Book Week Activities
Book Swap
Next Monday and Tuesday books (4 per person) and the $2 donation will be collected outside the library
from 8:30 – 9am. Funds will go to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
Parents and pre-schoolers are welcome to participate.
Vouchers will be distributed on Tuesday.
Starting at 8:30 on Wednesday, students will be able to swap a voucher for a book. The books will be
outside the hall. Students who are absent on Wednesday can select books on the following Monday – see
Ms Brown.
Book Parade
Our Book Character Parade will be after recess on Wednesday at the COLA.
All are welcome to attend and dress up if you wish.
Book Week artwork will be on display in the library and the primary classrooms.
The Children’s Book Council of Australia has announced the winning Australian books for this year. They
are:
Picture Book- Rules of Summer by Shaun Tan
Early Childhood – The Swap by Jan Omerod
Younger Readers (our Primary students) – A Very Unusual Pursuit by Catherine Jinks
Information Books – Jeremy by Christopher Faille
Each of these books (and the runners-up) is on display in the library foyer. Thank you to the P&C for
providing the funds for their purchase.

ICAS Writing Competition Results
Results have been received from the University of New South Wales for Blaxland East students who
entered the ICAS (International Competition and Assessment for Schools) Writing Competition for 2014.
Students from Blaxland East again achieved outstanding results when they participated this year. Those
students whose achievements were outstanding were rewarded with certificates of Merit, Credit, Distinction
and High Distinction.
These ICAS tests are designed to assess students’ academic abilities in aspects of Writing such as Genre,
Grammar, Syntax, Punctuation and Spelling. Each year, many BEPS students take the plunge and attempt
these tests, putting themselves up against gifted and talented students from all parts of Australia, New
Zealand and parts of Asia. These students deserve the highest praise for their efforts and participation.

Competition Coordinator
Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER)
Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students
were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of education programs with a focus on Australia’s
history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the
national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of
the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament
and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon
completion of the excursion.

The Land of Sweets
The Land of Sweets is a magical land found at the top of the Faraway Tree. There
were multicolour trees that are tasty lollipops. There are blue circle clouds with
flying pigs. There is an upside down rainbow and people can ride down it. They can
eat the ground. There are Easter Eggs in the ground at winter.

The Land of Footballs
The Land of Footballs is awesome with crowds and crowds of people. All the
footballs are free and they grow football trees. People can play and do lots of
games like tip and bull rush and play in the classroom with toys. People can play all
of the games every day.

The Land of Candy
The Land of Candy is a yummy land at the top of the Faraway Tree. In Candy Land the
grass is candy canes. The trees are rainbow coloured and the bark is chocolate. They
shine brightly in the sun.

The Land of Me
The Land of Me is a land of Mes. There are lots of mes. The sky drops undies and
people are wearing the same dresses. All the dresses are yellow and green.

The Land of Upside Down Soccer
The Land of Upside Down Soccer is a magical land found at the top of the
Faraway Tree. The land has Jesse in it and we were playing soccer upside down.
People can float wherever they want and they can go up in the sky. They also
can eat the grass because it is made out of bubble gum and it explodes when you
kick it in the goals.

The Land of Candy is a wonderful land that is found at the top of the Far Away Tree. It
has a fairy floss sun and the trees are made out of chocolate and their leave are made
out of chocolate money. There’s jelly grass next to it there’s a custard lake. Candy
people also live there.

The Land of Sport is an awesome land found at the top of the Far Away Tree.
There are big brown rocks and soft spongy grass. There is a bright sun to help
the soccer people know where they are going. Zach won the soccer game. There
is a green bubble gum ball. If you kick it too hard it will burst.

clouds are candyfloss you can lick the clouds the houses are lollypops. When you
go inside you can see candy everywhere, the lollypops are chocolate, and the laws

The Land of Jelly is a yummy land. There are mountains of jelly. You can eat them or
jump on them. It is fun to jump. You can eat the jelly. It is a yummy land. And it is fun in
the Land of Jelly.

The Land of Lollies is sweet land found at the top of the Faraway Tree. Rainbow
snow falls out of rainbow. Candy flowers are rainbow candy coloured and are
very, very, very candy to eat. When you catch a bird you can eat them. A tree
that grows in winter in candy land when you lick the tree it changes colour.

jump on the jelly hills they will explode. The sky is purple all day and all night. The sun
glows everyday and at night.

rainbow lolly pop tree that tastes like lollypops. There are pink squishy fairy floss clouds
that taste like fairy floss when you eat them. You need pink fairy floss jet packs to eat
the clouds.

likes eating ice cream and playing with toys. Everything looks like ice cream and toys grow
from trees. There are also lots of trees that smell like different types of ice cream.

There was a flying piggy and piggy 99. A pink sun shines at night. There was
a piggy that snorts randomly.

The Land of Cheeseburgers has a cheeseburger tree and a cheeseburger sign. If you
have a cheeseburger you can go to cheeseburger land.

The Land of Movie World
The Land of Movie World is a land found at the top of the Far Away Tree. This land has
so many TVs especially when you put the TV on there is 19 shows. The Movie Land
has up to 90 spots to watch some awesome shows. The grass is so squishy and it
feels like marshmallows.

The Land of Treats is a delicious land found at the top of the Far Away Tree. There are
beautiful fluffy clouds above the land. There is a lollypop tree that grows and shines in
the sunlight. There are purple birds that land on clouds and sink to other lands. People
can slide down a fabulous rainbow slippery dip. There is light green squishy grass.

Principal’s Message
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Firstly, my apologies for the lateness of this newsletter and the last one in week 4. Illness has decimated
our staff at various times in the last couple of weeks and we are only just getting on top of everything.
Thank you to everyone for their patience. Due to my absence, no message from the Principal was included
in the last newsletter, so this newsletter has a larger number of awards than usual. Please look carefully
for your child’s name!
As we near the day of the fete, please ensure you check your children’s bags for notes from the P & C
about events leading up to the fete. Don’t forget to purchase your all day ride passes! Helpers are still
needed on a variety of class stalls, so sign up for an hour or two to help make our fete a success.
Our thoughts and best wishes are with the family of Jarrod Samson-Hills who sadly passed away in an
accident last weekend. Our hearts go out to you in your loss. We can only hope that the memories you
hold will comfort you at this time of loss.
The wet weather has seen the postponement of a number of sporting activities, including the Zone
Athletics, so please check with your child for notes coming home with regard to these changes. It is
important that permission slips are returned promptly to ensure everyone can attend these events.
Once more I would like to remind all parents that they are not to drive into the carpark to pick up children as
it poses a safety threat to our students. In addition, we ask that all parents take care around the school
when dropping off or picking up students. We would hate to have an accident occur.
Congratulations to the band who placed 3rd at the Penrith Eisteddfod this week. Well done!
