Effective June 20, the alleys downtown have been converted to one-way. The East Alley is now northbound, while the West Alley is southbound. This is Phase 1 of the Alley Improvement Plan. The goal of the plan is to make the alleys more pedestrian-friendly. In Spring 2011, Phase 2 of the Alley Improvement Plan will bring stamped concrete walkways and plantings to the alleys to continue to enhance the pedestrian experience. All of these improvements are in preparation for the 2012 Main Street Reconstruction Project. For a preview of the Main Street Project, visit www.DowntownRochesterMI.com. See you downtown! 2 Kristi Trevarrow, Executive Director Rochester DDA Merchant Spotlight The Paul Green School of Rock Music–Interview with Carmen Paradise and Peter LeClair 415 Walnut Blvd • 248/726-9787 www.schoolofrock.com How long have you been in business? What unique experience do you provide for your customers? Locally we have been in business for 3 years, but we are part of a larger family of schools that started in Philadelphia in 1998. We are a performance based music school, so in short we offer our students a chance to learn a set of music and perform it in front of a live audience. We set up shows for our students at professional venues, hire professional lighting and sound, to give our students the closest experience to performing as a professional musician. Our main program is focused on kids ages 8-18, but we also offer classes for pre-schoolers and adults! Photo: Colleen Stormer Why did you choose Downtown Rochester to locate your business? Rochester is a growing community with a lot of young families. Having grown up in Rochester ourselves, Peter and I knew there were not very many places that catered to young people. It is nice to be able to offer young students a place to be themselves and to focus their energy on creativity by learning to play music as a band. What would you like your customers to remember about your business? That through rock and roll we teach our students lessons that are applicable in all aspects of life. In other words, we teach our students to rock on stage and in life! Please share one memorable experience you have had with your business. There are so many to choose from! Sometimes the smallest personal breakthrough, like gaining enough courage and self-confidence to finally sing during a rehearsal, becomes a huge memorable experience for a student! We have had students share a stage with Patti Smith, perform at The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, and at The 2010 Metrotimes Blowout. We create memorable experiences daily it seems. Why did you choose this type of business? We are musicians ourselves and craved such a place growing up. A lot of academic music programs seemed to be less focused on performance, which we know is a huge part of becoming a well-rounded musician. Potere-Modetz Funeral Home–Interview with John Modetz 339 Walnut Blvd • 248/651-8137 www.modetzfuneralhomes.com How long have you been in business? What would you like your customers to remember about your business? As a trade embalmer, the Potere Funeral Home was one of my accounts. Bill Potere mentioned on one of my visits that he was interested in the possibility of finding a new owner. Living in Farmington at the time with two small boys, I presented this great opportunity to my wife Mary. Without hesitation, the decision was made to pursue this endeavor. Being a part of a community means more than just being a business in it. If a community is to grow and prosper, we must continually be looking for ways to make a difference in the lives of all those around us. One project we are very proud of being involved with is the Adopt A Platoon. Because of the generous donations from our community in the way of food, personal items, books, notes, etc., we have been able to send over 2,000 boxes to the troops serving our country. Why did you choose Downtown Rochester to locate your business? After conversations with Bill and Leah Potere, we knew in our hearts Rochester would be a great community to raise our children in and that if we worked really hard we could continue to serve the community in a way that would tell them we were here to stay. In December of 1986, we became the Potere-Modetz Funeral Home and 24 years later we are proud to be the only family-owned funeral home in this community. Why did you choose this type of business? Please share one memorable experience you have had with your business. Many years ago while I attended my grandfather’s funeral in Illinois, I was impressed with the way the local funeral director took care of our family. What unique experience do you provide for your customers? Over the past 24 years, we have been blessed with many memorable experiences. However, the one that always brings a smile to our face is when a young couple who has experienced the loss of a baby stops into the funeral home to introduce us to their new healthy baby. These are the moments that make us proud to be a part of this wonderful community. When families choose the Potere-Modetz Funeral, we want them to know we truly care about them and are appreciative that they are entrusting their loved one to us. It is our sincere hope that anyone we serve will find we are here to help them through a very difficult time in their lives. 3 Rochester DDA Team Kristi Trevarrow, Executive Director [email protected] Nancy Voges, Marketing Coordinator [email protected] Stacey Keast, Events Coordinator [email protected] Sheila Harris, Business Development Assistant [email protected] DDA Board of Directors Michael Clayman, Chairman Cathy Daldin, Vice Chairman Mary Wilson, Secretary Dr. Atallah Jeffrey T.
