Happy Kids
When you see the children of Ellison House
on an outing at their favorite restaurant, or
dressed in matching t-shirts at a Spurs game,
or marching along the merry trails that
meander through Fiesta Texas, you might
mistake them for little United Nations goodwill ambassadors. But listen to the laughter,
excited conversation and occasional sibling
bickering and you can see that they are a
family. A proud branch of the Mission Road
Ministries family.
serves as liaison with the children’s schools,
said, “We had no color higher than green …
nothing greater for them to strive for.”
Ellison House, she says, “offers a step better
than green.” To live at Ellison is the ideal,
the pinnacle. Kids attain the ultimate
independence within their reach — helping prepare, serve and clean-up after meals;
hanging up clothes and cleaning their rooms;
communicating their needs; and the golden
ring: making choices.
Ellison House is one of five homes on the
MRDC campus — and it is designated for
higher functioning children. It is an honor
to live at Ellison where the responsibilities,
privileges and opportunities encourage
maximum independence … and the choices
offer a mighty alluring perk.
Penny said, “I’ve never seen greater joy
than when we told the kids they
could choose their room color,
ceiling border and bed cover. They
were allowed to design their own
environment … huge, exciting,
wonderful choices.” The colorful
results may stop visitors in their tracks
— Superman blue walls, zooming
racecar borders and other unusual
decorating techniques. But free choices
and bold colors equal happy kids.
A Color Higher Than Green
When Ellison House was founded less than
two years ago, it was an experiment of hope.
Residents in all homes on campus may earn
or lose privileges based on a color level system
of green/yellow/red. Penny Simone, who
Kids Who Volunteer
Once a week, they make an outing to the
public library, and on Sundays, the
congregation of University United Methodist
Church embraces them as family. The kids
make frequent field trips to sports events,
retail shops, restaurants and other fun-filled
places. They even volunteer at Morningstar
Ministries — helping feed, water and care for
the animals at the sanctuary.

Cowpokes ‘n’ Cowgirls… $190,000 to go!
Shindig’s Baaaack!
If you wanna have a boot scootin’ good
time, with lip smackin’ fixins, toe-tappin’
tunes and some of the gosh-darndest nice
folks you’ll ever meet, then join the MRM
family for Shindig 2009. Here’s the when
and where …

Shindig’s boastin’ some mighty fine
ranch hands — the folks at Kinetic
Concepts are presentin’ sponsors and
we’re powerful grateful for their support.
And Co-Chairs Marty and Denise Landon
and Laura and Bill Mason are dustin’ off
their boots and jeans, puttin’ on the dog,
and hopin’ to lasso in all the folks who
care about MRM. So Saddle Up and join
the stampede.
We’re aimin’ high for the 702 Mission
Road kiddos and adults with developmental disabilities who’re countin’ on a
whoppin’ $460,000 in net proceeds to see
to their needs right now and yonder.
Don’t miss out on the good times.
Save the date … and sneak a peek at
live auction items at www.shindig.missionroadministries.org. Downright amazin’. All items are available for online absentee
bidding prior to the event. Want to know
more? Lend a hand? Make a gift?

With just a few months to go until completion,
the Jesse H. and Susan R. Oppenheimer Center
is emerging as a star element on the MRDC
campus. You can nearly hear the chatter and
laughter that soon will be forthcoming from
its classrooms, spacious gym and community
meeting area.
On schedule and slightly under budget, the
entire project, which includes the Oppenheimer
Center, the transformation of the old gymnasium into a covered outdoor pavilion and
improvements to campus fencing, gates,
lighting and paved surfaces is just $190,000
short of its funding goal … a number that has
narrowed from our previous report thanks to
generous donations and value engineering to
maximize every dollar.
When completed at the end of December,
the Oppenheimer Center and related improvements will invite children in the neighborhood
to join our children for after-school and
summer programs — services not currently
available to children on the south side who have
developmental disabilities. It will also expand
and consolidate space for the growing adult day
services program, which has soared from 30 to
80 clients.
We can’t wait! We hope you’ll be able to join us
for community activities in this wonderful new
addition to our campus … and we thank you
for gifts that will help us meet the remaining
$190,000 budget shortfall.

THANK YOU!!
Mission Road thanks the AT&T
Foundation for their generous grant
of $22,369 to install a brand new time
and attendance management system
for our 340 employees. After a two
year process to find and install the best
system available for our needs, we are
pleased to report the new software and
equipment interfaces with Mission
Road’s payroll provider and has saved
us time and countless resources. From
less paperwork, to fewer attendance
mistakes, greater efficiency and continuous access, we are pleased with the
flexibility and variety in dealing with
shift differentials that this new system
has provided us! THANK YOU!
PAWS-itively Perfect!
Heaps of hugging and unabashed happiness fill the house when
PAWS pays a visit. Volunteers from PAWS for Service believe in the
transformative power of puppy love to exemplify God’s unconditional
love … and so they bring their four-legged friends to visit the children
and adults at MRM homes and the Unicorn Center.
Love is the key. The dogs do not judge. They do not ask why a person
is in a wheelchair or cannot speak or may look a little different. They
only respond to the love they get in abundance from their friends at
Mission Road. And the children and adults delight in the acceptance
and affection the dogs bring.
Everyone wins. Many thanks to PAWS for spreading joy to our
MRM family.

SUPERMAN BLUE WALLS
(continued from cover)
The eight Ellison House residents range in age from 8 to 17
and all attend school. Most have moderate to mild mental
retardation. Julie O’Toole, Director of Children’s Services, says,

her, guided her behavior and moved her to Ellison where she
has blossomed, found happiness and self-control, and is doing
exceptionally well in school. The teachers and her housemates
love her. O’Toole said, “Here, surrounded by others who

they are fulfilling their potential, gaining independence, learning
to function in society and preparing for future success. To find
