President’s Letter
Dear Mercy Community,
It is with gratitude and pride that I share with you the 2011-2012 Mercy
High School Annual Report. As a new member of our Mercy Community
here in Burlingame, I am awed by the dedication and generosity of
Mercy’s alumnae, parents and benefactors. Together you have made it
possible for us to provide our students an education characterized by
scholarship and service, compassion and community, faith and fun.
Through your gifts of time, talent and treasure you made many things possible during the
last year. The leadership of Ms. Laura Held and the outgoing board enabled us to renovate
our classrooms and move into the realm of technologically enhanced instruction. Conscious
of the financial challenges all families experience during this time, we were able to distribute
over $587,524 in financial assistance to families whose resources are limited. Significantly, we
have been able to expand our student support services in the coming year in order to help all
students more fully realize their full potential.
None of this would be possible without you. The Mercy tradition has always strived to
connect those with resources to those who were in need. It is a tradition of partnership in
building a world where all can grow and thrive. You are such an important part of that tradition.
Your commitment to Mercy, its students and its mission is what helps make our school such a

his past year was a year of many accomplishments and
developments that hold great promise for our future. Mercy’s
financial health remains strong and we are committed to
safeguarding the strength of our educational programs. We continue to
see an increase in the need for financial assistance and this will be an
ongoing challenge. Your support is more important than ever.
We continually strive to offer an educational program committed to
excellence that will prepare our girls for life in the 21st Century. By building upon our existing
programs and developing new initiatives, we foster opportunities for our students to grow in faith
and leadership, and into the young woman that God has called them to be. The development of
the whole person – mind, body and soul, remains the heart of a Mercy education.

Making A Difference
Making A Difference is our most important fundraising effort of the year, raising over
$178,000 this year. Financial aid for our students is our greatest need and ensures
a continued strong enrollment. With costs over $18,000 per year, more and more
families need financial aid in order to have their daughters attend Mercy. This year
more than 25% of our student body will receive financial assistance ranging from
$2,000 to full-tuition through your support and other sponsorships.
Keynote speaker Cindy Urquidez ’94 and student speaker Patricia De Luca ’12
touched the hearts of each person at this year’s Making A Difference luncheon. Each
shared the profound impact Mercy has had on their life and the gratitude they hold
for how Mercy has shaped them into the women they are today. Patty, diagnosed with
a severe speech impediment as a child, spoke of the challenges she has faced, how
she overcame these challenges and the gratitude she has for her Mercy experience.
Patty ended her speech with these words “So how do I show gratitude for the best
gift that I have ever received, outside of my loving parents and my adored brother?
How do I thank someone for changing my life when those who helped create my little
miracle are anonymous? I realized the only way was to take the gift I have been given
and just run with it. For me to take the blessings I have been given in life and push
myself to make a difference in this world, and hopefully in young ladies like myself,
will be my best thank you. You - each of you, have helped me find my voice that is the
best gift I have ever received and so I chose to use my clear, confident, appreciative

Circle of Mercy
The Circle of Mercy honors those donors who have shared in our mission through an
annual leadership gift of $1,500 or more to the school. Mercy counts on these leadership
gifts to provide many enhancements to our programs & campus. These leadership donors

Catherine McAuley Award
Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy said, “No work of charity can
be more productive of good to society than the careful instruction of women.”
The Catherine McAuley Award is presented to a person or group who represents a
commitment to Catherine McAuley’s vision & the education of young women. Through
their support, the recipients of this award have enabled us to prepare our students to
be women of faith, influence & compassionate service. The young women at Mercy
today are our future; the recipients of this award have joined with Mercy in educating
young women not only for success in college but for life. This year Mercy proudly
acknowledged Norbert & Inger Bischofberger, George & Jane Caughman, Don & Debby
Ciucci and Robert & Jackie O’Donnell.

From the first day Irene Bischofberger ‘11 stepped into the halls of Mercy High School, her
parents, Norbert & Inger showed their generosity to Mercy with our largest ever Parent
Pledge of $50,000. Their total giving continued with donations of over $250,000 to our
Parent Pledge Program, Events and Making A Difference program for financial assistance,
which has benefitted many girls.
When asked what was most impactful about Irene’s experience at Mercy, Inger stated that
in addition to an excellent education, Irene developed strong, solid & sincere friendships.
She believes the all-girl environment helped to promote this unique sense of camaraderie
& that these friendships are the “gift” that Mercy gives its students. Through Norbert and
Inger’s generosity, many girls have been given the financial assistance they need to attend
Mercy. They are truly an example of a couple who live out Catherine McAuley’s vision of
educating young women through their dedication and support of Mercy High School.

In recent years the Mercy High School Community has lost three beloved members
of our family; Moira O’Donnell, Class of 1990, Cindy Caughman Corona, Class of 1992
and Angelina Ciucci, Class of 1999. These three women were stars, they were women
of faith, they demonstrated strength in academics, they were leaders of the student
body and outside community, they were young women who supported and inspired
their classmates, and they were known for their compassionate service to those less
fortunate. These three women grew up in Pacifica as friends and neighbors and their
families are intertwined by more than three decades of friendship.
At this year’s Circle of Mercy, we were pleased to honor their parents, Robert and
Jackie O’Donnell, George and Jane Caughman and Don and Debby Ciucci for the
establishment of The “Spirit of Mercy Memorial Scholarship in Memory of Moira, Cindy
and Angie.” This scholarship is awarded annually to a junior student who exemplifies
the Mercy Spirit and the values which guided Moira, Cindy and Angie’s lives: faith,
love, courage, compassion, generosity, social justice and a joy for life.

These three couples have dedicated years of service to Mercy High School. Bob
and George served on our Board of Directors, the Caughman’s and O’Donnell’s as
Presidents of our Mercy Parent Club; and all three couples were active in all aspects of
parent and student life at Mercy. Their generosity of spirit, commitment to the values
and vision of the Sisters of Mercy and Catherine McAuley are truly an example to us
all. Sadly, in December 2011, we lost our dear friend Jane who was truly an inspiration
to us all.

A named scholarship or endowment fund may be established in memory or honor of a
particular person or persons. Over the years many named funds have been established & we
are grateful to the vision & commitment of these donors. To establish a named endowment
or scholarship fund, the donor or family must make a commitment of at least $10,000. This

M erc y ’ s G ot Talent
Auction 2012
200 guests were “wowed” at Mercy’s Got Talent, the annual auction and dinner on
Saturday March 3. The event, sponsored by the Mercy Parents’ Club, was filled with
live entertainment, fantastic Silent & Live Auction items & fast & furious bidding!
Throughout the evening, student performances were featured on three stages.
dancers, singers and actors captivated the audience. In addition, many pieces of
student art work including ceramics, photographs and paintings were showcased
in the auction and resulted in hot bidding wars! Our 10 items in the Live Auction
brought in over $37,000, our Fund-A-Need, to raise money for the renovation of
wing classrooms, raised money for the renovation of Wing classrooms raised almost
$10,000 and the Silent Auction brought in over $22,000!
A HUGE THANK YOU to all of the parents who made the auction such an amazing
success! So many people volunteered endless hours over the six months leading up
to event — we couldn’t have done it without you! There are so many people to thank,
but in particular our gratitude goes out to Caroline Romeo, our Auction Chair, for
overseeing this event with panache!

As a result of fundraising efforts throughout the
year (Wine Tasting, Casino del Kohl, Auction,

$5,000 going toward scholarships and $3,000
toward Athletics. This was the net gain after
MPC, at no cost to families, hosted: the Mother
Daughter Tea for 600 people, the Father
Daughter Dance for 250 people, the President’s
Welcome BBQ for 300 people as well as the
Senior Mother Daughter Mass & Brunch for

Grants
The Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation
Mercy High School received a $50,000 grant from The Carl and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation
for tuition assistance. The goal of the Foundation is to promote religious, scientific, literary
and educational purposes. The Foundation has provided support to Mercy annually for over
21 years.
The Drum Foundation
This year, The Drum Foundation provided $12,500 in grants to Mercy High School for our
tuition assistance program. The Drum Foundation Giving provides aid to Roman Catholic
Church-related educational and charitable organizations, usually limited to the Archdiocese of
San Francisco, including those supported by Mr. Drum during his lifetime.
The David B. and Edward C. Goodstein Foundation
The Goodstein Foundation provided a $3,000 scholarship toward one, preselected, student’s
tuition and will follow this student all four years. The Goodstein Foundation focuses their
giving on the arts, Christian agencies and churches, education and youth development.
This year, 36 Mercy families received $52,500 in financial aid from the Archdiocese of
San Francisco.
The Daughters of Charity Foundation sponsored three students at Mercy High School this year
covering their full tuition as well as some additional expenses for one of the students. Their
generous tuition grant for 2011-2012 totaled $51,768.
I Have A Dream, East Palo Alto
I Have A Dream, East Palo Alto Chapter, sponsored two “Dreamers” who were sophomores
at Mercy this year providing tuition assistance in the amount of $16,984. I Have A Dream is
a unique organization that motivates and empowers youth from low-income areas to reach
their educational, personal and career goals by providing a long-term program for mentoring,
tutoring and enrichment.
Trust Funds Incorporated provided a $5,000 grant for tuition assistance. Trust Funds provides
grants for Roman Catholic, educational, religious and social service charitable organizations.

Partners in Mission
Mercy’s Annual Giving Program provides the opportunity for our entire Mercy Community
to partner with us as we advance the mission of Mercy High School. Our Annual Giving
program provides sustainable revenue & long-term support for our programs & has an
immediate impact on the young women at Mercy. The Annual Giving revenues are used to
enhance student curricular & co-curricular programs as well as provide support for specific
programs as designated by donors such as tuition assistance, academic departments,
athletics, Mercy Mass, endowment, named scholarships & other special projects. Gifts
include not only cash donations but stock transfers, planned gifts & bequests.
Mercy’s Annual Giving Program ensures we are continuing a legacy of high achievement
both in & out of the classroom & a strong financial foundation not only for today but for
the future. Each of these donors is truly a “partner in mission” with Mercy High School.

honored is enrolled in our mass book which is placed on the altar at our student body masses during
the year. There is no specific contribution amount requested for participation.

Catherine’s Legacy
More than ten years ago, Mercy High School founded “Catherine’s
Legacy” in order to honor those donors, who have named Mercy
High School Burlingame as a beneficiary of their estate plan, for their
vision and generosity. The wonderful thing about planned giving is
that it can greatly benefit you and your loved ones, while also helping
others-in this case, the students at Mercy High School Burlingame.
Regardless of income level or age, anyone can make a huge impact on Mercy’s future
by establishing a planned gift.
Individuals or foundations are eligible for membership in Catherine’s Legacy if they have
made Mercy a beneficiary in their will, retirement plan, IRA or life insurance policy, or if a
planned gift was established to benefit Mercy. If you qualify for membership, but are not
yet listed as a member on our records, please let us know.
