201 N. Church St. • Belleville, IL • 62220 • 618-234-4410
SHIP Coordinator Etta Melton, right, assists client Jesse Arms with Circuit Breaker information.
S.H.I.P. - Senior Health Insurance Program
We got off to a fast start this
year with the Circuit Breaker and
Illinois Cares applications. The
website was open in mid-January
and some people did have their
information so they could apply.
But then with all the bad weather
and office closings, we had a lull.
But we are up to speed again
and on the days we are open, we
process 20 applications.
Our office hours are Monday
through Wednesday, from 8 a.m. to
noon. As long as you file by Oct. 1
of this year, your benefits will roll
over for next year. Information
needed to file will include: your
total income for the year 2010,
which includes Social Security,
SSI, wages, pensions, interest and
any other income; proof of your
real estate taxes or rent (a lease
or canceled check).
This is a fantastic program that
does so much for so many. If
you need help with medication
costs, this is where to look. For a
single person, the income level is
$27,610; for a couple it is $36,635.
You can also qualify if you are
under 65 if you are on disability.
For the past few years we have
had a stable office staff and you
probably know Richard Harrison
and Joan Weigreffe by sight
now. We have all had the same
training and any of us can help
you with your problems. You can
give us a call at 618-234-4410,
ext. 7019 and 7045. If you call us
during our busy season, through
April, we may not answer right
away, but leave your name and
your phone number and we will
call back later.
We do not take appointments
and we thank you for your
patience. We never know how
long it will take to complete
an application but we will take
as much time as necessary to
finish the job.
We see so many of you every year, you have become friends. We look forward to
helping you, so take care and we will see you again!
Alzheimer’s Association
Support Group
and Parkinson’s Disease Support Group
meetings are both held monthly.
For information, call
618-234-4410, ext. 7031 or 7033.
These are cooperative programs sponsored by St.
Elizabeth’s Hospital and the PSOP Wellness Center.
Foster Grandparent
Program
We know you have many
end-of-life choices,
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The
Foster Grandparent Program is taking this time to raise
awareness about child abuse and neglect and to encourage
you and others in our communities to support children and
families.
We Thank Y ou for choosing us.
Here are a few tips to get you started:
1. Praise good parenting when you see it.
2. Call family members and friends. Ask, “How are you
and the children doing?” Listening and sound advice
go a long way.
3. Act out emotions with kids. Ask and have them show
you, “What do you do when you are happy, sad or
frustrated?” Build a discussion based on what they say
and do.
These tips are followed daily by Foster Grandparent
Program volunteers and staff. The way we see it, our
communities are only as strong as the families that
live in them. Do what you can to make a difference.
Call 618-234-4410, ext 7062.
Did you know that PSOP is a
recycling/collection site?
PSOP takes…
• old prescription eyeglasses (given to the Lions Club)
• old cell phones (given to Cell Phones for Soldiers)
• aluminum cans (funds go to Advocacy Program)
Please bring any of these items to PSOP.
Let’s go green together!

RSVP Volunteers Needed
• Your Mission: Help our troops call home! One of our host sites,
VFW Post # 1739, is collecting old cell phones, MP3 players
and iPod’s for the “Cell Phones for Soldiers” program. RSVP
will pass the donated items on to the veterans for processing.
Proceeds from donated cell phones are used to purchase prepaid
calling cards for American troops. This is a great way for the
community and veterans to help current soldiers keep in touch.
For a complete listing of the exciting volunteer
opportunities available, go to www.swic.edu/psop
or call Pat Etling at 618-234-4410, ext. 7012.
• Want to be a part of the number one art show in the country
and see artwork from the finest artists the nation has to offer?
If so, Art on the Square, the premium art event of the year,
is looking for special people to help the weekend of May 13-15.
Volunteers are needed to help in art booths, art tents and the
student art show for both morning and afternoon shifts. Free
parking is available. This is an episodic experience you do not
want to miss. • RSVP is looking for a few volunteers to educate senior groups
about sustainability. If you are willing to speak to mature
adults about “Going Green,” this fun and environmentallyfriendly assignment is for you. Free training is provided.
• Let others know you care by helping at the Collinsville
Historical Museum. Sharing your talents and skills, for only
a few hours each month, will enable you to make a meaningful
contribution to this wonderful site and to the Collinsville
Community. Volunteers are especially needed on Saturdays
from noon to 4 p.m.!
• Lewis and Clark Historical Museum is looking for
volunteers to help in the gift shop. This is an educational and
fun assignment. Learn about the history of Lewis and Clark
while helping guests from all over the country.

Curb-to-curb service is provided for all passengers,
which means the ATS vehicle stops at the curb for
passenger pick-ups and deliveries. The ATS driver is not
responsible for assisting the passenger to and from the
vehicle; however, the ATS driver will assist passengers
upon boarding and alighting. A Personal Care
Attendant may accompany a certified passenger at
no extra charge. Service animals are allowed on ATS
vehicles. ATS drivers will assist passengers in loading
and unloading groceries from the ATS vehicle, but will
not carry items outside of the van.

just to ask a question. For more information about the

Senior
Companions
Facing the Future
A grief support series may begin soon. This six-week
educational support group will include emotional
support and grief education for adults who grieve the
loss of a loved one. The program is free of charge, and
reservations are required.
Become a Senior Companion and give yourself the opportunity
to change people’s lives, including your own. You know how
much you value independence in your life. Now you can help
others stay independent, too. Families in every community
struggle to care for their loved ones. By becoming a companion
to a frail person, you help that person stay in his or her own
home. And you’ll join thousands of others to help control the
rising costs of health care. Whether you’re giving families
much needed time off, running errands, or just being a friend,
you’ll make a difference that strengthens and helps preserve
an individual’s independence. Your kindness can create lifechanging possibilities.
For further information, please contact Jodi Gardner
at 618-234-4410, ext. 7031 for more information and
other grief resources.
(S.T.E.P.) Senior Transit Express Program
Learn how to use the MetroLink and local buses
There are many benefits that are not just for the community
and those you help, but for you, too. Choosing to volunteer can
also be a way to share an interest or learn how to do something
new. Volunteering brings its own rewards and satisfactions
– like learning new life skills, increased social life, improving
your local community and much, much more.
Fridays, April 8 and April 29
Groups travel to various destinations.
A free box lunch is provided at the end of each trip.
Space is limited, so you must have a
reservation to participate.
Call 618-234-4410, ext. 7056
for information and reservations.
If you are interested in becoming a friendly visitor to
homebound seniors in your area, contact the Senior
Companion Program at 618-234-4410, ext. 7036. The
staff will be glad to inform you of the qualifications and
benefits of the Senior Companion Program.

age of 60.

Because of her qualifications as a nurse practitioner, she
is able to prescribe and manage medications that assist
with mood and memory disorders. She often recommends
a combination of medication and counseling for someone
with a mood disorder, such as depression or anxiety. In
that case, she collaborates with her client and the available
counselors to make a plan for medication management
and counseling that hopefully will be the start of a more
peaceful mindset.

Let’s Go Green Together!
Question: Do I have to rinse out my aluminum cans before they can be recycled?
Answer: According to Belleville Recycling, only cans that are completely empty of liquid
can be accepted for recycling. The benefit of rinsing them with a bit of water is that they
don’t attract bugs or make a mess until they are recycled.
Thank you for your green question, Mary!
All PSOP departments will be
notified of your address.
