woes, bar regular Jacob offers to help Cal ‘get
back in the game’ by giving him a makeover and
teaching him how to be a player. Things soon get

trust plays out in the neighborhood, with strong
performances from Stone and Carrell, with a

tracks the evolution of the first fixed-wing aircraft
all the way to space-capable shuttles.

Part three in The Hobbit trilogy brings
a spell-binding end to Peter Jackson’s six-film
exploration of the magical world of Middle Earth
The Hobbit:
The Battle of
the Five Armies
the epic fantasy flick, fully
of fury and inner strife as he
battles his own demons as
well as the ones in the real
world. His performance is
captivating and commands
your attention whenever he’s
on screen.
Smaug’s unguarded
treasure in the Lonely
Mountain sets in motion a
series of events that lead to
the coming together of the
five armies mentioned in the
title of the film.
Just like the obliteration
of Laketown, the movie’s
extended final battle is filled
with visual flairs that keep
you on the edge of your
seat the entire time. Taking
up almost an hour of screen
time, it’s clear that Jackson
went all out with it, making
sure to please both the
hardened Tolkenites as well
as the more casual fans of
the series.
Jackson however
manages to keep the
overarching moral of the film,
namely that with great power
comes great responsibility –
an ideal that runs through the
Lord of the Rings trilogy as
well. Watch out for a ton of
Easter eggs and references
to pick up on as well. For
now though, we say goodbye
to Jackon’s Middle Earth.

This Is Where I Leave You
sees director Shawn Levy
(Night At The Museum

craft his most engaging

together love, family ties,
life and death with wholly
entertaining results.

Judd’s family – Wendy

the mix, along with their
significant others who join
the shiva. Tensions run
high, secrets are revealed,
old loves reunited,

slapstick situations. Black
humour mingles with
bittersweet tragedy, with a
sprinkle of joy and misery
that mirrors everyday life
in more ways than one.

Fonda is perfectly cast

Both the main and
supporting characters
develop nicely throughout
the story, but it is Bateman
who truly anchors the film
with a wholly sensitive,

while Fey, known for her

a genuinely emotional
performance.

serious and smart look
at a family in mourning,
peppered with hidden joys

ARGUABLY ALEXANDERY
PAYNE’S MOST POIGNANT
FILM, Nebraska gets under
your skin and tugs at your
heart strings all while
delivering a ton of gags
This black and white
outing from Oscar winning
director Alexander Payne
takes viewers through the
sprawling and beautiful
Midwest, with breathtaking
cinematography provided
by Phedon Papamichael.
Nebraska is Payne’s home
state and like in his previous
films (Citizen Ruth, Election,
About Schmidt and
Sideways), he fills what seem
like boring and dull towns
with characters that develop
an immense amount of depth
and affection as the story
unravels.
Follow David Grant (Will
Forte), the son of the ailing
and alcoholic Woody (Bruce
Dern), on a journey across
many states. Woody believes
he has hit the jackpot in
a mega sweepstakes and
wants to claim his prize in
Lincoln, Nebraska (while
living in Montana). David
sees the winning letter and
realises instantly that it is a
marketing scam, but goes
along for the ride with his
father anyway.
Bob Nelson’s screenplay
contains numerous pearls
of wisdom and insights into
old age and the struggle
to remain free despite
a weakening mind and
body. Solid performances
from Forte and especially
Dern, who have instant
chemistry on screen, carry
the film alongside supporting
characters, brother Ross
(Bob Odenkirk) and the
cantankerous, no-nonsense
mom Kate (brilliantly played
by June Squibb).
Nebraska stands as one
of 2013’s most striking films,
having been nominated for
the Palme d’Or at the 2013
Cannes Film Festival, with
Dern taking home the Best
Actor award.
