ConcreteCornholeCompetition
Objective
TheobjectiveoftheConcreteCornholeCompetitionistouseyourknowledgeof
concretemixdesigntoconstructacornholeboardthatwillbeusedinafunandfriendly
cornholetournamentatthe2016ASCESoutheastStudentConference.
Eligibility
One(1)teamperschoolwillbeallowedtoparticipateintheconcretecornhole
competition.Teamscanconsistoftwo(2)tofour(4)students.Onlyone(1)ofthe
studentsmaybeagraduatestudent.
BoardDimensions
Theboardistobefour(4)feetinlengthandtwo(2)feetinwidth.Theholewillbesix
(6)inchesindiameter.Thecenteroftheholewillbenine(9)inchesfromthetopedge
andone(1)footfromeitherside(SeeFigure1below).Alldimensionshaveatolerance±
0.25in.Therearenominimumormaximumthicknessrequirementsfortheboard.

ThecornholebagswillbeprovidedbyTheUniversityofAlabamaatthetimeofthe
tournament.Theywillbe6in.x6in.andweigh15±1oz.Asupportstructureforthe
boardswillalsobeprovidedandisdetailedintheplayingfieldsection.Thesupport
systemwillbeconstructedwith2X4sandhavealipatthebottomthatwillstopthe
boardsfromslidingdowntheincline,asdemonstratedinFigure4.
MixDesign
TeamsarerequiredtofilloutthemixdesignsheetprovidedinAppendixAandsubmitit
tothejudges.
a. CementitiousMaterials
Teamsarepermittedtouseanyofthefollowingcementitiousmaterialsaslongasthey
meettheASTMstandardforthematerial:
• PortlandorHydraulicCement(ASTMC150/C595/C1157)
•
FlyAsh(ASTMC618)
•
SlagCement(ASTMC989)
•
SilicaFume(ASTMC1240)
Thewatertocementitiousmaterialsratio(w/cm)mustbe0.35orgreater.
b. Aggregate
Aggregatesmustpassa½in.(12.7mm)sieveandberetainedona#200sieve.The
concretemustcontainatleast30%aggregatebyvolumeofconcrete.
c. Admixtures
ChemicaladmixturesthatmeetASTMC494and/orASTMC260areallowed.
d. Reinforcement
Teamsareallowedtousefiberreinforcement(ASTMC1116)orreinforcementgrid.
Judging
Eachteamcansubmitonlyone(1)boardforjudgingandtournamentplay.Teamsmust
submittheirboardandmixdesignformtothejudgesonFridayatatimeandlocationto
beannounced.Boardsmustbepickeduptheendoftheday(timetobeannounced),
andTheUniversityofAlabamaisnotresponsiblefortransportingboardstothesiteof
activitiesonSaturday.
Boardswillbejudgedonaesthetics,conformitytodimensions,andadherencetomix
design.
Aesthetics
Teamsareencouragedtodecoratetheirboardsascreativelyaspossible.Theboardcan
befinishedwithanyvarietyoftextures,stains,andsealers.Thenameoftheuniversity
yourepresentmustbedisplayedontheboard.Nostickersordecalsareallowed.
Tournament
TournamentPlay
Asingleeliminationbracketwilldeterminetournamentplay.Seedingwillbedetermined
accordingtoeachteam’s“AestheticsSub-Total”and“TechnicalSub-Total”asshownin
theonthescoringsummarysheet.Byeswillbeawardedtotheteamswiththehighest
scoresandasdictatedbythenumberofteamsparticipating.

GamePlay
Eachgamewillbeplayedtotwenty-one(21)points;thefirstteamtoreachorexceed21
pointswillbedeclaredthewinner.Aroundconsistsofone(1)playerfromeachteam
throwingallfour(4)bags.Eachgamewillconsistofhowevermanyroundsittakesfor
oneteamtoreachorexceed21points.
Bagsthatlandontheboardandstayontheboardareworthone(1)point.Bagsthatgo
throughtheholewillbeworththree(3)points.Bagsthatbounceontotheboardfrom
thegrounddonotcountandmustberemovedbeforethenextbagisthrown.Bagsthat
wereontheboardandpushedoffbyanotherbagdonotcount.Attheendoftheround,
pointswillbetotaledforeachteam,andthedifferenceoftheteams’pointswillbe
awardedtotheteamthathadthehighestscore.Eachroundwillresultinonlyoneteam
beingawardedpointstotheiroverallscore.
Forthefirstround,theteamwiththehigherseednumberwillgosecond.Theteamthat
scoredthepreviousroundwillstartfollowingrounds.Ifnopointswerescoredina
round,theteamtoscorethelastpointsgoesfirst.
Teammemberswillbeonalternatesidesofthepitchandstayinthesamelane.Players
willalternatethrowingbags(oneatatime)untileachplayerhasthrownallfour(4)of
hisorherbags.Bagsmustbethrownunderhand.Ifaplayercrossesoutsideofthe
pitchersbox,thatbagdoesnotcountandcannotbere-thrown.
FortheTier4andTier5games,teamsmustscoreexactly21pointstowinthegame.Ifa
teamexceedsthe21points,itsscorewillgodownto15points,andnormalgameplay
willresume.

Aesthetics
Boardaestheticswillbejudgedbasedoncreativity,originality,andoverallqualityof
design.Eachteamiseligibletoreceive20pointsbasedonaesthetics.
ConformitytoDimensions
OncethejudgesreceivetheboardsonFriday,eachboardwillbemeasuredforlength,
width,thickness,holediameter,andthepositionofthehole.Theteamswillberanked
basedonboardthicknesswiththethinnestboardgettingtheentire30points.Allother
pointswillbelinearlydeterminedinadescendingorder.
