Population, 2,178; of village, 271. i t is situated near the ninth lock of the Grand Canal, and close to the
line of Coras Iompair Eireann, of which it is the nrst station from Dublin. It was anciently named
Cluain-Doican, and by the Danes Dun-awley. The village consists chietly of one irregular street, of small

PHCENIX PARK.
pAmc pionnuisce.
The Phoenix Park, contiguous to the N.W. boundary of Dublin city, and N. of the river Lifley, comprises si
area of l 760 statute acres, and is about seven miles in circumference. Irish antiquarians derive its name
from a spring of limpid water, in Irish fionn-uisge, pronounced fin-uiske, and gradually corrupted mtc
phoenix. The greater portion of it formed part of che possessions of the Knights Hospitallers, and on toe
suppression of the monasteries was surrendered to Henry VTII., and was afterwards enclosed for » oeet
park by the Duke of Ormonde, in the reign of Charles II. Several additions were subsequently made
it and the whole was laid out in an ornamental manner by the Earl of Chesterfield, when Lord Lieuteiia i
Df Ireland, who also erected in it a pillar thirty feet high, surmounted by a phcenix rising out of the flam-.in allusion to its popular name, and caused it to be thrown open as a place of recreation. There is airsplendid equestrian statue of General Gough. In the Park are also the Wellington Testimonial, a loft]
obelisk of granite, 150 feet high; and the Zoological Gardens.

RATHFARNHAM.
Rathfarnham, a parish and village in Uppercross and Rathdown baronies, Dublin county, four miles south
from the G.P.O., Dublin, comprising an area of 2,581 acres. Population, about 10,000." It is situated on
the road to Whitechurch. and near where the Military-road commences that crosses the mountains into
Wieklow county. The village was included in the City of Dublin under the Local Government (Dublin;
Act. 1930. as from the 1st October, 1930. The Roman Catholic Church is a large building in the main street.
The Loreto Convent, in the vicinity, is a modern building, attached to which there is an elegant chapel, &
female free school, also a ladies' boarding and day school. The Novitiate College of the Augustiniani
and St Coiumba's Colleg? are in the neighbourhood.
There is also a Dispensary and a District
Justice Courthouse. The bridge of Rathfarnham, over the river Dodder, is several hundred yards from
the village, the approach to which is rising ground, thickly shaded in summer by the trees of the demesne?
on each side. The neighbourhood abounds in pretty seats and villas, commanding rich views of the
Dublin mountains and bay. At Grange is situated the " Priory," the residence of the famous John Philpo'.
Curran. The castle of Rathfarnham was built by Archbishop Lottos in the reinn of Elizabeth. One of the
entrances to the demesne, fronting the Dodder, is in the style of a Roman triumphal arch. The entrance
to the castle is by a portico of eight Doric columns that support a dome painted in fresco with the sisrn.of the zodiac. Ballyboden, a village in the parish of Whiteohurch, is about one and a quarter milefarther on, and comprises an area of two acres. There is a Postal and Telegraph Office in Rathfarnham.
