XTREME BULLS In 2012, Kanin Asay became the first man to win a second Xtreme Bulls title – his first came in 2007 – and he also had some fun at the 2012 Wrangler NFR, including this 78-point ride on Classic Pro Rodeo’s Seminole Wind. PRCA ProRodeo photo by Mike Copeman What is Xtreme Bulls? The PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour showcases the PRCA’s top bull riders and some of the rankest bulls the world has to offer; Xtreme Bulls bull riders include the top bull riders from the PRCA World Standings as well as contestants who advance through Xtreme Bulls qualifying events. In Xtreme Bulls events, every contestant competes in the first round, with the top performers advancing to the final round. The winner of the two-head average after the final round earns the title for that Tour stop. Money won on the PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour counts toward the PRCA World Standings for bull riding, which determine the qualifiers for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, but it does not count toward the PRCA’s all-around standings. There were eight Division I Xtreme Bulls events in 2011 and in 2012, all televised by Great American Country. Kanin Asay’s roaring 2012 comeback season followed a roller-coaster 2011 – a year which began with a round win in Rapid City, S.D., and a big paycheck in San Antonio, but was then professionally derailed by an aggravated injury necessitating six months of post-surgery rehab and personally devastated by the sudden death of his “biggest fan,” his mother. But Asay was off crutches by September 2011, the same month he and wife Sydney welcomed their first child into the world, and ready to compete when the New Year rolled around. His 2012 season started out positive and only got better: • Asay tied for fifth in the average at the first PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour stop of the year, in Rapid City, S.D., in January; he then notched a triumph at the next Tour stop, San Antonio, a month later, when he finished first in both rounds with scores of 89 and 91 points. No one had accomplished that feat since Corey Navarre did it a year earlier, also in San Antonio. • Asay was the only contestant to win two 2012 tour stops – San Antonio in February and Lovington, N.M., in August. They were his first Xtreme Bulls victories since 2007, the year he won his first Xtreme Bulls Tour championship. While more than 350 contestants have placed at least once over the 10-year span of the Xtreme Bulls Tour and 47 have won at least one Tour stop, only 11 have won two or more Tour stops in the same year. • While Asay did not win the Tour Finale in September, he did pick up enough money from a second-round win and fourth place finish in the average to win his second Xtreme Bulls Tour Championship. Asay is the only man to have won two Xtreme Bulls overall titles. The 2012 PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour Finale was won by Seth Glause of Cheyenne, Wyo., whose firstround score of 88.5 on Four Star Rodeo’s Speculation, for the round win, and second-round/secondplace score of 81.5 were two of the three top scores of the Finale. (Cody Teel had the high score, a 92 on Burns Rodeo’s Cooper’s Town for the final-round win.) The $20,445 Glause picked up in Ellensburg, Wash., for 16 seconds of work on Labor Day Weekend pushed him from eighth to fifth in the world standings as of that date, and contributed to his entering the 2012 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in fifth position. A few other noteworthy events of the 2012 PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour: • Two new cities joined the PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour with Division 1 events: Fort Mohave, Ariz., and Lovington, N.M. • J.W. Harris notched the highest score at an Xtreme Bulls event since 2008 with his 92.5-point ride in Lovington, N.M., in August. • Five-year PRCA bull rider Tag Elliott, still recovering from devastating injuries he acquired in a horn-to-head collision with a bull in July 2007, finished the Tour ranked seventh; his Xtreme Bulls earnings ensured his first qualification for the Wrangler NFR, as well as that of two-year Pro bull rider Brett Stall. In fact, the top eight Xtreme Bulls Tour bull riders all qualified for the NFR. For continually updated information on the PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour, visit www.Xtremebulls.com. Great American country will telecast hour-long highlight shows on all 2013 Division I PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour stops ; visit Television at ProRodeo.com for the telecast schedule. 464 XTREME BULLS Highest-scored rides 96 points: J.W.
