Welcome to Brewster...
…from the Brewster Chamber of Commerce! Brewster is known as Cape Cod’s
“Sea Captain’s Town” and the vibrant business community reflects the entrepreneurial
spirit of our seafaring forefathers.
In the late 1600’s business in Brewster grew to meet the needs of the sea captains and their
families. The grist mill was at the center of commerce. A fulling mill, where wool fabric was
pre-shrunk, a carding mill, and shops offering dry goods, provided local jobs and a place to
sell goods brought in by ship.
Today, Brewster’s businesses continue to meet the needs of those who live and visit here,
providing a full array of goods and services, and culture and recreation. Sea captains’ homes
are now elegant inns and gourmet restaurants; fine art and antiques galleries; specialty gift
shops; and professional offices, museums and theatres.
And with over 3,000 acres of conservation lands; 15 fresh-water ponds; the Cape Cod Rail
Trail; and 7 public beaches along Cape Cod Bay there is recreation of all kinds to please everyone.
We invite you to Explore Brewster!
Discover the charm of our community and why it became
Cape Cod’s Sea Captains favorite town.

public enjoyment. The Windmill is a fascinating opportunity for young and old to see
how Brewster’s early settlers harnessed one
of the area’s few available energy sources to
process their farm corn into meal. Volunteer
“millers” will explain how the building’s
huge arms are able to convert the wind’s
force through wooden gears into power to
drive the massive millstones. Although the
mill is a relatively primitive but ingenious
design dating back to the 1500’s in England,
the actual operation was not easy to control
and depended on a skilled miller with a feel
for the wind and rotating parts. The Harris
Black House, located next to the Windmill,
is one of the last surviving small post and
beam houses that were frequently used on
the Cape by early settlers. The one-story
structure measures fifteen feet to the rooftop
and sixteen feet square, and is the same
dimensions as English cottages of the 1600’s.
It is appointed with furniture and cooking
tools from the period. The house is a single
room with tiny pantry and a sleeping loft,
and was once home to Nathan Black’s family
of 13. Children are amazed at the contrast
between life today and how an entire family
could live, work, cook, eat, play and sleep in
this little house 200 years ago.

The Brewster Historical Society has three
buildings in two locations. The Historical
Society Museum is located on Route 6A, 3171
Main St., just east of the Cape Cod Sea Camps,
and is open 1-4 p.m., Thurs. – Sat., midJuly to mid-Sept. 508-896-9521. As with the
other two Society buildings, admission is free,
and docents are available to describe the
exhibits and bring the past back to life!
The Museum houses four permanent galleries and a special exhibits gallery, plus an
extensive documents research area that is
accessible by appointment in the off-season.
Featured in the permanent galleries are marine
objects and paintings, China trade goods and
other furnishings handed down through generations of descendants from noted Brewster
ship captains. Also, the contents of an old
Brewster barbershop, post office, significant
pieces of antique furniture, family paintings
and folk art are housed in the museum. The
special exhibits gallery changes each summer
allowing the Society’s photographic, textile
and artifact collections to be rotated out of
storage. A replica of the historic Dillingham
House is also on display.
The Higgins Farm Windmill and the Harris
Black House are located on the ground of
Drummer Boy Park, 773 Main St., West
Brewster. These are wonderful restorations of

The Museum offers visitors of all ages
interpretive exhibits that celebrate the natural
history of Cape Cod. The Museum was
founded in 1954, with a mission to encourage and advance understanding of our natural
environment through discovery and learning.

The Museum is
housed in a 17,000
square-foot building
surrounded by 400
acres of conservation
land, with scenic
walking trails across
salt marsh and out
to beautiful Wing
Island and the bay. There are two floors of
exhibits, an aquarium, large nature library, and
a Museum shop full of great gifts, tee shirts,
jewelry, books and educational and naturerelated toys and games. Lectures and workshops
on natural history topics are also offered
year-round, and with special programs for
children.
Interactive displays of Cape coastal change,
whale and dolphin specimens, collections of
carved and mounted birds, and rotating art
exhibits are among the presentations at the
Museum. The Museum also has aquatic tanks
with fresh and saltwater habitats and tidal pool,
displaying over 65 native marine animals.
The Clarence Hay Library houses a large
collection of natural history books, magazines,
videos and DVDs. Known for popular programs such as KidSummer and Mudflat
Mania, lecture series by renowned scientists,
credited courses on regional marine topics
and special family events, the Museum is
truly a Cape Cod treasure.
The Museum grounds contain three
walking trails that are open year-round for
self-guided exploration and in the summer
with experienced trail guides. The John
Wing Trail, owned by the Town of Brewster,
passes through 1.3 mile of salt marsh, upland
forest, dune and beach habitats. The Lee
Baldwin South Trail begins on the south
side of Rte. 6A and passes through .75 mile
of brackish salt marsh and beech forest. A
.75 mile spur trail follows the eastern edge
of Stony Brook. The North Trail, a short .25
loop, is ideal for families with young children,
offering views of the salt marsh, Paine’s Creek
and cultivated and
non-cultivated wildflower areas.
Crosby Mansion
Off Main St. (Rte. 6A) on Crosby Lane in
East Brewster. The elegant grounds are open
to the public for walking all summer, and the
mansion is open with guided tours during one of four open houses: July 4 and 18,
and Aug. 1 and 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The mansion overlooks Cape Cod Bay, with
architecture featuring a fanciful collection of
turrets, towers and columns. Built in 1887 by
entrepreneur Albert Crosby, the building
is full of wonderful details inside and out. It’s
interesting to note that the mansion was actually
built around Mr. Crosby’s grandparents’
original Cape Cod homestead, and a small
door inside connects the two buildings. For
more information,
call 508-896-1744.
Stony Brook
Grist Mill
& Museum
Herring Run
The intersection
of Satucket & Stony
Brook Roads is a
favorite place for
local residents as
well as visitors. It is a location of great
natural and historical interest, featuring a
picturesque mill beside a sparkling stream.
Footpaths on both sides of the road meander
along the edge of Stony Brook. Informative
signs provide details about the area’s rich
history.
The Grist Mill, beside Stony Brook, is a
quiet reminder that this location was a busy
19th Century industrial area. The Factory
Village produced goods such as shoes, furniture and fabric. The present Grist Mill was
built in 1873 on the foundation of an old
fulling and woolen mill. Water flowing over
9
the water wheel creates power to grind corn
between giant millstones. The town bought
the mill and surrounding area in 1940.
After recent years of refurbishment the
museum is open and the mill is grinding
corn again. Open Sat 10am-2pm, late JuneAugust. Take home some corn meal to make
fresh corn muffins!
Brewster’s harbinger of spring is the news
that “The herring are running!” From midApril through early May (depending on air
and water temperatures), hordes of herring
migrate up Stony Brook from the salt water
of Cape Cod Bay to spawn in the pond waters
of West Brewster,. The Herring Run’s paths
are a great place to observe the alewives’ aweinspiring journey up the fish ladders. The Run
is considered a Cape Cod classic. Picnic Table.
Cape Cod Rail Trail
Walk, run, bike or rollerblade
along 25 miles of scenic paved
paths where train tracks once
carried passengers and supplies to local
Cape Cod destinations. The trail stretches from Dennis to Wellfleet, winding
past Brewster’s forests, cranberry bogs and
ponds. In East Brewster, the trail intersects
with an additional eight miles of bike trails
in Nickerson State Park.
There are numerous places to get on the
trail; the intersection of Route 137 and
Underpass Road features a parking area and
convenient accesss. Explore the Rail Trail
Extension through Harwich to Chatham,
ending at Depot Road.
Public Tennis, Basketball,
Soccer/Baseball Fields
There are six public courts located behind
the Fire & Rescue Station. Park behind the
Council on Aging, 1673 Main St., and walk
behind the Fire Station.
Weekday summer mornings until 12:00pm,
the Tennis Courts are reserved for Brewster
Recreation Programs. During the summer
10
months, courts will be open to the public for
no charge after 12:00 pm. For more information on Youth &Adult Tennis Programs,

Drummer Boy Park
773 Main Street, West
Brewster is home to
Brewster’s Bandstand
and Playground. The site
offers a spectacular view
from Route 6A, across Quivet Creek to Cape
Cod Bay. On Sunday evenings at 6 pm in July
and August bring a picnic and lawn blanket
and enjoy the music of The Brewster Band.
Two 18th Century buildings of historical
interest - Old Higgins Farm Windmill and
the Harris Black House - are situated nearby.
Nickerson State Park
3488 Main St., 508-896-3491. An ideal
place for a family outing, camping, hiking,
biking, swimming, or boating. Encompassing
more than 1,955 acres and eight freshwater
ponds, the park has nature trails, 8 miles of
paved paths, picnic sites, three stocked yearround ponds, and boat launches for motorboats (10 HP limit), sailboats,
canoes and kayaks. Nickerson
offers 420 seasonal campsites
situated around the ponds and in
the woods. Resevations only through 877-4226762 or www.reserveamerica.com. All campsites reserved in advance. Last minute sites
may become available only by chance. Trail
maps available on chamber website.
Punkhorn Parklands
Over 800 acres of conservation land with
wooded trails that pass by lakes,
ponds and marshes. Begins at the
end of paved Run Hill Rd. There
are miles of great trails, so wear
your hiking boots. General maps sold at
Town Hall. The latest trail maps available
for the Boot Swamp Trail, Calf Field Pond,
and Eagle Point sections of the Punkhorn
Parklands are printable from your home
computer www.town.brewster.ma.us Follow
the color-coded trails.
Dogs
No dogs on Brewster beaches from June
1-October 1. After October 1, dogs must
be on leashes and waste picked up. In the
summer two nearby beaches of the National
Seashore will welcome your dog (on leash,
with drinking water & your watchful eye)—
In Eastham, Nauset Lighthouse Beach and
in Wellfleet, Marconi Beach. Walking your
dog inNickerson State Park is ideal with the
shaded paved and off road paths. There is a
Cape-wide leash law.
