I am part of a generation that has never known Pekin without the Marigold Festival, and it’s been as much a part of my experience growing up here as the schools I’ve attended and the houses I’ve lived in. I remember watching the Miss Marigold pageant with wide eyes as a young girl, and handling calls to our house from hunters eager for an extra clue to find the medallion my dad had hidden. Watching the parade, meeting my grandparents at the pork chop tent, shopping at Art in the Park with my mom - all of these are traditions that have morphed into memories over the years. I believe the weekend after Labor Day is a time when our community shines its brightest, with a display of unmatched civic pride and community spirit and fellowship. It is a weekend for reunions, supporting local charities, and just having fun. Serving as Chairman of this year’s festival has been an honor that I can’t put into words. The Marigold Festival committee is a group of dedicated and talented people whom I am privileged to know. But as the committee, we simply put the framework in place. The most important part of our festival is the people - the people who volunteer their time to staff booths or oversee events or sell food and the people who come out to enjoy all there is to see and do. So whether you live here in Pekin, or if you have moved elsewhere and are visiting this weekend - or maybe if this is even your first visit to our city, I say “Welcome to our home,” and I hope you enjoy everything the Pekin Marigold Festival has to offer. In their discussions, they decided it would be a way to honor Pekin’s favorite son, Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen. Throughout his life Senator Dirksen was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time in his garden. David Burpee, owner of the Burpee Seed Company, learned of Dirksen’s strong appreciation for gardening. He contacted Dirksen on numerous occasions, encouraging him to introduce legislation that would name the Marigold the official floral emblem of the United States. Unfortunately, Dirksen’s efforts were unsuccessful. But until his death, the Marigold held a special place in his heart. What better way for the people of Pekin to remember Senator Dirksen than to name their festival after something so close to his heart, his beloved flower, the Marigold. The first festival was held in 1973, and now, young and old look forward to our 40th festival. With events and fun throughout Pekin over a span of several days, it is unlikely Everett Dirksen or the members of the original Marigold Festival Committee could have imagined what a fantastic event the Marigold Festival would eventually become! They pit their interpretive skills with the Medallion Hunt Cluemeister who has carefully hidden the small disc somewhere on public property and then releases “clues” on a daily basis. The clues carry doublemeaning, veiled references, and carefully disguised hints all designed to bring out the CLUE UPDATES 346-HUNT “DaVinci Code” enthusiast in all of us. Families, friends, co-workers and even neighborhoods collaborate in an attempt to discover the Medallion’s hidden location. The finder will discover that a very nice prize - often a nice trip for two awaits them courtesy of our generous friends at Pepsi. But, as history has shown, it is the excitement of being the one person who “has figured it all out” that often represents the greatest prize of all. “Thank you, Pepsi, for 26 years of support!” GOOD LUCK The Hunt always commences the Monday before Labor Day. Clues are released Monday through Saturday, giving hunters the rest of the holiday weekend to make their finding. If not discovered by Labor Day, clues will continue being released daily beginning Tuesday after Labor Day. Remember that the Medallion will be found on PUBLIC PROPERTY - whether within or contiguous to city boundaries, or owned by Pekin Public body. Hunters do not need to dig up or climb up to find the Medallion. It may be carefully camouflaged or hidden within something easily accessible and not requiring disassembly. The chosen hiding place is always selected with safety and accessibility given the highest consideration. The band started as the brain child of Dr. Eric Reinertson a local Obstetrician/Gynecologist. Originally, a smaller group of musicians were assembled to “jam” once a month or so with some classic rock tunes and eventually play for the office Christmas party. Over the course of a couple of years several musicians joined the band from various connections. Some have come and gone and the mix now includes about two or more of everything; singers, keyboards, trumpets, guitars, saxes, trombones, etc. It is hard to say how many people actually are in the band as it keeps growing and we have up to 16 full and part-time members. All of the Loose Shoes members either work or go to school full time in the Pekin area. THREE of the members are local physicians, which occasionally gives rise to the name “The Doctors’ Band”. This band has a strong rhythm section that is accented by a full brass combo and several exceptional vocalists. CLASSIC ROCK Covers and songs from the 1940’s to current hits are the predominant presentation material. This is a band you will simply enjoy watching and listening to on a relaxing afternoon in the park. Playing on the Ameren Marigold Festival Showcase Stage – Sun., Sept. 8 from 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm Straight from Nashville, Tennessee, “the august” is a force to be reckoned with; an eclectic mix of country meets the windy city. Jacky Dustin is where country should be at with her Tammy Wynette meets Tina Turner twang soul vocals; she is original and should be the voice of Country today. Originally from Chicago, Jacky, Tim Good and Wojtek Krupka moved to Music City in 2009, where they met up with Cameron Clarke. Hence the name of their most recent album, “Dear Chicago, Love Nashville.” That CD, as well as their two others can be found on iTunes and other online stores. “the august” brings a little Funk, Blues and Rock and Roll to this tight small band. Jacky is not an auto-tuned twangster; she is the real deal with incredible strength, presence and drive. Not to be outdone, Krupka, principle cowriter with influences like Neil Young and Tom Petty, plays an important role in “the august” sound. “the august” has shared the stage with a variety of great musicians, including Toby Keith, Lionel Richie, Leon Russell, and The Drive-By Truckers. “Listening to the august is like listening to old Johnny Cash tunes on modern radio: The sound is nostalgic-country complete with its own special twang.” – Chicago Daily Herald. (Visit their website to get a taste of their music and style at theaugust.com/wordpress/epk or www.reverbnation.com/theaugust) Playing on the Ameren Marigold Festival Showcase Stage Sun., Sept. 8 from 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm Dragon Spotlight Talent Show Winners – Winners from the Pekin Dragon Spotlight Talent Show held last February will have the opportunity to perform on the main stage at Pekin Marigold Festival. Some of these talented High School performers will have the opportunity to show their talents. Come out to show your support of these young people of Pekin. We are sure you will enjoy it. It’s the only safe course. You give me no choice. I tell a joke and you convert it into an international incident. I coin a whimsical term and you make it appear I am at odds with the President. I indulge in some polite banter and you interpret it as a split in the Party.” Everett Dirksen PDowntown Never Leave Unhappy! ekin Professional Detailing Car Wash 309.346.5312 Engine Cleaning Shampooing • Waxing Stoller Dentistry Home of the $8.00 Exterior Car Wash Soft Chamois Cloth!
