‘SEEK THE CONTRAST BETWEEN
CRAZY VINTAGE FINDS AND
DESIGN ELEMENTS FOR A
PERSONAL ATMOSPHERE’
BLUE PETROL,
COPPER & BLACK
Mix the old-returned-to-its-original luster and at the same
time contemporary Rijksmuseum with the personal
atmosphere of a boutique hotel: that is the basis for the
Night Watch trend. A luxurious and bohemian appearance,
with a hint of surrealism. Old-Dutch art and artisanal
elements are being reinterpreted.
Characteristic elements: comfortable fabrics like velvet and
wool, dark wood and shiny copper, moody colors like blue
petrol, denim, indigo, copper-brown and black.

DOUBLE INTERVIEW
MARIKE ANDEWEG
‘WOW,
I THOUGHT BACK THEN,
THAT COMPANY
DOES SOMETHING
REALLY WELL’
Frederik Roijé
They belong to the generation of young designers: Marike Andeweg and Frederik Roijé.
Both run their own agency and design for Design on Stock. Partner & Sales Director,
Rachel Roubos, asked them in a double interview about their motivation and ambitions.
DESIGN ON STOCK MAGAZINE 2016 • 15
‘BECAUSE I STARTED
MAKING SOFAS FOR
DESIGN ON STOCK,
AN AVENUE TO A
WIDER RANGE
OPENED UP FOR ME’
Marike Andeweg
Rachel: We originally started out with designers
like Roderick Vos and Gerard van den Berg, both
renowned and senior Dutch designers, who still
make beautiful things for us. You’re the next
generation. Both 37 years of age, you are young
for the design world.
Marike ‘That’s true. It’d be a miracle if you’d broken
through at 23.’
Frederik ‘We’re relatively young. Designing is a
profession. Many respected designers are at least
twenty years our senior. I believe that, as you clock
up the years, you get better. You get closer to who
you really are.’
M ‘You also learn to see things in a truer context
and your vision is broadened. I personally feel I’ve
developed my sensitivity for design and that I’m
more confident in listening to myself about what
I believe is beautiful. It is also important that you
don’t go too solo just doing your own thing, but that
you can also take it to the market. This wisdom has
only dawned on me in the last few years.’
F ‘You have to dare to choose and as you become
more mature, this gets quicker and easier because
you know what you think is important.’
Because you have more baggage, it’s easier for
you to put things into perspective and you can
make decisions more quickly?
M ‘But I go on my gut feeling a lot too. If it feels good,
I go for it!’
F ‘I find that a tricky term, gut feeling. Once you’ve
been designing for a while, you instinctively know
more quickly: that’s good.’
M ‘And you know when to stop. It isn’t always
necessary to endlessly work at it. I notice this in
my designs for Design on Stock. Once I see that it’s
16 • DESIGN ON STOCK MAGAZINE 2016
right, a model is made that I then fine-tune. But the
main lines have then been cast. That it’s right, is
something that only experience can teach you. You
need to clock up quite some flying hours if you really
want to master something. But Frederik and I have
now done this.’
F ‘It’s all a matter of craftsmanship. Once you’ve
designed a couple of chairs, you can take the steps
more quickly. Working on commissions and thinking
from the angle of manufacturing – so if something is
technically feasible – are all matters that you have
no notion of in the beginning. When you design for a
customer, you have to embrace their vision.’
That would seem to be quite a challenge:
maintaining your own signature while designing
something that matches the customer perfectly.
Is that something that’s a lot easier once you’ve
progressed somewhat in your career?
F ‘My signature never leaves me, but you do need
to learn to understand the vision of the brand. You
need to remain open to developments and never
rely on the automatic pilot. Part of what makes
our profession so exciting is that you meet a great
diversity of clients, for whom you can make totally
different products.’
o you ever refuse commissions?
D
F ‘Not quickly. A requirement is that there has to
be the right vibe with the person or company. I’m
curious about everything and everyone and I’m in a
phase in which I’m hungry for a lot more.’
M ‘I think that is the case for you, because you have
a wider range of your own. I design basins and so I’m
immersed in the product. (continued on page 19)


If I was to be invited to do work for another sanitary
brand, I’d be competing with myself. Because I design
sofas and cushions for Design on Stock, an avenue
to a wider range opened for me. It really is terrific
to work with the Design on Stock team. I too can
only work with people with whom I feel good and
fortunately I have the freedom to do so.’
F ‘I approached Design on Stock myself. On Roderick
Vos’ Facebook page, it once said that of his Bloq
sofa he made for Design on Stock, more than forty
thousand had been sold in the Netherlands alone.
Wow, I thought, I need to call that company because
they really are getting something right! I had already
seen beautiful products in the collection, but that
was what jolted me into action. There was a positive
click from the very first encounter’
The click was mutual. It’s a pleasant cooperation
for us, because you can really refine an interior.
What I’m most curious about is: which product
are you personally most proud of?
M ‘That has to be the Fuse, it has won three design
prizes in a row. Apart from the prizes, with this basin
I demonstrated my development as a designer, that
I’m open to changes, not just in design and taste,
but also in daring. From my customized approach
I have progressed to a fixed model. Even though
customized work was my formula for success. It was
because I wanted to stimulate myself that Fuse was
born.’
F ‘I was asked for a crazy commission once and the
result exceeded expectations: the Breed Retreat, a
luxurious and comfortable chicken accommodation.
Something completely different from the other
interior products I had made before. It is comprised
of stacked cubes. With a reason, because I really
immersed myself in the chickens. They have a
pecking order, the chicken highest in the hierarchy
gets the highest place. They also have lighting
inside, so that the hens can lay eggs for longer. There
is an idea behind every detail. We are currently
building an enormous one for a Swedish customer,
with heating too. You can buy yourself a splendid
kitchen for the same money.’
What do you still have on your wish list for future
designs?
M ‘I like surprises. Providing it isn’t a car, I don’t
really relate to them, even though you often hear
that it’s a dream for many designers.’
F ‘I think a car would really be fun, there are so many
ugly ones.’
M ‘I agree with you about that. What I would really
like to do is a total interior concept.’
F ‘I’ve been asked to do that a couple of times,
fantastic. But on my own wish list is the exterior of
a house. Secretly I think sometimes: shall I go and
study architecture?’
After graduating, you both managed to set up
successful studios. So you aren’t just creative,
but you also know how to run a company. Do
you have any tips for up-and-coming, young
designers?
F ‘This is going to sound corny perhaps, but do
what you enjoy and what suits you. Following my
internships, I picked up my portfolio and visited
Italy for a trip past my old heroes from the sixties,
including Alessandro Mendini and Ettore Sottsass.
I always admired the architect Piero Lissoni. I want
to do that too, I thought to myself. I’m still hard at
work to achieve this. A studio of your own is fun, but
creatively you can find satisfaction in more areas.
My tip: believe in yourself and invest time in an idea,
even if you aren’t sure that you’re going to win the
pitch. Show it to the world. Dare!’
M ‘If you want to launch something on the market,
stay open to other people’s ideas. Listen to the
people who are manufacturing for you. Design and
manufacturing can really support and improve
each other. Another useful approach is to find a
good internship and get a couple of years of work
experience. After graduating, I worked for the Dutch
furniture brand Pastoe for more than two years. I
still benefit from the network I built up back then. An
advantage of starting for yourself is that you don’t
need to wait until someone approaches you. Both
Frederik and I were quickly rewarded for what we
do. And then I don’t mean in terms of money, but
recognition that fuels your enthusiasm!’ ■

BLUE & GREEN
The trend Wild Wonders brings the outdoors inside through
incorporating monumental green; this could be striking cactuses
and lush ferns. The color turquoise introduces the right tension in
combination with all these shades of green. The passion for wild
animals and tropical jungle green is transformed into natural materials
and organic shapes. Exotic eye catchers emphasize the adventurous
atmosphere.
Recognizable elements are: striking wall coverings, retro influences
from the fifties and seventies, smoked glass and copper, a pallet of
greens with accents in turquoise, yellow and lime.

THE IDEAL SOFA
Lazy or active. Sprawled or upright. The ideal sofa
is different for everyone. This handy checklist
helps in making the right choice.
Byen 1-arm & chaise lounge
A chaise lounge is deeper than an ordinary sofa, so you can lie on it
more comfortably. With the addition of a back cushion, the lounge
can be a comfortable place to sit. Thanks to the low arm, a chaise
lounge is perfect for putting in front of a window, without it blocking
any light or the view. It’s easy to extend the chaise lounge with a
poef.
1 | The style
2 | Lazy or active?
3 | Material Choice
A good sofa lasts for years.
Through its size it really sets
the scene. So be aware of
trends. Choose a timeless
model and give your interior
a different look and feel with
accessories from time to
time. Or turn it all around:
choose a sofa with a striking
color and keep the rest of
the interior calm to retain
balance.
A sofa has to be beautiful,
but most especially comfortable. So try out different
models. Think about how
you like to use your sofa
at home: sitting straight
up, half hanging over it or
perhaps lying on it? Test the
sofas in the showroom in
the same way. Be critical:
is the sofa too deep or too
shallow? Is the height of the
seat right? Can you get up
from it easily? Don’t forget to
test the height of the arms.
The upholstery not only
has a major impact on
appearance, but also
determines the ease of use
and maintenance of a sofa.
Reason enough to not rush
into a decision. Leather has
a reputation for being easy
to maintain, but this is not
always true. Depending on
your lifestyle, fabric might be
a better choice. Explaining
how you will use your sofa
will help your sales associate
guide you into a choice.
26 • DESIGN ON STOCK MAGAZINE 2016
4 | Will it fit?
In the store, furniture
always appears smaller.
So double-check the
dimensions before you place
your order. A good way to
do this is to lay newspapers
on the floor in the form of
the sofa you are considering.
Or make a plan of the room
and draw all the furniture to
scale. Don’t forget to draw
the doors, windows and
electrical sockets.
CHECKLIST
Aikon 1-arm & dormeuse
A dormeuse is similar to a chaise lounge with
no arm on the end, so that a poef can be used
to extend the furniture. A dormeuse is the same
depth as the standard sofa, which means that
it provides good seating without the need for
extra cushions to support your back.
✱
The higher the legs
of the sofa, the
more spacious the
effect. Certainly in
a smaller room, this
can make a major
difference.
Don’t choose too big a sofa,
but not one that is too small
either. In a small space a
couple of large pieces of
furniture can often work
better than lots of small
pieces.
CONSIDER HOW
YOU PREFER
TO USE THE COUCH
AT HOME
5 | The preparation
Corner arrangements are hot.
There is a good reason for this.
A sea of seating doesn’t just look
comfortable, it is comfortable
too. There are lots of options, so
there is always a variation that is
suitable for you.
Aikon Lounge
Aikon Lounge is an elements sofa that can
be combined to create every imaginable
arrangement.
Try to think out of the box.
A sofa doesn’t always have
to be positioned along a
wall. Perhaps off the wall is
a better idea in the space
that is available.
Need style advice?
Collect photographs of interiors
that appeal to your imagination.
Cut them out of magazines or use
Pinterest. It will quickly become
clear which interior style suits
you best.
Whether you are
designing a completely
new interior or purchasing
a single piece of furniture:
bring swatches of fabric, color
samples, and photographs of
your current interior with you.
Heelz 1-arm & switch element
A switch element is actually a second sofa that goes
around the corner. This has an arm on the end, so that
you can flop into it against the arms on two sides. The
sofa has equal seating comfort, however it is positioned.
Bloq corner element
A corner element can be combined with every
other Bloq element, to create every imaginable
arrangement.

the basis for this porcelain cabinet

INTENTIONAL CALCIFICATION
The basis for every item from the
CaCO3 collection is a nylon frame from a 3D printer that is allowed to mineralize in
a cave in the French region Auvergne. The longer the process takes, the thicker the
masterly piece of work becomes through calcification. An idea by Laura Lynn Jansen
and Thomas Vailly.

PORCELAIN Delicate porcelain was
already being made in the ancient Chinese
empire. This was only managed in Europe

immersed itself in the intricate process
that, apart from the precise mixture of
kaolin, quartz and feldspar, demands an
extremely high firing temperature.

TREND FORECAST
by Mirjam Hafkenscheid
It is because Mirjam Hafkenscheid
travels around the world for her trend
forecasts that she is so able to feel with
pin-point accuracy the developments that are taking
place. She is always searching for inspiring people,
places and events. These could be exhibitions or fairs,
but just as easily a garden, exceptional architecture
or street fashions that inspire her. Especially for
Design on Stock, she takes stock of the latest annual
trends in the world of interior design.
‘NORDIC MORNING IS A
PERSONAL FAVORITE. I LIKE
TO SURROUND MYSELF WITH
NATURAL COLORS AND
MATERIALS’
PASTEL PINK
& COFFEE
The Nordic Morning style feels like the beginning of a new
day: the sun that shines promisingly through the windows on
a sultry summer morning and the smell of freshly made café
latte. The interior style is very personal and warm: with lots of
plaids and cushions made from refined, super soft materials.
Characteristic of this atmosphere: natural materials like thick
leather, cork, metal and basket weaves in combination with
pastel pink, orange, fudge and shades of coffee. Blonde wood
emphasizes the Scandinavian touch and feel.

THE CLEAR LINES OF
MARIKE ANDEWEG
✪
AIKON
HEELZ ▲
BLOSH
AIKON LOUNGE 
‘Design on Stock asked for
an archetypal sofa design, a
sofa as a sofa was intended. I
determined the proportions
between the basic shapes very
carefully. A narrow base with
generous seating cushions,
wide arms and striking
detailing in the legs, seen from
the front, was the result. The
relatively long horizontal lines
give the sofa a grand gesture
and subtle stepped-back
shapes in the leg reinforce
that feeling. It is the sum of
these elements that make the
Aikon a beautiful sofa. Really
exceptional!’
‘I wanted to give the Heelz
sofa a surprising and timeless
character. A self-assured and yet
modest sofa. This is expressed
through the comfortable cushions, the characteristic ‘bite’ and
the tension between the low
back and slim arms. The legs are
what actually support Heelz: a
slender element that gives the
sofa its refined appearance. The
horizontal lines ensure that the
legs are integrated seamlessly in
the sofa.’
‘My approach for Blosh was
that the present should
embrace a hint of nostalgia
in a refreshing way. The
collection is based on just the
right combination of color
and texture of the fabrics and
the two buttons complete
the cushions, making them
unique. Either side of the
cushion is a different color.
So flip them to immediately
create a different atmosphere.’
‘Aikon Lounge is the continued
development of Aikon that,
thanks to its comfortable
look and generous seating,
is an obvious choice for a
lounge model. This feeling
is emphasized by the wide
arm that runs into the back
and the flat seat. Through
arranging different sizes and
colors of back and decorative
cushions, you can sit, lounge
or sleep. In three steps you
create your own Aikon Lounge:
first you select one or more
seating elements, then the
back cushions and finally the
decorative cushions.’

CAVALLETTA
BLOQ ▲
‘Cavalletta is an upholstered
chair that looks slender but is strong.
The seat is made of plywood, a
material that has fascinated me for
years. I created an organically shaped
seat shell that is pretty thin, and has
a comfortable elastic back. Those
long legs reminded me of an insect.
Hence the name; cavalletta means
grasshopper in Italian. The beauty
is also in the details, such as the
beautiful plastic caps under the legs
that have been specially developed
for this chair.’
‘Bloq, minimalist design with
maximum detail, to me is truly
‘one of a kind’. Tight on the outer
sphere and very comfortable on the
inside.’

SLIDE
✪
‘For the Bloq poefs, I wanted
to create the possibility of a
temporary 'side table'. The Slide
design was the result: a tray that
has been folded from a piece of
sheet material and which can be
placed over the poef.’
COLLECTION
✪ Roderick Vos (1965)
designed the first sofa of Design
on Stock and that was not the
last of it. His contributions to
the collection range from a tray
to sofas of varying sizes. Slide
is one example: 'For several
stools in the collection I wanted
to create the possibility of a
temporary 'side table'. Slide was
the outcome. It is a smart and
universal design.’
BIMBOM ▼
BimBom is a collaboration by Roderick Vos and his partner Claire
Vos Teeuwen. Roderick Vos: ‘From childhood, the magical circus
world made a huge impression on me due to the colorful shapes and
attributes.' Claire Vos Teeuwen: 'The graphic patterns that I saw there
as a child, the diamond shapes provided the inspiration for BimBom.
In developing our ideas, suddenly everything fell into place. The
triangular patterns sort of mirror a diamond.’
BLIZZ
SOLO
BLOQ XXL
T-TRAY
‘Blizz has been a game with
block shapes in which I've
been looking for the ideal
balance between form, line
and ergonomics. During the
creation of this model, I forced
myself to ‘design' as little as
possible. Blizz needed to be
a sofa, as a child would draw;
sitting in its simplicity.’
‘Solo needed an understandable,
artistic design; traditional,
but also modern. These
contradictions required
much expertise during the
development process. For the
comfort of this luxury armchair,
memory foam was added to the
seat. This gives support in the
right places, causing your body
to unwind, completely.’
‘My personal challenge was
to design a Bloq lounge sofa
derived from the original yet
with a different and distinctive
form. The sleek lines of the basic
shapes combined with the soft
cushions makes the XXL series
especially unique.’
‘The T-Tray is made of 100%
aluminum. The top can be slid
over the seat of a sofa, so it
takes up little space, and the
cast aluminum support in the
T-Tray is very stable. Now you
can be sitting on the sofa with
nothing on the seat beside
you.’

BYEN ▲
SKY
CLOUD
JEWEL
‘For years, Design on Stock
wanted to include a sofa in
its collection that was also
suitable for smaller living
rooms, a real ‘urban sofa’.
Then we came up with the
idea of creating a sofa with
a typically organic design,
combined with voluminous
cushions. The narrow arms
have a beautiful curved shape.
The sofa lends its name
Byen from the Norwegian
word for a city. Byen has an
unambiguous visual language:
the curve of the arm has been
reiterated in the shape of
the leg. Another interesting
detail: the legs have been
constructed so that they
appear to be separate from
the sofa, creating a very light
look.’
‘The cushion Sky is one of
still waters run deep; the
more you look at the design,
the more details you see. For
example, the extremely fine
fabric has been woven with
three colors of yarn, lending
to its exceptional depth. The
shiny accent strips give Sky a
rich, timeless appearance. A
perfect cushion for creating
accents. Sky is available in
quiet and contrasting color
combinations.’
‘A square cushion was missing
from the Design on Stock
collection. With Cloud, this is
a thing of the past. This is just
the kind of cushion you grab
if you are nestling on the sofa.
Topstitched seams create an
almost downy effect. There is
plenty of scope for variation
thanks to the two colored
sides and the topstitched
strips.’
‘The magical pattern of
the velvet cushion Jewel is
reminiscent of a kaleidoscope.
For the flip side we chose woven
wool in quiet colors. A nice detail
is that there are no seams along
the sides, so that the fabrics run
over into each other.’

RAINBOW
‘Rainbow is not just striking
thanks to its beautiful watercolor
look, its size is eye-catching too.
Not unimportantly: Rainbow
provides extra support to the
small of the back. The daring
colors are a beautiful contrast
to the plain denim linen on the
flip side.’
COLLECTION
✪ Talent is given an opportunity to pitch ideas
at Studio Foorumi (2015). Foorumi means
platform in Finnish. Designs are perfected
here with the assistance of experienced
product developers. Following the chair Rila
and cushions Sky, Rainbow, Jewel and Cloud
we proudly present the sofas Byen and Byen
Lounge and lounge chair Nylo by this design
platform.
NYLO
‘With Nylo, the challenge lay in
developing a lounge chair with
an organic form and excellent
sitting comfort. Following a
number of prototypes, in which
the seat and back ran over
organically into each other,
we unfortunately came to the
conclusion that this didn’t
deliver the most comfortable
result and we tightened the
angle of the seat and back.
To preserve the organic
appearance, we experimented
with stitched seams.
The result: a revolving lounge
chair with organic shapes
and a clean design exterior,
nonchalant upholstery inside
and excellent sitting comfort.
The poef is of course derived
from the lounge chair, and has
the same leg with four feet,
creating a synchronous whole.
Thanks to its international
design appeal, the Nylo is
equally at home in a minimalist
or a nonchalant interior.’
BYEN LOUNGE ▲
RILA
‘Byen Lounge is derived
from the Byen model. It
was a challenge to design a
generous family sofa without
losing the essence of Byen.
The double row of separate
back cushions creates the
appearance of extra depth
for the sofa, lending Byen
Lounge a luxurious and
international appeal. And
with extra cushions it is a
simple matter to vary the seat
depth. Because the slender
arms wrap around into the
back, Byen Lounge has a large
seating area, without it having
to be an extremely deep sofa.
The rear of the model has also
been given a lot of thought:
the corners wrap around,
so Byen Lounge can also be
positioned in an open space.’
‘The idea behind Rila was to
create a slender, archetypal
chair that was comfortable to
sit in and is an embellishment
for an interior at the same
time. The sled foot and rear
of the frame lend a visual
calmness to the clear play
of lines. The Rila’s shell has
a clean exterior, the inside
appears almost nonchalant
thanks to the soft seat
cushion. In combination with
the sprung back support, the
result is a comfortable and
elegant chair.’

✪
GOLA
LIMEC ▲
YAKA
DJENNÉ
‘My original idea for Gola was
comfort. I also wanted to
create furniture that enclosed
the user, so that the person
could feel the warm embrace
of the furniture. In the same
way as the collar of a blouse
encircles your neck. Gola is
a lounge chair with a side
chair execution, a ‘side lounge
chair’. A side chair providing
the comfort of a lounge chair,
so that there is no need to
retire from the table after
dinner.’
‘In fleshing out the Limec, my
inspiration was to design an
armchair for a long evening read.
I altered the proportions of the
Gola and I’m happy to say that
the result is the Limec, a comfortable lounge chair in which to
spend an entire evening.’
‘The third chair that I designed
for this line is Yaka. I had to
envision what Gola would look
like without arms, without losing
comfort. Yaka has become slightly narrower, so that the proportions of the chair are correct
without losing the possibility to
combine with Gola.’ ‘This half-brother of the Limec
lounge chair got a narrower back
and has been angled slightly.
This creates a real lounge chair
feeling. Just like most of my
models, the Djenné has a ‘fluffy’
appearance thanks to the loose
upholstery. Djenné is a combination of flat areas and flowing
lines with, as a detail, a line of
stitching in the front that runs
under the loose seating cushion.
The feet follow the beautiful
lines of the lounge chair. Djenné
is named after a city in Mali
that is famous for its traditional
mud architecture buildings: a
combination of straight and
round shapes, just like with this
revolving lounge chair.’

ATUM
AMRA
MAUA ▲
‘Laying down simple lines looks
easy, but there is probably nothing more difficult. While travelling through Egypt, I saw the
graves and temples of Carnac,
and thought: didn’t they make a
splendid job of that a couple of
thousand years ago. I designed
Atum with these influences in
mind. The chair’s flowing lines
are decisive: the side seams run
from underneath right through
to the top of the chair back and
arms. A special feature is the
sprung back support. It is flexible, allowing it to adapt to your
back and, in doing so, provide
great comfort.’
‘With equally fine lines as Atum,
but brushed stainless steel legs
in view, is Amra. In this model,
too, you can see the references
to the temple columns in the
lines, curves and proportions.
The name, just as with Atum, has
its origins in Egypt: Amra is the
name of a burial temple, Atum
stands for the creator god and
ancestor of the Pharaohs.’
‘The idea for Maua had been
in my head for a long time:
A round clean shell in which
a comfortable, nonchalant
form has been nestled. The
back support reminds me of
petals; Maua means flower
in Swahili. The lounge chair
is a combination of clean
round and nonchalant soft
forms. The back is round,
allowing you to adopt any
sitting position. The head
cushion moves with you. The
shape of the foot is a logical
progression of the design.’

great many successful forms
of seating carry his name.
This is because his designs
look good upholstered in

are practical too. A typical
Gerard van den Berg idea is
the sprung back support. ‘It
follows your body contours,
providing an extra level of
comfort.’

Design in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. His
sought-after furniture designs earned him a
Red Dot Award in 2011, pretty much the Oscar
of the design world. For Design on Stock he
designs seating that together forms a family.
His signature, with many diagonal lines and
slender silhouettes, makes his work readily
recognizable. ‘Cutting convex and concave
lines is something that really appeals to me,
because this never fails to produce other
surprising shapes. But the ergonomics of the
human form are ever guiding.’
PENTA
BARRAN
MOKA ▲
TOMA
‘These days, you see many
contemporary buildings with
cutaway surfaces. Based on a
cube, you can cut into surfaces
making very interesting
shapes. This creates different
areas of light and shade and,
as such, a play of light and
darkness. This reminded me
of my father’s profession,
a diamond cutter. While
polishing, the number of faces
increase and you create a
strong, facetted shape. These
gems are beautiful and wellproportioned no matter the
size, just like my dining room
chair Penta. The name says it
all: five sided.’
‘Catering to the current trend
of entertaining family and
friends at home, raised dining
tables or a bar in an open plan
kitchen, I designed the stool
Barran. Barran has a specially
formed bucket seat, so that
the proportions of the model
and slender appearance are
preserved. The emphasis
is on ergonomics. After
all, in essence you want a
comfortable seat, so that you
can socialize at the table long
after dinner.’
‘I started with an image of a
coffee sack bound with ropes.
Which explains the name
Moka. The constriction in the
middle of the back creates a
tensioned bugling along the
sides. Resulting in a bundled,
soft and curved form.’
‘Lounge chair Toma is a
progression of the Moka chair.
The comfortable and luxurious
appearance is thanks to the
soft, richly upholstered seating
cushions and the generous
dimensions. Robust feet lend
the piece an air of masculinity.
I can envisage the Toma
standing in a fraternity.’

‘A bucket is a familiar
implement. But not much
has ever been done with
it. I’ve never seen a design
bucket or an object inspired
by a bucket for example. I
thought it would be fun to
play with. I transformed the
characteristic shape of this
ancient implement into a
functional and slender design
for a side table. Thanks to the
handle – just like a bucket –
it’s easy to move around. Tub
is manufactured from powdercoated steel, finished with
ash (wood) or cork inlays and
offers extra space in two layers
for presenting and serving.
Perfect next to the sofa or a
lounge chair.’
‘Mason is based on the
dimensions of the bricks that
are used to build many Dutch
houses. Mason is another
word for a bricklayer. Thanks
to the slender play of lines
it’s ideal as an independent
standing element, but with
multiple elements a whole
wall can be ‘laid’. So you
can create a personal, wallfilling composition. I would
personally fill it with the
treasures I have collected
from my travels. I like to give
the objects I am fond of a
nice place. But Mason is also
a cupboard for your books,
magazines or a place to
display your prized bottles of
wine.’

TOITOI
KOYO
‘I drew my inspiration for this
multi-functional stool from a
visit to Brancusi’s studio in Paris,
France. Constantin Brancusi was
a Romanian artist who often
employed elementary forms;
he repeated them and tried to
eliminate unnecessary elements. I
too did this with ToiToi. I wanted the
stacking feature to be reflected in
the name: ToiToi.’
‘The Koyo, that draws inspiration
for its form from Japanese tea
pavilions, can be used in portrait
or landscape. The Koyo can
also be incorporated as part of
a ceremony. Apart from as a tea
or coffee table next to a chair or
sofa, you can use it next to your
bed (portrait or landscape) to lay
down a book. You can make it as
personal as you like.’
DING
‘I love the form of the human head,
and the oval shape is part of that. I
see Ding as a pillow on the couch,
and support for your side or under
your legs. The shape is striking and
contemporary making Ding a very
useful accessory.’

FUZZ
BULB
‘The starting point for the
series Fuzz was to optimize the
brightness of the Jacquard weave
by the use of contrasting colors. In
the design, a gradient results in a
clear graphic pattern. The name
Fuzz refers to the blur effect. The
back and front of the wool plaids
have a different color image, which
makes them extra surprising. With
three color themes - Pink, Blue and
Yellow - they really add something
valuable to the interior. Fashion for
furniture I call them.’
‘The idea for Bulb was to mix
colors as much as possible within
a tight pattern. Even though
there are only four basic tones
in the process, it has a very rich
color palette. This feeling is
enhanced by the color changes
within the lines. The final image
is a soft, geometric pattern that
is reminiscent of Dutch flower
fields, hence the name Bulb.
There is a choice of three colors:
Pink-Orange, Green-Yellow, and
Purple-Blue.’

‘I have always been fascinated
by craftsmanship. I like to
incorporate the knowledge and
beauty that products from bygone
times emit, and their touch, in my
work. I transform artisan objects
and add a hint of new technology
and refinement. Our designs
are - stylish and functionally well
thought out - reflections of the
sobriety of the Dutch culture. Just
look at the interpretation of the
ancient bucket in our side table
