The Jimmy Stewart Museum
Indiana is proud to be known as the hometown of Hollywood actor Jimmy Stewart.
Located at 835 Philadelphia Street, the Jimmy Stewart Museum was opened in 1995
to honor the prestigious life of Jimmy Stewart. Highlighting his military, movie, TV,
radio, theater career and personal life, the Museum offers hands-on exhibits. Visitors
to the Museum can see artifacts from his days in Hollywood as they examine original
movie posters, costumes, scripts, photos and more. Jimmy personally selected some
items for display in the Museum including, a Winchester commemorative rifle and
propeller blade autographed by the cast and crew of “Flight of the Phoenix”.
James Maitland Stewart was born in his parents’ home on Philadelphia Street in Indiana
in 1908. When Jimmy was five, his parents built a house atop “Vinegar Hill”. While
Jimmy Stewart’s boyhood home is no longer owned by the Stewart family, visitors can
drive by the residence, located at 104 North 7th Street in Indiana, to sneak a peek at this
piece of history.
His father owned a local hardware store, the J.M. Stewart & Co., which was located at
800 Philadelphia Street in Indiana. Visitors can walk the streets of Indiana just as Jimmy
did when he lived here. Be sure to stop by this section of Philadelphia Street where a
commemorative sign denotes the location of the original hardware store. At the 9th
and 7th street crosswalk areas, you will hear Rich Little’s voice, as Jimmy, direct you
safely across the street.
The Stewart family were members of the Calvary Presbyterian Church of Indiana. Inside
the church, a plaque symbolizes the pew that the Stewart family commonly
occupied on Sunday mornings.
While in the area, visitors can take their photo with a statue of Jimmy Stewart, located
in front of the Indiana Courthouse on Philadelphia Street. The statue was unveiled in
1983 in celebration of Stewart’s 75th birthday.
Available for your enjoyment, Stewart’s films can be viewed in a cozy and quaint
1930’s vintage movie theater, complete with velvet drapes. The theater features
a state-of-the-art sound and projection system donated by Universal City Studios of
Hollywood.
Complete your trip to the Museum with the purchase of a special Stewart and
Indiana souvenir from the Gift Shop.

Smicksburg Amish Community
Located in the northwestern portion of Indiana County is the quaint Amish community
of Smicksburg. Encompassed by beautiful country scenery and rolling farmlands,
this area provides the ideal retreat for those seeking a break from the pressures and
demands of modern times.
Home to over 325 Old Order Amish families, this area provides a peaceful and relaxing
environment, ideal for a memorable getaway. Traveling through the Smicksburg
area often means sharing the road with horse-drawn buggies. Notice the grooves
in pavement, evidence of the multiple trips taken each day by area Amish residents.
Driving along, see teams of horses plowing the fields, children playing in the yard of a
one-room schoolhouse and laundry hanging on the line, drying in the breeze.
Within the Smicksburg area, there are more than 20 specialty shops offering Amish
crafts, quilts, handmade wreaths and centerpieces, hand-crafted furniture and pottery,
as well as a wide variety of food, candy and fudge. While most specialty shops are
English owned, many hand-crafted Amish items are available to purchase. Amish-owned
stores offer shoe repair, bulk foods, wood crafts plus much more.
Highlights for shopping include: Country Cupboard, Downtown Smicksburg Amish
Country, The Drying Shed, The Sampler and Little Mahoning Creek Pottery. A local
group, entitled Smicksburg Specialty Shops, is comprised of area businesses and
promotes the region while also hosting special events throughout the year.
Each shop has varied hours and please note that Amish-owned businesses are not open
on Sunday. Visitors are encouraged to call ahead to verify business hours and check for
seasonal festivals that are held year-round.
Take a break from shopping and enjoy a bite to eat at Thee Village Eatinghouse or
Country Junction Restaurant. Both locations provide delicious, home-cooked meals sure
to please every palate. For those planning their visit in advance, make reservations at
the Amish Wedding Feast for a traditional hearty meal. Hear a narration of the history
of an Amish Wedding while dining on traditional Amish foods.
Also in the area is Smicksburg Community Cheese Factory. In addition to the homemade
specialty cheeses made on-site with locally provided milk, over 89 additional varieties of
cheese are available.
Nearby, the Windgate Guest House offers quiet and secluded lodging and is located by
the largest estate winery in Southwestern Pennsylvania, Windgate Vineyards & Winery.
Bottling over 9,000 gallons of wine every year, the winery hosts tours, wine tastings,
classes and other special events. Adjacent to the winery is Windgate Antiques and Art
Gallery, a place filled with unique treasures available for purchase.
A visit to the Smicksburg Amish area isn’t complete without a stop at the John G.
Schmick Heritage Center. Learn more about the history and heritage of this
fascinating region while touring the two levels of this museum.

History of Indiana County
Six area historical societies are dedicated to promoting their historic and cultural
components of towns within Indiana County. Learn more about specific areas with a
visit to each one, including: the Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana County,
the Historical Society of the Blairsville Area, Homer-Center Historical Society, Inc., the
John G. Schmick Heritage Center, Saltsburg Historical Society and the Strongstown
Homecoming & Historical Society.
Also a part of Indiana County’s history are covered bridges. While there were more than
48 covered bridges within the county, four bridges remain intact today. The remaining
bridges were constructed in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Harmon, Trusal, Kintersburg
and Thomas covered bridges are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
While Thomas Covered Bridge is the only covered bridge in Indiana County that remains
open to traffic, all four bridges are accessible for beautiful photography opportunities.
Enjoy a relaxing afternoon when taking the 36 mile round-trip scenic covered bridge
driving tour.
Additional areas of interest include the Monument at Cherry Tree, marking the corner
of a property purchase of Indian lands at the Treaty of Fort Stanwix at Rome, NY on
November 5, 1768.
The Buena Visita and Eliza Furnaces are two other interesting artifacts of local history.
The 30 foot high Buena Vista furnace used local iron ore, limestone and charcoal while
employing approximately 61 men and boys and using 30 horses and mules. Visitors can
view this site along the Blacklick Creek in Brush Valley Township, directly adjacent to the
Ghost Town Trail. The Eliza Furnace holds the unique distinction of being one of only a
few furnaces in the United States to still retain its original heat exchanger piping. See
this furnace, which employed over 90 people and used 45 mules, at the midpoint of
the Ghost Town Trail. This historic site also includes a picnic area and restroom
facilities.
The “Rest on Arms” statue, located in front of the Clark House on South Sixth
Street in Indiana, pays tribute to Indiana County Veterans of the Civil War.
The dedication of the statue on Veteran’s Day 2013 coincided with the 150th
Anniversary of the Civil War.
Another key aspect of Indiana County’s history includes the Underground Railroad.
Sixteen miles south of Indiana, the Blairsville area was a major route for the
Underground Railroad during the early 1800’s. The Blairsville Underground
Railroad Museum depicts hands-on exhibits that take you through “A Day in the
Life of an Enslaved Child”.
