OPEN HOUSE
(A Tour of
The New UHC )
Twenty-four ambulances
to transfer patients on move day
The patients will be moved from
UHC’s old facility on Davisson Run
Road to the new hospital located
off I-79, exit 124 – a distance of
15.9 miles. The move will take
24 ambulance crews 10 hours to
accomplish.
The new hospital will be in full
service at 5 a.m., Oct. 3. The first
inpatient will start the patient
transfer process when he or she
leaves the old hospital across town
at 7 a.m. in an ambulance staffed
with a UHC registered nurse who
is familiar with the patient’s history
and is prepared to continue the
patient’s level of care as if he or she
were still in the original hospital
room.
In fact, during the ride, each patient
will have the total bedside attention
of a nurse for the time it will take
to travel from one bed to another.
There will be no interruption of care
and minimal stress is anticipated.
Patients will be scheduled for
transfer on a priority basis, starting
with the most stable patients first
and then sequenced according to
a rotation of nursing units. The
transfer of the more seriously
ill patients will be interspersed
between moving the less seriously
ill patients so as to not overstress
the staff on either end of
the process.
Motorists should expect an unusual
amount of emergency service
traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on
that Sunday. If at all possible, they
should avoid using the route to be
taken during that time which would
include:
• Rt. 98 (Davisson Run Road)
from the old hospital to Rt. 50
East
• Rt. 50 to I-79 North
• I-79 North to the new hospital
at the Jerry Dove Drive, exit
#124
“We chose Sunday as our patient
move day so we wouldn’t need
traffic control; however, there
will be law enforcement manned
vehicles placed in strategic areas
along the move route to bring
attention to the particular road
interchanges on this special day,”
said Mike Tillman, UHC chief
operating officer.
Be courteous and follow the
law. Pull over as soon as safely
possible and be sure to use your
turn signal which will let the
ambulance driver know you are
aware he is there.
“While the new UHC will be
open for business on Sunday, Oct.
3, it will be a very busy day so we
encourage limiting visiting to close
family members,” said Tillman.

The first practice move with five
pretend patients went well but
another mock move – this time with
20 patients – has been scheduled
to make sure there are no glitches
when the planned transfer of an
anticipated 175 actual patients takes
place on Sunday, Oct. 3.
The emergency, surgery and
cardiovascular units in the old
hospital will remain in operation
until the last inpatient is
transferred to the new hospital at
approximately 5 p.m. Meanwhile,
some emergencies could be routed
to the new hospital, which will have
these same services in operation as
well.

The New UHC Donors
United Hospital Center has organized a tour and luncheon for those financial donors who
contributed $25,000 or more to the construction of the new facility and contents.
Many of the major areas in the hospital were named
after some of the most
generous donors: the
Cecil B. Highland, Jr.
& Barbara B. Highland
Cancer Center, the
Cecil and Rebecca
Jarvis Women and
Children’s Center, the
Cornwell Critical Care
facility, the Keeley
Women’s Imaging
Center and the Saad
Mossallati Surgery
Center.
campaign for the new United Hospital Center was
quite successful. To recognize
major donors, those gifts to
the Legacy, Leadership and
Founder’s Societies, 65 very
unique donor plaques have
been designed and placed in
significant areas throughout the
hospital.
They are truly works of art. Each
piece is a handmade original by
Randy Mardrus, an artist from
Hamburg, NJ, whose studio,
Permanent Reflections, has
been designing and creating
illuminated deep-carved art
glass since 1987.
