The 73rd Annual Sturgis Motorcycle rally is August 5 – 11, Elkhorn Valley’s big anniversary bash at Two Rivers Park August 17 & 18, and H.O.G.’s 30th and Harley Davidson’s 110th Anniversary coming up August 29-31. With all this AND Elkhorn’s event schedule for the next couple of months, you should be able to put a lot of miles on those Harley’s and have a great time. Last month the Dillon Brother’s dealership hosted our first ever HD (hundred-dollar) poker run to help fund our chapter’s activities. Thanks to some mighty fine planning by Dan Hedberg and the dealership AND the willingness of our officers and members to volunteer their time, the event was a resounding success. At the awards ceremony, we were able to give away eight crisp $100 bills to the lucky winners and the chapter netted $740 which will go into our general fund to support great events for our chapter members. Speaking of great events, if you didn’t make the chapter meeting/ride last month you really missed out! Not only did we have a great ride to Ashland’s Cheri O’s, the chapter gave back to the membership by buying ice cream for everyone in attendance! The dealership (not to be out done), provided 6 tickets to Harley Davidson’s 110th Anniversary Celebration in Milwaukee which we raffled off to those in attendance. If you’ve never visited Cheri O’s in Ashland, I’d highly recommend it! Remember, August’s Chapter meeting will be held in conjunction with the Anniversary Celebration at Two Rivers and in September, we’ll be scheduling another Chapter Meeting/Ride. Stay tuned! As you know, this year’s efforts at the Day of the Hog were also very successful and last month we had our 8th Annual Day of the Hog golf tournament. Many thanks to Darin Caster, the Dillon Brothers and their employees, and all the volunteers from EVH who made this happen. Combining the Day of the Hog with the Golf Tournament, this year’s efforts for MDA netted approximately $61,000!! Way to go team! We are all grateful for the dedication and effort given to this event by our members each year. Let’s hope and pray that a cure is found SOON! Cecil – Director of the best H.O.G. Chapter in the world! EVH Anniversary recognition. Out of 136 charter members who joined EVH in 2003, I’d like to recognize 31 that are still members in 2013. They are: John Berger Kevin Kelsey Pam Berger Traci Kelsey Cecil Brasher Tom Kindler Patricia Brasher Wayne Malone Sid Dillon Randall Morris Blake Dillon Michael Naccarato Dave Dunn Ron Niederhaus Faith Dunn Rod Perrin John Flowers Larry Remmers Martin Franks John Romano Bob Gilbreath Robert Stoltenberg Holly Gilbreath Oren Tiarks Al Ginby Neil Vigstol Scott Jones Ken Vopnford Craig Kelley Tim Walker Stan Zych From Our LOH Officer Sally Foisey [email protected] Thank you to Cathy and Gener for graciously hosting the swim party and barbecue. Thanks to Leo as well for all that tasty barbecue. It was easy to see that everyone was having a great time – take a look at those happy and relaxed faces in the pictures posted on the chapter website. Next up will be the annual LOH Cookie Run on September 21st. I’ve been working on the route and stations we’ll visit and will have more to report in next month’s newsletter. There’s a day of fun planned for October 5th with a bus ride to a winery and then dinner. Be sure and check the details on the flyer in this newsletter. The View from the Back of the Bike Tad Volkmann [email protected] … Then and Now … Pat & Mike Roth Our life-long love affair with motorcycles, especially Harleys, began while we both were in our teen years, growing up in opposite ends of Omaha and separated by almost of decade in ages. I am a S.O.B. (South Omaha Babe) and Mike is a North 16th Street, Tech High School, guy living in the “hood”. Pat’s brother Dan had an early 1960s 800 Sportster just before he joined the Navy during the Vietnam era. There are still vivid memories of that distinctive Harley growl when he fired up his bike. And this sensory trigger is awakened each time we get ready for a ride and are in a group lining up for a cruise. Mike’s earliest acquisitions included 1961 and 1962 Hummers; a Honda 160; a Suzuki; a Triumph; and a Honda four-cycle 500. Then we had a dry period of no motorcycles for more than 25 years. Before the Honda 500 was sold, Pat and Mike had a long, serious discussion to get a motorcycle as soon as they could and that this next motorcycle had to be a Harley. We even made a pinky-promise with each other. Part of the heated discussion included a “pro” and “con” list [which was a multi-page document) that Pat developed on why we needed to keep our motorcycle for years and years. The wait period for the Harley was filled in with a house move to southwest Omaha and continued interest in motor sports. There was a four-wheel drive [Jeeps/ trucks/dune buggies] group and playing in the mud, sand, dirt hills, road rallies, etc. After doing it in the dirt for a number of years, we acquired a 1937 Chevrolet Custom Classic street rod and continued to camp … in hotels and motels … attend show n’ shine events, and compete in time/distance/speed events, etc. In late 2004 we sold the street rod to one of the Southern California Amato people. We used eBay as our agent and never looked back at other street rods since that time. In continuing the search for our Harley … we went to the Dillon’s new dealership in northwest Omaha to see what we could find. We ended up taking home a 2001 Sportster 1200. After realizing we needed a larger [read more power] bike for longer trips … we went back to the dealership to order a 2008 Ultra Classic. We had our beautiful purple beastie for just over four years. Unfortunately, Pat was forbidden to climb on as a passenger because her osteo-arthritic damaged knees had greatly deteriorated. She was relegated to following any group rides in her “cage”. Lucky for us, EVHOG had plenty of fun activities in addition to group rides so Pat didn’t feel left out. continued on next page…. Then and Now Continued…… Lo and behold, during the 2011 Dillon demo days, Pat and Mike rode a new tri-glide. They had previously done some research on conversions by stopping by the Lehman shop in Spearfish SD and then riding a conversion from a local Omaha shop. The Omaha conversion ride was so dangerous that we were almost ready to write that option off our list. Thankfully, the Harley-Davidson conversion was engineered a thousand times better than the locally-owned bike so after the demo ride, we wheeled and dealed with Dillon’s to become proud owners of a triglide. Ironically, that September ride to Dillon’s on the Ultra Classic was the first and last time in three years that Pat was a passenger on the Ultra. Thankfully both of her knees were successfully converted to bionic parts and she had the doctor’s release to ride the Harley again. Shortly after the release, we saw the orthopedic surgeon at Stella’s in Bellevue. Dr. Sam hopped onto the tri-glide and gave us a smile with his double thumbs-up approval. Our first overnight ride with EVHOG was the 2012 trip to Mackinaw Island in Upper Michigan. What a great experience even though the heat was challenging. It was very inspiring and commendable to see the six women riders tough out the entire ride alongside the men. We hope to go on more long-distance rides in coming years. We have been members since September 2008 and have met incredibly awesome people who have become great friends. What really stands out to us is when we were part of the street rod club years ago and if someone experienced car troubles; their attitudes were every man for themselves. Usually no one would stay behind to make sure you could get your car running again to continue the journey. EVHOG members look out for each other and care for the group’s safety and well-being whether you are a new member or a seasoned rider. This kind of camaraderie is rare in a lot of today’s social circles. We are hopeful to have many more years of great rides and great times hanging with the special people of EVHOG. ~ Pat and Mike (on the Trike) Roth August 2013 Check Calendar at www.evhog.net for latest details and information August 1, 2013 Throttle Thursdays at Dillon Brothers.
