The Verdelago Resort is located in
the Algarve, at Altura beach (Castro
Marim), 15 Km from the Spanish border
and 50 Km from the city of Faro. It
occupies an area of about 100 hectares
with a prime seafront of 1.5 Km with
direct access to Praia Verde. The master
plan includes a 5-star Westin hotel, in
addition to a touristic village with 340
housing units, an 18-hole golf course
and all the typical amenities of large
family resort.
PROMONTORIO was invited to
submit a proposal for the design and
the programme of a Kids Club that
would be a memorable place both for
children and teenagers, following the
rationale that these are increasingly the
decision-makers of the family vacation
destination. The building was devised
as a low and faceted embankment
of gabion walls that blend with the
retaining walls and cut-off patios
against which it is set.
From this low plinth, a series of colourful
paradigmatic volumes (domes, vaults and
pyramids) popup to create an intense spatial
experience; each one being a representative
of a kindergarten activity. Outside, the
the garden is conceived as a promenade
architecturale that subtly evokes Coimbra’s
famous “Portugal dos Pequenitos”, by
resorting to elements such a cube maze,
a garden labyrinth, a super-scaled globe,
playful water spurs and amphitheatre,
besides a multipurpose court.
