Five Acres Animal Shelter News Fall 2013 We want to thank you, our supporters, for 40 years! Five Acres was founded in 1973 by a small group of dedicated volunteers who saw a need in the community. Everything started with foster homes for animals in need of adoption, until 1988, when our first small shelter opened in St. Charles. In 1996 we acquired property at our current location that still has the original farmhouse and barn. The barn was renovated to house animals and offices, and the farmhouse still serves as our feline building. In 2012 we completed construction on a new 4,000 square foot canine building. Our goals for the future include a new feline building. During our 40 years, thousands of animals have been rescued and thousands of people impacted by those animals entering their lives. I want to share a story with you of just two rescues, Travis and Lacey. Travis was at the shelter in 1998. He was adopted into a loving home where he lived with Andrea for 15 years. It was heartwarming to hear her recall his adoption and know that he left the shelter and went on to live a long and happy life. She feels Travis was the best dog she ever had. Andrea soon realized there was no better way to honor Travis’s memory than to adopt another, passing on the home he loved so much. So, earlier this year, Andrea visited Five Acres again and took Lacey home. Five Acres was there for Travis in 1998, earlier this year for Lacey, and we’ll be here in the future for thousands more. Your support in our past, now, and in the future makes everything we do for the animals possible. The dogs, cats, and families that cherish them thank you most of all. We have a special campaign commemorating our 40 years. Four generous donors are matching your donations up to $4,000 over 40 days. Please send your tax-deductible contribution in the enclosed envelope and your gift will be doubled! Donors that give $100 or more may paint a special tile for our 40th Anniversary Wall. The tile can be a paw painting or a special message. Please mark on the enclosed envelope if you’d like the commemorative tile and include your phone number or email so we can contact you with the painting details. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Brown, Executive Director, at 636-949-9918 or [email protected]. A very special thank you to our matching donors: Mark and Jamie Buehrle, Margaret LaRue, Jackie Ordelheide, and Tom and Teri Seiler. We also have an exciting adoption promotion as part of our 40th Celebration (details on page 7)! 2012 Board of Directors Ruth Scheidegger, President Vic Lewitt, Vice President Caty Schaberg, Secretary Dave Barkey Wendy Box Kathy Caton Marianne Chanda Tom Huling Jan Lewien Dr. Ed Migneco Kris Pals Susan Peszat Deb Saulich Eric Wolff “To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting sentence or quote from the story here.” (left to right) Brittany, Kayla, Lisa, Donna, Shawnee, Mary, Nikki, and Rita Page 2 Five Acres Animal Shelter 2013 Advisory Board Members Five Acres is pleased and excited to share the launch of our new Advisory Board. Page 3 Fall 2013 2014 Five Acres Calendars Nature’s Variety has partnered with Five Acres to sponsor a calendar featuring our shelter animals. They are donating 100% of the proceeds to the shelter! The 2014 Transform a Life calendar features pets that are harder to place for various reasons from age to special medical conditions to breed. Nature’s Variety’s purpose is to empower people to transform the lives of pets. We think their company and employees are certainly living up to that! Pictured left are just some of the animals featured in the calendar. Each month features a special animal and tells a little about their story. Calendars are $20 each and can be purchased in our gift shop or online at www.fiveacresanimalshelter.org. Remember, 100% of your purchase will benefit the animals at Five Acres. Nature’s Variety is an independent company producing premium, natural pet food that is inspired by raw, providing dogs and cats with an instinctual diet. The company is headquartered in St. Louis and has manufacturing operations in Lincoln, Nebraska. Nature’s Variety produces food through the Instinct and Prairie brands, as well as frozen novelty treats through SweetSpots. A Note from the Director For over 40 years Five Acres has relied on generous volunteers and supporters. They truly make every dog and cat’s second chance possible. As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, it is a time to reflect on the many animals, as well as people, impacted over the years. We’re honored to be part of the bond so many have formed with a rescue. I know I speak for the staff and volunteers when I say the animals do more for us than we do for them. We care for an average of 115 dogs and cats each day at the shelter. As we grow and further our mission, our dependence on volunteers continues to grow. Daily, I’m amazed at their dedication and passion as well as the generosity of our donors. I want to thank everyone that has made a difference for the animals over the past four decades. Your support by adopting, donating, volunteering, and promoting the shelter has and will continue to make a big difference. Even the seemingly small differences made go on to make a large and lasting impact. On behalf of the animals, thank you! Kim Brown Volunteer Spotlight: Joan Swanston Joan has been volunteering for two and a half years. She spends most of her volunteer time helping out in the evenings with closing duties like dinner dishes, cleaning kennels, and walking dogs. This is a busy time each day, and she’s very helpful! Joan is also an active volunteer in our Shelter Buddy Program. This program pairs volunteers with dogs that have been at the shelter for a while. They provide extra attention, exercise, enrichment, and training opportunities. Joan also volunteers at mobile adoption events and has helped with the educational program. If any of these opportunities interest you, please email Brittany at Joan with former shelter buddy, [email protected]. Kiba. He’s since been adopted! Trails for Tails Walk and 5K Run Page 4 The event grows each year and this year Trails for Tails made over $25,000! With a 5K and 1 mile fun walk, as well as vendors, pet contests and games, it was a fun morning despite the rain! The Save-A-Life Team raised a total of $8,000 in pledges. Each animal rescued costs the shelter an average of $200 in medical care. Members of the Save-A-Life Team each raised over $200 in pledges, helping Five Acres save 40 more lives! (Pictured below is the Save-A-Life team. Pictured right is this year’s mascot, Bailey.) A big thank you to our sponsors! A big thank you to Petco, and we appreciate their continued support– proceeds last year totaled $2,000 for the shelter animals! This funding was raised through donations at the cash register, photos with Santa, and calendar sales. They will be selling calendars again this year for $10 and hosting photos with Santa. Calendar sales start Black Friday. Please check on our website or Facebook page as we get closer to the holidays for photos with Santa dates.
