Münster‘s places to go You’d certainly be missing out on something! Münster is a university town and it’s no coincidence that it’s famous for its night-life. Everyone can find something to suit their tastes here – from traditional Westphalian beer cuisine to the trendiest club. Kreativkai A visit to the Kreativkai, Münster’s place-to-go at the former harbour, is a must – and not only on warm summer evenings. Set in a combination of old harbour charm and exceptional new architecture, there is an exciting mix of art and culture, gastronomy and hip clubs waiting for visitors – all in stylish surroundings and right by the water. For some, it’s the perfect end to the day. For others, the beach with the palm trees is the starting point for an exciting night of clubbing. Hawerkamp If you don’t necessarily like things to be neat and tidy, take a look around this former industrial wasteland called “Hawerkamp”. Clubs, workshops, studios – here, between rusty railway tracks and concrete walls covered in graffiti, is where the alternative and hip-hop scenes have moved in. It is a place with cult status far beyond Münster, not least because of the annual Vainstream Rock Festival. Tips for the evening How about taking in a movie? The Cineplex has 9 screens, with all the current blockbusters. Lovers of art films will find an award-winning range in the Schlosstheater or the Programmkino Cinema. And from the hottest discos to live gigs by older heroes of the rock scene – there’s a lot on offer in the Jovel Music Hall. Or why not try the Hot Jazz Club? From Randy Brecker and Bill Evans to Brian Auger and John Lee Hooker, Jr. – they’ve all performed here. And Gleis 22 has repeatedly been voted Germany’s most popular club. For nightbirds There’s so much variety in Münster’s nightlife that there really is something for everyone: you can party and dance in the Kuhviertel Quarter and in the Old Town, drink a nice cold beer in the beer garden, eat excellent food and count the reflections of the stars in the water in a trendy restaurant down by the harbour or on the Aasee terraces. >> www.tourismus.muenster.de – Link: Shopping and Going OuT “Going out in Münster” Everything at a glance: a guide to going out and eating out in Münster, listing more than 700 places to go. Just two examples: Rüschhaus Along with the Residence, St. Clemenskirche (church) or the Erbdrostenhof, this pretty manor house is one of the masterpieces which the Baroque architect J.C. Schlaun built in Münster. Once a place where the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff sought refuge and worked, the house is today a museum dedicated to the poet. The French Baroque garden is also well worth seeing, and is open to the public all the time. Burg Hülshoff This, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff‘s birthplace, is located a little farther out towards Baumberge. One of the sleepy moated castles so typical of the Münsterland, it has been in the family’s possession since the 15th century. Parts of the castle house a Droste Museum, and the wide open gardens contain a wildlife enclosure and a garden island inviting visitors to take a walk. Guests can relax in the café restaurant in the castle. The overall route can easily be divided up into four smaller routes or into daily tours. And if you’d like to follow in the footsteps of the men who forged the Peace of Westphalia, the “Peace Route” connects the historic Town Halls in Münster and Osnabrück, where the peace treaties were signed.
