Best in the South-West
Congratulations to each of the winning builders in this year’s Master Builders
Bankwest Building Excellence Awards for the south-west region.
Although the building industry is operating at less than full capacity, another
record number of entries were received in the region. In addition to Bunbury,
entries came from 21 other towns – from Harvey in the north, Pemberton in the
south-east to Augusta in the south.
Each of the 207 entries were judged by a panel of two registered builders, solely
on the quality of workmanship demonstrated throughout the whole building
project.
In addition to special sponsors’ awards, entries were judged in the following
categories:
l Contract Homes from under $200,000 to over $3m
l Framed Construction from under $600,000 & over $600,001
l Renovations/Additions from under $100,000 & over $100,001
l Display Homes from under $200,000 to over $400,001
l Commercial/Industrial projects from under $1m to over $12m
l Multi-Residential Developments under $750,000 to over $1.5m
l Commercial/Industrial Buildings Alterations & Additions under $1m
and over $1m
The total value of projects entered this year equated to over $131 million covering
an area of just under 66,000m2 of construction which highlights the prosperity
of the region. In each category, regardless of the contractual value, the focus
was on the quality of construction such as brickwork, plastering, painting, tiling,
cabinet making, glazing and carpentry. According to our judges, the margins
between many of the finalists was difficult to separate.

Master Builders Awards showcase the best the building industry has to offer
clients. To each builder, their project is “a winner” as it reflects the culmination
of many months of planning, hard work, co-ordination of specialist trades and
attention to detail in delivering the finished product. As these awards provide
an independently assessed benchmark of standards, the real winners are, of
course, homebuyers and corporate clients who benefit from builders striving for
continual improvement and in being adjudged the best from one year to the next.

School’s Administration and MultiPurpose Building (MPB) was undertaken
by Glenn Harbison, of Harbison
Construction. The end result is a
beautifully constructed timber-clad/
rendered building. The outstanding
feature is the MPB “square round room”
- the interior ceiling is a circular series
of rakings ridges and valleys clad with
acoustic ply, giving it a concertinaed and
flower-like effect.

was used including rammed limestone
walls, tilt panel, and brickwork. The

floor boards were used through the main

The Prince of Wales Hotel is known by
the Heritage Council of WA as having
“rare construction history”. Originally
a residence built by convicts, it was
converted into an operational hotel in the
1880s. Over a hundred years later the
Hotel was worthy of major upgrades and
restorations, commencing with it’s front
bar and entry areas.
Within the constraints of heritage listing,
this refurbishment and renewal project
involved taking the building back to what it
was- restoring it to it’s former glory.

expansion involved the full refurbishment

Axon & Hardietex Base sheets to provide
a distinctive finish.

imeco is one of WA’s leading
multi-discipline construction contractors
with operating divisions in Civil,
Mechanical, Electrical, Maintenance and
Commercial Building. Supporting these divisions are
a number of in-house fabrication facilities including
a state-of-the-art Cabinetmaking workshop located
in Bunbury.
The Cabinetry outfit has been an integral part
of the business since its inception in the late 70’s.
Initially born out of the need to fabricate formwork
for precast concrete for the Civil Division, it now
provides carpentry and cabinetry services to all five
divisions across the entire State, as well as many
other builders and the general public.
The Cabinetmaking Workshop is proud to have
cultivated some of the State’s leading craftsmen and
artisans, with many of these employees being with
the company for over 20 years. Cimeco ensures all
apprentices or new employees are trained to the
highest level to maximize their potential.

Cimeco has the capacity to handle any size
project, be it a new kitchen for Mr and Mrs Jones,
or the entire fit-out out of a major hospital such
as the South West Health Campus. With state-ofthe-art computerised equipment and specialised
capabilities across all aspects of cabinetry, no
project is too difficult.
“We have not pigeon-holed ourselves into
one specific type of work,” boasts Workshop
Manager Travis Italiano, “we have the capabilities
to undertake both internal and external cabinetry
and joinery which is most evident in the recently
completed Augusta Margaret River Civic
Administration Centre (pictured above) where we
undertook the entire scope of work”. Cimeco’s work
on the Civic Centre included supply and installation
of fixed furniture, decorative painted panels and
timber veneer wall and ceiling panels. Also, acoustic
wall panels, decorative feature light boxes, flat panel
supply of workstations, exterior solid timber wall
cladding and sun shades, timber canopy and solid
stone or acrylic bench tops, all manufactured at
Cimeco’s Bunbury facility.

subcontractors and apprentices in this year’s Master
Builders Bankwest Building Excellence Awards for
the South West region. The standard of entries
was once again extraordinary, which demonstrates
the continued pride and dedication to quality work
that Master Builder members through all trades,
residential and commercial construction have to
their craft.
Recently I was fortunate enough to attend the Master
Builders Bankwest Housing Excellence Awards in
Perth which featured metropolitan homes along with
the best of residential construction from each of our
representative regions these include the Kimberley
& Pilbara, Midwest, Goldfields & Esperance, Great
Southern & Southwest. The overall winning home
from each of these regions competed for the title of
Country home of the year. This year the South West
was represented by Wholagan Building Inspiration
for a magnificent home built to perfection near
Yallingup taking out the top honors. During the last
5 years 5 Southwest projects have taken home this
prestigious award, confirmation that quality trades
working together are constructing some of the best
projects in the state right here in our South West
region.
With another year of judging now behind us, the
South West regions best residential and commercial
projects for 2012 have been determined. It has
again been a very difficult challenge for our judging
panel with margins between winning and finalist
projects being very close within a number of
categories. The culmination of this process resulted
in a magnificent awards presentation the Master
Builders Bankwest Building Excellence Awards held
at the Quay West Bunker Bay Resort the resultant
winners are displayed proudly throughout this
impressive feature.
Winners are featured by category and price, and
have been judged solely on the quality of traditional
trades including Carpentry, Plastering, Cabinet
making, Painting and Bricklaying.
In addition to our category winners, entries were
