No small feat.” Artnet, United States, March 19, 2014 “As art fairs go, it is the most intellectually stimulating because the combination of art and thinkers is different from any you find in the West. You see and hear something new.” “Since its inception in 2007, Art Dubai has consistently gained power, maturity and originality. It has continually gained quality. Art Dubai has always been more than an art fair, it’s a reflection of current affairs.” Die Welt, Germany, March 22, 2014 “As Dubai has grown – its airlines now fly to 239 destinations and its ports handled 13.6 million standard shipping containers last year – people in the business of culture also see it increasingly as a go-to meeting point between Africa, Asia and other parts of the Middle East.” The Wall Street Journal, United States March 19, 2014 ART DUBAI Review 2014 12 “Tight, fine-tuned curatorial and educational scope is at the core of Art Dubai’s mantra. In many respects, labeling it as an art fair may be limiting as the array of new and returning activities lend the fair the positioning as a festival for visual arts.” Canvas, UAE, March/April 2014 “À quoi reconnaît-on la maturité d’Art Dubai ? À sa capacité à se dérober aux clichés.” “How do we recognise the maturity of Art Dubai? Our extensive yearround educational programming is run in partnership with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority; and we welcomed Mashreq Private Banking as sponsor of Art Dubai Modern. Art Dubai 2014 was the largest and most global edition of the fair to date: we welcomed 85 galleries and artspaces from 34 countries to the fair, presenting booth exhibitions across three distinct gallery programmes. Together, the galleries featured the work of more than 500 artists from every corner of the world. 19 ART DUBAI Review 2014 the Contemporary and Marker gallery programmes and provided a unique, curated, and enthusiastically-received outing for masters from the Middle East and South Asia. 70 museum groups and more than 400 curators and museum representatives attended the fair, confirming Art Dubai’s role as the meeting point in the Middle East and South Asia, and the global fair of choice for the art world. The Jumeirah Patrons Preview on March 18 and the fair’s Opening on March 19 attracted capacity crowds—and the buzz continued all-week-long, with over 25,000 visitors taking in the gallery halls, talks programmes, artists’ projects and a packed schedule of family events, educational initiatives, tours, presentations and launches. Art Dubai now has the most extensive notfor-profit programme of any fair, worldwide. Our role as a ‘fair of discovery’ is exemplified by Marker, the curated, themed section of artspaces, which, in 2014, focused on the Caucasus and Central Asia. The Global Art Forum, the most innovative and significant of talks programmes, runs over five days in two cities, with more than 40 contributors. The dynamic programming and distinct curatorial stance of Art Dubai Projects, Film and Radio highlight the work of upcoming artists from the region and beyond. The fair also saw its highest-ever levels of attendance from universities and colleges, welcoming more than 500 UAE and GCC-based students on specially organised tours. Art Dubai 2014 included the launch of a third gallery hall (Art Dubai Modern), to complement Art Dubai both illustrates and acts as a catalyst in the ever-growing and deepening international interest in the arts scenes of the Middle East; the fair is now recognised as the crucial cultural hub linking Africa, the Arab world and Asia. Dubai has been a trading post and meeting point for South Asia, Iran, the Arab world and Africa for hundreds of years. Sharjah, with its major biennial, is established as a place of heritage and art production, and Doha and Abu Dhabi host major museums. Over the past decade, Dubai has become the region’s commercial art centre—home to over 40 galleries—and a city for the exchange and production of ideas, of entrepreneurship, of debate. In 2007, when Art Dubai was founded, the prevailing rhetoric was one of exchange between East and West. Now, more than a decade after 9/11, the zeitgeist has taken a palpable shift towards more nuanced relationships built along trade routes and webs of communication; Dubai has emerged as a global hub and a gateway to both east and west Asia, not only for business and travel, but also in terms of contemporary art and culture. At Art Dubai we find ourselves increasingly invested in the complex weave that connects the East with the East and the South with the South—providing a point of connection for all those institutions and individuals in Europe and America who are seeking to engage with an art world that is resolutely global. We pride ourselves on placing outreach and collaboration at the heart of the fair, working in partnership with institutions across the UAE year-round. ART DUBAI Review 2014 24 “[Art Dubai’s] multiple faces are what make it interesting. The fact that it is spawning an arts scene throughout the city shows it is growing roots. And it already has the ingredients to ensure people keep coming…The spirit of the fair is taking over the city. Performers entertain at Galleries Night in Al Quoz, the industrial zone behind Dubai’s main thoroughfare, and around the financial centre; Christie’s auctions artworks at the Emirates Towers hotel; I learn Arabic Kufic stencilling in the artisanal Bastakiya neighbourhood; Najla Said performs at a Palestinian culture week near Meydan racetrack; Van Cleef & Arpels holds jewellery workshops at the Design Days fair; crowds flock to attend Art Dubai’s Global Art Forum discussions.” The Financial Times, United Kingdom, March 20, 2014 “The fair has in many ways acted as a catalyst in boosting activity and interest in the local art scene overall, with parts of the city now given over to regular art walks and other art-centric events." South China Morning Post, Hong Kong, March 16, 2014 25 ART DUBAI Review 2014 ART week With the aim of promoting the cultural activities of the region to both residents and visitors, Art Week is an umbrella initiative bringing together the UAE’s arts and culturecentred happenings in the month of March. From fairs Art Dubai, Design Days Dubai and SIKKA to exhibitions at Alserkal Avenue and pop-up projects around the country, Art Week involves cultural programmes from across the UAE, highlighting galleries, institutions and artists. As a focal point of the region’s cultural calendar, Art Week helps sustain and develop the region’s arts industry by actively building audiences and patrons. With a print run of 25,000 copies, the Art Week Guide promotes the arts and culture scenes of the UAE and, in 2014, contained information on more than one hundred cultural events. Art Dubai and other events during Art Week sit within the wider Art Season, an initiative by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority to highlight the city’s growing creative landscape. artdubai.ae/art-week ART DUBAI Review 2014 Galleries 26 27 ART DUBAI Review 2014 ART DUBAI Review 2014 28 «حققت الدورة الثامنة من معرض «آرت دبي» التي أقيمت خالل والتي، مارس في مدينة الجميرا وميناء السالم22 – 19 الفترة من ً ً ً قياسيا نجاحا ،بلدا 34 فنان من500 صالة عرض و85 شارك فيها ً واسعا على صعيد الزوار المحليين وإقباال ،على صعيد المبيعات ً ومن الخارج الذين كانوا يلتقطون صور األعمال التي تروق لهم ».ليرسلوها عبر وسائل االتصال المجتمعية إلى األصدقاء 2014 مارس23 ، اإلمارات العربية المتحدة،»«البيان “The eighth edition of Art Dubai (March 19-22), which was held in Madinat Jumeirah and Mina Al Salam, witnessed the participation of 85 galleries and 500 artists from 34 countries achieved phenomenal success in terms of sales. Known as a particularly global and innovative event, 2014 saw the fair expand to include three distinct gallery programmes: Contemporary, at its most diverse yet, and featuring both established galleries and upcoming artspaces; Marker, which this year focused on the Caucasus and Central Asia; and the inaugural Art Dubai Modern, dedicated to masters from the Middle East and South Asia who proved influential through the twentieth century. Over half the visitors who attended this year’s fair feel that the selection of galleries presented is what differentiates Art Dubai from other fairs, with over 90% reporting high satisfaction with the quality, as well as the geographic diversity, of the galleries showcased in 2014.* “Since its inception in 2007, Art Dubai has contributed significantly to formulating a new cultural identity for this Gulf emirate, attracting the world’s leading galleries, hosting valuable works of art and becoming a major factor in reviving the art market.” Al Hayat, United Kingdom, March 23, 2014 artdubai.ae/galleries *According to a survey of 845 visitors that attended the fair in 2014 ART DUBAI Review 2014 30 محاكاة الفن العالمي بآليات اإلبداع في فضاءات... »««آرت دبي »أعماال فنية لمشاهير الفنانين والصاالت الفنية عميقة تضم ً 2014 مارس30 ، ُعمان،»«الوطن “Art Dubai … a simulation of international art through mechanisms of creativity at thoughtful spaces that included works of renowned artists and galleries.” Al Watan, Oman, March 30, 2014 “Art fairs are always about selling art, but a fair such as Art Dubai also reflects the more unstable and evolving nature of an emerging art scene: the fair’s role in drawing attention to the Emirate’s small but growing circuit of commercial galleries and nonprofits can’t be underestimated, and the presence of the fair as focal point for the scene is significant.” ArtReview, United Kingdom, March 2014 “Signe que la Foire plaît: 90% des exposants, présents l’an dernier, ont postulé de nouveau cette année. C’est le cas de nombreuses galeries françaises.” Les Echos, France, March 21, 2014 “As proof of Art Dubai’s success: 90% of the exhibiting galleries from last year have reapplied again. The works they presented covered all artistic media–including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, video, photography and performance. The inaugural Art Dubai Modern included 11 galleries, each of which presented a solo or two-person show, featuring work by modern masters. Galleries were asked to submit proposals for booth exhibitions by artists whose work has proven highly influential during the twentieth century and on later generations of artists. These proposals were reviewed by an advisory board, made up of curators and historians with a particular interest in modernist practices of the Middle East and Asia. Art Dubai Modern 2014 was advised by Savita Apte, an art historian specialising in modern and contemporary South Asian art and chair of The Abraaj Group Art Prize; Catherine David, a renowned curator with an extensive experience in the Middle East, whose exhibitions include dOCUMENTA X; Kristine Khouri, a researcher and a writer based in Beirut and co-founder of the History of Arab Modernities in the Visual Arts Study Group; and Nada Shabout, an art historian specialising in modern Arab and Iraqi art, and curator, among other exhibitions, of ‘Sajjil: A Century of Modern Art’, at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Qatar (2010). But as curatorial debuts go, Slavs and Tatars’ Marker was undoubtedly impressive, and what’s more, a highlight of Art Dubai 2014. The artworks on view introduced aesthetically innovative and critically insightful art scenes, which will continue to rise in prominence as institutions mature and artists expand their engagement with the commercial art world.” Blouin Art Info, United States, March 31, 2014 “From thorny politics to the many strands of coexisting ethnicities and languages, the art aims to present Central Asia and the Caucasus as more than just remote lands on a spinning globe.” Al Arabiya, Pan Arab, March 17, 2014 "If we are talking about discovery, then what can be a better example than the Marker section where the famous art collective in their first curatorial outing focused on Caucasus and Central Asia, a region remaining obscure despite its pluralism and complexity. Visitors were surprised to find art galleries from places like Tblisi and Baku in the section designed like a tea salon or a traditional chaikhaneh." The Hindu, India, April 5, 2014 41 ART DUBAI Review 2014 Marker Marker is Art Dubai’s curated programme of galleries and artspaces, which focuses each year on a particular theme or geography. This section aims to exemplify the fair's role as a site of discovery and cross-cultural exchange, and is a feature of Art Dubai’s extensive notfor-profit programming. In 2014, Marker turned its focus to Central Asia and the Caucasus. Curated by the artists Slavs and Tatars, this themed series of exhibitions and educational initiatives included gallery booth exhibitions, talks, research projects and commissioned artists’ projects. Slavs and Tatars worked with each space and their artists to present existing and new work that together forms a collective exhibition through a ‘regime of portraiture’, including faces, places and traces from mid-twentiethcentury painting to contemporary drawings and sculptures. At the fair, Marker took the form of a chaikhaneh or Eurasian (tea) salon, to activate each work as a point of departure, to tell larger stories touching upon questions of faith, language, landscape; and importantly, how these notions are ritualised, interiorised, and hybridised beyond the often brittle politics of identity. Each year, we work with guest artists to build a photographic and design campaign around our bilingual logo and identity, developed by Kemistry Design. The 2014 campaign is based on a collection of various images from previous editions of Art Dubai. Through a unique play of silhouettes, shadows, angles and colours, this series of imagery formed a web of interlacing stories that reflected a visual narrative of the fair’s journey and experience. The 2014 visual identity appears throughout Art Dubai’s advertising campaign and marketing collateral, revealing an imaginative interplay of perception and relationships between visitors, artworks, galleries and so on. Art Dubai’s gallery halls design was advised by Ibda Design, an international architecture, urban and interior design practice based in Dubai with collaboration offices in Beirut and Tokyo. The Absolut Art Bar at this year’s fair was conceptualised and devised by Dubai-based art and designer collective Caravan. Titled ‘A Grain of Sand’, Caravan reflected on the surrounding environment, creating a desert landscape from recycled corrugated cardboard and other paper materials, which flowed into one another, making organic, nature inspired shapes. ART DUBAI Review 2014 78 79 Press Art Dubai 2014 featured a particularly strong turnout by and support from the media, with the highest-ever recorded attendance at the fair press conference. Over 400 journalists, writers and art critics, from the UAE and around the world, attended the eighth edition of the fair. Art Dubai and its various programmes, across its three gallery halls–Contemporary, Modern and Marker–as well as the fair’s not-for-profit programming including Art Dubai Projects, the Global Art Forum, Art Dubai Film and The Sheikha Manal Little Artists Program were all previewed, covered and reviewed in over 900 articles between April 2013 and April 2014. Yet the fair itself is telling another, lesser-known story. Dubai is becoming a place that welcomes artists like Sunoj, funded by the fair, to create.” The Financial Times, United Kingdom, March 20, 2014 109 ART DUBAI Review 2014 ART DUBAI PROJECTS Art Dubai Projects invites upcoming and established artists, predominantly from Asia and the Middle East, to create new works at the fair. Artists are encouraged to engage audiences and interact with the fair, its economy and format, embracing the theatrical nature of the event. The programme illustrates the role that an art fair can play in the local community: this year’s programme was extraordinarily collaborative, featuring partnerships with foundations and institutions including Al Barari, Alserkal Avenue Arts District, Art Salon, the British Council, Delfina Foundation, Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and Tashkeel, while the A.i.R Dubai residency programme brought in new voices to the arts scene and facilitated the exchange of ideas, technique and experience. ART DUBAI Review 2014 110 .. Allows leading curators and gallerists to discover new work by upcoming artists from the region .. Provides international and Emirati artists with opportunities for exchange–of skills, expertise and ideas–in the context of the UAE .. Supports and nurtures artists from the Middle East and Asia through residencies and commissions, and in the production of new work–essential for their career development .. Presents new, dynamic and themed artists’ projects and performances to a global audience of arts professionals, critics and enthusiasts through the platform of Art Dubai .. Encourages the participation and development of local audiences through interactive, participatory projects .. Pushes the boundaries of what an art fair can be, positioning Art Dubai as the most innovative of arts events – grounded in the Gulf, yet of global significance Artists commissioned to create new works for Art Dubai Projects 2014 ranged from: UAE pioneer Najat Makki to upcoming Emirati artists Maitha Demithan, Sara Al Haddad and Maryam Al Qassimi; India-based artist Sunoj D and collective Clark House Initiative; as well as artists from the region and beyond including Nadia Ayari, Youmna Chlala, Shuruq Harb, Amina Menia, Mounira Al Solh and Hajra Waheed. Art Dubai was able to create around itself a large infrastructure of art and cultural centres, galleries, cinemas, theatres and museums always attended by rich educated middle class audience. Astutely, organisers succeeded in grasping and interacting with cultural and artistic issues which have turned the space into a geographic hub for larger Asia centres (India, Iran, Iraq and Syria) to balance and compete with post-Soviet states and centres of the West and Africa. As a result, the western centralism was shifted from its place and similar activities are now starting to take place in Doha, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Jeddah implying a revolutionary action that will wisely and gently change the rigid cultural models using the power of civilizational attraction rather than canons and jet fighters; the new Arabic approach to develop culture in deepest sense.” Al Quds Al Arabi, United Kingdom, March 30, 2014 ART DUBAI Review 2014 114 115 ART DUBAI Review 2014 The critically-acclaimed, interactive programme featured: .. Selfie Booth, WC - an asymmetrical sculpture set in the public bathrooms at the fair that doubled as an armature for New York-based Tunisian artist Nadia Ayari’s fresco paintings. The piece interfered with the fait-accomplis of contemporary modes of art consumption while celebrating their focus on ‘thing-ness’, prompting audiences to take ‘selfies’ in front of her installation. .. The Desire Path - New York-based Lebanese artist Youmna Chlala’s garden that welcomed visitors on their arrival to the fair, was an intervention into the movement and flow of bodies at Art Dubai. The installation reactivated the site by inserting an untamed path to be negotiated both at the threshold and throughout the fair; the basic act of walking reimagined through intuition, impulse and calculation. .. The Kinematic Modern - located at Art Dubai Modern, a fictional narration via installation of Mumbai-based collective Clark House Initiative's study of modernism through Indian Modernist and Contemporary art and Cinema, working with artist Justin Ponmany to make visual links between various Indian Modernists. .. Zero to the right - a sound project which commented on the various paradigms of money, trade and commerce that permeate Dubai’s social structure, in the context of artist Sunoj D’s region, Kerala, where the economy and social status is driven by its many migrants to the Middle East and the money they make there. The artist converted his production budget into Dirhams and Indian Rupees vocalising numbers individually and creating a meditative quality to the acts of both reciting and listening to these numbers. .. Live Portraiture - a live scanning booth by Emirati artist Maitha Demithan who invited visitors and participants of Art Dubai to enter the space and volunteer parts of their body (face, hand, foot) to be scanned. Collected images were stitched together to form a singular portrait of the fair audience, absorbing the individual’s distinctive character as the consumer is consumed. .. therefore; thereafter - a site-specific installation by Emirati artist Sara Al Haddad that intervened with the architecture of a stairwell and was motivated by notions of material value, time and memory. The work was created using balls of plastic yarn to transform the space, leaving behind the aftermath of the repetitive and durational act of crochet. .. Postulant Angels: The Unofficial Catalogue of Paul Klee - an intervention within the Art Dubai Catalogue and the Art Dubai Modern foyer by Palestinian artist Shuruq Harb, which unveiled a series of paintings and drawings, along with correspondences, documents and requests for the authentication of potential works by Paul Klee, one of the early masters of Modern Art. This year marked an important shift at Art Dubai with the inclusion of Art Dubai Modern and comes at a time where the influence of Modern Art and its history in the region is something that is still being investigated, historicised, contested and re-written. .. A Story of Currency - an installation by Emirati artist Dr Najat Makki that drew on the histories of antique coins found in the Gulf region; at once, a currency, a form of cultural identity and a means of communications, reaffirming power through symbol and portraiture. Makki further expanded on these histories through her paintings, influenced by the narratives behind these various antique currencies. .. The Crying Stone - a tribute by Algerian artist Amina Menia to a traveling stone, extracted in Marseilles, crossing by boat to Algiers to be used for construction of social housing, and continuing through to Dubai. A pretext for rethinking the global contemporary world and the speed at which we live, this self-reflecting stone was a symbol for the building common destinies as it breathed in and reflected various realities, continuously shaped by time as it provoked questions of economy, communication, migration and work. ART DUBAI Review 2014 116 .. Re:purpose - the grandiose bakhour sculptures at Madinat Jumeirah which were ‘activated’ by Emirati artist Maryam Al Qassimi as a performative gesture intended to recognise the absurdity and artifice in the branding of culture and return function back to arbitrary objects, turned decorative sculpture, deemed as cultural icons. .. Clogged - an installation, interaction and performance by Syrian artist Mounira Al Solh that prompted Art Dubai visitors to borrow the typical Syrian bath clog in exchange for their art fair shoes. Through a reversal of the gaze, the work, the clog, functioned as a mediator, as a detail in a political Syrian crisis, a low witness, stuck to the ground, and as an audible performance, the wearer click-clacking against the ground as they roam the fair. .. CHARACTER 1: IN THE ROUGH - a performance that took place each night of the fair on an abra in the middle of the Madinat Jumeirah lake. Using light, shadow and found objects, Montreal-based Hajra Waheed’s floating lantern narrated another chapter in the artist’s ongoing body of work Sea Change that stitches back a story on the missing and the missed, glimpsing into the fragments of ourselves we leave behind, and the offerings we make to all those along the way. An MA graduate of Bard College, Art Dubai Projects 2014 curator Fawz Kabra is a writer and curator currently living in New York. Fawz previously curated public programmes at the Cultural District, Abu Dhabi (2011), and co-curated the ongoing project Brief Histories, Sharjah (2011), and worked for WS: Paul McCarthy at the Park Avenue Armory, New York (2013). She is an editorial correspondent for Ibraaz. Art Dubai Projects 2014 was supported by Alserkal Avenue Arts District and Art Salon. Art Dubai 2014 Projects artist Youmna Chlala’s installation was supported by Al Barari. 117 ART DUBAI Review 2014 ART DUBAI Review 2014 118 119 ART DUBAI Review 2014 A.I.R DUBAI For the last three years, Art Dubai has partnered with Delfina Foundation, Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and Tashkeel on Artists-in-Residence (A.i.R) Dubai, an annual residency programme which gives Emirati and international artists and curators the opportunity to be based in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood (formerly known as Al Bastakiya), in Dubai. Through an open call for Emirati artists and a nomination process for international artists, the three-month residency, designed for artists and a guest curator, culminates in an Open Studios exhibition, held parallel to SIKKA Art Fair, an artist-led fair run by Dubai Culture, as well as projects at Art Dubai each March. A.i.R Dubai supports artists by providing a platform to develop their practice and create new work, while facilitating exchange between the artists, the local communities, and the broader cultural landscape. Furthermore, the curator-in-residence position gives an upcoming practitioner the opportunity to write, research and cultivate ideas for future projects that engage with the regional artistic sphere. The programme also aims to nurture and encourage intercultural dialogue through contemporary art. A.i.R Dubai 2014 featured five artists from across the Middle East and Asia: Nadia Ayari, Sunoj D, Maitha Demithan, Sara Al Haddad and Maryam Al Qassimi, who worked alongside curator-in-residence İpek Ulusoy Akgül. ART DUBAI Review 2014 120 FILM Art Dubai Film is a programme of video and film by and about artists. Besides video artworks shown in the gallery booths, the fair’s long-term commitment to showing artists' video and film has included the ‘Art Park’, curated by Bidoun Projects, and ‘The Hatch’, a stairwell screen showing artists’ film and video in curated, thematic programmes. In 2014, the fair programme included a cinema space at the fair featuring films, plus a screening in Sharjah Mirage City Cinema. The film programme included: .. Middle East premiere of Towards the Possible Film (2014) - set on the beaches of Sidi Ifni in Morocco, London-based artist Shezad Dawood’s film saw a tribal group savagely attack blue-skinned astronauts who arrive on earth from space; formally enacting and contextually engaging with anthropological concepts of indigenousness and the politics of language and translation through the prismatic genre of science fiction. .. A Space of Celebration (2009) – against the backdrop of a Summer ‘wedding season’, Russian artist Taus Makhacheva’s film highlighted a new culture of celebration, through which, the architecture, execution and organisation of a wedding event itself, embodies a “secular” interpretation of traditions today. .. The Stuart Hall Project (2013) - a lyrical archive-based documentary, by John Akomfrah, as seen through the life of one of Europe’s foremost radical intellectuals, Professor Stuart Hall. Narrated by Hall from public interviews and 121 ART DUBAI Review 2014 broadcasts he made over sixty years on TV and radio, Akomfrah opened up multiple doors and chapters of international history for closer inspection, creating an impressionistic journey through time and space refracted through Hall’s life and ideas. Film screenings were accompanied by an evening of conversation between Dawood and writer and critic Kaelen Wilson-Goldie, as well as a conversation between Makhacheva and Ibraaz managing editor Stephanie Bailey. MOVING IMAGES ‘Moving Images’, a new partnership between Dubai International Film Festival, Sharjah Art Foundation and Art Dubai, dedicated to artists’ films and filmmakers’ art, was launched in 2013. Exploring the intersection between art and film, ‘Moving Images’ aims to increase access to, and the understanding of, artists’ films; support artists and filmmakers from the Arab world through new opportunities; and debate existing and future models for funding and distribution through the UAE and beyond. The programme marks the first such initiative in the Arab world and began with a discussion in December, part of Dubai Film Market’s talks programme, involving speakers from across the worlds of art and film. The partnership continued throughout the year, with screenings in Dubai and Sharjah, including at the Art Dubai Cinema during the fair in March. Shezad Dawood's and John Akomfrah's presence at Art Dubai was kindly supported by the British Council. ART DUBAI Review 2014 122 RADIO Falgoosh Radio returned to Art Dubai in 2014. Curated and programmed by UK-based sound artists Fari Bradley and Chris Weaver, this dynamic project invited fair visitors to observe the (normally hidden) process of radio production, and listen-in live at the fair. Elsewhere and anywhere, listeners could tune in to a continual schedule of interviews and discussions with fair participants, plus sound works and fringe DJ sets commissioned by Six Pillars especially for this year’s fair. Building on the experience of the 2013 project, Falgoosh Radio 2014 moved towards a self-generative model, with peer-to-peer interviews and discussions. Fair participants invited to take part included: artists James Clar, Shezad Dawood, Abdulnasser Gharem, Samia Halaby, Waqas Khan, Lucien Samaha and Slavs and Tatars; gallerists Robert Goff, Rose Issa, Asmaa Al Shabibi; LACMA curator Linda Komaroff and Maraya Arts Centre’s Dana Al Sadek; as well as Art Dubai interns and Global Art Forum speakers through highlights from the 2014 sessions. Fari Bradley's and Chris Weaver's presence at Art Dubai was kindly supported by the British Council. حمال على حياته وممارسته اآلنية ً 2014 مارس20 ، اإلمارات العربية المتحدة,»«اإلمارات اليوم “Winners were selected by a committee of art experts on the basis of submitted written proposals; a mechanism that has turned artists into writers conquering horizons of imagination […] which in turn were manifested in an exhibition that seems to reflect on the dialectic relation with memory and dig into the past which carries all traces of what things left in man’s life and temporary practices.” Emarat El Youm, UAE, March 20, 2014 “A mutable thing since its inception six years ago, the prize has always been lucrative. With each artist receiving $100,000 to realize a piece, [The Abraaj Group Art Prize] has afforded emerging artists an chance to create more ambitious work than usually possible in a region where both state support and private patronage of the arts are rare as hens’ teeth.” Daily Star, Lebanon, March 2014 127 ART DUBAI Review 2014 The Abraaj Group Art Prize is the leading award for artists based in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia (MENASA) region. Now in its sixth year, the prize awards artists annually on the basis of proposals rather than completed works or previous exhibitions. The number of works that have been created and go on to form The Abraaj Group Art Collection has now grown to 26. Since its inception, the prize has evolved considerably and the works are increasingly exhibited in major international biennials— including the Sharjah Biennial 11 and the Biennale of Sydney—and world-class museums—such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Smithsonian Museum of Asian Art, Washington D.C. The prize reflects The Abraaj Group’s wider investment philosophy, which is to take viable businesses with great potential, and create regional and global champions. ART DUBAI Review 2014 128 The 2014 Abraaj Group Art Prize winners were: Abbas Akhavan, Kamrooz Aram, Bouchra Khalili, Basim Magdy and Anup Mathew Thomas. Their works were exhibited at Art Dubai in an exhibition entitled ‘Garden and Spring’, conceived by guest curator Nada Raza who worked closely with the artists as their projects evolved. The exhibition was accompanied by an innovative digital publication (gardenandspring.com), designed by Michael Salu and featuring original texts by authors Nadeem Aslam, Githa Hariharan, Pankaj Mishra, Ruth Padel and Wiam El-Tamami, who were commissioned to respond to the artists' project proposals, their ideas and work. The Selection Committee for The Abraaj Group Art Prize comprises Antonia Carver, Director, Art Dubai; Dana Farouki, Patron; Glenn Lowry, Director, the Museum of Modern Art; Salwa Mikdadi, art historian and curator; Jessica Morgan, Daskalopoulos Curator, International Art, Tate; Julia Peyton-Jones, Co-Director, The Serpentine Gallery; and Fayeeza Naqvi, Patron. artdubai.ae/abraaj-group-art-prize 129 ART DUBAI Review 2014 ART DUBAI Review 2014 130 .. Study for a Hanging Garden - an installation of flowers, stems, leaves and roots, sculpted and cast in bronze, and displayed in groupings, which rested on the ground. Taking Abbas Akhavan’s ongoing interest in plant and animal species, the work referenced ancient mythological gardens, recent political climates, plant taxonomy and fragile contemporary ecologies; exploring the paradox inherent in attempts to permanently fix and control forms of life despite the inevitable shifts in power and transience of time and memory. .. Ancient Though Modern: A Collection of Uncertain Objects, Part 1 - a wall installation that consisted of various elements of paintings, ceramics and collage by Kamrooz Aram. The objects were exhibited in a manner that evoked the displays in popular museums such as the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, taking what the artist referred to as “cultural nostalgia” as a subject, and investigating how museums, and the objects displayed within them, serve a longing for our mythical pasts and claims of origin. .. Garden Conversation – a film by Berlin-based Moroccan artist Bouchra Khalili that restaged a mythical encounter between two renegade heroes, seeking wisdom for our time. Looking back to January 1959, when Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara met the exiled hero of the Rif War (1921-26), Abdelkarim Al Khattabi in Cairo, Khalili’s film blurred historic fact and poetic fiction to hypothesize what the ghosts of Guevara and Khattabi would speak of were they to meet today. .. The Dent – starting with shiny rooftops and ending with the seemingly insignificant demise of the last circus elephant, a film by Basim Magdy that loosely weaved linked events and irrational occurrences to reflect upon collective failure and hopefulness. Shot between Paris, Brussels, Quebec, Basel, Madeira, Prague and Venice, among other locations, Magdy constructed a narrative 131 ART DUBAI Review 2014 through gestures and indirect affiliations between layers of sound, image and text to respond to the absurdity of the little details that manifest into our reality. .. Nurses – a group of portraits capturing women of Keralan origin employed in hospitals and care facilities around the world by Indian artist Anup Mathew Thomas. Through carefully staged portraiture, the work formed part of a larger body of work referencing Thomas’ native Kerala, where nurses are the single largest group of professional female migrants and where the economy is largely dependent on foreign remittances. Displayed in a grid, the images merged to form a patchwork background from which the individuals emerge, a visual record of the possible variations within contemporary migratory patterns. Students have gained free entry to the Gulf event since it began in 2007. At this year’s edition, in March, education packs provided details of key artists and movements for students and lecturers.” The Financial Times, United Kingdom, May 2014 “From competitions like the Abraaj Group Art Prize, to workshops like the Sheikha Manal little artist programme, there truly is something for everyone to see! [...] Hopefully with more initiatives like Art Dubai, an abundance of geniuses will continue to be discovered. They too will get their chance to tell their stories to the world.” Sara Japanwalla Blog, March 23, 2014 135 ART DUBAI Review 2014 Education has been at the heart of Art Dubai since its launch in 2007; the fair now has the largest education programming of any such event worldwide, providing opportunities for children through to students, graduates, collectors and enthusiasts. Art Dubai Education includes Campus Art Dubai, Forum Fellows, artist-led children’s programmes, artists’ talks and the critically acclaimed Global Art Forum. Our educational programming is run in partnership with Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. The 2014 fair attracted a high level of attendance from universities and colleges, welcoming more than 500 UAE and GCCbased students on specially organized tours. Featuring artist-led workshops, tours and other projects, the programme provides access to skills and ideas for UAE-based children and teenagers aged 5-16–with the long-term aim to encourage young people to get involved and excel in the arts. 139 ART DUBAI Review 2014 This year also featured the return of Discovery Tours (for ages 8-16) led by artists, including Athier Moussawi, Rania Jishi and Sara Naim. These tours enabled young people to discover all aspects of the fair, with the works brought alive via a series of maps and the story-telling of the guides. In 2014 the programme expanded, and featured Australia-based artist Dylan Martorell, who works in drawing, installation and sound, and who, for Art Dubai, devised and led a set of dynamic and innovative workshops (for ages 5-12) that involved young artists creating sounds from drawings and instruments from upcycled materials. Emirati artists Reem Falaknaz and Khawla Darwish assisted the workshops and took part in a special workshop with Martorell for UAEbased artists interested in developing their skills in both sound art and children’s art education. Born in Scotland in 1971, Dylan Martorell lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. Transience, improvisation and collaboration form the basis of his music-based art practice. Housed within the conceptual framework of a musical diaspora, his work is drawn to ways in which music travels through space and is affected by changes in geography, climate, culture and materials, and can become an agent for crosscultural reciprocation. ART DUBAI Review 2014 140 141 ART DUBAI Review 2014 The children's programme catered to 1,000 young artists and was held under the patronage and guidance of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Women Establishment, Wife of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs UAE, and forms part of the activity of The Cultural Office. In April 2014, Art Dubai and The Cultural Office signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding with a view to strengthen the cooperation and to establish upcoming special programmes and initiatives between the two organisations, with the aim of supporting the development of young emerging artists in the UAE. ART DUBAI Review 2014 142 “'It’s amazing to have a space to be creative in, especially to be surrounded by other artists – that helps us develop,' says Rania Jishi, a painter and conceptual artist.” The National, UAE, October 28, 2013 “Art Dubai opened its popular Campus Art Dubai doors to a wider membership in October, and is providing an ongoing flow of programs such as talks, screenings and debates throughout the year.” ArtAsiaPacific, Hong Kong, March 2014 143 ART DUBAI Review 2014 CAMPUS ART DUBAI Campus Art Dubai is a school for artists, curators, writers, cultural producers and art workers based in the UAE. The course is taught and led by a local and international cast of academics, critics, curators and artists. Meetings occur over weekends and feature seminars, workshops, critiques and one-onone mentorship. The course provides a space for critical thinking and the exchange of ideas and skills, with participants encouraged to collaborate, debate and challenge. The programme consists of a six-month Core class for a small group of participants as well as a much larger Membership programme, in addition to year-round seminars and talks open to the public. Campus Art Dubai 2.0 began in October 2013 and ended in March 2014, culminating at Art Dubai with the launch of a limited edition book of “recipes” contributed by the 16 participants of the Core class. The school’s second iteration looked at ‘Mediation’ and was led by Tirdad Zolghadr; other tutors included Umer Butt, Aaron Cezar, Scott Fitzgerald, Salwa Mikdadi, Uzma Rizvi, Oraib Toukan and Murtaza Vali. ART DUBAI Review 2014 144 The participants of Campus Art Dubai 2.0’s Core programme were: İpek Ulusoy Akgül, Vikram Divecha, Ignacio Gomez, Sara Al Haddad, Wael Hattar, Alicia Hughes, Ferwa Ibrahim, Sheikha Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum, Hasnat Mehmood, Raja’a Khalid, Maryam Al Qassimi, Zarmina Raf, Faysal Tabbara, Sarah Turner, Suheyla Takesh and UBIK. This year’s Membership programme saw over 200 participants engaging in a series of talks, seminars and workshops on various topics including an emphasis on regional Art History, the intersection between art and film–through a partnership with Dubai International Film Festival–as well as sessions focused on the development of artist portfolios and writing skills, with access to key figures in the local, regional and international art scenes. Additionally, Core participants Raja'a Khalid and Suheyla Takesh were both awarded special fellowships and stipends as part of a collaborative effort between Campus Art Dubai and the New York University Abu Dhabi FIND programme. Campus Art Dubai is part of Art Dubai’s educational programming and is held in partnership with Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, and is supported by d3 Dubai Design District. In 2013-14, the school was generously hosted by a number of UAE-based spaces and art institutions including A4 Space in Alserkal Avenue Arts District, Satellite, thejamjar, Tashkeel, Sharjah Art Foundation, and Dubai International Film Festival. 145 ART DUBAI Review 2014 In a survey of participants, 100% of responders agreed that programmes like Campus Art Dubai are needed in the UAE, and felt that they had met fellow participants or visiting tutors who they expect to work or collaborate with in the future. 80% felt that Campus Art Dubai was most useful in developing their ideas and practices, and 90% of responders said they would apply again to be considered for participation in later iterations of Campus Art Dubai. ART DUBAI Review 2014 146 PARTICIPANT FEEDBACK* “CAD did in fact, for the first time in my 22 years here in Dubai, make me feel that a sense of community was actually possible in this city and maybe even sustainable.” “The program definitely is crucial in its attempt to create a discourse in the region.” “I think that CAD is a great concept for the region. It enlightened me to other artists and workers in Dubai and allowed me to enter in to dialogue with other artists/makers.” “Campus Art Dubai is good at connecting the art community, it's a great place to meet likeminded people, share ideas, and create lasting friendships/collaborations. Visiting tutors have a lot to offer.” “I thought it was a great opportunity to do some intensive thinking and sharing of work and ideas on the weekend, in a place such as Dubai where there isn't otherwise much of an opportunity to do so.” *From a survey of Campus Art Dubai participants conducted in April 2014 147 ART DUBAI Review 2014 ART DUBAI Review 2014 148 INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME Since Art Dubai’s Internship Programme was initiated in September 2007, over 400 students and recent graduates from 40 nationalities and 18 educational institutions have participated in the scheme and gone on to find further work experience opportunities and permanent placements within Art Dubai and its partner organisations. One third of the interns have been Emirati and the remaining came from countries from across the Arab world and beyond. Internships are typically intensive three-month placements during which participants engage in a particular area of the organisation. In addition, Art Dubai works with around 60 temporary interns and volunteers each year at the fair itself. 149 ART DUBAI Review 2014 ART DUBAI Review 2014 150 “What makes Art Dubai more engaging than your average art fair is the evident pressure to create situations that might shape the emerging art world around it, both critically and institutionally. So a major component of the fair is its hosting of the Global Art Forum, which this year presented a three-day public talks programme (having started with two days in Doha the weekend before), and which co-ordinates a networking vehicle for artists and curators, the ‘forum fellows’ meetings.” ArtReview, United Kingdom, March 2014 151 ART DUBAI Review 2014 FORUM FELLOWS The Forum Fellows programme brings together a select group of exceptional young curators, writers and translators every year at Art Dubai. In the long-term, this intense programme aims to develop an alumni group of dynamic practitioners who exchange ideas and experience, and promote best practice. In 2014, the fellowship programme focused on curating and was led by writer and curator Tirdad Zolghadr. Fellows were funded and supported throughout the week of the fair and took part in daily 3 hour workshops, attended Global Art Forum sessions, as well as other events on the VIP Programme, and took the opportunity to network during the fair and via its various programmes. Fellows selected for the 2014 programme were: Amanda Abi Khalil; Azar Mahmoudian; Yasmina Reggad; Yara Saqfalhait and Ania Szremski. Forum Fellows 2014 was supported by the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC). ART DUBAI Review 2014 152 This year’s Forum Fellows endeavoured to formulate criteria, definitions and discourses pertaining to contemporary art curating. Curators take pride in the idea that their profession defies clear categorisation. And yet a certain number of historical developments, professional narratives and institutional prerogatives do point toward a surprisingly clear set of curatorial specificities. Our group discerned these traits and also aimed to understand why they are so arduously dissimulated. At the same time, the session attempted to account for conditions the fellows face as curators within their own respective contexts. .. Amanda Abi Khalil is a curator based in Beirut where she teaches and works as a public art consultant. She studied sociology and anthropology of art, graduating with an MA in Curating Art for Public Spaces. She has worked with several art institutions and was the curator of The HANGAR in Beirut. .. The GAF’s programme this year, under the title ‘Meanwhile...History’ was an eclectic and often illuminating assembly of presentations and panel discussions on various aspects of the history of the Arab peninsula, from the nineteenth-century pearl farming trade to the history of modernist architecture in Kuwait.” ArtReview, United Kingdom, March 2014 “The fair's emphasis and investment in the Global Art Forum is a perfect example: the people we've met in Dubai during the fair the past couple years, from UN policy thinkers to writers, dentists to artists, are a testament to the discursive energy that can result directly or indirectly from a fair." The Huffington Post (Q&A with Slavs and Tatars), United States, March 2014 “I've said this before and will say it again, the Global Art Forum is my favourite part of Art […] At the press conference, Shumon Basar, Global Art Forum commissioner, said this which made me laugh and explains why I love the Global Art Forum, “It’s not a conference, it’s not TED 'x,' ‘y’ or ‘z’. It’s not a wedding speech, you won’t see any wedding furniture, although people have been known to fall in love during the Global Art Forum.” المعرفة بطريقة أو بأخرى 2014 أبريل8 ، المملكة المتحدة،»«الشرق األوسط “Remarkably at this year’s edition of Global Art Forum was the uncommon information shared with audience for the first time; something that transformed the forum into a rich symposium that doesn’t only aim to explore different cognitive realms but also regenerates that cognition in a way or another.” Asharq Al Awsat, United Kingdom, April 8, 2014 ART DUBAI Review 2014 158 Featuring commissioned projects and research, as well as live talks guided by a curated theme, the Global Art Forum brings together a diverse line-up of more than 40 participants, including artists, curators, musicians, strategists, thinkers and writers; an array of regional and international voices from the worlds of literature, politics, publishing and art. Having become a major, collaborative event in the art world calendar, the Forum is illustrative of Art Dubai’s propensity for encouraging debate. 159 ART DUBAI Review 2014 In 2014, the eighth edition of the Global Art Forum was codirected by curator-translator Omar Berrada and artist Ala Younis, and commissioned by writer Shumon Basar. The title ‘Meanwhile...History’ was conceived by Qatari artist Sophia Al-Maria. Following on from 2013’s ‘It Means This’, which assembled a lexicon of words, acronyms and phrases to navigate reality, the Forum was an imagined timeline of turning points in the past; significant decades, years or days that shifted an understanding of the world—but that remained forgotten, erased or lost in history’s blind spots. Every presentation was a point on this timeline, a journey through known and unknown histories, reflecting on the philosophy and fiction of making history matter. How it’s framed or claimed, constructed or destroyed. What is the “...” in time and narrative? The Forum also included a range of commissioned projects: ‘video postcards’; the Forum Forum, a space for screenings and informal social sculpture; and the Forum Fellows, a fellowship programme for young curators, writers and translators. In 2014, the Forum began at Katara Art Center in Doha (March 15-16), before continuing at Art Dubai (March 19-21). The Forum was presented by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, and was held in partnership with the Office of Strategic Cultural Relations at Qatar Museums Authority through their Years of Culture annual initiative. The team of Art Dubai...is always helpful and creative, ready to provide solutions on the spot and that said, impossible to deny the spectacular growth of the fair in the past two editions.” Artsy, United States, March 2014 213 ART DUBAI Review 2014 ART DUBAI Review 2014 214 ART DUBAI TEAM FAIR DIRECTOR Antonia Carver FAIR MANAGEMENT Natasha Carella, Fair Manager Muhammad Akram, Accountant Patricia Tueller, Fair Coordinator Camilla Mosse, Fair Coordinator Laurène Perra, Sponsor Relations EXHIBITOR RELATIONS Zain Masud, Assistant Fair Director Bettina Klein, Exhibitor Relations Manager Aric Reviere, Exhibitor Relations Assistant Yekaterina Serebryanaya, Marker Assistant Curator COLLECTOR AND VIP RELATIONS Lela Csáky, Director, International and VIP Relations Victoria Gandit Lelandais, Manager, Collectors Circle & Art Salon Inhye Kim, VIP Relations Assistant Roland Carella, Fair Coordinator Sarah Gage, Fair Coordinator Amila Tissera, Travel Coordinator GLOBAL ART FORUM Uns Kattan, Global Art Forum Coordinator Miriam Butti, Global Art Forum Assistant ART DUBAI PROJECTS Fawz Kabra, Projects Curator Beya Othmani, Projects Assistant COMMUNICATIONS Mayssa Jaroudi, Press and Marketing Manager Muhanad Ali, Regional Press Manager Farah Al Sharief, Press and Digital Media Coordinator THE ABRAAJ GROUP ART PRIZE Nida Ghouse, The Abraaj Group Art Prize Coordinator CAMPUS ART DUBAI Lee Xie, Campus Art Dubai Coordinator Geraldine Lee, Campus Art Dubai Assistant ART WEEK Karen Simon, Special Projects Coordinator FAIR DESIGN Hani Charaf Tulip Hazbar 215 ART DUBAI Review 2014 ART DUBAI FAIR LLC BOARD OF DIRECTORS Rajesh Pareek, Chairman Benedict Floyd, CEO Savita Apte Saleh Al Akrabi Ali Al Shabibi ART DUBAI 1901, Floor 19, Index Tower DIFC PO Box 72645 Dubai, UAE T +971 4 384 2000 [email protected] ART DUBAI Review 2014 216 DUBAI INTERNTIONAL FINANCIAL CENTRE Art Dubai is run as a joint venture between Art Dubai Fair LLC and the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) is an onshore financial centre that provides a supportive and secure platform for financial institutions to develop their businesses. Located in a 110-acre financial district, DIFC has all the elements found in the world’s most successful financial industry ecosystem: an independent regulator, an independent judicial system with a commonlaw framework, a global financial exchange, inspiring architecture, suppose services and a vibrant business community. This, combined with Dubai’s world-renowned lifestyle, education, healthcare and transportation, make DIFC the perfect base to take advantage of the region’s rapidly growing demand for financial services. 217 ART DUBAI Review 2014 SUPPORTING A STRONG ARTS SCENE DIFC supports a strong place for art in the community, not only because there are multiple commercially associated links between art and finance, but also because DIFC believes that art can stimulate news ideas and new perspectives in business. Not only does DIFC serve as home to one of Dubai’s most well-known gallery communities, but it also places works of art in public spaces across the financial district to complement the Centre’s beautiful architecture. Ultimately, DIFC’s support for a strong arts scene has helped establish Dubai as a regional and international centre for arts and culture, with galleries based in DIFC offering an eclectic mix of contemporary art from across the world. artdubai.ae/difc ArtDubai.AE strategic Partner
