Aloha Mililani!
Well here we are, August! Where did the
summer go? It sure was hot this summer. I
hope you had the chance to cool off in one
of our Rec Centers. Or grab a frozen treat at
our Café and cool off in the lounge at Rec 7!
And speaking of cooling—you will be glad
to know that we are working on cooling off
some of the Rec Centers. Rec 3 has already
had air conditioning installed and Recs 1 and
5 are next in line.
After years of planning, the administration
office at Rec 3 will be rebuilt. This is an
original building and it is in desperate
need of an updating. The demo should
start late August or early September. The
administrative offices will be temporarily
moved to Rec Center 6. Our monthly board
meetings are usually held in the conference
room at Rec 3, but during construction, the
conference room will be occupied by the
accounting department so our meetings will
move to Rec 2. We have asked the contractor
to provide a rendering to be installed near
the dust screen so everyone can see what
the new building will look like. We will also
contact the surrounding residents via mail to
inform them of the construction plans. I want
to thank Dave and his staff for getting this
project resurrected and moving in the right
direction. It literally has been in the planning
stages for 19 years!
I hope your summer was an enjoyable one,
filled with travel, relaxing and catching up
with family and friends that you haven’t seen
in a while. I hope your kids are ready for the
new school year and before you know it, we
will be talking about Christmas.
Aloha,
Bob Barrett
MTA Board President

Ticket Announcement
While our Movie by the Pool events have
been selling out for two years now, due to
overwhelming demand, our last Movie by
the Pool sold out in thirty minutes. While we
are proud of how popular the event is, the
demand calls for some modifications to our
procedures in an effort to accommodate all
our members in as fair a way as possible.
Effective
immediately,
the
following
procedures will be in place for Movie by the
Pool ticket sales:
• MTA will announce in advance the date
tickets will go on sale. There will be
flyers, it will be in the newsletter, and it
will be on our web site.
• The day tickets go on sale will be a
Saturday, since a majority of members
work during the weekdays.
• MTA membership will be verified. Only
members listed in MTA’s database
may purchase tickets. Members are
owners and renters with privileges,
•
•
•
•
and household members listed on their
accounts.
One member per household may
purchase a maximum of one ticket per
person listed on their MTA account (See
below for information on how to add
unlisted household members*).
Members will not be allowed to purchase
tickets for other members.
The number of tickets for sale will
increase from 400 to 450.
No guest tickets may be purchased
until seven days after tickets go on sale,
subject to tickets still being available.
Please note that 450 tickets on sale to nearly
16,000 households will still result in a
sold out event. The event may still sell out
quickly, and there will most likely be a line to
purchase. We will not take phone sales for
tickets, tickets must be purchased in person.
* Owners: To add household members to
your property, please fill out the “Owners
Membership Information Form”. We have
included this form in the newsletter. See
page 5. You may also find this at our
Administrative Office or Business Offices at
Recreation Center 3 or 7, or download it from
our website at www.mililanitown.org.
MTA Membership Cards
A valid MTA Membership ID card provides you
access to all seven of our Recreation Centers
and the unique amenities that each one has
to offer. Membership also allows you to join
in the special events, seminars, programs,
and classes that are held in our facilities, as
well as the opportunity to take advantage of
exclusive, MTA member benefits.
Membership cards may be purchased at Recreation Center 3 and Recreation Center
7. The cost is $6.50 per person for one year,
$11.50 for two years, and $16.50 for three
years. ID cards are available to Mililani residents of any age. Cardholders 18 years old
& over may sponsor up to 4 guests into the
facilities. Children 12-17, with an MTA ID
card, may use the facilities unaccompanied
but may not sponsor guests into the facilities.
Sponsored guests and children 11 and under,
must always be accompanied by an MTA card
holder who is 18 years old or over.
Renters must have permission to get an MTA
ID from the Homeowner. Complete membership requirements and forms are available on
the “ID CARDS” page of the MTA website.

Life matters.
*APR = Annual Percentage Rate. APR as low as 0.75% APR fixed for one year (first 12 months), from the date your new home equity line of credit (HELOC) account is opened (initial fixed-rate term). After the initial
fixed-rate term, the interest rate may vary on a quarterly basis on the statement cycle date of February, May, August, and November. The APR will equal the index, which is the weekly average yield on US Treasury
Security adjusted to a constant maturity of one year, plus a margin of 2.50%, rounded up to the nearest 0.25%. The current index is 0.22% as of 5/1/15. The current non-discounted fully indexed variable APR as of 5/1/15
is 4.25%. The rate cannot increase or decrease more than 1.00% at each quarterly rate adjustment but may exceed that for the single adjustment at the end of a promotional discounted rate period. In no event will the
APR be less than 4.25%, the floor rate, nor higher than 18.00% or the maximum permitted by law, whichever is less. HawaiiUSA FCU charges no credit union closing cost; however, you will be required to pay certain fees to third
parties at closing that may range from $0 - $1,500. These fees if required include, but are not limited to, title insurance ($125-$300), escrow fees ($200-$500) recording fee ($26-$55), trust review and trust documentation ($155$400), mortgage or other document preparation fees ($125-$175), and property evaluation ($65-$100). We will use a property evaluation to determine the property value. If the value is not sufficient, an appraisal will be required at
your expense with the estimated cost varying from $500 to $1,500 depending on the property. When an initial draw of a minimum $25,000 or more new monies is advanced at opening, certain third party fees may be waived (fees
waived include valuation assessment, title insurance, recordation, credit report and flood certification/tracking) when you agree to maintain the account balance less normal minimum monthly payments for a period of six-months
from opening. Hawaii properties must be fee simple and owner occupied to qualify. Maximum loan amount is lesser of $200,000 or up to 80% of your home value. Higher LTV programs are available with price adjustments. HELOC
has a five-year draw period with a 15-year amortized repayment (principal and interest payment). Minimum monthly payment is $150. You must carry fire, hurricane & flood (if applicable) insurance on the property that secures the
credit at homeowners’ expense. No annual fee or prepayment penalty. HawaiiUSA FCU membership is required (minimum $5 share account). Program subject to change or discontinue without notice. Federally insured by NCUA.

Ask an Expert… Erin Rodriguez
Owner of Pearl City Auto Works
25 Years in Business
What is a check engine light? The check
engine/service soon light in the instrument
panel is a warning icon to inform you that
your vehicle has an issue.
How does a check engine light get checked?
You will need to retrieve the code(s) from the
computer in the vehicle through a port. After
the code(s) get retrieved, a certified repair
shop will have to diagnose what is causing this
code(s) to record and turn the light on.
How much does the diagnosis cost? Here at
Pearl City Auto Works, we charge by the hour.
Usually most repair facilities charge a flat rate,
whether it takes 15 minutes to an hour. We
try to be as fair as possible, so we will charge
the time it takes to diagnose.
How important is it to check if the light
comes on? You should have the code(s)
retrieved at the least to make sure that you
will not get stranded. If the code(s) are not
causing driveability problems then diagnosing
the light is not urgent. The negative side to
this is that the light will probably stay on and
you will not know if you are having additional
issues because the light is already on.
What if the check engine light is blinking?
You will need to bring your vehicle into a
repair facility as soon as possible because
a blinking light is warning you that you are
having driveability issues.
We take the worry out of keeping your
vehicle moving on the road. We welcome your
business!

Safety
Back to School
Safety Tips
August marks the start of another school
year and reminds us of all the preparation
required to ensure that students start the
school year off on the right foot.
Whether we have a student in our household
or not, everyone is affected somehow with
the “back to school” jam through increased
traffic, work schedule adjustments or dealing
with additional pedestrians on the roadway.
This is a good time to remind everyone of
some basic back to school safety tips which
will help get us through this hectic time of the
year.
Students
Walking to School:
• Walk in a group to increase visibility
to drivers.
• Cross at an intersection.
• Look both ways before crossing
the street, even at an intersection
controlled by a “WALK” signal.
• Avoid entering the roadway from
between parked cars.
• Minimize horseplay or running close
to the roadway to minimize driver
distraction.
Riding your bicycle:
• Wear a bicycle helmet (Hawaii Revised
Statute 291C-150 requires all persons
under the age of sixteen to wear a
properly fitted and fastened bicycle
helmet when on a street, bikeway, or
any other public property).
• Ride with the flow of traffic along the
curb in a single file line and be familiar
with the rules of the road.
• Come to a complete stop and wait for
a driver’s signal before crossing the
street.
• Wear bright colors during the day or
reflective material at night to increase
visibility.
Riding the bus:
• Stay away from the curb as the bus
approaches.
• When crossing in front of a bus, make
sure that the bus driver can see you.
The height of the bus makes it difficult
for the driver to see you so make sure
that you are far enough away from the
front of the bus to increase visibility.
• Do not distract the bus driver with
excessive noise or movement.
•
•
•
area if its visual signals are actuated
(regardless of direction of travel).
If the road is divided (e.g. Meheula
Parkway), the requirement to stop
applies to all vehicles travelling in the
same direction as the school bus.
Make eye contact with pedestrians
and use hand gestures to allow
pedestrians to cross.
Increase awareness and minimize
distractions as you approach a school
•
•
in the
Community
area or a group of pedestrians.
Make sure that your vehicle is well
maintained to minimize the potential
for breakdowns during increased
traffic delays.
Allow yourself some extra time to
get to your destination during peak
hours (before/after school or work)
or avoid travelling during these times
if possible.

STREET PARKING
The Mililani Town Association receives
numerous complaints concerning people
parking in No Parking zones throughout the
community.
All of the streets within the Mililani
community, with the exception of some of
the roadways within a particular townhouse
complex or patio home sub division, are the
jurisdiction of the City & County of Honolulu.
As such these streets are maintained and
controlled by the City and County. The
Mililani Town Association has no authority
or jurisdiction over any of these streets.
Homeowners and residents who are
experiencing difficulty with chronic violators
of City and County restrictions should contact
HPD to report specific instances. Residents
can also call the following phone numbers to
address specific issues directly:
Parking Violations
Abandoned Vehicles
City Complaint Line

733-2530
768-4381
You can also report problems online with
the City at http://www.honolulu.gov/csd/

Do You Know
The Covenants Specialists receive many calls
about dog and cat messes left in someone’s yard,
on the ground, along sidewalks, bagged and left
in the gutters, on the street, hanging on trees or
bushes waiting for someone else to dispose of it.
We are asking residents to assist us to help solve
this everyday occurrence. We could remind
everyone about the City & County Ordinance
but instead we are asking pet owners and/or
caregivers to simply do their part.
Please clean up, bag, and remove your pet’s
droppings, for the benefit of the common area
landscapers as well as for every single person
who lives in Mililani. If you are a cat owner,
consider leaving a litter box in your backyard
for your cat to use.

In an effort to be proactive with our
homeowners, MTA wants to inform
everyone of the areas that are being
inspected each month. The areas
highlighted on this map are the areas
scheduled for routine Covenant inspections
this month.
We hope to reduce the amount of violation
letters we have to send out by giving you
advanced notice of where we will be. We
are not trying to do our inspections in
secret. If you have any questions, please
feel free to ask. We are very friendly and
very willing to talk to you.

date is set for each 2-month session. Payment

Levels:
• Pre-school: Participants meet with an

as submersion, and are introduced to
freestyle. Participants must be 2½-5
years old.

introduction to freestyle and backstroke.
Classes are 30 minutes long. Participants

backstroke, including arm movement,
kicking, body position, and breathing/
timing. Classes are 45 minutes long.
• Level 3 - Stroke Readiness: Participants
learn to master freestyle and backstroke
and learn the fundamentals of
elementary backstroke. Level 3 classes
may be held in deep water, so participants
must be comfortable swimming 10
meters without assistance. Classes are
45 minutes long.

of breaststroke and sidestroke. Classes
are 45 minutes long.
• Level 5 - Stroke Refinement: Participants

will continue to refine all strokes and
build their endurance with flip turns.
