passed between them and their
stacked muskets. Inconspicuously, she began to pass the loaded muskets, one by one,
through a chink in the cabin wall to Sukey,
who had by this time slipped around to the
rear of the building.
When one Tory finally noticed what was
happening and they all sprang to their feet,
Nancy threatened to shoot the first man
who moved. One Tory did make a lunge for
her, and she pulled the trigger, killing the
man. Taking up another gun, she urged her
daughter to run for help. She shot a second
Tory who made a move toward the stacked
weapons and held off those left until her
husband and several others arrived.

PROGRESS OF ADAPTIVE
MANAGEMENT APPLICATIONS
IN THE SAVANNAH RIVER BASIN
By HERB BURNHAM
President,
Lake Hartwell Association
Longtime members of the Lake
Hartwell Association (LHA) know that we
have for years advocated for adaptive management of the water in the Savannah River
Basin as a means of optimizing its use and
avoiding drastic drops in lake levels. We
understand the need to “balance the basin”
and to maintain realistic minimum flows
downstream of the lakes. However, the current means of determining flows, especially
during periods of drought, are based on
pre-defined levels that are determined by
historical records, and what one may call
“what if ’s”. One example is the “Winter
Rule Curve” that automatically drops lake
levels each winter to allow for the “possibility” of spring flooding…even during periods
of extended drought. Properly applied adaptive management is based on current conditions and near term projections. To quote
The Future of Water by Steve Maxwell and
Scott Yates: “The water managers who will
look the silliest in the future are the ones who
insist that the weather patterns of the past
century are the best predictors of patterns
over the next century. Flexibility and adaptability will be more important than ever.”
The application of adaptive management
in the Savannah Basin will require significant changes in the current regulations and
procedures used by the Corps of Engineers.
Changes that will literally require acts of
congress at the federal level; and since the
water belongs to the states of South Carolina and Georgia, the changes will require legislative action by both states. Several stakeholders, including LHA, have been working
with US Congressman Jeff Duncan (R-SC)
for several years to explore what must be
done to make this happen. Newly elected US
Congressman Doug Collins (R-GA) has now
committed to work with Duncan in the formation of a caucus to address the issue at
the federal level. At the same time SC State
Representative Don Bowen (R-Anderson),
and GA State Representative Alan Powell (RHart) have been actively working the issue
at the states’ level. As a result, a Savannah
River Basin Caucus of senators and representatives has been formed in each state
capital.
Meanwhile, an LHA Memorandum under
my signature was distributed on February
11, 2013, to more than 100 state and federal
elected representatives and stakeholders
in the Savannah River Basin. Its purpose
was to re-energize the support for adaptive management and suggest a relatively
simple implementation scenario. Response
to the memo was better than expected and
a follow up article was released by LHA and
published by several local news media. The
memorandum and article are posted on the
LHA website www.LakeHartwellAssociation.org.
On April 16, 2013, Representatives Bowen
and Powell hosted the first joint meeting of
the new South Carolina and Georgia state
caucuses at the SC state capital In Columbia.
It was very well attended and welcomed with
enthusiasm by the SC senate and house sessions as described later in this newsletter. I
left the meeting with a strong feeling of new
hope that the two states can and will work
together to resolve our water management
issues, and that adaptive management is
finally becoming accepted as the most probable solution.
I had the good fortune of sitting next to
and exchanging thoughts with Dr. Eugene
Eidson during the Joint Caucus luncheon.
He is the principle for development and implementation of the Intelligent River Project
at Clemson University, and presented a brief
update of the project’s status. As a result, I
am even more convinced that the two states
and the Corps of Engineers will miss a huge
opportunity should they fail to design and
implement an adaptive management system
for the Savannah Basin using the state-ofthe-art sensors and real-time access capabilities the Intelligent River Project will offer.
To summarize, I am very encouraged
from the progress we have seen since the
first of the year in getting our elected representatives of both states and the federal
government focused on our water management concerns, and demonstrating progress toward solutions. But we must not be
swayed into thinking we can “relax and let
them handle it”. The real work is ahead for
stakeholders in the Savannah River Basin to
keep advocating for action. It’s going to take
time, money and patience to keep things
moving in a positive and productive direction. LHA is playing a significant role and
needs to continue to do so. Our strength
is in our membership. If you are reading
this article you obviously have an interest in
Hartwell Lake. If you want to make a difference and contribute to its future, there is no
better way to do so than to become a member
of the Lake Hartwell Association. Simply go

Savannah River Basin Joint-State Caucus
South Carolina State Representative Don Bowen of Anderson County
and Georgia State Representative Alan
Powell of Hart County organized a jointstate caucus meeting held at the South
Carolina Capital in Columbia on April 16,
2013. Representative Bowen planned and
hosted the very successful meeting aimed
at beginning to establish a foundation of
common issues regarding the future management of water in the Savannah Basin
to be shared and pursued by the two states.
These two representatives have long been
leaders in water issues, and began organizing the two caucuses months ago. Recognizing that any significant improvements
in water management will require congressional action at the federal level; and
for that to happen both states must also
be in agreement, these state caucuses will
act as steering committees to ensure that
happens at the state levels in a timely and
coordinated manner.
The Lake Hartwell Association (LHA)
was invited to participate and was represented by president Herb Burnham.
Friends of the Savannah River Basin,
LHA’s counterpart on Lake Thurmond,
was represented by Barb and Harry Shelley; and the Corps of Engineers represented by Andy Ashley and Russ Wicke. Dr.
Eugene Eidson of Clemson University, the
director of the Intelligent River project,
was a keynote speaker. South Carolina’s
Director of the Department of Natural
Resources (DNR) Alvin Taylor also spoke
in support of the caucuses’ objectives. Senior staff members for US Congressmen
Jeff Duncan (R-SC) and Doug Collins (RGA) were present to demonstrate support
at the federal level where the two congressmen are also forming a caucus that will
work with the state caucuses.
The Legend of Nancy Hart
continued from page 11
who had by this time slipped around to the
rear of the building.
When one Tory finally noticed what was
happening and they all sprang to their feet,
Nancy threatened to shoot the first man
who moved. One Tory did make a lunge for
her, and she pulled the trigger, killing the
man. Taking up another gun, she urged her
daughter to run for help. She shot a second
Tory who made a move toward the stacked
weapons and held off those left until her

So much for the legend. But in 1912 a crew

Chief of Staff. The House presented the
least a century.. Six of them. Supporters of
the Nancy Hart legend took that as proof.
After the war, the Harts continued to live
on their homestead. Nancy reportedly “got
religion,” in the vernacular of the time,
through a new Methodist society that had
formed in her neighborhood. According to
former Georgia governor George R. Gilmer,
whose mother knew Hart, the indomitable
woman “went to the house of worship in
search of relief. She . . became a shouting
Christian, [and] fought the Devil as manfully as she had [once] fought the Tories.”
In the late 1790s, the Harts moved to the
Georgia coast, near present day Brunswick
and might have lived briefly in South Carolina as well. Benjamin died and Nancy went
to live with her son John, along the Oconee
River in modern day Clarke County, Georgia, near Athens.
Around 1803 John Hart took his mother
and family to Henderson County, Kentucky,
to live near relatives. Nancy Hart spent the
remaining years of her life there. She was
buried in the Hart family cemetery a few
miles outside of Henderson.

Georgia DNR Unwraps Birthday Fishing Bonus For Boat Owners
Georgia boat owners, do we have
a birthday gift for you.
Starting this month, Georgia residents
who have a boat registered with the state
can fish on their birthday and for two days
after as part of their boat registration fee.
It’s a three-day bonus for the state’s some
300,000 resident boat owners. This offer
from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources also covers use of some
DNR shooting ranges, plus some other
sporting privileges. To take advantage of
it, boat owners just have to get outdoors.
The birthday bonus is a three-day resi-
dent combination license that not only
allows Georgians 16 and older who own a
vessel and have a valid, current registration to fish in fresh and saltwater for three
consecutive days (starting on their birthday), it covers many other recreational opportunities. These include fishing at public
fishing areas, accessing state lands where
a Georgia Outdoor Recreational Pass is
otherwise required, hunting small game
and feral hogs on private land, and using
shooting ranges where a WMA stamp or
GORP is needed.
The license is good for the primary boat
owner’s birthday during the three years
the boat registration is valid.
Boat owners must carry a Georgia ID,
such as a driver’s license, and their plastic
vessel registration card to
show proof of a valid vessel registration. Activities
like trout fishing, big-game
hunting and hunting on
WMAs require additional
paid licenses. Saltwater
fishing and migratory bird
hunting require additional
permits, which are free.

SOME SAFE BOATING TIPS
•
By JAMES J. RUDY
Affairs Officer Flotilla 25,
US Coast Guard Auxiliary
This article borrows a few safe
boating tips from the book that we use to
teach our “About Boating Safely” course.
Most boaters, for some reason, opt not to
sign up to take one of our courses. So I
will share in this issue, and in future issues, some of the things that we cover in
this 8-hour course.
Boat traffic jams can be prevented and
traffic will move more efficiently if we all
practice common courtesy at the ramp. Be
sure you observe these simple courtesies:
Prepare your boat for launching well
away from the ramp.
Use at least two experienced people to
launch & retrieve the boat – one to drive
the towing vehicle and one to operate the
boat.
•
Never block a ramp with an unattended boat or vehicle. The boat operator
should move the boat away from the
launch lane immediately after removing it from the trailer. Return briefly
to pick up the vehicle driver once he
or she has parked and is at the ramp.
•
When retrieving, do not pull your
boat into a launch lane until the towing vehicle is at the ramp. The line
is formed by vehicles with trailers,
not by boats in the water. Drop off the
vehicle driver and wait off shore and
clear of the ramp until he or she arrives with the trailer.
•
After retrieving your boat from the
water, pull it well away from the ramp
before preparing the boat to drive
home.
The above sounds like common sense
but you and I have seen these items not followed many many times at the ramp. If you
would like to attend one of our safe boating
courses call me at 864-972-2085 or email me
at [email protected] and I will notify
you of future classes in our Lake Hartwell
and Lake Keowee areas.

Renew your state hunting and fishing
license and find out why
Life’s Better Outdoors
License Sales for 2013-2014 hunting and fishing licenses began on June
17, 2013. You can buy your South Carolina hunting and fishing licenses multiple
ways. Licenses are available in person at
any of the four regional S.C. Department
of Natural Resources (DNR) offices or by
visiting one of the 500 license vendors
across the state. Licenses are also available
24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 1-866-714-3611 or by visiting the DNR
website at www.dnr.sc.gov/purchase.html.
Residents and nonresidents age 16
and older must purchase the required
licenses to hunt and fish in South Carolina. Persons born after June 30, 1979,
must have successfully completed a
hunter education course to obtain a hunting license. To find a course near your or
complete hunter education online, visit
www.dnr.sc.gov/education/hunted.html.
Hunting license applicants who do not
have a hunter education certification may
use a onetime exemption and apply for an
annual Apprentice Hunting License. The
apprentice hunter must be accompanied by
a SC licensed hunter who is not licensed as
an apprentice hunter, is at least 21 years of
age, has not been convicted of a hunting or
hunter education violation or received deferred adjudication of the same, and stays
within a distance that enables uninterrupted, unaided, visual and oral communication with the apprentice hunter and provides adequate direction to the apprentice.
South Carolina hunters and anglers
remain the state’s top conservationists.
Through your purchase of a state recreational hunting and fishing license, combined with excise tax collected on hunting and fishing gear, hunters and anglers
contribute funding to South Carolina’s
wildlife and sportfish restoration projects.
This includes wildlife management, habitat management, research and education.
Without these dollars, fish and wildlife
conservation projects would be very limited in South Carolina.

Area Boat Entrepreneur Celebrates Ten Years
in Business
continued from page 9
“They all work well together and are will
ing to help out no matter what the task. So I
have learned you will never get anywhere is
business without a great group of employees with the same drive and dreams as your
own.”
Rhodes and his team made a huge expansion into the Lake Lanier market with
the purchase of Boating Atlanta in May of
2012. “This purchase has opened the doors
to many of the brands we now carry in
our Hartwell location,” he said. “Boating
Atlanta has been an icon in the boating
business since 1971. I was offered the opportunity in the winter of 2011 and I have not
looked back. I truly enjoy working between
the two dealerships as we look forward to
implementing the expansion plans we have
put in place.
“We already have the drawings and plans
ready for our 13,000 square foot showroom
and offices for our Martin location which
will allow us to keep over 40 boats inside
with climate control. This will also allow
our service technicians to expand the service department three times its size so we
can accommodate the continued increase in
service business we are experiencing.”
“Of course, none of this would
ever be possible without the continued support of our customers and we
want to thank each and every one.”
N&C Marine is located off Hwy 85 off
exit 173 just 2.5 miles north on Hwy 17 in
Martin, GA.
“We work hard daily to update our website www.ncmarineboats.com,” Rhodes
said. “Or you can call us 706-356-2615 or toll
free 888-718-5204. You can send an email to
[email protected].”
“If you have never heard of us or seen our
location please feel free to drop by and see
us. We would love the opportunity to earn
your business.” (See ad on page 9)
