The balance of ingredients must be just so, the crust should be perfectly done, the sauce seasoned to perfection and the cheese melted to heavenly strands of joy! Rocco’s Pizza and Pasta of St. James has been keeping their loyal customers happy for years and has recently completed a beautiful top to bottom renovation, complete with outdoor tables for your dining pleasure! Owners and St. James residents Jerry DiGiovanna and Jessica Diffendale are thrilled with the positive and wonderful feedback from the community on Rocco’s Pizza and Pasta’s new look. Rocco’s Pizza and Pasta offers the irresistible flavors of Italian cuisine – using only the finest and freshest ingredients. From their unique and distinctive pizzas to traditional home cooked pastas, soups, salads, chicken, veal and seafood dishes, Rocco’s Pizza and Pasta strives to make each meal a memorable one. Who could resist a slice of Rocco’s famous baby eggplant pizza? Baby eggplant has a very thin skin and a sweet delicate flavor. It is sautéed with extra virgin olive oil, fresh tomato sauce, basil, garlic and light mozzarella cheese. Head pizza makers Paul and Carlos, with over 30 years experience, take pride in consistently crafting the highest standards of the art of pizza making with each and every pie that comes out of their ovens. The pizza crust at Rocco’s is flavorful and crispy and quite frankly, incredible! When I asked Paul to share the success of his crust his answer was simple – each and every pie is sprinkled with love! Paul and Carlo’s passion for pizza has kept the counter of Rocco’s hopping – no stale or overcooked pizza here, just fresh and delicious slices of heaven. Back in the kitchen, chefs Giovanni and Raymond prepare fresh soups from scratch, rotating a selection of Pasta Fagioli, Minestrone, Tortellini in Brodo, Lentil, Stracciatella and a special soup of the day. The veal dishes at Rocco’s are tender and light – be sure to try the Veal alla Sorrentino, sauteed with eggplant and wine and topped with pro- OUR TOWN • MAY 2013 sciutto and mozzarella. Chicken shines in one of the best Piccata recipes in town, delicate and flavorful. Communion and graduation season is here, why not let Rocco’s cater your next party? Be sure to check out Rocco’s lunch specials, available 7 days a week, between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. A terrific value – you receive a choice of any two items from heros, soup or salads (Rocco’s has the best Caesar salad around!) and includes a free soda. Rocco’s has added Italian ices to the menu and offers zeppoles on Friday and Saturday. Gluten free pizza and pasta is always available as well as whole wheat pizza. Watch for additional gluten free dinner selections coming soon. Rocco’s Pizza and Pasta now delivers and accepts credit cards. Be sure to like them on facebook and call for daily specials. Jerry and Jessica and the entire staff at Rocco’s Pizza and Pasta are proud to sponsor a number of community organizations and sports teams here in St. James and thank their loyal customers for their continued patronage. Nowick, of St. James, encourages residents to clean out their medicine cabinets. Most residents possess prescription or over the counter medications to treat illnesses or health issues; and expired or unused products can harm the environment and contaminate public drinking water supplies when flushed down the toilet or disposed of improperly. In addition to environmental concerns, abuse of prescription drugs is rapidly increasing. By disposing of unnecessary medications in a family’s medicine cabinet, the risk of someone else taking these pills can be avoided. In 2008, Suffolk County established the Suffolk County Pharmaceutical Disposal Program, known as operation Medicine Cabinet, which allows residents to deposit unused or expired medications, including controlled substances, in a secure receptacle located in the lobby of Suffolk County Police Precincts. The Fourth Police Precinct, which is closest for Smithtown residents, is equipped to collect and properly dispose of unwanted medications and is open 24 hours a day/seven days a week. It is located at 727 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge. Medications should be placed in a plastic bag. Last year Suffolk Leg. Lynne C. The DACBSP (Diplomate American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians) certification requires the doctor to first achieve CCSP (Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician) certification. The CCSP requires the doctor to attend a minimum of 100 hours of a 120 hour postgraduate CCSP program. The doctor must take and successfully pass a comprehensive written examination to receive the CCSP certification. Once CCSP status has been achieved, the doctor may work toward DACBSP certification. To do so, the doctor must attend an additional minimum of 200 class hours. Doctors wishing to achieve DACBSP status then have four basic components they must successfully complete within three years of completion of the DACBSP Program. Bollhofer was awarded Boy Scouting’s highest rank of eagle Scout at a ceremony with Troop 7 of St. James. Less than 4% of all Scouts achieve the eagle rank. In addition to earning at least 21 merit badges, performing many hours of community service and showing leadership over his scouting career, Kyle was required to plan, lead and complete a community service project and raise the money for it. At the request of the Smithtown Historical Society, he chose to replace the picket fence along Middle Country Road in front of the Society’s Franklin Arthur Farm. With the help of fellow scouts, family and friends, Kyle raised almost $1,000 by redeeming and recycling almost 20,000 bottles and cans. He then oversaw the removal of the 190-foot long old fence and the painting, construction and installation of the new fence and gate. The fence pickets were custom made in an assembly line fashion involving 15 scouts and adults in one day. A recent tally has determined that more than 100 million hours of service have been spent performing all of the eagle Scout service projects in the U.S. during the past 100 years, likely making these projects the single greatest youth service initiative in history, and one that has Above, Kyle painting the fence. Right: Kyle with Scoutmaster Thomas Stumpf. touched every community in America in an important way. Kyle proudly joins his brother Joe and father in the rank of eagle Scout. Kyle will be graduating from Ward Melville High School in June and attending Lehigh University. He lives in Head of the Harbor with his sister Aly, brother Joe and parents, Kelly and Joe. $25-,%33/.3s$25-,%33/.3s$25-,%33/.3 Private Drum Lessons with John Miceli in our State-of-the-Art Recording/Teaching Studio s!LLLEVELSFROM"EGINNERTO!DVANCED s.933-!0REPARATION s7ENOWOFFERBEGINNER"ASSLESSONS to schedule your private lessons l l Ca or email: [email protected] For resume information, please visit: john-miceli.com 631-240-0690 $25-,%33/.3s$25-,%33/.3s$25-,%33/.3 s$25-,%33/.3s$25-,%33/.3s$25-,%33/.3s$25-,%33/.3s Jennifer Fasano Branch Manager Monday - Thursday 8:30am - 3:00pm Friday 8:30am - 6:00pm Saturday 8:30am - 2:00pm Drive Up: Same as Branch Hours 1RUWK&RXQWU\5G6W-DPHV1< ZZZP\1<&%FRP s$25-,%33/.3s$25-,%33/.3s$25-,%33/.3s$25-,%33/.3s OUR TOWN • MAY 2013 – 25 – FIRE UP THE GRILL WITH THIS MEMORIAL DAY From our selection of mouth-watering steaks to homemade Italian sausage & special marinades! JAMES Snowman, the Cinderella Horse of Hollandia Farms by Bradley Harris, Smithtown Historian recently I was asked by the folks living in the fairfield condominium complex if I would write about the people that used to live along Moriches road where the condominiums are now to be found. that led me back to the incredible story of Snowman, an old pennsylvania plow horse that a man named Harry de leyer transformed into a national jumping champion. this is a story I wrote for the Smithtown News back in July of 2008 and I am reprinting it in Our Town because it is such a great story that it deserves to be retold. It is also a story that begins in a farmhouse on the west side of Moriches road very near the fairfield condominiums. the information contained in this article comes from books and articles published about Snowman, and from a personal interview I had with Johanna de leyer, ST. JAMES who I am sad to say passed away last year. The story of Snowman begins long ago in 1956, the year Harry de Leyer was just beginning to establish his own stable for horses in St. James. In 1955, Harry and his pretty young wife Johanna purchased a “chicken farm” on Moriches Road in St. James. The de Leyers bought a farmhouse, along with a chicken house that stood behind it, on one and a half acres of land. (The farmhouse is still standing on the west side of Moriches Road opposite the building that houses Sports Authority and Staples. The chicken house that used to stand behind the farmhouse burned down some years ago.) Harry needed a house for his rapidly growing family, and he needed a barn where he could stable a string of horses that he had been using to teach riding to the girls at Knox School. The de Leyers purchased the house, moved in, and with the continued on facing page Snowman in his stall in the converted chicken coop at Hollandia Farms. Snowman was pampered; he even had carpeting in his stall. Photograph courtesy of Johanna de Leyer. Something Great Is Now Even Better! Although the acre and a half of property did not give them enough room for a pasture, they did find space for one small riding paddock. Since the de Leyers were recent Dutch immigrants, having come to America in 1950, they decided to call their stable Hollandia Farms. “One wintry Monday in February 1956, 28-year-old” Harry de Leyer “set out from his small riding stable in St. James, Long Island, for the weekly horse auction in New Holland, Pa.” It was Harry’s intent to see if he could purchase horses “to add to his stable” of horses that he used to teach riding at Knox School. Unfortunately, snow squalls and a flat tire caused him to arrive late for the auction and he arrived just as the last of the “‘killers’ – worn-out work horses that nobody wanted,” were being loaded into a truck headed for Milton Potter’s slaughterhouse in Northport, L.I. “Suddenly Harry spotted a big gray gelding plodding up the ramp” and his attention was drawn to the horse. “The horse was chunky, but lighter than the others, and there was a spirited pitch to his ears, a brightness in his eyes” and Harry swore to Johanna that the horse actually winked at him. This prompted Harry to ask that the horse be brought back off the truck so that he might see him. Harry looked the big gray gelding over, noting the “the animal’s ribs showed, his coat was matted with dirt and manure,” and “there were sores on his legs.” (Philip B. Kunhardt, “The Farm Horse That Became a Champion,” Reader’s Digest, July 1960, pp. 92-96.) But Harry liked the size of the big plow horse, and its gentle disposition, and decided that he would be a good horse for novice riders and S P E A K I N G some of the heavier girls at the school. So Harry offered to buy the horse from the meat dealer who had paid $60 for the horse at the auction. Johanna and the three kids, Joseph, Harriet and Martin, watched as their new horse was unloaded from the truck. The big gray horse was so happy to be off the truck that he stood quietly as the rapidly falling snow covered him with a white blanket. When he “raised his head” and cocked his ears forward, the kids said he looked like a snowman and that became the horse’s name – Snowman. (Rutherford Montgomery, op. cit., pp. 14-15.) The de Leyer kids helped their father groom their new horse. “They washed Snowman as many times as was necessary to get the dirt and slime out of his coat and off his skin. They clipped him slightly and combed The farmhouse of the chicken farm on Moriches Road in St. James that the de Leyers purchased in 1955 when Hollandia Farms started. It was clear that he would be a gentle horse for children to ride and Harry de Leyer now had to teach the big workhorse how to become a sure-footed riding horse. That presented a bit of a problem that Harry solved by setting out a series of poles on the ground and having the horse learn how to step over the poles without disrupting them. “The trick, in walking over the poles was to get the horse to lift his feet high and space his steps right.” After many practice sessions, Snowman learned how to do this and stepped over the poles, then he was taught how to trot over the poles, and finally he learned how to cantor over the poles without hitting them. At the same time, Harry got the horse used to having a saddle and rider on his back. So in a relatively short span of time, Snowman was ready to join the other horses at Knox School and he remained at the school throughout the spring and quickly became a favorite horse for many of the girls. (Rutherford Montgomery, op. cit., pp. 16-19.) In the summer, when the school year came to an end, Knox School closed down and Harry had to bring his horses back to his stable in St. James. Snowman was back in his stall to the delight of the de Leyer kids. But he didn’t stay long since a neighbor who was a local chiropractor, Dr. Robert Rugen, was interested in buying a horse for his young son to ride. When he visited the stable and saw Snowman, he offered to buy him for $160 – double the price that Harry had paid for the horse. With so many horses in his stable, and little money coming in over the summer, Harry sold Snowman with the understanding that if the horse wasn’t suitable, then Dr. Rugen would return the horse to Harry and get his $160 back. The de Leyer kids were heartbroken but were consoled by the fact that Snowman was only moving to a barn on Stony Brook Road, across some open potato fields, and that they would still be able to see and visit with the horse. It turned out that Snowman wasn’t gone for long. Dr. Rugen took the horse home, put him in his corral, and the next morning Snowman turned up in the corral at Hollandia Farm. Snowman persisted in “jumping the doccontninued on page 44 r.J.K. gArDenS, inC. Harry didn’t believe that Snowman was a jumper, but when he saw the big horse gleefully jumping obstacles in own corral, he quickly became a believer. Since the horse seemed to actually enjoy jumping, Harry decided to give Snowman special training to become a jumper. As a nine-year-old horse that had spent much of its life hitched to a plow, “Snowman had a lot to learn and a lot to unlearn” about open jumping in a horse show. “In open jumping the performance of a horse is all that counts. The rules call for a loss of points called a ‘fault’ if the horse touches a pole or knocks one down with fore- or hind feet, refuses to take a barrier, or unsaddles his rider, or leaves the course.” Snowman had to learn how to take jumps over obstacles without causing faults and Harry patiently introduced the horse “to the obstacles that he would face at a show: the coop, which looks like an A-roofed chicken house; the rail, which is a rail suspended between two posts; the gate, which is just that, a gate with bars; natural rails, which are two posts with rails between them; brush and fence, which is a fence with brush piled on each side. An aiken is a fenced-in hedge with the brush at the top of the rails. The hog’s back is a set of three rails with the center rail higher than the others.” All of these jumps and others that resembled “obstacles a horse might meet in a cross-country run,” Snowman had to learn to jump and clear. (Rutherford Montgomery, op. cit., pp. 49-50.) “Probably no one but Harry de Leyer would have had the persistence and patience to spend hours and days and weeks teaching an easy going plow horse to face such a formidable task as mastering all of the obstacles in a championship show. Harry took the time, and he brought Snowman along slowly, building up his power and endurance, teaching him that every jump had to be his best.” Throughout 1957 and into the spring of 1958, Harry worked with Snowman getting him ready for comcontinued on page 46 Smithaven Grooming 810 Middle Country Road Saint James, NY 11780 631-656-6033 Come Visit our newly Renovated & Remodeled Facility Featuring the FURminator SHeD-leSS Treatment An amazing process that dramatically decreases shedding! $5.00 oFF doG GrooMiNG With Coupon • Expires 6/18/13 Hours: Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. • Saturday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. OUR TOWN • MAY 2013 – 45 – KEMPO • KICK BOXING • KUNG FU • GRAPPLING • JU-JITSU 617-5148 50 Family owned and operated by n.y.S. The jumps “became higher and the obstacles wider” until Harry felt that Snowman was confident and ready to participate in a professional horse show. (Rutherford Montgomery, op. cit., pp. 49-53.) Finally in April of 1958, Harry “decided to put the big gray to his first real test – at the Sands Point Horse Show on Long Island, where he would compete with some of the top open jumpers in the land.” Harry and his family went to the show at Sands Point with four horses that were entered into competition and Harry was determined to ride them all. “Harry’s first ride was on Wayward Wind in the first year green hunter contest” and when the competition was over, Wayward Wind was the winner. In the “second-year green-hunter stake,” Harry rode an experienced horse named Cicero and he won first place honors again. And then he won “the greenjumper stake and the greenjumper championship” on a horse named Night Arrest. The crowd watched anxiously to see the horse that Harry de Leyer was going to ride in the top event of the day – the open jumping competition. When Harry brought Snowman into the field, a hush fell over the crowd as they stared at “a broadbeamed farm horse as he ambled through the gate” and joined the assembled thoroughbreds waiting to begin the competition. The big gray horse looked so out of place because of his size and shape that some adults in the audience began to “laugh out loud.” The laughter grew as people got a good look at the plow horse that dared to challenge the thoroughbred jumpers who were entered in the competition. As far as the crowd was concerned, Snowman didn’t stand a chance. (Rutherford Montgomery, op. Harry de Leyer taking Snowman over a jump known as a coop on the obstacle course at Knox School. Since Snowman’s mane is braided, Harry is wearing “pinks,” and appears to have a number plaque on his back, it is safe to assume that a jumping competition was in progress. Snowman was obviously clearing this jump with room to spare. Photograph courtesy of Johanna de Leyer. cit., pp. 59-61.) The laughter slowly died out as Snowman made his run over the obstacle course and “jumped effortlessly and without any fuss.” By the end of the second day of competition, the laughter stopped when it was discovered that the big gray gelding named Snowman was tied for first place with a champion jumper named Andante. everyone looked forward to the final day of competition. But what the spectators didn’t realize was that Snowman had cut his foreleg on the very last jump. One of his hind legs had scraped the skin off the back of a foreleg and the leg was bleeding badly. It looked like Snowman was out of the competition. But Harry cleaned and bound the wound, and packed the leg in ice. Throughout the night, Harry replenished the ice whenever it melted down and prayed that Snowman’s leg would not be swollen and stiff in the morning. An exhausted Harry OUR TOWN • MAY 2013 de Leyer slumped against the stable wall later that night and fell asleep. When he awakened the next morning in broad daylight, “Snowman was watching him eagerly” and seemed to be “resting his weight on both forelimbs.” When Harry removed the empty ice pack from around his leg, there was no sign of swelling. So Harry and Johanna immediately took Snowman to an exercise paddock to see if the movement of his leg would be restricted. Harry released the horse and “he galloped away.” At Harry’s urging, Snowman ran toward a barrier “and sailed over it.” He appeared to be all right and Harry decided to keep Snowman in the competition for the third and final day. Our current digs, the home of our design firm and a new endeavor, a retail store (uniquely natalie) featuring a variety of “designer picks” from our wonderful sources, seems to have already attracted visitors even though we are not yet officially open. Our staff is adjusting, unpacking and keeping our clients happy, and I am “playing house” with Lillian, our “designer/shopkeeper” whose experience in store ownership is as invaluable as her energy and expertise. So why did we come out of the closet, or the theatre, if you will? Perhaps I wanted to reconnect with the folks in St. James on another level and share the goodies we are privileged to work with every day – or – maybe, after 40 years, it’s in my blood – or – I’m just plain out of my mind. But It seemed like a natural segue. Since I began my Home Decorating Club in 2001, this vehicle has taken me into so many homes and allowed me the privilege of sharing my ideas and commitment with both client and homeowner alike. So here we are, a part of the St. James business community since 1985, and homeowner since 1976, opening our doors as the new guys on the block. St. James – are you ready for us – the seminars, the sources, the designer goods we will have in our store? We are getting ready for you. Let us know how we can help with your fabrics, window treatments, wallpaper, furniture, accessories and more, and pick-up a copy of “design pro on the go - do-It-yourself Workbook,” get some answers to your design questions, and see what we are all about. Over the wonderful years I have written this column, I have come to know many of you through facebook and your emails. Now, let’s finally meet, and say “hi” face-to-face. We’re ready for the logical next step to OUR TOWN • MAY 2013 help you create the home of your dreams, (no matter what the budget), because we know how life changes for the better when you realize its nurturing and empowering effects. We will be happy to add you to our growing list of over 15,000 Natalie Weinstein Home Decorating Club members receiving tips, invites to free informative seminars, and entree to great sources, just in time for the decorating season. Let us help you make your home all it can be for you and your family. editor’s note: natalie Weinstein, aSId, is president of natalie Weinstein design associates and the natalie Weinstein Home decorating Club with over 15,000 members on long Island. It is PeReNNIAL GARDeNING MONTH, the beginning of summer, end of the school year for most, and we honor our fathers on the 16th. If you are planting some decorative planters, think bigger rather than smaller. A large container with larger specimens will make more of a visual impact. Choose larger plants of roughly the same size, this way they can grow up together. The larger container will hold the moisture longer, very important during those hot, dry summer months. If your plants are not stressed they will grow better and thus look lusher. When choosing plants, do not overlook foliage plants. Besides the garden foliage plants, check out the houseplant section. There you will find so many colors, textures and different shaped plants. Another benefit is that at the end of the season you can dig it up and enjoy it inside as a houseplant. A starting point for your plant selection should be a bold, somewhat larger main plant. The trend in the past has been a spike-shaped plant or ornamental grass. Pick one that catches your eye and work around that plant. Complementary colors, upright and cascading plants can complete the look. Your container will have to be monitored carefully for moisture. As water and nutrients leech out every time you water, you will need to fertilize often. Your flowering plants probably will need a feeding of water-soluble fertilizer every two weeks. As things heat up, your plants may need more frequent feedings, keep an eye out. The beginning of the month is time to finish planting your perennial garden. This will give the plants time to get established before the real heat of the summer. As the weather does warm up, add a few inches of mulch to all the beds. Stake plants before they get top heavy, leggy and flop over. There are all types of stakes available or just use some branches you have pruned from shrubs and trees. Consider planting so that some taller, weaker plants will lean on some sturdier, bushy types. Take time to deadhead your flowering plants, it encourages the plant to keep blooming. Have the children come out to help. It is a nice, quiet time to spend together. You will also have to keep weeding. Those unwanted plants will use up the water and nutrients in the soil. Take another look at some of those weeds though, they could have another life in your salad bowl. We all know of the dandelion. This bitter green is a healthy addition to your salad. Ounce per ounce the OUR TOWN • MAY 2013 leaves are higher in vitamin A than broccoli, carrots or spinach. It also contains vitamin C and e, potassium, iron, calcium and zinc. You can buy them in most supermarkets or just go to your lawn and pick some. The best are the young leaves gathered during the cooler months as they start to grow. After the plant blooms, the leaves get really bitter. Another abundant, wild green is lambs quarters, and here too, the most desirable leaves are the small, young ones. These greens are interchangeable in recipes calling for spinach. Two other easily found weeds are chickweed and the succulent stems and leaves of purslane. Both are rich in vitamins, with purslane stems containing the greatest source of Omega-3 fatty acids in the garden world. Kids are fascinated by the fact they can eat weeds, but please be cautious and teach them not to pick and eat anything by themselves. Make sure you have properly identified the plant and be certain that it has not been sprayed with any fertilizers or pesticides. There are many reference books available, these are just a few good ones: the Encyclopedia of Edible plants of north america, by Francois Couplan and James A. Duke; also Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal plants in Wild (and not So Wild places), by Steve Brill; and Stalking the Wild asparagus, by euell Gibbons. HAPPY HARVeSTING. “What is a weed? a plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered.”–RALPH WALDO eMeRSON editor’s note: June liardi, a St. James resident for over 30 years, is a wife and mother of three sons. June will be writing articles on gardening, nature related craft projects and family activities. – 73 – GREAT TIME TO BUY CHAIN SAWS STARTING AT $17995 FS 40 C-E TRIMMER 16995 BLOWERS STARTING AT $14995 FS 56 RC-E TRIMMER 22995 $ $ Lightweight, fuel-efficient trimmer Versatile, straight-shaft trimmer STIHL Easy2Start™ system makes starting almost effortless FREE TRIMMER LINE WITH FS 40 C-E PURCHASE A $1299 NES-SRP value. Those who chase yield by going further out on the curve (longer maturities, see chart below) will face a dangerous amount of “duration” risk. Duration is a statistical measurement of interest rate sensitivity. So for example, let’s say the 30 year Treasury has a duration of 20. That would mean if interest rates were to suddenly spike by just 1%, the resulting depreciation of that bond would be 20%. Investors may mitigate duration risk by keeping maturities shorter, but then they will face a different peril – inflation risk. If inflation is running 2% annually (wishful thinking), a 3 year Treasury with a yield of 0.30% will generate a guaranteed loss of purchasing power of 1.70% (2% - 0.30%) each year. Daily Treasury Yield Curve as of May 1st. MATURITY 1 year 3 years 5 years 10 years 20 years 30 years RATE 0.11% 0.30% 0.65% 1.66% 2.44% 2.83% Since it’s fairly typical for investors to have a significant allocation of their wealth directed towards fixed income oriented investments, you can see the conundrum. How does one reduce duration risk without succumb- ing to inflation risk? From my perch, the days of holding a simple laddered portfolio of staggered maturities and clipping coupons are gone. A more active approach to fixed income is required in this age of ultra-low rates. Here’s a few ideas as to what I look for to help sidestep this trap: 1. Fixed income investments where returns are not reliant upon interest rates – Market Linked Notes are a great example. I’ve recently purchased Notes that provide an uncapped upside return on the S&P 500. However, if the S&P declines, there is a principal guarantee against any losses. Like any debt instrument, the guarantee is only as good as the credit of the issuing firm so one has to be selective. But the over-riding point is that there are fixed income vehicles out there where the return profile is not dependent upon the direction of interest rates. 2. Non-traditional strategies – There’s a small group of managers that I trust to expand the set of tools with which they ply their trade. One will buy high yield muni bonds to generate tax-free income while shorting Treasuries to reduce duration risk. Another muni bond manager I like will seek to hedge inflation risk through the use of inflation indexed derivatives. Yet another generated a 23% gain last year by being an active trader and closed the year with a portfolio having a duration below zero. 3. Opportunistic global strategies – Yields are low around the world but by introducing global bonds into the portfolio one can gain exposure to another return stream – foreign OUR TOWN • MAY 2013 currencies. In addition, there are potential gains to be had by opportunistically trading the volatility of foreign markets. And you might agree that such a month is useful, when you consider the following: • Three in 10 workers entering the workforce today will become disabled before retiring, according to the Social Security Administration. • At age 42, you are four times more likely to become seriously disabled than to die during your working years, according to National Underwriter Life & Health. • Disability causes nearly 50% of all mortgage foreclosures, according to Health Affairs, a health policy research journal. Given these statistics, it’s not surprising that the Life and Health Insurance Foundation for education (LIFe) sponsors Disability Insurance Awareness Month to encourage Americans to address their disability income needs. Here’s the bottom line: You can be really good at budgeting your money and you can be a disciplined long-term investor – but unless you’ve protected at least a reasonable percentage of your income, your whole financial strategy is incomplete. And all your goals, such as a comfortable retirement, could be jeopardized. Of course, you may not be to- tally unfamiliar with disability income insurance; if you work for a large employer, a group disability policy may be part of your employee benefits package. If so, you should certainly accept the coverage, which may be offered to you free, or at minimal cost. However, this coverage might be inadequate to replace the income needed to allow your family to maintain its lifestyle without dipping into your investments. Consequently, you might need to think about purchasing an individual disability insurance policy. Here are some tips: Look for a policy that is “noncancellable” until you reach age 65. When you purchase a noncancellable policy, your policy continued on page 80 Markets Change. Are You Prepared? Pick the right waiting period. Typically, disability insurance policies don’t start paying benefits immediately; there’s usually a waiting (or “elimination”) period ranging from 30 days to two years. Obviously, a shorter waiting period is more desirable, but it’s probably also going to be more expensive. You may be able to give yourself the flexibility of choosing the longer waiting period if you have created an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, kept in a liquid account that offers significant preservation of principal. Avoid overly restrictive policies. You may want to avoid an “accident-only” policy or one with a limited benefit term (five and 10 years are common). These policies may be cheaper, but they don’t cover either a disabling illness or the entirety of your working life. Consider adding appropriate “riders.” It will likely add to the cost of your policy, but a cost-ofliving rider will help protect your future benefits from the effects of inflation. You also might want to add a future income options (FIO) rider, which provides you with the ability to purchase additional coverage in the future with no further medical underwriting. These suggestions are general in nature. Your financial advisor can help you determine if you need a private disability insurance policy – and, if so, what type of policy is best suited for your needs. But don’t wait too long to take action in this area. You can’t predict the future, but you should still prepare for the unexpected. editor’s note: Money Matters is a monthly feature written by Scott posner, Cfp, CrpC, a.a.M.S., an investment representative with Edward Jones Investments. this 130-year-old firm has over 10,000 offices around the world with one here in town at 542 north Country road in the old St. James School House. Probate is the process of having a will approved by the Surrogate’s Court and appointing an executor, as chosen by the testator (the will maker) in his will, to pay the estate’s taxes and debts and distribute the estate’s property in accordance with the will. A contested probate proceeding occurs when someone who claims he is in some way legally entitled to some benefit from the estate objects to the validity of the will or its interpretation, or to the way in which the executor is doing his job. Those who have read a will usually are struck by what appears to be unnecessarily formal and stuffy language. However, wills are written as they are for one very good reason: they “When a festive occasion our spirit unbends We should never forget the profession’s best friends. Those laypersons who make their own will, like the jolly testator, run the risk of having their wills interpreted in some manner other than as they intended or, equally unpleasant, of having the will declared invalid because it was not made in accordance with strict legal formality requirements. even if the Surrogate’s Court ultimately interprets an ambiguous provision in a will as the testator had intended, everyone involved has suffered unnecessarily (except the lawyers). Who finds joy in the time, anxiety and expense of a trial? Under such circumstances, the parties involved might have been better off if the testator had died intestate (i.e., without a will). At least then the property of the estate would be distributed to the next of kin in a clearly-defined order under the law. Of course, this distribution might not be as the testator intended. For example, if a man dies intestate leaving a wife and two children, his estate (except property owned jointly with his wife, which all becomes solely hers) is divided as follows: $50,000 plus one-half of the remainder to the wife; editor’s note: Joseph a. BLADE & BRANCH HINTS, TIPS & GREAT IDEAS FOR KEEPING YOUR PROPERTY BEAUTIFUL LET THIS BE THE YEAR YOUR LAWN GETS OFF TO A GREAT START! Depending on the age of your lawn, your soil, and how much shade you have, there’s a good chance you need more than just fertilizer and weed control to have any chance to Grow a Great Lawn! It’s not rocket science but it is horticultural science! Spring is a great time to improve your lawn. All lawns should get lime on a regular basis. Just like in a vegetable garden, to get the best tomatoes and cucumbers you must improve the soil... the same goes for your lawn. Lime increases the soil ph by sweetening the soil. This improves the soil structure and increases grass vigor and health. Core aeration is also beneficial to lawn health. Punching your lawn full of holes is one of the very best ways to improve your lawn. Regular aeration delivers multiple benefits, including: 1) relieving soil compaction, improving air, water and fertilizer penetration; 2) encouraging root growth for deeper and healthier roots; 3) breaking up and speeding up the decay of choking thatch. It’s good to schedule core aeration once a year – especially if your lawn has a heavy thatch layer (over one-half inch) or if your soil is heavy or compacted. You will see a dramatic improvement in thickness, heat and drought tolerance, and in the color of your lawn. Slice seeding or feed the birds! When your lawn really needs to be reseeded, slice seeding is usually the answer. These machines actually slice through the thatch layer getting “Good Seed to Soil” contact. Rather than spreading seed over the thatch layer, where it may not even sprout, or exposed to the elements or “hungry critters”, slice seeding provides superior germination rates and quicker lawn establishment. The timing of this service is very important. If you would like to see “Before and After”pictures or need more information, please go to our website or call us anytime! Should I Use Heat or Ice After an Injury? This is a common question brought up by patients and by all means an important one. Understanding the purpose of each along with their benefits makes this an easier question to answer. After an initial injury such as pulling a muscle, spraining your lower back or twisting your ankle the inflammatory stage of healing begins and lasts from 24-72 hours. It is during this initial stage that ice is preferred to reduce inflammation. Typically ice is applied in 10-20 minute intervals and removed for 10-20 minutes. This cycle is repeated as often as necessary. A common acronym used to remember what to do after an injury is P.R.I.C.E. (Protect, Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate the injury). Once the inflammatory stage is over, generally after 72 hours, heat is used to increase circulation and flexibility. Moist heat is preferred over dry heat (i.e. heating pad), because muscles have a high water content and the dry heat tends to dehydrate it, causing them to be less flexible and predisposing them to further injury. Heat is typically applied in the same manner as ice, in that it is applied for 20-30 minutes and removed for 20-30 minutes, also being repeated Member: • American Chiropractic Association • International Chiropractic Association • Council on Diagnostic Imaging as often as necessary. Healthy bones can help you stay strong and active throughout your life. If good bone health is achieved during childhood and maintained, it can help to avoid bone loss and fracture later in life. For healthy bones, it is important to maintain a physically active lifestyle and eat a balanced diet with plenty of calcium, vitamin D, and perhaps other supplements as needed. Physical therapists can design a unique program for you to help keep your bones healthy. Osteoporosis is a common bone disease that affects both men and women (mostly women), usually as they age. It is associated with low bone mass and thinning of the bone structure, making bones fragile and more likely to break. Some people are more at risk for osteoporosis than others. Not all risk factors can be changed, but healthy habits and a proper exercise routine designed by a physical therapist can keep bones healthy and reduce risk. Risk factors* include: • Age: More common in older individuals • Sex: More common in women • Family History: Heredity • Race and ethnicity: Affects all races. In the US, increased risk for Caucasian, Asian or Latino • Weight: Low body weight (small and thin) • Diet, especially one low in calcium and vitamin D • History of broken bones • Menopause • Inactive lifestyle • Smoking • Alcohol abuse • Certain medications, diseases, and other medical conditions Physical therapy can help prevent osteoporosis and treat its effects by designing individualized exercise programs to benefit bone health, improve posture, and enhance core stability and balance. The right exercises and good habits can keep bones strong and prevent or reverse the effects of osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, is an important way to build and maintain healthy bones. Muscle strengthening exercises have been found to stimulate bone growth and can help prevent and treat osteoporosis. These types of exercises are best if started early in life and done regularly. However, it is important to remember that you can begin exercising at any age and still reap great benefits. If you have osteoporosis, are at high risk for a fall or fracture, or have a medical condition, affecting your ability to exercise, do not begin an exercise program without first consulting your physician. Avoid exercises and daily activities, which round the spine, such as sit-ups, crunches, bending down to tie your shoes, exercise machines that involve forward bending of the trunk, and movements and sports that round and twist the spine. Benefits of Good Balance Preserving balance and stability with exercises can help reduce falls and resulting fractures. exercises that improve posture, core stability, balance and coordination, can also protect the spine against compression fractures. An individualized program may include a walking regimen, yoga and other exercises geared toward conditioning, balance and coordination. Bone Health Begins With Good Posture Physical therapists recommend good posture and safe movements to protect bones from fracture during daily activities. Using proper posture and safe body mechanics during all activities protects the spine against injury. Here are some tips: • Keep your back, stomach and leg muscles strong and flexible. • Keep your body in alignment, so it can be more efficient when you move. • Do not slouch. OUR TOWN • MAY 2013 – 92 – H E A L T H N O T E S Our Amazing Microbiota by pamela Browne Keane, r.ph. every day seems to bring new evidence of the role of the Microbiota in our health and well being. Recent articles in the new york times and the Wall Street Journal have both reported on research concerning the amino acid carnitine. This substance is most often found in red meat. While saturated fat and cholesterol have been blamed for the increased heart attack risk associated with red meat it appears that the culprit is carnitine. Not carnitine directly, but a chemical called TMAO which is made from carnitine by some species of bacteria found in our digestive tract. The researchers followed up on this observation by trying to identify if we all had this problematic bacteria or if it was somehow limited. What they found was that our diet played an important role in the composition of our personal micro- biota. Vegetarians who had no meat for one year prior to the test did not have a corresponding increase in TMAO in the blood. They ate the same amount of steak and had the same increase of carnitine in the gut yet they reacted differently by not having the increase in TMAO. The next step was to test this theory in a mouse model to see if the results could be duplicated. A group of mice were given broad spectrum antibiotics to kill all of the bacteria in their digestive tract and then were fed steak, lucky mice. When blood tests were done these mice had no increase in TMAO, thus proving the role of the certain bacteria in creating the high level of TMAO in our blood after a red meat meal. Maybe if the specific bacteria can be identified, along with identifying an effective antibiotic to kill it. Of course there is always a risk of bacterial resistance. Bocchichio The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located just in front of the ear on both sides of your head. This joint moves each time you bite down on something and whenever you talk or swallow. As a result pain in this joint can be quite frustrating and could last years if left untreated. The pain associated with the TMJ is often a result of displacement of the cartilage disc that causes pressure and stretching of the associated sensory nerves. The popping or clicking occurs as the disk snaps into place whenever the jaw moves. In addition, the chewing muscles may spasm causing pain and tenderness. Chiropractic may be one of the best ways to treat TMJ pain. It may take several visits but the re- sults are worth it. In conjunction with the care you receive from your chiropractor, you may want to try these self-remedies: • Avoid clenching or tensing your jaw. Do not chew gum. • Rest the muscles and joints by eating soft foods. • Relax muscles with moist heat (1/2 hour at least twice daily). • Talk to your dentist to determine whether a bite guard is indicated.
