Order Sons of Italy in America
Grand Lodge of New Jersey As Christmas and the New Year quickly approach again,
I look back with pride at all that WE as an organization have
accomplished in the past year. As you all should be aware, since
the State Convention I have asked Grand Council to consider
several committees and actions which I and the Vice Presidents
believe will build on the foundation that we started and allow
the organization to continue to grow as a whole into the future. I know that some of this may
seem like an aggressive agenda but I must thank all Grand Council members and filial lodge
presidents for the support and cooperation that you have given. It may not seem like a lot,
but when we all work together the things that we can accomplish are infinite.
We realize that some of the filial lodges may be having some difficulties in fundraising
and with recruiting and retaining members which can probably be mainly attributed to the
condition of the economy. I would ask that you all keep in mind that I as well as the Vice
Presidents and all Grand Council officers are here to help. If your lodge is having difficulties
please contact us. We will visit, meet with your board and in general do whatever is
necessary to keep your lodge healthy.
The Purple Aster Charity Ball hosted by the Sons of Italy NJ Foundation will be quickly
approaching after the New Year and we expect that this event may be the largest that we
have ever hosted. It is scheduled for 4/10/10 at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic
City. We will be sending out information right after the New Year so please keep an eye out
for it. We would like to have the best showing EVER by OSIA-NJ members.
As I thank the VP’s I also thank all other Grand Council officers who have accompanied
me on our travels throughout the state or represented me at different meetings and
functions. We have made a commitment to reach all of the lodges in the state and I think
that we have been successful as well as expanding recognition throughout the Italian –
American community. Always remember if there is anything that you need please just call
Rita in the office. Thank you also to Rita – she does a great job keeping up with me and the
organization. She is the driving force behind this paper and the difference that it has made
to the organization through her efforts are remarkable. My job would be much more difficult
without her commitment and loyalty.
Finally, I would like to share something with you that I like to listen to during this season
which reminds us of what the Christmas holiday is all about. For me it puts everything in
perspective.
This is a Christmas ballad by Reba Mc Entire which I think says it all. It’s called “The
Christmas Guest”:
It happened one day near December’s end, two neighbors called on an old friend. And
they found his shop so meager and lean, made gay with thousand bows of green, and Conrad
was sitting with face a-shine, when he suddenly stopped as he stitched a twine.
And he said “Old friends, at dawn today, when the cock was crowing the night away the
Lord appeared in a dream to me and said “I’m coming your guest to be.” So I’ve been busy
with feet astir strewing my shop with branches of fern. The table is spread and the kettle is
shined. And over the rafters the holly is twined. Now I’ll wait for my Lord to appear and listen
closely so I will hear His step as He nears my humble place. And I’ll open the door and look on
His face.
So his friends went home and left Conrad alone for this was the happiest day he had
known, for long since, his family had passed away and Conrad had spent many a sad
Christmas Day. But he knew with the Lord as his Christmas Guest this Christmas would be the
dearest and best.
So he listened with only joy in his heart and with every sound he would rise with a start and
look for the Lord to be at his door. Like the vision he had had a few hours before.
So he ran to the window after hearing a sound but all he could see on the snow covered
ground was a shabby beggar whose shoes were torn and all of his clothes were ragged and
worn. But Conrad was touched and he went to the door and he said, “You know, your feet
must be frozen and sore. I have some shoes in my shop for you and a coat that will keep you
warmer too.” So with grateful heart the man went away but Conrad noticed the time of day
and wondered what made the Lord so late and how much longer he’d have to wait.
When he heard a knock, he ran to the door but it was only a stranger once more. A bent
old lady with a shawl of black with a bundle of kindling piled on her back. She asked for
only a place to rest but that was reserved for Conrad’s Great Guest. But her voice seemed to
plead “Don’t send me away, let me rest for awhile on Christmas Day”, so Conrad brewed her
a steaming cup and told her to sit at the table and sup. But after she left he was filled with
dismay for he saw that the hours were slipping away and the Lord hadn’t come as he said he
would. Then Conrad felt sure he had misunderstood.
When out of the stillness he heard a cry “Please help me and tell me where am I?” So
again he opened his friendly door and stood disappointed as twice before. It was only a child
who’d wandered away and was lost from her family on Christmas Day. Again Conrad’s heart
was heavy and sad but he knew he should make the little girl glad. So he called her in and
he wiped her tears and quieted all her childish fears. Then he led her back to her home once
more but as he entered his own darkened door he knew the Lord was not coming today. For
the hours of Christmas had passed away.
So he went to his room and knelt down to pray and he said “Dear Lord, why did you
delay?
What kept you from coming to call on me? For I wanted so much your face to see.”
When soft in the silence a voice he heard. “Lift up your head for I kept my word. Three
times my shadow crossed your floor and three times I came to your lonely door.
I was the beggar with bruised, cold feet and I was the woman you gave something to eat. I
was the child on the homeless street. Three times I knocked, and three times I came in. And
each time I found the warmth of a friend.
Of all the gifts, love is the best.
And I was honored to be your Christmas Guest.
Finally, on behalf of the entire Grand Council, I would like to wish each one of you and
your families every blessing of this Christmas season. May you all experience a very Merry
Christmas and a very healthy and prosperous New Year!!

Chaplain’s Message- Reverend Joseph Capella
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Greetings and Blessings to you and your families and everyone connected with the OSIA. Well, it’s that time of
year again…Buon Natale! As the years go by and families change with newer generations becoming the youngest or the
newest to celebrate Christmas, we may look at how changes in our society have affected our own families. The Italian
culture has such a rich treasure of Christmas traditions and customs from which to draw. In the midst of ongoing change,
we may have a desire to look back at these traditions and customs as a way to pass on our heritage to this newest
generation of Italian Americans. Depending on our own family’s ancestry, we may have differing customs and traditions
that originated in the different regions of Italy. However, as I recall the rich diversity of these regional customs, I am also
reminded of one that is universal to all of us of Italian heritage that is so important during this Christmas season; la famiglia.
During the first years of seminary, we were not allowed to go home for Christmas. To many of us who were novices this rule seemed harsh
and unfair especially since the men in the “upper school” were permitted to leave on Christmas Day for a week of vacation away from the seminary.
Even though we too did not have classes during this time, it seemed so odd that we were not with our families at such a time. For many of us,
including me, this was the first time in our lives that we were not with our families at Christmas. We were allowed to call home on Christmas Day
but I had just called home the week before so the rector of the seminary wasn’t so sure if I should be permitted to call again. In fact, he noted
that I asked to call home a lot as did another classmate of mine. He mentioned that both of us were Italian and in his experience, all of the Italian
seminarians with whom he had contact throughout the years called home more than any other group. I suppose that I should have questioned
what he meant by such a comment but I simply responded that calling home once every few weeks, as we were allowed to do at the time, was even
less than what I thought it should be. He asked what I thought might be an acceptable frequency. I said that at least once a week would be great.
To make a long story short, I called home on Christmas Eve just as the family was passing around the stuffed calamari.
I would ask of all of our OSIA families that more than anything else during this season, please be sure to share that most precious tradition of
our Italian heritage, the celebration of family. Perhaps many of our families are unable to be together for Christmas this year but where and how we
can, we should. Beyond the gifts, the holiday obligations, the long “to do” lists that descend upon us, let us be sure not to forget the “to be” list. We
are called to be family, a holy family after the first Holy Family that welcomed in our Savior whose birth we celebrate and in whose name we have
been saved. Let us be the universal tradition that was given to us, the tradition of la famiglia. Whether we are a family in need of forgiveness, a
family in need of reuniting, a family in need of reconciliation we are first a family called to be holy. Our ancestors who left family and homeland had
to rebuild this most precious tradition among those of us here on this side of the ocean, let’s not allow it to become something Christmases past,
but always cherish its value among our Italian heritage. God’s blessings for a blessed Christmas season and a wonderful New Year. I will end here
because I haven’t called my mom yet today and it’s getting late. Ciao and once again,Buon Natale.
Historian’s Corner - Sal Gambino
In history there are many great words that have been spoken or written that have inspired others and that have made those who
spoke them famous throughout history.
We may even have some that have instilled fear into us .Here are Some of the ones most of us will recognize.
Give me liberty or give me death. I have but one life to give to my country. Ask what you can do for your country. Don’t give up
the ship. Malice towards none charity for all. These are the times that try mens souls. We the People in order to form a more
perfect union. There are many more I am sure. But I can think of two more that are equally as famous but that have not exactly inspired us but rather
may have created fear amongst us.
I wonder how many of us could go on one of those quiz programs and win the million if you were asked what those two words are? I would have no
problem. INCOME TAX !!
In 1958 or so, one of my fellow CPA ‘s named Dana Andrews from West Virginia who was Commissioner of Internal Revenue said that the income tax laws
had done more to destroy the morals of this country than any single other thing. I think he was right. Listen to some of the talk shows, income taxes· are
at the bottom of it all.
That law has changed just about every year since 1939 and because Congress wants to create social programs, they find that they can do it thru
the Internal Revenue Code which then adds more and more pages to it and more difficult to keep up with. Only some of us professionals who are,
accountants or tax lawyers can hope to understand any of it or keep up with it. Many want to change it to something else.
People are always asking me, how far back can they go on you? To 1913 when they passed the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I actually
worked on a case that went back to 1913 and even a few years before it to get some records needed. That is probably pretty rare and maybe I am one of
the few that ever did anything like that so Income tax has made me part of history that no one ever knew about.
But for the many who want to change to something else, you would be better served to read up on every other way of getting taxes out of us before you
start talking about it I can refer you to some material on it.
There was a time when it was very simple and only affected a few wealthier folks. I remember when the rates went up to 90 % then down to 70, 50 and
now 35. I think we all favor lower taxes or none if that could be. They say if we keep them lower, that money will flow into the economy and make things
better for capitalism and the free market. But I don’t think that they should be kept artificially lower by taking billions every year from the social security
funds to pay government bills which then made many at the top become much wealthier than they should have been. When they were 90%, I don’t
recall people screaming about it or saying they would not hire anyone, because the taxes were so high. I think history has shown that somehow we grew
richer even with high rates up to the late 80’s. I am not an economics expert and so I will leave all of this to those who are better equipped to debate that
I don’t mind paying but I like the money to go to what it was intended for.
So now we have everyone at someone else’s throats. All I hear are hate speeches which have their roots in taxes both federal, state and local taxes. Like,
I don’t have any kids in school, why should I pay school taxes? I paid my taxes and did the right thing why should that guy get away with paying nothing
or less than me .The teachers get to pensions (which save taxes) how dare they! All those legislators are crooks ! Vote them all out next time. I paid
them to serve me! How come they got a raise and I did not get in my social security ck? Why isn’t the Governor reducing property taxes like he said he
would? The private sector should create the jobs, why then are we blaming the fed government for why there are no jobs? Especially when we say keep
the government out of our business. Well for those who want the government to help create them, there needs to be taxes to pay for it. So you see how
taxes are at the root of all the evil? Oh, I forgot, I am a senior and I should not pay any taxes, I paid them all my life now I should be getting a free ride!
I still work and I probably pay more taxes than just about every client l represent and I am not rich. I wish I was because I would be acting more like
Christians are supposed to be doing, like doing more to help the poor and those less fortunate. Imagine if we had almost no taxes to pay. Can you picture
yourself getting up to shovel the snow in the street? How about if someone robbed your house, would you hire your own policeman to track down the
guy? How about full time teachers to teach your 4 kids? Fix the pot holes assuming there were paved streets and not cow paths and a horse and buggy to
use to ride. I could see how nice it would be to save $30,000 a years in taxes and go next door to my nice neighbor and say, hey Irving, I am a little short
this year, can you give me $30,000 to make me balance my budget? I think the many of us who are complaining about taxes and how the government
should keep their nose out of our business are some have gotten plenty because of government and who themselves may not have paid in as much as
they have taken out. We need each other, don’t you think? How about We the People?

Grand Lodge News
OSIA National President visits October Grand Council Meeting
for a Special Presentation
The Grand Lodge of NJ was extremely privileged to
welcome a special visitor to the October Grand Council
meeting.
Newly elected OSIA National President Joseph
DiTrapani of New York attended the October 26 Grand
Council meeting at Milano Modo by Lamberti Restaurant
in Mt. Holly, NJ at the request of State President Tom
Bergbauer for two reasons.
First, President DiTrapani gave everyone in
attendance a “State of the Order” presentation
basically outlining his plans for the next two years of his
administration to move the Order forward. Just coming
off of a very electrifying National Convention this past
August in San Diego, California, he outlined how he
has already taken steps to better streamline the operations of the organization while formulating ways of
improving membership and providing services to the membership. President DiTrapani also commented
on the improved visibility and involvement of the Grand Lodge of NJ with National OSIA exemplified by the recent elections and appointments to National
positions at the recent National Convention. He expressed his appreciation to the Grand Lodge administration for their support of National OSIA and also his
agenda.
President DiTrapani then presented a special honor to long time National Deputy to the Grand Lodge of NJ, Joseph E. Fay of New York. Joe Fay has held
this position for 20 years always representing the sitting National President with class and dignity. Since this position no longer exists and because of Joe’s
dedication to the Grand Lodge of NJ, President DiTrapani named Joe Fay as National Deputy Emeritus to the Grand Lodge of NJ. Mr. Fay was presented with
a gift from the National President as well as a plaque from the Grand Lodge. The inscription on the plaques reads: “Presented to Joseph E. Fay - 26 October
2009 - In Recognition of your Being Named National Deputy Emeritus to the Grand Lodge of New Jersey by OSIA – Supreme Joseph DiTrapani – National
President - The officers and members of OSIA – NJ sincerely appreciate your advice, friendship, loyalty, fraternity, and generosity over the last 20 years. You
are a perfect example of what an OSIA member should be and we admire you for that. Thomas A. Bergbauer, Jr., P.E. – OSIA NJ State President.” Mr. Fay
expressed his sincere surprise and appreciation of this honor and commented that he will continue to represent the National President and support the
Grand Lodge of NJ as he has done in the past.
Finally, President DiTrapani presented a National Chaplain regalia to State President Tom Bergbauer which will in turn be presented to State Chaplain and
Past National Chaplain Fr. Joe Cappella in recognition of his service to OSIA National as Chaplain for the past four years. Fr. Cappella had passed his regalia
on to the new National Chaplain Fr. Adam Forno. It is customary that the Chaplain would keep his regalia however Fr. Cappella passed his on since it had
belonged to long time Past National Chaplain Fr. Donald Licata who passed away after a long bout with cancer. Fr. Cappella was Fr. Licata’s successor and in
his usual humble way felt that this regalia from here on should be retained by the sitting National Chaplain. The regalia was recently presented to Fr. Cappella
at the State Executive Board Christmas party on 12/13/09 by State President Tom Bergbauer and Past National President Vincent Sarno.

HERALD - ORDER SONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA - December 2009
IN MY OPINION
By Sal Gambino
Lately I have been hearing a lot about some of our members
asking” what has the Sons of Italy done for me.” I am perplexed
because I want to know just what is it that you want the order to do
for you.
When I joined any organization, I never asked what are they
going to do for me but rather, what was it that I could do for the
organization, like how could I help it achieve its mission, its goals.
To do that I knew that I would have to sacrifice my time and some
of my money and if I could not do that, then I should not join it. All
of these clubs and organizations are formed to perform a mission
which is usually to serve mankind in some way that will benefit
an individual or society as a whole, in other words, to make a
difference which we are all called upon to do.
Our order helps to protect our good name thru its Commission on
Social Justice, preserve our heritage and customs ,bring Italian
language back into the classrooms, bring us together for social
life, perform acts of charity for local and national causes and to
award educational scholarships to Italian American children, one
of whom could have been or might be one of your own children,
grandchildren, nieces or nephews. We present speakers on
various topics of interest, trips to an opera or other interesting
places like Ellis Island, Little Italy etc.
Oh I forgot we have dinner meetings where we get to meet each
other and yes the food is not always up to our individual taste
or liking. Guess what, if any of you would have known me 30
years ago, you would not have wanted to go to dinner with me
because my gripes would have made you lose your appetite or
ever wanting to be with me. But I have changed a little and I don’t
care about many things that I used to because they are not so
important to me now. So what is it that the Sons of Italy can do for
me? Nothing! But what is it that I can do for it? Plenty I am just too
old now to do some of what I could have done before but there
are plenty of you and much younger who can get off your butts
and show them how we are like our great ancestors who gave so
much to our civilization. I think JFK had it right, ask not what your
country can do for you but what can you do for your country. So let
us stop being so negative, think positive. We are 26 million strong.
Imagine if we could get $1.00 from each of us to do something
good with. Better still, how about $10.00 or $100 or for some of us
$1,000 and we got a few millionaires around too. We should be
the leaders and not the gripers or the naysayers. Lord, when were
you hungry and I gave you to eat? Remember that one?
Maybe when we go to confession we will not be so worried about
confessing to the usual sins, try telling Father about the Sin of
Failure. That is my new one. “I hope that I won’t have to deal with
that one. “
WHO READS THE HERALD ?
By Sal Gambino
Since I have been writing the article the HISTORIAN, I have been
wondering how many people read the Herald and who read all
the paper like I do. I love reading newspapers and probably read
almost an entire one each nite. I think I could do real good on
one of those quiz programs if they would just ask about current
events. I watch some of those shows and I know the answers to
most of the current events questions and most of the contestants
don’t know much about any of them and lose out on making more
money. No I am not smarter than you.
I thought, isn’t it a waste of time and money to print this paper
that we get for being members if no one or few read any of it.
Sometime I ask members if they read the paper. Oh, yes, I get
it, but I can tell they got it but probably did not read any of it and
just laid it down in the pile somewhere. With members asking
what does the Grand Lodge do for me, they send you a paper!
Maybe that is not good enough for some of us. Or maybe we
don’t care about being proud to be who we are. I know some of
our members who are not even Italians who are doing most of the
work on some of our affairs. We should be ashamed of ourselves.
We should be bragging about everything we do and are. Don’t let
our non Italian Americans do all the work.
Some of our lodges want to quit. It costs too much they say.
Everything worth doing costs too much. With risk comes rewards.
If you don’t like to read a paper or this one, tell them to take you
off the list and we can save some money. I thought about how I
could find out how many do read it. I am including a little coupon
for you to fill out and bring back to your lodge meeting. It just
gives your name and that you read at least some of the paper,
all of it, etc. If you do that, I will give the NJ Foundation 25cents
for every member (you must be a full member) and we will give
a scholarship to some young person. If I am right, it will come
to $1,000, just enough for one scholarship. We have a great
saying, put your money where your mouth is! Let us see how true
that is. We have 3500 members, let’s see what happens.

2009 Year-End Tax Planning Checklist: Planning strategies to discuss with your Financial Advisor and tax professional before year end.
By Morgan Stanley Smith Barney
GENERAL TAX ISSUES
o Find out if you carried over any losses from the sale of investments last year. Use this information to determine if you want to use these losses to offset
any investment gains from 2009.
o When selling securities, ask your Financial Advisor how to comply with wash sale rules that govern the purchase and sale of similar investments within a
30-day period.
o Have your tax advisor estimate your adjusted gross income and tax rate and determine now if you have any Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) liability for
2009. If so, you may consider deferring taxable income to 2010 or accelerating or deferring deductions in 2009 to minimize AMT.
o Tell your tax advisor if you purchased any big-ticket items this year or are intending to by year-end. You may qualify for valuable tax credits or deductions
if you bought a car, made energy-saving home improvements, purchased a first home, or paid for a college education.
RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS
o Fully fund your IRA and company retirement accounts as soon as possible. You should consult your tax advisor to determine the deadline for contributing
to your company retirement plan and you have until April 15, 2010 to fund your IRA for 2009.
o Explore the benefits of a Roth IRA. Tax law changes in 2010 will enable all investors to convert to a Roth IRA, which not only provides tax-deferred growth,
but also tax-free income in retirement.1 Your Financial Advisor can provide a complimentary analysis and provide a copy of our special report, The Roth
Conversion Opportunity.
o If you are age 701/2 or older and have a Traditional, SEP or SIMPLE IRA, you don’t have to take Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) for 2009
including the initial RMD which is due April 1, 2010. Be sure to consider how skipping a distribution this year may impact your 2010 distribution.
o If you own a business which has a calendar tax year, you have until December 31, 2009 to adopt a qualified plan in order to deduct contributions for
2009. If you miss this deadline, a SEP plan can be established and funded by the due date for filing the plan sponsor’s 2009 tax return (with extensions) which, if you are a sole proprietor, could be as late as October 15, 2010.
GIFTING PLANS
o If you are age 701/2 or older and considering a charitable gift, look to your IRA: you can make a tax-free donation of up to $100,000 from your traditional
or Roth IRA to a qualified charity.2 This opportunity expires at the end of the year, so act now so the transfer can be completed before year-end.
o If you plan to gift shares of stock to charity, you must act by year end. By gifting appreciated stock, you can qualify for a potential income tax deduction,
or by selling stock that has lost value and donating the proceeds, you can realize a loss to offset other gains.
o Complete any gift transfers to individuals by year-end. Not only will this make you feel good, but you will help reduce the value of your estate and future
estate taxes. You can transfer up to $13,000 per recipient in 2009 without incurring any federal gift tax. Spouses together may gift up to $26,000 per
recipient.
o Talk with your Financial Advisor about how gifting through a 529 Plan can help reduce income or estate taxes. By making an accelerated gift through a
529 Plan, you can gift up to $65k ($130k for couples) per beneficiary.3
OTHER ISSUES
o If you are concerned about owing taxes on your 2009 income, your Financial Advisor can help you put a borrowing plan in place—one that
helps you unlock value in the assets you own, without liquidating those assets or using cash.
o Use any balance in your employer’s Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for qualified medical expenses by year-end 2009. When estimating your
contributions for next year, consider the increasing costs of uncovered medical expenses and changes in your ompany’s medical insurance
plan.
o Ask your Financial Advisor for help rebalancing your portfolio to remain in line with your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance. Discuss any
new opportunities
for investing that might be appropriate for you.

Rebalancing does not protect against a loss in declining financial markets. There may be a potential tax implication with a rebalancing strategy. Please consult your tax advisor
before implementing such a strategy.
Tax laws are complex and subject to change. This information is based on current federal tax laws in effect at the time this was written. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC, its

for the purpose of avoiding tax penalties that may be imposed on the taxpayer. Individuals are urged to consult their tax or legal advisors before establishing a retirement plan
and to understand the tax, ERISA and related consequences of any investments made under such plan.

1
Distributions of earnings are tax-free if made at least five years after the year of the taxpayer’s first Roth IRA contribution and after age 591/2 or due to death, disability or for a first-time
home purchase. Withdrawals of contributions are not taxed
2
Please note that, because Roth IRA distributions are generally tax-free, you will realize less of a benefit
than if you make the charitable contribution from your Traditional IRA.
3
Before investing, clients should consider whether tax or other benefits are only available for investments in their home state 529 college savings plan. No further annual exclusion gifts
and/or
generation-skipping transfers to the same beneficiary may be made over the same five-year

MTV’S JERSEY SHORE
By now I’m sure many of you have heard about the degrading and
disgusting show called “Jersey Shore” that began airing on MTV Thursday,
December 3rd. The show has angered not only Italian-Americans but also the
residents of New Jersey as a whole. The cast is a group of Italian-Americans from
New York living at the Jersey Shore last summer, Seaside Heights to be precise
- they are referred to as GUIDOS, which is considered by most to be a racist
term. The way the show portrays Italian Americans is a disgrace. MTV’s targeted
audience is our younger generation, and their impressions can last a lifetime.
Along with me and many of our CSJ Lodge Representatives and OSIA
members, our National CSJ President, Santina Haemmerle, has sent a strongly
worded letter to MTV condemning the program and demanding it be removed
from their show lineup. However, MTV needs to hear from ALL of us, each in our
own words, about how angry we are about this.
PLEASE take the time to make a call, write a letter or send an e-mail to
MTV **today** protesting this
insult to our ethnicity. Below are the e-mail addresses, the mailing address, and
the phone number, if you are so inclined to verbally address the issue. I’ve also included a link to the show’s website so you can take a look at the
promos.
Working together we can get this garbage off the air. There is a tremendous anger from young Italian Americans and Jerseyites in general,
who are furious at the way they are being portrayed, and we must do everything we can to stop it now. Our collective complaints have already
prompted Dominos Pizza to withdraw their advertising from the show – let’s keep up the push to get this show cancelled. Some of the other major
sponsors include T-Mobile, The Gap, Target, Victoria’s Secret and Neutrogena. Let them hear from you!

Italian-American Governor-Elect Chris Christie
New Jersey Governor Elect Chris Christie is a proud Italian American,
and only the second Italian American to be elected Governor of our
great State. Last summer Brian Donohue of
The Star-Ledger posted
a story entitled Chris
Christie, The Godfather
and what not to say to
an Italian from Jersey
detailing a confrontation
between then gubernatorial candidate Christie
and Rep. Steve Cohen
(D-Tennessee) at a
Congressional hearing in
Washington DC. When
Rep. Cohen used a line from The Godfather, Christie immediately and
angrily responded that Cohen’s remark was “ethnically insensitive to an
Italian-American”. Rep. Cohen’s response? He didn’t know that Christie
was Italian. BRAVO to Chris Christie!!
If you want to read the entire article, see the video of the hearing, as well as the overwhelmingly positive response to the incident
when Donohue interviewed several Jersey Italian-Americans about it,

LA BELLA LINGUA
Recently the members of the Board
of Trustees of the New Jersey Grand
Lodge were invited to attend a dinner
hosted by the Amici della Lingua Italiana.
One of the speakers was Dianne
Hales, who is the author of La Bella
Lingua: My Love Affair with Italian, the
World’s Most Enchanting Language, a
simply delightful book. At a book-signing
following the dinner, I met Ms. Hales
and purchased her book, which I give
two-thumbs-up. I’d give more if I could!
From her website:
“Centuries before there was an Italy,
there was Italian. Its roots date back thousands of years to the volgare, the street Latin of ancient Rome. Italian’s storia—a word that
translates both as “history” and “story”—is a rich, juicy, dramatic saga
virtually unknown outside of Italy. La Bella Lingua tells the adventurous tale of how Italian became Italian and follows its path through the
realms of history, art, literature, manners, music, cooking, cinema and,
of course, amore.
You don’t need to know any Italian to enjoy La Bella Lingua. If
you love Italy, you’ll love learning about its language. If you come from
an Italian family, you’ll discover more about your heritage. If you’re
studying Italian, you’ll find a new perspective that takes you beyond
vocabulary and grammar. If you’re traveling to Italy, you’ll appreciate more about the people you meet and the places you visit. And if
you’re an armchair adventurer—well, buckle your seat belt!”

"MID-AUGUST LUNCH"
TO OPEN AT FILM FORUM IN NEW YORK ON
MARCH 17th FOLLOWED BY NATIONAL RELEASE
New York, NY, November 2, 2009 — Zeitgeist Films has announced a new film, MID-AUGUST
LUNCH (Pranzo di Ferragosto). A hit with audiences at the New Directors/New Films series at
MoMA and winner of the Venice Film Festival prize for Best First Italian Film, MID-AUGUST
LUNCH will open at New York's Film Forum on March 17th, and will roll out nationally to over
100 cities in a platform release. An ode to the ancient food culture of Italy and the magical
bonding power of a shared meal, MID-AUGUST LUNCH is a sprightly comedy about a charismatic bon vivant who relinquishes his independence to care for his beloved aging mother.
Quintessential "Romano" Gianni Di Gregorio stars in his directorial debut drawing upon
events from his own life to craft an utterly charming tale of good food, feisty ladies and unlikely friendships during a very Roman holiday. Broke,
and armed with only a glass of wine and a fatalistic sense of humor, middle-aged Gianni resides with his 93-year-old mother, a fallen aristocrat, in
their crumbling apartment. The condo debts are mounting, but if Gianni looks after the building manager's mother during Ferragosto (Italy's biggest summer holiday, and the Feast of the Assumption), all will be forgiven. Then the building manager also shows up with an auntie, and the family
doctor appears with his mother in tow. Can Gianni jump to keep four such lively Grand Dames well-fed and happy in these tight quarters?
Winner of numerous prizes on the international film festival circuit including the Satyajit Ray Award at the London Film Festival, plus the
Golden Snail at the Academy of Food and Film in Bologna, MID-AUGUST LUNCH is both a warmly vibrant family drama and a delicately balanced
comedy of manners.
You can view the trailer online at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1277728/
ITALIAN HEROES SHRUGGED
Why aren’t true Italian heroes mentioned or celebrated as much as the Hollywood’s stereotypical imagery of our people? To me, Italians and
their American descendants deserve to be shown in a more favorable light—one that makes all people proud. Instead, we are consistently
exposed to the distorted Hollywood version that seems to almost always portray Italian culture as a celebrated criminal element. What
about Columbus or Fermi or Verrazano or Serpico or Scalia or hundreds of others that have signified ‘Italian Pride’ over the years? As I proudly hung the newspaper clippings of Italian mobsters on my bedroom wall in Belleville, N.J. when I was 12 or 13 (just because they
had Italian sounding names like mine and were further made ‘cool’ in my eyes with their accompanying nicknames), my Father strolled into
my room, took a look around and on his way out he pointed to the pictures on the wall and casually said to me, “…and they’ll take your last
dime, too.”
Short…to the point...my Dad -- and I never forgot it.
Goodfellas is purported to be the unequivocal benchmark movie for ‘how it really is’ to live in that part of the underworld. To me the real
“Goodfellas” are Da Vinci, Galileo, Michelangelo and the like who were instrumental in teaching the WORLD how to live. Do you remember about 6 or 7 years ago when there were two TV shows on the air and both actually depicted a positive side of ItalianAmerican life and pride? First Monday was a drama about the US Supreme Court and featured a level-headed Associate Justice who
happened to be a dedicated Italian-American family man. Another show was That’s Life which featured a young Italian-American woman
in her 30’s who strove to better herself by going ‘back to college’ and helping out in the family restaurant. Both shows however were short
lived. My guess is that the network ‘powers that be’ determined that the respectable Italian family theme isn’t anywhere as profitable a
draw as showing Italian mobsters battling it out on the screen. That’s a shame. Where did all the positive role models go for our people?
Although we have to accept the fact that we and our descendants will forever be linked as a nationality made famous in part by the Mafia
and organized crime, Hollywood is the cancer that just keeps on spreading it around. And while positive Italian-American role models
apparently aren’t even on their radar scope, Hollywood just seems to perpetuate this gangster image year in and year out. Even cartoon
movies aren’t safe, as Shark Tale has shown us.
I believe that some people push the envelope to where they believe that it is ‘ok’ to offend another culture without receiving punishment
for doing so. Italian-Americans are Hollywood’s prime target for what I call “racially offensive permissiveness” -- complete with a big target
painted on the heads of all upstanding Italians, courtesy of the mindless Holywood goons pushing that envelope by continuing to play mafia
make-believe.
If as Americans of Italian descent we don’t speak up in defense against this sort of thing, I’m afraid that we will deserve every barb and
insult that comes our way. So, keep fighting the good fight in defense of who you are -- who WE are. John William Del Russo, Sr.
President, OSIA Roma Lodge #254
Virgina Beach, Virgina
Always keep our upstanding Italian heritage alive and never let it go by the wayside.

Description: Valanzoia Dec 10, 09
BC901
Washington, D.C. - November 2, 2009 A delegation of national leaders from the Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) joined Chief Justice John G.
Roberts and Associate Justices Antonin Scalia and Samuel A. Alito at a tribute to the Italian prosecutor, Giovanni Falcone, who was murdered by a
Sicilian crime syndicate in 1992.
The seminar, entitled The Impact of Italian Judge Giovanni Falcone on American Society, was held at the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C.,
October 29. It was organized and coordinated under the auspices of the Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and its Attaché for Justice Affairs
Judge Giannicola Sinisi, in collaboration with U.S. Court of Appeals Judge for the Federal Circuit Arthur J. Gajarsa.
"This collaborative program is intended to launch a new and broader collaboration between the federal judiciaries of Italy and the U.S.," says Judge
Gajarsa.
Representing OSIA, the oldest and largest national organization in the U.S. for people of Italian heritage, were National President Joseph Di Trapani,
National Financial Secretary and former DEA/Attaché to the U.S. Embassy in Rome Frank J. Panessa, and National Executive Director Philip R. Piccigallo.
Participants in the seminar included Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano; former FBI Director Judge William Sessions; Italy's Ambassador to the U.S. Giulio Terzi; and numerous high ranking dignitaries from the Italian and U.S. governments and the FBI.
Other speakers included Deputy Attorney General David Ogden, FBI Deputy Director John S. Pistole, and Italy's Undersecretary of the State Ministry
of Foreign Affairs Vincenzo Scotti and former Minister of Justice Claudio Martelli.
Falcone, a long-time foe of international criminal organizations who often collaborated with the FBI, died near Palermo May 23, 1992, with his wife
in a car bombing perpetrated by La Cosa Nostra, a local crime syndicate. His investigations and the reaction to his death by law enforcement agencies as well as by the general public profoundly weakened Sicily's criminal organizations. The FBI assisted in investigating and prosecuting Falcone's
assassins.
"Judge Falcone's investigative techniques set an example for a generation of prosecutors and judges," says OSIA's Di Trapani. "His life and legacy
generated universal veneration, enhanced international cooperation and major advancements along the road to defeating organized crime."
