GREETINGS FROM THE
TCCES BOARD OF TRUSTEES PRESIDENT
Dear TCCES Friends and Families:
The 2013-14 school year was a busy one for TCCES, and certainly for the board of trustees. As we continued working toward our board
goals, several priorities emerged including a capital campaign for our new middle school, system unification, fiscal responsibility, leadership
and, as always, faith integration.
With the announcement in November of the pending capital campaign for the new middle school, TCCES embarked on an exciting
partnership with our Neenah-Menasha parishes to build a state-of-the-art facility to replace the aging Seton Catholic Middle School. St.
Mary Catholic Middle School will position TCCES for growth in all areas, and locating the new building on the campus of the high school
will provide increased educational opportunities for our students. Our educators are working hard preparing to leverage the advantages of
the shared campus when the school opens its doors in the fall of 2015. In addition, all TCCES leaders continue to work purposefully to
deliver a unified and educationally cohesive PreK-12 experience for our students.
The focused effort of the board over the past several years in the area of financial accountability continues to move us forward with steady
progress. The 2013-14 fiscal year ended with TCCES in a better financial situation than in the previous five years or more. Steps have been
taken to preemptively address fiscal challenges that lie ahead, and we continue to focus on increasing our annual fund and reducing our
reliance on the line of credit. By approving the system’s participation in the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program, TCCES also opened a new
avenue for families to afford a quality Catholic education.
Upon the board’s decision to end the temporary arrangement of a combined president/principal position, Patrick Batey elected to retain
his leadership as principal of the high school. A selection committee composed of board members, a representative from the diocese and
a recruitment specialist, was established to search for a system president. The committee continues to actively work to find a suitable
professional to fill the role.
A priority that every member of the board of trustees takes to heart is integrating faith into every aspect of TCCES. As a Catholic school
system, our faith is literally the reason that we exist. In recent months, I have been taking the golden shovel that I used in the middle school
groundbreaking ceremony to board and administrative meetings. I refer to it as a symbol for digging deep to the bedrock of the Christian
faith on which our system is built, and I encourage everyone in the system to strive to uphold that foundation, whether it’s in discussion,
teaching, parenting, studying or decision making.
Please join the TCCES Board of Trustees in continuing to pray for our students, school families, educators, pastors, supporting parishes,
alumni and community members. Together, and with God’s guidance, we will continue to move forward in faith.
Jeff Berg, President
TCCES Board of Trustees
THIS JUST IN!
TCCES is pleased to announce
that Mrs. Helen Englebert will
be our new system president,
effective in late 2014.
USING TECHNOLOGY IN
THE TCCES CLASSROOM
Throughout this report are boxes that highlight different ways in which TCCES
educators are using technology to enhance the educational experience of our
students. Learn about how TCCES students are proficiently using online resources,
software, technology-based equipment and communication tools every day.
STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
We believe in the value and importance of Catholic school
education as an integral part of the Neenah, Menasha, and
surrounding area parish communities.
Recognizing the critical importance of partnering with family,
Church, and community, our role within these communities
is to provide our children from preschool through high school
with a strong educational foundation anchored in our faith,
and based on the Beatitudes.
COMING SOON: ST. MARY CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
One indication of the board’s focus on unity is the decision by the board to adopt St.
Mary Catholic Schools (SMCS) as the new system name, fully effective July 1, 2015.
This carefully chosen name echoes the history of more than eighty years of Catholic
education in Neenah-Menasha, more fully expresses our Catholic identity and reflects
growth in enrollment among students from communities in addition to Neenah and
Menasha. Along with the system name, the names of the high and middle school will be
changed to St. Mary Catholic High School and St. Mary Catholic Middle School. The
elementary schools will be known collectively as St. Mary Catholic Elementary Schools,
with each building retaining its campus name (St. Gabriel Campus, St. Margaret Mary
Campus and St. Mary Campus). In addition, all teams and students of all ages will be known as Zephyrs!
The beautiful new St. Mary Catholic Schools (SMCS) logo, which retains the colors of the previous insignia and
incorporates the cross as a symbol of our faith, was unveiled. The new system and school names and logos will be
phased in gradually, used initially only for things pertaining to the 2015-16 school year. By July 1, 2015, we will
officially be St. Mary Catholic Schools.
TEN-YEAR TREND IN ENROLLMENT GROWTH CONTINUES
Twin City Catholic Educational System continues
to defy the local and nationwide trend of declining
enrollment in Catholic schools. In fact, over the
past ten years, the total number of students in our
Preschool-12 classrooms has increased by a total
of 204 students. This decade-long enrollment
trend reflects the value that TCCES families place
on excellence in education, faith, co-curricular
opportunities and community. We appreciate
the sacrifices made by families from communities
around the Fox Cities including Menasha, Neenah,
Sherwood, Greenville, Darboy, Hortonville,
Oshkosh, Appleton, New London, Kimberly,
Larsen, Fremont, Kaukauna, Hilbert, Butte des
Morts, DePere, Combined Locks and Weyauwega.

SMC VICTORIOUS AT
VEX NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
The St. Mary Central High School Technology and Engineering Club
(TEC) enjoyed another stellar season in VEX Robotics competition. With
the VEX Toss Up World Tournament as a finale, the SMC teams finished
the year with 44 awards from competitions where teams from SMC
regularly faced each other in the final rounds. The club conceded defeat in
only two tournaments throughout the season.
Team Syntax Error won the state tournament, and is the reigning national
champion after taking first place in the U.S. Open VEX Robotics
Championship in Omaha, Nebraska in April. Additionally, three SMC
teams finished in the top ten in the nation, earning several prestigious
awards including tournament champion, division finalist, division semifinalist and third place in the driver skills challenge.
The St. Mary Central program was one of the very first VEX Robotics
Teams in the state, is very committed to community outreach and
mentoring, and, for nearly ten years has earned unparalleled success in both
national and international competitions.
THANKS FOR YEARS
OF DEDICATION
At the close of the 2013-14 school year with the retirement of elementary
librarian Pat Dreschler and SMC English Teacher Jean Zuleger, TCCES
bid farewell to two teachers who fostered in students a love of reading and
composition.
Pat Dreschler was a librarian in TCCES Elementary Schools for the
past nineteen years, with the majority of her tenure spent at St. Mary
Elementary School. A welcoming presence in the schools’ libraries,
Dreschler was known for encouraging students to treat books with respect
and handle them with loving care. Dreschler believes that students are
never too old to have a story read aloud to them, and she always had a
positive attitude that was passed along to her students. In retirement, she is
looking forward to enjoying the change of seasons with her husband, Vern,
and spending time with their grandchildren.
Jean Zuleger was an English teacher at St. Mary Central for 29 years.
In addition to teaching an array of courses, she was also instrumental in
several key curriculum improvements, created the SMC Writer’s Manual
and initiated the beloved Santa/Elf letter project. Zuleger was also the head
coach of the highly successful SMC Forensic Team, with 90-100% of her
students earning medals at the state level every year since 1998.
Zuleger was honored twice with both the King’s Daughters Outstanding
Teacher Award and the St. Mary Central Leadership Award, and also won
the Herb Kohl Teacher Fellowship Award. In addition, she was named an
honorary alumna in 2006.
Jean Zuleger and her husband, Lyle, are the proud parents of six SMC
alumni and seven grandchildren.

TCCES WELCOMES FUND DEVELOPMENT/COMMUNITY
RELATIONS DIRECTOR
In early 2014, Twin City Catholic
Educational System welcomed Michelle
Dejno to the advancement team in
the important role of TCCES Fund
Development/Community Relations
Director. Dejno works in cooperation
with TCCES administrators and
community partners in the areas of
donor development, fundraising and
relationship management. She brings
years of business collaboration skills to
the table as a result of her executive level work with clients in the
marketing profession. A UW-Eau Claire graduate, she is focused on
identifying and pursuing third source fundraising opportunities and
strengthening relationships with TCCES volunteers and community
partners. She is also collaborating at the diocesan level to share
and receive best practices while working closely with the business
department to standardize and simplify fundraising policies and
procedures.
Dejno joins the advancement team which was responsible for
the solicitation and intake of nearly $973,000 in annual fund
donations, Zephyrfest and Jumbo Gumbo net proceeds, new
admissions and grants. The department also handled tracking and
thanking donors last year for $4 million in fine arts education center
capital gifts, as well as recruitment and enrollment of students,
internal and community communication, grants and awards, and
alumni relations.
WISCONSIN PARENTAL CHOICE
—A NEW CHOICE FOR TCCES
In late 2013, the TCCES Board of Trustees voted to pursue
participation in the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program (WPCP) in
order to provide the opportunity for a Catholic education to more
area families. TCCES personnel actively and confidentially assisted
interested families in completing the application required by the
Wisconsin Department of Instruction (DPI), and conducted the
requisite verification. The number of TCCES’s verified applicants
ranked in the top three among schools and systems from across
the state, thereby eventually qualifying TCCES for 28 “vouchers”
for our five TCCES schools. The DPI selected and notified the
recipients, who then accepted or declined the opportunity. With the
2014-15 school year, there are seventeen elementary, seven middle
and four high school students attending TCCES schools with the
support of this program.
WPCP provides an exciting opportunity for the 28 selected students
to grow with a well-rounded, faith-based TCCES education in a
nurturing academic community. In addition, by supplementing the
cost of educating those students for whom other sources of tuition
assistance would likely have been used, WPCP adds well over
$100,000 to the system’s income, thereby benefiting all TCCES
families.
TCCES TEACHERS HONORED
Each year, TCCES presents awards to faculty and staff members
who are nominated by their peers or school families. In the spring
of 2014, the St. Frances Xavier Positive Influence Award was
presented to Brad Curran and Michael Hickey. Curran is the
band director for the three elementary schools and Seton Catholic
Middle School. He inspires young musicians with his passion
for music and for developing students’ talents. The TCCES band
program enjoys remarkably high participation in band, in great part
thanks to Mr. Curran’s enthusiasm and efforts.
Hickey, a third grade teacher at St. Margaret Mary Elementary
School, was recognized for continually going above and beyond to
make learning relevant, interesting and fun. He promotes personal
growth, inquisitiveness, spirituality and life-long learning as the
path to future success.
The St. John Baptist de la Salle Outstanding Teacher Award was
presented to St. Mary Central Math Teacher Marilyn Peterson.
Mrs. Peterson can be found daily, before and after school and
during her lunch period, helping her students with math. She also
sets up multiple weekend classes to help students prepare for AP
exams, and hosts an ACT prep class during the lunch hour that
runs for weeks. In the classroom, she makes personal connections
with her students with encouragement and feedback that bolsters
student confidence. Mrs. Peterson shows a level of dedication that is
inspirational to her students and peers.

TEST RESULTS REFLECT QUALITY
OF TCCES EDUCATION
TCCES uses the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests to track the scholastic
progress of all TCCES students in grades 1-7. These computer-based assessments use
questions of increasing difficulty in the areas of reading, mathematics and language
to estimate student achievement, and are administered in the fall and spring of each
school year.
The results help educators gain an understanding of each child’s and each class’s current
academic level or to compare class- or grade-level performance to the 5.1 million
students who took the tests in 2013-14.

Seton students consistently score well above average on both MAP and the ACT
Explore tests (see right). Seton’s MAP and Explore results were well above national
norm averages in all areas.
In 2013-14, twenty students at St. Mary Central High School earned AP Scholar
Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP exams. This honor was
bestowed on 23% of the Class of 2014. Among the 20 juniors and seniors receiving
commendation, one student earned National AP Scholar status, eight were designated
AP Scholars with Distinction, four as AP Scholars with Honor and seven as AP
Scholars. The juniors among the group will have the opportunity to move to a higher
level of recognition as they continue on the AP track in their senior year.

SMC students perform well on the ACT college-readiness test, with the Class of 2014
achieving an average composite score of 24.4, well over national and state averages, and
among the highest in Fox Cities schools, with a high rate of participation.
For the fifth time in four consecutive years, St. Mary Central High School had a
graduating senior achieve the designation of National Merit Scholar Finalist,
meaning that he scored in the top .5% of the nearly 1.4 million students who took
the test in 2012.

IT’S MORE THAN A BUILDING,
IT’S A PARTNERSHIP IN FAITH
The end of 2013 marked the beginning of an exciting
campaign to fund the building of a new, state-of-theart middle school for the school system! Announced in
November and officially kicked off on December 26, the
campaign was off to a solid start with $6.5 million pledged
by five founding benefactors, the endorsement of the Most
Reverend Bishop Ricken and the commitment of support
from the pastors and five parishes of Neenah and Menasha.
The new building, with a 300-student capacity, will be
known as St. Mary Catholic Middle School. It will be
located on the campus of the current St. Mary Central High
School and will cost $11 million to build. With a balance
of $4.5 million left to raise when the campaign kicked off
in December, the initial fundraising focus was centered on
the parishioners within the five Catholic parishes of Neenah
and Menasha. The church communities have committed
to raising $3 million, and the remaining $1.5 million will
be provided by various TCCES groups and constituencies
including Seton and SMC alumni and out-of-parish school
families, as well as local businesses, professionals and
community friends that appreciate the value of a TCCES
Catholic education.
THE BUILDING
To promote academic excellence, the new middle school’s curriculum
will incorporate more collaborative learning and technology into the
school’s strong academic program. The middle school’s approach to
education is to have a team of teachers for each grade level that plans
age-appropriate, cross-curricular units and activities. Currently, there
is not enough space for students to meet in special groups to carry out
these activities. In the new school, there will be ample space and the
flexibility to form collaberative groups at any time, in various ways.
Having spacious, naturally lit rooms with wireless capability, as well as
moveable work surfaces and seating will allow teachers and students to
move fluidly from one situation to another, enabling independent work,
group collaboration or one-on-one conferencing.
Design Features:
• The classrooms are arranged into flexible grade-level communities, “pods”
or “houses,” each containing 3-4 large core classrooms and adjacent
collaborative, independent learning areas for each grade level.
• There are three separate classrooms designed for band/choir, art, and
science that will be shared by all three grade levels.
• The facility will accommodate current and long-term technology trends.
• The science and art classrooms are located to take advantage of the
adjacent Jane’s Woods as an outdoor learning environment.
GROUNDBREAKING
Once the fundraising committee reached 80% of its goal, the Diocese
of Green Bay approved a groundbreaking ceremony that was held on
May 27, 2014. The rainy weather certainly did not dampen the crowd’s
enthusiasm! The celebration was attended by all TCCES K-11 students,
parish members, community leaders, school families and more; and
included presentations by Bishop Ricken and Dick Bergstrom, chairman of
the fundraising effort. The program also featured thoughts shared by four
students representing all who are so excited about the new school. Then,
community and school leaders used special golden shovels to participate in
the ceremonial groundbreaking, just before the new school name, St. Mary
Catholic Middle School, was revealed. The highlight of the event took place
when Bishop Ricken and several lucky students literally broke ground with
five large earthmovers.
Actual work began on the building in June, and construction continues to
progress rapidly. Photos of the construction can be viewed on the system
website at tcces.org.

FAITH FOR THE FUTURE--PARISH SUPPORT
The pastors and more than 80 volunteers stepped forward to help with the
parishes’ fundraising efforts. The pastors and volunteers started right away
with selling discount cards and campaigns of letter writing and personal
contacts. In addition to efforts in their own churches, committee members
from all five parishes worked together last year on two big events —“Celebrate
Seton,” a Mass with Bishop Ricken and Italian dinner in the spring and
plans for a “Connect 5,” a 5K-pledge walk in September 2014 from the old
building to the new one with a celebration carnival. The level of cooperation
and enthusiasm among the parish volunteers has been inspirational. All dollars
raised through these multi-parish efforts are split between the five parishes
and applied to their building fund assessments. The fundraising efforts for
the Neenah and Menasha Catholic parishes have been a great opportunity for
teamwork and community building.
To reflect Catholic traditions, the overall layout of the building is
organized around three metaphors consistently seen in Christian
architecture for 2000 years: body, city and temple. The footprint and
layout of the building represent these metaphors:
• Body is represented by the gymnasium
• City is exemplified through the commons and social
interaction areas
• Temple is signified by the academic wing and chapel
The area that unifies the three, literally and figuratively, is the “light
corridor” or central spine of the building.
USING TECHNOLOGY IN THE
TCCES CLASSROOM: SOFTWARE
In addition to online resources, TCCES is licensed to use a number of excellent
software suites that provide daily support for educators and students in
achieving curriculum goals. A few of the programs used include ones that allow
students to:
• Play their musical instruments along with music onscreen and then receive
immediate feedback on their performance including pitch and rhythm
• Edit their photographs in art, marketing and yearbook classes
• Collect and analyze data and conduct experiments both individually and as
part of a class
• Read a book or material as a class with the same subject matter presented at
differing levels of difficulty depending upon students’ aptitude
• Answer questions about the same material presented at an individual’s own
reading level
• Create and easily collaborate on presentations and posters for group projects
• Record important notes by using speech-to-text software
“There are endless classroom possibilities!”
–SMC Teacher
We enthusiastically thank our clergy and
parishioners for their steadfast support of
Catholic education and this important project!
We offer our gratitude to the Most Reverend
David Ricken, Bishop of the Diocese of Green
Bay, and the leadership of our Neenah and
Menasha parishes for the valuable counsel and
leadership they provide, as well as to the parish
communities for their prayers and support.

CONFUCIUS CLASSROOM
After a lengthy application process, St. Mary Central High School
received the honor of being designated a Confucius Classroom.
This is an international program that promotes the teaching of the
Chinese language and intercultural understanding. Our Confucius
Classroom, administered by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville,
is the only Confucius Classroom in the Fox Cities, and one of a
handful in the State of Wisconsin. The grant includes language
instruction materials and technology.
With the generous in-kind assistance of Miron Construction
Company and the support of Bergstrom Automotive, St. Mary
Central transformed the former distance learning lab to resemble
an ancient Chinese classroom with low tables and pillows for
seating, colorful walls and rich wood accents. A Smart board
enables the instructor to engage students in learning to read and
write Mandarin Chinese with the latest technology. In addition,
an inviting sitting area has been created outside the classroom
and features Chinese-style decorations and seating, as well as
bookshelves with informative books about China and Chinese
cultural interests. A very talented SMC parent completed a huge,
stunning mural of the Great Wall of China, peonies (China’s
national flower) and a poem in Chinese characters.
In November, St. Mary Central celebrated the grand opening of the
Confucius Classroom. The event took place in the Jane Bergstrom
Fine Arts Education Center. This festive celebration included a
Qipao fashion show featuring traditional Chinese clothing and
music, demonstrations by Chinese guests and performances by our
Mandarin Chinese students. The highlight of the evening was an
authentic Qinlin Eye-Opening ceremony with a dancing lion and
the unveiling of the brass plaque announcing SMC as the site of a
Confucius Classroom. A reception featuring Chinese culinary treats
completed the evening.
USING TECHNOLOGY IN THE
TCCES CLASSROOM: WEBSITES
The internet provides a seemingly unending array of websites and online tools that
can be used to enhance students’ educational experiences. TCCES uses a strong filter
that protects students from inappropriate content while allowing access to useful tools.
Websites that are used frequently by TCCES educators offer:
• Content-based quizzes for teachers to use as pre-lesson evaluations and for students
to use for review of material covered
• Lessons and demonstrations prepared by experts on specific topics
• Math problems in specific topics that differentiate the review by giving hints to
those who miss several problems and increasing difficulty for those who answers
questions correctly
• High quality videos that explain difficult topics or concepts, or provide inspiration for a
religion class
• A searchable online Bible
• Opportunities to practice world language vocabulary and comprehension through
song, cartooning, quizzes and role playing
• Databases for exploring career options and comparing colleges
• Demonstrations of a plethora of activities from playing musical instruments and
conducting science experiments to solving difficult math problems
• Blogs sharing information about Catholic identity, liturgical seasons, saints and service
“The site can be accessed on students’ phones, so they can practice
the language anytime, anywhere!”

BASKETBALL PROGRAM IS A SLAM DUNK
In 2009, the TCCES Board of Trustees and
Athletic Committee approved the formation
of the Junior Zephyrs Basketball Club
(JZBC). Designed to give interested students
an opportunity to play basketball outside the
regular school season and to prepare them for
the future, the program has grown from 70
players in grades 5-8 on seven teams in the first year to nearly 160
players in grades 2-8 on 14 teams during 2013-14. A group of 17
TCCES parents, SMC coaches and staff are involved with the club’s
board of directors, and another 35-40 volunteers coach the teams.
Zephyrs Night at an SMC Varsity game where they scrimmaged
during halftime. On other nights, they were the honored guests of
the team, making posters, warming up, and standing with the team
for the pre-game pledge and prayer.
As of the 2014-15 school year, to reflect the system wide-change to
the Zephyrs, the Junior Zephyrs Basketball Club is to be known as
the Zephyrs Basketball Club. It will still provide a great basketball
experience for young athletes!
Teams are organized for boys and girls in grades 2 through
8. Second grade is a formation year, with players developing
fundamentals through skills, drills and team scrimmages. Beginning
with third grade, the teams compete in selected regional basketball
tournaments from November through April, and an effort is
made to be sure that tournaments do not conflict with the school
basketball season.
The tournament program is designed as a feeder program for the
highly successful St. Mary Central High School girls and boys
basketball teams, with members of the SMC basketball coaching
staffs assisting with coach selection, player evaluation and team
practices. All students attending TCCES schools are invited and
encouraged to participate, and students from other schools who
are considering St. Mary Central for high school are also highly
encouraged to join a team.
Throughout the club, program leaders and coaches work to offer
prospective SMC students an opportunity to excel at competitive
basketball by developing individual and team skills, and fostering
positive attitudes and teamwork. In addition to becoming the
foundation of a strong basketball program, the club serves to build
the self-esteem and self-confidence of each participant.
But it’s not all hard work! In addition to the practices and
tournaments, in 2013-14, players enjoyed opportunities such as
playing an intra-squad scrimmage before a Milwaukee Bucks game
and a season finale all-team pizza party. Players also enjoyed Junior
TCCES REALIZES THE BENEFITS OF SCRIP!
In 2013-14, with $4 million in Scrip sales, TCCES met its goal of
recording $200,000 in tuition credits to school families, doubling
the amount credited in the prior fiscal year. Those dollars went
directly to reducing individual families’ own tuition bills. With
Scrip’s updated website, the addition of more local vendors, and
more TCCES families using Scrip, TCCES administrators hope
to see the amount of tuition credits double again, to $400,000, in
2014-15.
TCCES parishes benefit from purchases made through the parish
and by school families that belong to their parish. In 2013-14,
$45,000 was shared with our parish partners. Scrip supports our
TCCES parishes.
TCCES families benefit from purchasing everyday items like gas
and groceries, buying home improvement supplies or enjoying a
night out or a weekend away. All of these activities can all be done
with Scrip, and in 2013-14, $200,000 was applied directly to
reduce the tuition costs of the families who did so. Scrip helps
TCCES families pay their tuition.
TCCES’s operating budget benefits from Scrip. A small
administrative fee is charged for every Scrip transaction, and that
money goes directly to TCCES tuition assistance. After sharing
a portion of this fee with the participating parishes, $50,000 was
made available to help families afford a Catholic education
in 2013-14. Scrip helps TCCES thrive.

ADDRESSING SPECIFIC NEEDS WITH
TCCES ENDOWED FUNDS
One way in which donors choose to support TCCES is by establishing an endowment. Once an endowment account reaches a value of
$10,000, an endowed scholarship or fund is created, and 5% of the total value of the account is withdrawn on an annual basis.
Forty-three endowed accounts benefit our schools in one way or another, most in the form of tuition assistance. TCCES invites interested
donors to contribute to one of the endowed accounts listed below, or to explore setting up a new fund. A new fund of at least $10,000
will begin benefitting the system immediately, but we also welcome the establishment of new accounts that will be added to over time to
eventually become endowed. The endowed funds currently held for TCCES at various institutions and foundations, including The Catholic
Foundation of the Diocese of Green Bay and The Community Foundation for the Fox Valley are:

During the 2014-15 school year, TCCES plans to establish new endowed accounts for two important aspects of a well-rounded Catholic
education: fine arts and athletics. Each of these contributes to the TCCES community in a unique and important way, and all require
funding well beyond the system’s budget in order to provide the best opportunities possible for our students. For information about how to
help in these, or any areas, please contact Michelle Dejno at the TCCES Advancement Office at 920-722-7796 ex 201.
USING TECHNOLOGY IN THE TCCES
CLASSROOM: COMMUNICATION
One of the most powerful uses for technology is communication. Whether as
a way for parents, students and teachers to share information and ideas, or
as a strategy for building important collaborative skills, TCCES makes good
use of technology as a communication tool.
• Many teachers use classroom websites to communicate with their students
about assignments and to provide links, simulations and tutorials.
• Students can save their final assignments and projects in a teacher’s
computer folder and the instructor can evaluate and grade the work.
• Teachers and administrators at SMC communicate with students using
school-supported email.
• Seton students use member-only blogs set up by their classroom teachers
to share ideas with classmates.
• Teachers and students work collaboratively on projects or group
assignments in real time from different locations.
• Teachers and students use video calling to communicate with experts to
interview, chat with or observe experts in a variety of fields.
“The looks on the students’ faces were priceless when they saw each other!” –St. Margaret Mary Teacher
TCCES/SMC ANNUAL FUND DRIVE
Supporters of Catholic education through TCCES recognize that their gifts are essential to the school system. The annual fund for TCCES/
SMC remained strong in 2013-14, with 664 gifts totaling $153,864. About half of the gifts (52%) came from alumni.
Financial support of TCCES enables the system to offer tuition assistance for qualified families; provide professional development training for
teachers; purchase textbooks, lab supplies and religious education materials; maintain and purchase technology equipment and care for our
buildings and grounds. All of these are essential to providing an outstanding Catholic education to TCCES students. Tuition payments and
parish subsidies fund only part of the cost of these important items—the rest must come from fundraisers and the TCCES/SMC Annual Fund.
The difference between the cost to educate a student and what TCCES charges can be seen below. Please help to close this gap.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIVING
INVOLVEMENT
Each and every prayer for students, faculty, staff and administration,
as well as your participation at the schools or in any special event is
a great gift to TCCES.
GIFTS OF CASH
This is the most popular form of investing in TCCES. Every
donation, whether unrestricted or for a specific purpose, is tax
deductible.
ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN
Each year TCCES conducts an annual appeal that benefits the
TCCES Foundation. Unlike campaigns that do so much to provide
enhancements for our students, the annual appeal helps to cover
necessities such as utilities, teacher salaries, textbooks, technology,
buildings and grounds maintenance and scholarship assistance.
MATCHING GIFTS
Many companies have programs that will match individual financial
contributions to TCCES, effectively doubling the contribution.
Several area employers will make a donation based upon the
number of volunteer hours a worker contributes to an organization.
GIFTS OF SECURITIES
Gifts to TCCES in the form of stocks, bonds or mutual fund
shares yield considerable, immediate tax advantages for the donor.
Appreciated securities can be transferred without causing the donor
to realize gain on the appreciation, still yielding a current deduction.
PLANNED GIFTS
Planned gifts are contributions left by a donor through his or
her estate. A statement in the donor’s will or trust can direct the
personal representative to gift to TCCES.
LIFE INSURANCE
By designating TCCES as a sole or shared beneficiary on a life
insurance policy, a donor is able to make a substantial contribution
at a relatively small cost. Premium payments are tax deductible.
BEQUESTS
A bequest to TCCES may reduce the taxation on one’s estate,
making the net cost of the gift less than its face value. This can be
done with a new or existing policy, IRA annuity, employer group
term insurance, or your retirement plan.
TRUSTS AND ANNUITIES
Trusts can be established to allow TCCES to receive a lifetime
income.
MEMORIAL TRIBUTES AND GIFTS
Gifts can be given in memory of a friend or a loved one. Gifts may
also be given in honor of an anniversary, birthday, graduation or
other significant event.
RETIREMENT PLANS
Amounts withdrawn from retirement accounts can be taxable to
you and your heirs. Enjoy little or no tax penalties with an offsetting
charitable deduction.
SMC/TCCES FOUNDATION
There are many (30+) endowed accounts that sustain TCCES
operations, tuition assistance, faculty salaries and training. Gifts to
these endowed funds will help to maintain a quality education for
future generations.
Twin City Catholic Educational System (TCCES) has made
every reasonable effort to ensure that the information contained
in this annual report is accurate. If you notice an error, please
accept our apologies and, if you wish, contact editor Molly
Griffin at [email protected] or 920.722.7796 ext 803.

AN ENRICHING EXPERIENCE
The TCCES Elementary Enrichment Program has its roots in a
series that was begun at St. Margaret Mary Elementary School
around 2001, when the school began to choose a theme each
year (such as space exploration, math, international culture or
reading), and a parent group worked with teachers to organize
related activities for students. In more recent years, Principal
Eleanor Healy noticed more interest in after-school activities, and
the school responded with trying karate and cooking classes. Both
were very popular and spurred requests for additional options.
Parent volunteer Christine Cedergren took on the responsibility of
surveying parents to determine curriculum, recruiting instructors,
setting up schedules and managing registration, and the program
blossomed from there.
Today, students in preschool through fifth grade enjoy classes with
their friends, often right in their own building, that range from
a variety of dance classes including ballet, jazz, lyrical and hip
hop dance, karate and robotics to tennis, art, yoga, photography,
chess, a running club, Spanish and golf. The program offers both
nationally established classes such as Girls on the Run, and STEM
classes including FIRST Lego League, Jr. FIRST Lego League, Club
Invention, VEX Robotics, as well as those developed and taught by
local professionals and hobbyists.
At first, everything was done on paper, but the program has since
moved to online registration. This improvement facilitated opening
the classes to students from all three TCCES Elementary schools
for the first time in spring of 2013. The goal of the after-school
program is to expose kids to activities they may not have a chance
to try, increase STEM opportunities, build community among the
three elementary schools and help families save money. Cedergren
has worked hard to respond to parents’ ideas and requests, and has
conducted surveys to gather feedback which showed that parents
appreciate the variety of opportunities and the fact that they are
available right in their kids’ schools. Parents also shared that this
program simplifies their evening schedules and allows them to have
more time together as a family at night.
At the Enrichment Showcase, which was held at the fine arts center
on April 3, 2014, TCCES elementary students had the chance to
show off what they had learned. On display in the lobby, which
was crowded with proud parents, siblings and grandparents, were
art, photography and STEM projects that students had worked on
throughout the year. On stage, students shared with an enthusiastic
audience their talents in lyrical, hippety-hop and hip hop dance,
karate and Popsingsation (a Glee-style singing group). It was a
highly successful evening that families are looking forward to
enjoying again on April 23, 2015.

USING TECHNOLOGY IN THE
TCCES CLASSROOM: EQUIPMENT
TCCES employs a number of devices that work in association with software to
provide educational tools that enhance every student’s classroom experience.
• Document cameras allow teachers to project lessons, student work or
demonstrations onto a large screen.
• Smart Boards are used for daily grammar practice, review of math problems
and interactive learning.
• Smart response clickers are used in all phases of learning—teaching, review
and assessment to instantly determine a group’s knowledge, keep students
on task with new material and review before a test.
• Stop-motion cameras are used by science teachers to explain concepts
such as constant velocity and uniform acceleration.
• Audio-visual equipment is used by world language teachers to reinforce
language learning.
• Transpiration and respiration monitors, sensors (and other types of
monitoring equipment) are used to gather data in science classes.
• Students use their own smart phones to access quiz programs and
language-practice websites.
“The clickers that go with the Smart Boards are fabulous. We use them in
all grades. They make learning fun for the kids and give teachers an instant
measure of progress.”
