Combining superb image quality and fast, dependable operation, these cameras underline Canon's commitment to providing professional photographers with the very finest tools for their work. With access to more than 50 EF lenses and a complete range of accessories, the EOS system is today’s most advanced photographic system and is ready to be compatible with whatever tomorrow brings. Complemented by market leading photo printers and projectors – all designed with the professional in mind – Canon offers the working photographer uncompromising quality from shoot through to output. Canon is continuously refining its products based on the feedback of professional photographers in the field. It is their advice that will drive the EOS evolution for decades to come. Resolution is just the beginning. The EOS-1Ds Mark II delivers image quality on a grand scale. Its full frame 16.7 Megapixel CMOS sensor produces files that meet the exacting standards of leading international photo agencies and stock libraries. For Photographers. By Photographers. The essential tool of the professional news and sports photographer, the EOS-1D Mark II N represents the ultimate in responsive D-SLR photography: near-instant 0.2 second start up, rapid 45-point AF and 8.5 fps continuous shooting for up to 48 JPEG frames in one burst. Canon’s DIGIC II Image Processor works at the core of every digital EOS camera, driving fast start-up, rapid camera performance and the superb image quality that EOS is renowned for. DIGIC II has been specifically designed to perform the high-speed calculations necessary for exceptionally accurate colour reproduction in real time. With 16.7 Megapixels at 4 fps for a maximum burst of 32 images, the EOS-1Ds Mark II's DIGIC II processor manages to render more than half a gigabyte of data in just 8 seconds. DIGIC II operates efficiently so photographers can shoot for longer on a single charge: up to 1,200 shots for both the EOS-1Ds Mark II and EOS-1D Mark II N under normal conditions. White Balance Controls. The sophisticated image processing algorithm of DIGIC II delivers extremely stable white balance (WB) under every lighting condition. All three cameras have nine white © Nikki Hill, UK “ balance modes with each colour correctable by ±9 levels in single level increments. The successor to the EOS-1D Mark II, the EOS-1D Mark II N refines every facet of the photographic process, resulting in a faster, more fluid experience for the photographer. With a start-up time of just 0.2 seconds, this camera excels in environments where speed of response is crucial. 8.5 fps, 48-frame continuous burst performance (22 in RAW) means that action and sports photographers need never miss a shot. Separate CF and SD memory card slots allow for dual recording of JPEG and RAW images, providing added cover on critical assignments. The camera retains the EOS-1D Mark II’s 8.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor, rapid 45-point AF, and precise 21-zone evaluative metering. Based on feedback from professional photographers, the EOS-1D Mark II N incorporates a range of improvements, such as a larger 2.5 inch LCD screen with a 170° angle of view for easier image playback. ISO values can be viewed in the viewfinder while they are being changed, allowing photographers to concentrate on the scene at hand. “ © Shaun Botterill/Getty Images, UK The EOS-1D Mark II N is extremely flexible when working with poor light, Shaun Botterill 9 ” which is crucial for sports photography. The EOS-1D Mark II N and EOS 5D are fully customisable to a photographer’s personal style of shooting. Six Picture Style parameters simulate the characteristics of different film styles, including Standard, for punchy, print-ready colour; Portrait, for softer, natural skin tones; and Landscape, for sharp images with vivid blues and greens. Neutral and Faithful settings reproduce colours naturally with no sharpness applied - ideal for images that are to undergo post-processing. A Monochrome setting allows photographers to emulate colour filters with black and white film. All settings can be adjusted for colour tone, saturation, sharpness and contrast, and up to three custom Picture Style parameters can be saved for later use. With more than 48,000 possible setting combinations available, Picture Style offers photographers unprecedented image control direct from the camera. The EOS 5D offers photographers a compact, robust digital SLR that's lightweight enough to carry on the most gruelling of shoots. The camera's 12.8 Megapixel CMOS sensor measures 35.8 x 23.9mm – known as 'full frame' for the dimensions it shares with traditional 35mm film. With no lens conversion factor, photographers can realise the full potential of Canon’s EF lenses capturing more light, achieving wider angles of view and gaining tighter control over depth of field. The sensor is only one element of the EOS 5D's appeal. Its 9-point AF system includes 6 Assist AF points for highly accurate focus tracking. A 3.5% spot metering circle gives photographers flexible control over exposure, while customisable Picture Styles provide quick access to image processing parameters. Two automatic noise reduction settings maximise the effectiveness of the camera's on-chip noise reduction, for uncompromising performance from ISO 50 right through to ISO 3200 (equivalent). “ © Alexandra Boulat/VII, France For photojournalism, one of the most important things ” about the EOS 5D is its size. I’ve been through the entire Canon digital range since the very beginning and have witnessed a dramatic evolution. With digital there has always been two systems – a high-quality system and a high-speed system. That Canon has managed to integrate the two is just superb. © Helen Atkinson, UK 15 16 The EF Lens Range Aspherical Elements Spherical aberration occurs when light rays coming through the centre of the lens do not align with the light rays coming through the lens edge. Since there is no sharp point of focus, images look soft and lack contrast. Canon's aspherical lens elements change the curvature from centre to edge to align incoming light rays so that the entire image plane appears sharply focused. Image Stabilizer Canon’s Image Stabilizer (IS) technology makes handheld photography possible in low-light situations or when shooting from a moving platform. IS lenses include a special group of lens elements which automatically shift position to compensate for camera shake. This compensatory effect adds the equivalent of up to three stops of exposure, expanding a photographer's handheld options dramatically. Ultrasonic Motor (USM) The world's first lens-based motor that harnesses ultrasonic oscillation energy to drive virtually silent auto focus, which on some lenses is literally faster than the human eye. The USM stops the moment focus is achieved, without overshooting. © Greg Basco, USA Every EOS digital SLR camera is backed up by the EF lens series, the world's most comprehensive system of interchangeable lenses – more than 50 models, ranging from 14mm extreme wide angle to 600mm super telephoto. Diffractive Optics Diffractive Optical (DO) lenses represent a new level in professional telephoto lenses. Macro Lenses Canon’s EF lens line-up includes a number of options for true close-up and macro photography. Allowing photographers to bring tiny objects into life-sized view, these lenses are optically designed to provide even colour reproduction and sharpness throughout the frame. Tilt and Shift Lenses Tilt and Shift lenses bring many of the advantages of technical view cameras to the EOS system. Tilt movements alter the angle of the plane of focus between the lens and CMOS sensor, making broad depth of field possible even at large apertures. Shift movements move the lens’ optical axis in parallel, allowing photographers to correct the perspective distortion that typically occurs with architectural photography. 17 For more information on the EF lens range, visit our website. 18 E-TTL II: Smarter Flash Performance Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX • Attaches to all Canon EF Macro lenses (EF 180mm f/3.5L requires Macro Lite Adapter 72C). • Twin flash heads can be rotated over 80° angle around lens in 5° increments. • Heads can be swivelled, bounced or removed from mounting ring for added control. • Powerful Guide Number of 24 (m/ISO 100). • Advanced features including FEL, Hi-speed sync, and FEB. • Full E-TTL II automatic flash control with EOS-1Ds Mark II, 1D Mark II N and 5D. • Incandescent focusing lamps and two different types of 1 second modelling flash allow easy focusing and previewing of lighting effects.
