CEO Message
Investing in our future is at the heart of everything we
do at Bethany. First and foremost, we invest in our
future by diligently serving our youth. They have all
experienced trauma in their lives. Bethany has long
provided these youth with shelter, food, clothing,
education, case management services, and
opportunities for socialization and recreation.
In the last fiscal year we added increased medical
services on site through our campus clinic, a newly
renovated state of the art learning center for youth
educational support, and we diversified our spiritual
services to better and more fully reach our youth.
Investing in our future means our staff recognize and understand that trauma has played a
significant role in the lives of our youth. Our clinicians and cottage teams are implementing
best practices in our field and identifying new ways we can best serve our youth. Bethany
employees are fully trained on how to respond to youth and how to provide coping tools in a
supportive environment. With a new online database, our employees can now access many
training topics to enhance their work experience and enable each person to feel confident in
the service they provide our youth.
Investing in our future also means investing in Bethany’s
infrastructure. An energy audit completed in the spring
of 2015 resulted in a great need for renovations to make
our buildings energy efficient. Other service projects were
completed throughout the year by churches, companies,
and individuals in our local community. These projects
helped beautify our campus and increase safety for our
youth, staff, and visitors.
We are thankful to everyone who helps to keep our youth
safe through projects like our energy upgrades, increased
staff support and training, and new youth services. Looking
to our future, Bethany is totally committed to doing
everything we can to help our youth find
hope, love, comfort, food, shelter, and
safety at Bethany.

Bethany News
Bethany has been a partner in ministry with the
United Church of Christ for over 150 years. This
past year, the Heidelburg Association of the
Pennsylvania Southeast Conference of the UCC
moved Bethany’s Bausman Memorial Church,
Womelsdorf, from a standing church in the UCC
to a chapel. This move allows Bethany to offer
inter-faith services on campus. In addition to our
UCC partners, the following churches supported
the youth in our care:
A-Flame for Gods Ministries, Reading
Akron Mennonite Church, Akron
Bethany Lutheran Church, Stony Creek Mills
Bethel Dunkard Brethren Church, Bethel
Calvary Lutheran Church, Reading
Community Evangelical Church, Sinking Spring
Fleetwood Bible Church, Fleetwood
Friedens (Peace) Lutheran Church, Myerstown
Glad Tidings Assembly of God, West Lawn
Hebron Mennonite Church, Richland
Holy Cross Family Ministries, North Eaton MA
Koinos Community Church, Reading
LCBC Church, Manheim
Second City Church, Harrisburg
St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Glenmoore
St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, Robesonia
St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Reading
St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Rockville
Center NY
St. Michaels Church, Hamburg
Today’s Church, Laureldale
Trinity Lutheran Church, Robesonia
Trinity United Methodist Church, Lickdale
Womelsdorf Mennonite Church, Womelsdorf
This past year, we received a grant from
the Metropolitan Edison Sustainable
Energy Fund of the Berks County Community
Foundation to complete an energy audit.
Through an extensive study of over 20
buildings completed by STV Incorporated,
Douglassville, it was concluded that Bethany
could save nearly $130,000 a year with some
energy conservation upgrades.
The audit identified the following
upgrades: switch our 30-50 year old oil
furnaces to natural gas; install attic
insulation; replace windows with energy
efficient windows; and complete electrical
upgrades.
The cost of these upgrades is just over
$800,000. However, with the savings of
$130,000 a year it made “cents” for Bethany
to invest in this project.
In June 2015, due to declining enrollment
and losses, ABC Child Care, Inc. was closed
on Bethany’s campus. ABC Child Care, Inc.
provided day care and education services
for children 6 weeks – kindergarten age.
We thank our ABC Child Care families for
allowing us to provide great care for your
children over the past 15 years.
Our Community Engaged
In the 14-15 Fiscal Year, several new partnerships were formed between
Bethany and our local community businesses. From hosting fundraisers to
completing service projects on our campus to making significant financial
contributions these companies have found creative ways to support Bethany
programs and services. We are thankful for our new partnerships and look
forward to forming more in the upcoming year!
Bethany Programs
Bethany Children’s Home is Sanctuary®
Certified and follows the Sanctuary
model of trauma-informed care in all of our
programs. Each program is hosted on our
scenic campus in Womelsdorf, PA. Bethany
follows the house-parent model; and there
are On Call Campus Supervisors (OCCS)
available 24 hours a day.
Bethany offers Residential and Intensive
Residential, Short Term, and Independent
Living Programs. We also have an
Emergency Care Shelter Program. To learn
more about our unique programs and how
we are helping our residents please visit our

Bethany Staff
Hi! I’m Janet Durkin and I celebrated
my 3-year anniversary in October 2015 as
the Director of Human Resources at
Bethany!
When I meet people who have
never heard of us, I explain that Bethany
provides a safe home away from home for
youth who have struggled in their previous
environments. One of the most significant
things about the Bethany community is the
people who make it up. Our staff love what
they do, and they work tirelessly to
advocate for the residents we serve.
In my time here, I have learned so
much from the wildly talented people at
Bethany. Every day is an opportunity to
learn something new. I value the
relationships with those I consider mentors
and who have helped me grow. Through
this growth, I was able to attain my Senior
Certified Professional credential!
In Fiscal Year 14-15
Bethany had 144 Full
Time Employees.
This is UP 53 % from
last FY!
Bethany is growing!
Youth Services
Bethany’s Therapeutic Services Team provides state of the art individual and
group interventions for youth. Because not all youth respond to one specific
therapeutic process, we present a multi-disciplinary approach. Youth in our
care are offered many opportunities to address physical, social, cognitive and
psychological placement issues.
Bethany offers the following services:
Social services and Case Management with licensed clinicians
Spiritual services with our campus chaplain
Music Therapy with a board certified music therapist
Art with our resident artist and potter
Recreation with dedicated, experienced staff

Youth Feature: Meet Crystal
Hello! My name is Crystal
and I have been at Bethany
in the Residential Program
for 1 year and 3 months. One
thing I do in my free time is
Craft for a Cause. Crafting
for various causes has been
really helpful for me, because
I don’t think about myself or
my troubles much while I’m
crafting. It makes me think
about others even more and
helps me feel better about
myself.
I also love singing
for church through Music
Therapy! Singing is one of
my passions and I love music
in general, it helps me cope
with many things. My love for God is great, and just knowing that we have that type of
relationship helps me sing for God and I am dedicated. Putting music and God together
gives me strength.
I’ve grown so much in my time here that I don’t even know where to start! When I
first came to Bethany, I had lots of trust issues. And now, I can trust appropriately. When
I first came here, I could not cope with my feelings. And now I am able to cope with
anything and everything and find help if or when I can’t. Also, I never thought I was
worthy of beauty or loving - and now, I love myself and I’m pretty sure everyone loves me
too.
I wish everyone could know about Bethany. Bethany is a placement for kids,
mostly in their teens who need help or need something to change in their lives.
Bethany is helpful if you use it to your advantage. If you don’t try to work on
yourself when you are here then its not going to help you. But if you really want to
achieve your goals, you just have to be willing and Bethany will help
you get there.
My future goal is to get as much education as possible, stay
focused and get good grades. My career goals are to go to college
for herpetology and go out and work as a vet with reptiles and
amphibians for zoos. And, I know I can achieve that! I also see myself
in a loving home, here or anywhere else.

Bethany
is ONA
Bethany hosts Safe Space meetings for youth and staff to
engage in safe, healthy, uplifting practices designed to support
an Open and Affirming community.
“I love the Safe Space groups with Mr. Dustin because I know
that in that time and space I can really be myself and be
supported by people who understand and care.” -BCH youth
On April 28, 2015 the Board of Directors for Bethany Children’s Home in
Womelsdorf, PA unanimously voted to become “Open and Affirming.” An “open
and affirming” organization fully welcomes people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual,
transgender, or questioning into the full life and leadership of the organization.
On the same day, the Open and Affirming Coalition of the United Church of Christ
accepted Bethany’s ONA Welcoming Statement and Covenant. As a certified ONA
Ministry, Bethany Children’s Home is listed with the UCC’s national registry of ONA
churches and organizations. This helps youth, partners, and agencies network and
connect with supporters nationwide. It also helps individuals and other churches or
organizations searching for health and human services through the UCC’s website
to find Bethany and learn about specific services.
To learn more about how Bethany is living into our status as an ONA ministry of the
UCC, visit our website: bethanyhome.org/about-us/open-affirming
The Bethany Farm
Bethany’s Dairy Farm housed 61 milking cows for the 14-15 Fiscal Year. Our farmer is
increasing our herd, so in addition to the milking cows we had 80 heifers! The cows are
milked twice a day and each produces about 90 pounds of milk per day. The farm produced
approximately 2,000,000 pounds of milk for Clover farms this past year. We have about 100
acres of growing fields to raise corn, hay, and soybeans as feed for the cows. In the FY we
added a new, larger milk tank and new mattresses for the milking cows. As a for-profit
entity, the farm has produced milk and raised crops since 1873.
Bethany Springs
In 2012 Bethany Home formed Bethany Springs, LLC (Springs).
Springs is a for-profit entity of Bethany Home. Springs sells fresh
spring water from Bethany’s mountain property to DS Waters.
The revenue generated from sales support Bethany’s therapeutic
services.

Planned gifts made to Bethany Children's Home provide for the future of troubled youth Bethany
serves. Your contribution may be undesignated or designated to our endowment. Today, the
endowment subsidizes many of our specialty programs and services so we can provide for the
growing number of youth requiring relief from abuse and crisis situations.
These funds make BCH a “home” filled with trust, love, and compassion.
You might consider Planned Giving through any of the following options: A special gift in your will,
a life insurance policy, or with retirement plans. Or you can make a gift and receive an income. Bethany offers:
Charitable Gift Annuities - $1,000 minimum gift
Deferred Charitable Gift Annuities - $1,000 minimum
Pooled Income Fund - $2,000 minimum gift
Charitable Remainder Trusts - $50,000 minimum gift

In July 2014, Bethany, at the request of the Federal Government, opened the Helping
Hands program to provide refuge and reunification to children fleeing Guatemala,
Honduras and El Salvador. The children, aged 4-16, were seeking refuge from severe
poverty, gang violence, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. Bethany provided 188
youth shelter, food, clothing, safety, basic medical care, education, religious services,
socialization, and case management. We are pleased to share that through your
support and generosity Bethany reunited 183 youth with their families throughout
the United States. We have truly been blessed by your outpouring of love to support
these children. Thank you!
