SETTING THE SCENE
Tennessee Tech got off on the wrong foot in OVC play Thursday, suffering a seasonopening upset at SIU Edwardsville. The Golden Eagles will attempt to salvage a split
in their league-opening road trip at UT Martin. The game is the final contest of a
six-game road swing that began on Dec. 17. Tech has won five of its last seven games
and is 3-2 since last playing at home. Golden Eagle players lead the OVC in points,
rebounds and assists -- Kevin Murphy in scoring (18.9 ppg), Jud Dillard in rebounding
(8.6 rpg) and Zac Swansey in assists (5.7 apg). UT Martin is coming off back-to-back
OVC losses to Murray State and Tennessee State and has lost seven of its last eight
games.

FIVE-GAME STREAK
Tennessee Tech has won the last five games
in its series against UT Martin and holds a
32-11 overall edge in the series. Recently,
the series between the two in-state rivals
has been a streaky one. Prior to the Golden
Eagles’ five-game winning streak, which
began in 2009-10, the Skyhawks had taken
four consecutive games in the series. In the
last six games, the Golden Eagles hold a 6-4
record against UTM.
The Cougars were guided by a quartet
of players in their victory, including Kris
Davis, who posted 19 points as he proved
to be a dangerous outside presence going
5-of-6 from three point land. Jerome Jones
notched a team-high 20 points, while bring
down seven rebounds.
ON TO THE SEMIS
NO. 1 x 5
Jud Dillard recorded his fourth doubledouble on the season while Kevin Murphy
put his ninth 20-plus-point performance of
the season in the books to lead the Golden
Eagles to an 83-59 victory over the Skyhawks in the quarterfinal round of the OVC
Tournament on March 3, 2011.
The Golden Eagles opened the floodgates
in the second period of play, starting off
with an 18-5 run over the first seven-anda-half minutes of the game to notch their
largest lead at 25 points with a score of
56-31 with 12:36 left in the game.
Martin was only able to close the lead to 15
after that, as Tech continued to dominate
in the paint, outscoring UTM 26-8 on the
inside in the second half. Murphy netted
14 second-half points for a grand total of
24 on the game to lead the Golden Eagles,
while Dillard put up nine points and nine
rebounds in the second period.

UPSET ALERT
SIU Edwardsville shot 51 percent from the
field to beat Tennessee Tech in the Cougars’
first-ever Ohio Valley Conference game
Thursday night in Edwardsville. TTU fell to
0-1 in the conference as SIUE won 83-68.
Tech managed to trim an 11-point first half
deficit to six with just 5:25 left in regulation
behind some solid shooting from the line
from several Golden Eagles.
Junior Jud Dillard notched a game-high
24 points and finished just one board shy
of his fourth double-double of the season
with nine.
Senior Zach Bailey also made his presence
OPENING TIP
A Tennessee Tech player leads the OVC in
four individual statistical categories -- Kevin
Murphy in scoring (18.9), Jud Dillard in rebounding (8.6) and Zac Swansey in assists
(5.7) and steals (2.6).
THE STREAK ENDS...
Kevin Murphy went without a three-pointer
against SIU Edwardsville, ending his streak
of 18 consecutive games with a made
three-point basket. The streak began last
season against Jacksonville State on Feb. 26
and featured a four three-pointer night for
Murphy against Morehead State in the OVC
Championship game. During the streak,
Murphy went 35-for-83 from long range for
a percentage of .422.
A STEADY LINEUP
After using four different starting lineups
over their first seven games this season,
the Golden Eagles have now used the
same starting five for eight straight games,
consisting of Zac Swansey, Kevin Murphy,
Jud Dillard, Dennis Ogbe and Terrell Barnes.
At least one early variation of Tech’s lineup
has been due to injury -- Barnes has started
every game after missing the first two due
to a foot injury. Only two Golden Eagles
-- Swansey and Dillard -- have started every
game on the season. Eight different players,
including Liam McMorrow, Bassey Inameti
and Zach Bailey, have also earned starts.
ALONE AT THE TOP
A go-to scorer throughout his career, Kevin
Murphy has upped the ante so far in his
senior season. The OVC Preseason Player
of the Year is leading the conference in
scoring, averaging 18.9 points per contest,
and ranks 15th in NCAA Division I. He has
reached double-figures in 12 of 14 games,
and has scored 20-plus points on seven
occasions, most recently scoring 22 points
in a 67-59 win over Bethune-Cookman. He
2011-12 GOLDEN EAGLE BASKETBALL
STRONGER THAN EVER
tied his career-high with 31 points against
Wilberforce on Nov. 27.
on Dec. 3 and played at West Virginia (Big
East) on Dec. 19.
JUD JUMPS TO THE TOP
The Golden Eagles will play 11 games this
season against squads who participated
in the postseason a year ago. That list
includes Miami (NIT), Duquesne (CBI), East
Tennessee State (CIT), Evansville (CBI), West
Virginia (NCAA), Bethune-Cookman (NIT),
Morehead State (NCAA), Murray State (NIT)
and Austin Peay (CBI). The Golden Eagles
will face OVC foes Morehead State and
Murray State twice.
On the heels of an offseason in which he
focused intently on adding strength, Jud
Dillard is seeing his hard work pay off in
the form of some impressive rebounding
numbers this season. Dillard is the OVC’s
leading rebounder, pulling down 8.6
boards per contest, a nearly three-rebound
improvement over his 2010-11 average.
Dillard has posted three double-figure
rebound performances, grabbing 12 at
West Virginia, 15 at High Point and 11 at
Appalachian State.
ZAC ATTACK!
Point guard Zac Swansey is putting up big
numbers on both offense and defense for
the Golden Eagles this season. One of the
most prolific distributors in Tech history,
Swansey is once again at the top of the
OVC in assists after leading the league a
season ago, and he ranks 40th in NCAA
Division I, dishing out an average of 5.7
helpers per game. Swansey has finished
with at least six assists in eight of Tech’s
last nine games and has one double-figure
assist outing -- he distributed 10 against
Kennesaw State on Dec. 22.
Swansey is also one of the nation’s leaders
in steals so far this season, averaging 2.6
thefts per game. He tied a career-high by
capturing six steals against Wilberforce and
also snatched five against Reinhardt. Swansey ranks 16th in steals in NCAA Division I
and leads the OVC in the category.
Swansey is looking to lead the OVC in both
assists and steals in back-to-back seasons.
He would be the first Tech player to lead
the league in both categories since Van
Usher did so for three consecutive seasons
from 1989-92.
MINUTES LEADERS
Three Tennessee Tech players -- Kevin
Murphy, Zac Swansey and Jud Dillard -- are
the top three players in the OVC in minutes
played. Swansey is averaging 34.9 minutes
per game while Murphy and Dillard are
each averaging 34.4. The numbers a bit
inflated due to Tech’s two overtime games
against High Point and Lipscomb.
CHALLENGING SLATE
Tennessee Tech faced three opponents this
season from the leagues known as “highmajor” college basketball conferences. The
Golden Eagles opened at Miami (ACC) on
Nov. 11, traveled to Duquesne (Atlantic 10)
The Golden Eagles themselves are coming
off their first postseason berth since 2002.
Tech earned an invitation to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament in 2011 and played
at Western Michigan, falling 74-66.

DONNING THE RED SHIRT
The Golden Eagles plan to redshirt true
freshmen Ryon Riggins and Lanerryl
Johnson this season. Riggins figures to be
an important piece of Tech’s inside game
in the future while Johnson will likely run
point guard for the Golden Eagles. Riggins
received especially high accolades coming out of high school. He was named the
OVC’s “Incoming Sleeper” this preseason by
ESPN.

STRONGER THAN EVER
Welcome to the Nest
Tennessee Tech signed four incoming players during the 2011 early
period this November. Learn a little about each player below:
Shaqueille Calhoun, 6-3, 180, Model (Rome, Ga.)
Calhoun has earned wide recognition for his ability to score from
three-point range. He was named to ESPN.com’s list of the top
25 three-point shooters nationally in the recruiting class of 2012.
He averaged a double-double as a junior in 2010-11, scoring 25.7
points per game and pulling down 11.3 rebounds while leading
Model to state tournament appearances in 2009 and 2011.
Jay Johnson, 6-3, 180, Woodford County (Versailles, Ky.)
Considered one of the top players in the state of Kentucky, Johnson averaged 20 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots per
game as a junior. A knee injury over the summer required surgery,
but Johnson has since recovered and is playing his senior season.
He led Woodford County to a district championship in 2011. Johnson’s father, Lou, was Tech associate head coach Happy Osborne’s
little league baseball coach in Versailles.
Anthony Morse, 6-8, 210, Dacula (Dacula, Ga.)
A combo forward, Morse comes from the same high school program as current Golden Eagle Matt Marseille. As a junior, he averaged eight points to go with 7.6 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per
game. Also a track and field athlete whose specialty is the high
jump, Morse plays AAU basketball for the Georgia Stars, a club
which has turned out current Tech talents Zac Swansey, Kevin Murphy and Terrell Barnes.
Eric Weisenbach, 7-0, 195, Dublin Coffman (Dublin, Ohio)
Remarkably versatile for a seven-footer, Weisenbach averaged
seven points, five rebounds and 3.5 blocks in 2010-11. He helped
Dublin Coffman to a district championship in 2010 and was named
Honorable Mention all-league in the Ohio Capital Conference. He is
also an Honor/Merit Roll student. He scored a career-high 18 points
in a second-round district tournament victory in 2011.
Tennessee Tech suffered a blow this preseason when junior forward Matt Marseille
suffered a season-ending knee injury,
tearing his ACL. Marseille averaged 3.4
points per contests in his first season as a
Golden Eagle in 2010-11 after transferring
from Centenary. He was expected to see
significant playing time in 2011-12.
DOUBLING UP
Tech has recorded three double-doubles
on the season. Most recently, Kevin Murphy
went for 21 points and 10 rebounds against
Kennesaw State. The other three doubledoubles have come courtesy of Jud Dillard,
who did it against West Virginia, Appalachian State and High Point.
2011-12 Double-Doubles

30-POINT CLUB
It took every bit of Kevin Murphy’s 31
points to lift Tennessee Tech over an upset
bid by Wilberforce on Nov. 27. The senior
guard’s performance tied his career-high
and marked the third 30-point game of his
career. He scored 30-plus twice in 2010-11
against Murray State and in the OVC Championship game against Morehead State.
Murphy also pulled down six rebounds
against Wilberforce.
2011-12 30-point games
- Kevin Murphy (11/27 vs. Wilberforce), 31
points
20-POINT CLUB
Twenty-plus-point games have been
abundant for the Golden Eagles so far in
2011-12 thanks to the performances of
Kevin Murphy and Jud Dillard. Murphy has
seven 20-plus-point games while Dillard
has scored more than 20 in five games so
far. Most recently, Dillard scored 24 points
to lead Tech in a losing effort at SIU Edwardsville. On three occasions this season
Murphy and Dillard have posted 20-plus
point games on the same night. In addition to Bethune-Cookman, they also did it
against Lipscomb and Appalachian State.

INSIDE THE NEST
HONORS FOR MURPH
Kevin Murphy was named OVC Player of
2011-12 GOLDEN EAGLE BASKETBALL
STRONGER THAN EVER
the Week on Dec. 19 for his 23-point, sevenrebound performance in the Golden Eagles’
two-point victory over Evansville. Murphy’s
contested three-pointer with 27 seconds
remaining was the eventual game-winner.
A week earlier, Murphy was named MidMajor Player of the Week by CollegeHoops.
net for his performances in victories over
East Tennessee State on Dec. 7 and Lipscomb on Dec. 10. The web site publishes
its Mid-Major Player of the Week as part of
a review of the previous week of college
basketball action published each Monday.
Murphy enjoyed the best week of his stellar
senior season to-date, scoring 23 points
against ETSU and tossing in 29 against
Lipscomb. He went 10-for-13 from the field
against ETSU and scored 19 of his points
against Lipscomb in the second half to
spark a Tech rally.
NOVEMBER HONORS
Senior guard Kevin Murphy and junior
guard Jud Dillard were among five OVC
players recognized as all-conference
selections for the month of November by
CollegeHoopsNet.com. Tennessee Tech was
the only OVC school to have more than one
honoree. Murphy averaged 19.5 points per
game in November while Dillard averaged
8.7 rebounds per contest.
COACHING DEBUT
Tennessee Tech’s Steve Payne made his
official debut as the Golden Eagles’ head
coach on Nov. 11 at Miami (Fla.)
In March, Payne was promoted from his
post as associate head coach, replacing
Mike Sutton, who he had worked under
at Tech since 2002. Payne was the top assistant on Sutton’s staff for nine years and
found himself in a much more demanding
role in 2005 when Sutton was stricken with
a rare immune disorder known as GuillainBarre syndrome and was unable to coach
the early portion of the season. With Payne
handling the day-to-day operations of the
program, the Golden Eagles raced out to
an 8-2 start. Payne continued to handle a
major portion of the coaching duties for
the remainder of the year, leading Tech to
an 18-11 record and the semifinals of the
OVC Tournament.
SEASONED VETERANS
The Golden Eagles’ five projected starters this season (Zac Swansey, Zach Bailey, Kevin Murphy, Jud Dillard and Liam
McMorrow) have played in a combined 375
Division I college basketball games in their
careers coming into the 2011-12 season,
giving Tech one of the most experienced
lineups around. Swansey has the most
games under his belt (98, split between
TTU and Georgia), while Murphy is close
behind, having played in 95 contests. Bailey
(89), Dillard (61) and McMorrow (32) are
also in the mix.
PRESEASON HONORS
Preseason accolades have come flooding
into Cookeville this fall as Tech returns four
starters and almost 90 percent of its offensive production from a season ago.
The Golden Eagles received eight firstplace votes and were picked to finish
second behind Austin Peay in the OVC
preseason poll, while senior guard Kevin
Murphy was named Preseason Player of
the Year by the conference’s coaches and
sports information directors. Along with
Murphy, senior guard Zac Swansey was a
preseason all-conference selection.
Tech has been picked to win the OVC by
a number of media outlets, including the
Sporting News and CBSSports.com. Murphy has gotten Player of the Year nods from
multiple outlets as well while Swansey was
recognized as preseason player of the year
in the league by USA Today.
NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Aside from racking up OVC honors, Kevin
Murphy has also made a name for himself in national college basketball circles.
Murphy was named one of the top 30
“under-the-radar” players in the nation by
CBSSports.com and also earned a spot on
the All-Mid Major second team as named
by College Sports Madness. The All-Mid
Major teams recognized 20 players nationwide split between first, second, third and
fourth teams.
MOVIN’ ON UP
Kevin Murphy scored his 1,000th point at
Tennessee Tech in a home game against
Murray State last season and now has
1,602 career points. With 21 points against
Kennesaw State on Dec. 22, he moved into
sixth on the all-time scorers list at Tech,
passing Anthony Avery.
Murphy could have some company in the
1,000-point club this season from teammate Jud Dillard, who has 842 points to his
name. Dillard, a junior, has averaged 11.2
points per game in his career.
Recent TTU players to join the 1,000-point
club include Anthony Fisher (2008), Amadi
McKenzie (2008) and Frank Davis (2010).

2011-12 GOLDEN EAGLE BASKETBALL
STRONGER THAN EVER
Terrell Barnes missed the first two games
of the 2011-12 season with a foot injury
he suffered in during the offseason before
returning to the lineup on Nov. 19 against
Appalachian State and grabbing four
rebounds. He was inserted into the starting
lineup at High Point and has started each
game since. Barnes, a returning starter
from 2010-11, has been a steady contributor on the inside for the Golden Eagles
during his two-year career, averaging 4.1
points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR
This year’s Tennessee Tech roster has a
worldly flavor to it, with two Golden Eagles
natives of countries other than the United
States and a third with deep roots elsewhere.
Dennis Ogbe grew up in Munich, Germany,
where he played for a club team called
Franken Hexer and was selected to play
in an all-star game similar to the USA’s
McDonald’s All-American Game.
Liam McMorrow hails from Toronto,
Canada, where he grew up playing hockey
and lacrosse. His basketball career began
at Durham College in Ontario, where he
averaged 8.4 points and 6.5 rebounds in
2007-08.
Though he is from the Atlanta area, Bassey
Inameti has roots in Nigeria. His father,
Ephraim Inameti, was a World Cup soccer
player for the Nigeria Green Eagles.
NEW LEADERSHIP
After Steve Payne was named Tech’s head
coach in March, an offseason shake-up
in the staff saw Payne welcome longtime
friend and national-championship NAIA
coach Happy Osborne as well as former
Western Kentucky standout David Boyden
to campus.
Osborne, the longtime head coach at
Georgetown College, an ultra-successful
NAIA program in Kentucky, will serve as
Payne’s associate head coach. He posted a
career 456-84 record at Georgetown and
led the Tigers to the 1998 NAIA national
championship. Payne coached under
Osborne at Georgetown from 1996-2000,
where the two became close friends.
Boyden comes to Tech from an assistant position at his alma mater, Western
Kentucky, where he was an All-Sun Belt
Conference performer for the Hilltoppers
as a player.
LET’S GO TO VEGAS
Tennessee Tech played in one in-season
tournament this season, taking part in
the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic in
December. The Golden Eagles went 2-1 in
the event and were 2-0 in games played
in Las Vegas. Tech opened its stay in the
tournament by suffering a 19-point loss
to West Virginia in Morgantown, W.V., in
the on-campus round. The Golden Eagles
then flew to Las Vegas and defeated both
Kennesaw State, 81-68, and Bethune-Cookman, 67-59, at Orleans Arena, winning the
upper bracket championship. The rest of
the field included Baylor, Saint Mary’s, Missouri State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
SCHEDULE CHANGES
Unlike most seasons, Tennessee Tech will
not play each of its OVC opponents twice
in 2011-12. With the addition of Southern
Illinois-Edwardsville as an official member
of the league, the conference announced
a 16-game schedule designed to allow
schools to gain more freedom and opportunity to schedule quality non-conference
foes. Under the new format, teams will play
six of the other 10 schools twice (home
and away) and the other four teams just
once during the season. When determining matchups, historical and traditional
rivalries were considered along with the
proximity of teams who would play one
another twice during the year.
In 2011-12, Tennessee Tech will play homeand-away series with SIU Edwardsville,
Tennessee State, Morehead State, Murray State, Jacksonville State and Eastern
Kentucky while facing Tennessee-Martin,
Southeast Missouri, Austin Peay and Eastern Illinois just once.
BACK IN THE GAME
In 2010-11, Tennessee Tech earned its first
postseason berth since 2002-03, receiving
an invitation to play in the CollegeInsider.
com Tournament, where they traveled to
Western Michigan and fell 74-66 in the
first round.
SWAN’S SONG
In addition to lighting up the OVC stat
books in 2010-11, Zac Swansey had the
nation on alert as well. Swansey ranked
seventh in NCAA Division I in assists
per game, dishing out an average of 6.4
per contest. It marked the first time a
Tech player has ranked in the top 10 in a
national statistical category since Lorenzo
Coleman was second in blocked shots
and ninth in rebounding in 1996-97.
Swansey also registered 27th in NCAA
Division I in steals per game with an average of 2.1.
Swansey’s 212 assists were the thirdmost ever recorded in a season by a Tech
player.
HE JUST DIDN’T MISS...
Alfred Jones left Tennessee Tech in
2010-11 as the school’s all-time leader
in career field-goal percentage. Jones
shot 64.0 percent from the floor, besting
Amadi McKenzie’s 60.2 career percentage.
Jones’ 2010-11 season percentage of 64.7
ranked fifth all-time.
With Belmont slated to join the league on
July 1, 2012, the future scheduling format
is to be announced.
IN REVIEW
STRONG FINISH
The Golden Eagles were strong finishers in
2010-11, going on a seven-game winning
streak that began Feb. 12 and didn’t end
until the OVC tournament championship
game on March 5. During that stretch, Tech
improved its record from 13-11 to 20-11,
earning its first 20-win season since 200203 and upsetting regular-season league
champion Murray State in the tournament semifinals. Tech finally fell victim to
Morehead State, which went on to upset
Louisville as a No. 13 seed in the NCAA
Tournament.

If loyalty in
coaching
had a face, it
would be that
of Tennessee
Tech’s Steve
Payne.
For Payne, 42, who served as associate head coach of the Golden
Eagles men’s basketball program for
the past nine years under Mike Sutton,
that loyalty paid off in March, when
he was named Sutton’s successor in
a joint press conference announcing the retirement of the veteran as
well as the promotion of a man who
already knows the Tennessee Tech
program inside and out.
“I want to thank coach Sutton for taking
the chance on a junior college coach from
Texas,” Payne said at his introductory announcement. “I have always been proud to
represent Tennessee Tech and I am even
more so today. When I came here, my goal
was to be a Division I coach. After being here,
that goal changed. I wanted to be the coach
of Tennessee Tech University.”
Payne came to Tech in 2002 as an assistant
coach under Sutton and was the top assistant
on the staff for nine years, rising to the post
of associate head coach. He found himself in
a much more demanding role when Sutton
was stricken in 2005 with the a rare immune
system disorder known as Guillain-Barre
syndrome, a disease which sidelined him for
the early portion of that season.
With Payne handling the day-to-day op-

lege. During his time at Georgetown,
the Tigers compiled a 128-22 record,
won three conference titles in four
years, and won the NAIA national title
in 1997-98. The team finished second
at the NAIA National Tournament in
1999-00, and advanced to the Sweet 16
two other years.
Payne also served as an assistant coach
and recruiting coordinator at Northwestern State (La.) University where he
helped NSU to its best conference finish in a decade. Before NSU, he was an
assistant coach at Union University in
Jackson, Tenn., where he was recruiting
coordinator and helped lead the team
to back-to-back 20-win seasons.
erations of the program, the Golden
Eagles raced out to an 8-2 start with
losses at Dayton and Cincinnati. Payne
continued to handle a major portion of
the coaching duties for the remainder
of the year, helping to lead Tech to an
18-11 record and the semifinals of the
OVC Tournament.
During the 2010-11 season, Payne
headed the Golden Eagles on two
OVC road trips in Sutton’s absence and
guided the team to three wins in four
games.
In his nine years, Payne has helped
Tech post 149 wins and two of the program’s five 20-win seasons, hitting that
mark in 2002-03 and again in 2010-11.
While his title changes, Payne sees the
program going through a seamless
transition.
“I’ve always taken ownership of this
program,” he says. “It’s different suggesting to the head coach what you
think is best for the program, and
being the one with the final say, but I
feel I’m prepared for this. I’ve done this
before.
“We have great players, a great staff,
and great administration, and I’m looking forward to continuing the upward
trend of men’s basketball at Tennessee
Tech.”
Payne said he was greatly influenced
by Sutton during the past nine seasons.
“Spending nine years around coach
Sutton will be a huge benefit,” Payne
said. “He’s a very knowledgeable coach.
We’ve been through a lot and I’m ready
to take the next challenge. I want to
face what’s ahead of us.
“I appreciate and will always owe a
debt of gratitude to Mike Sutton for
bringing me here. The lessons I’ve
learned from him over the last nine
years cannot be measured. He has
taught me so many things, but the
main thing is that a basketball program
should be about relationships first. The
relationships we have with each other,
and with our community, are what
make a basketball program special.
“I couldn’t be more proud to be representing a university community and a
man in coach Sutton who has handled
a very tough situation with such class
and poise.”
Payne is a graduate of Russell County
High School in Russell Springs, Ky.,
and earned his bachelor’s degree from
Union College in Barbourville, Ky., in
1990.
Payne and his wife, Kelli, have three
children — sons Parker (12) and Paxton
(10), and daughter Abigail (7).
Following the 2005-06 season, Payne
was recognized for the role he played
in Tech’s success while Sutton began
his recovery. He was named OVC Coach
of the Year by CollegeInsider.com and
was listed as one of 15 finalists for the
Hugh Durham Award honoring the
mid-major coach of the year. CBSSportsline.com also named him OVC Coach
of the Year.
Payne began his career at Tech after
serving as the head coach at Frank
Phillips Junior College in Borger, Texas.
Prior to taking the reins at Frank Phillips JC, Payne was associate head coach
for four years at Georgetown (Ky.) Col-
