BREWSTER 2012 This year’s Best of Brewster magazine is dedicated to a favorite natural resource: our beaches! Table of Contents Do you remember the excitement you felt as you got ready for the first beach-trip of the summer? Tom Stringe’s cover art – titled Almost There – conjures up those memories. Gathering up the towels and toys; packing the cooler with a day’s supply of sandwiches; stuffing everything into the station wagon; and then finally heading down the road. Can you hear your Dad saying it? “We’re almost there!” Entertainment ................................................... 3 Brewster Chamber of Commerce Leader’s Circle ................................................. 5 2012 Calendar of Events ........................... 6 – 7 Shopping.............................................................. 9 Beach Information . .........................................11 Food...................................................................12 Shellfishing & Fishing .....................................14 Map of Brewster ..................................... 16 – 17 Business Directory ................................. 18 – 20 Services ............................................................ 21 Lodging . .......................................................... 26 Tide Chart: June – September 2012 ............... 28 Real Estate ....................................................... 29 Town of Brewster Basics .................................. 29 Important Phone Numbers ........................... 30 List of Advertisers ............................................. 31 Brewster is bordered on the north by Cape Cod Bay and our saltwater beaches are one of the most popular destinations in town. Each public beach is named for the road that leads to it, making them easy to find. And twice a day (almost) the Brewster Flats beckon young and old to explore the tidal pools and mudflats that are exposed as Cape Cod Bay recedes. Then there are the fresh water beaches at Brewster’s ponds. Here you can swim, canoe or kayak, go fishing from the shore or boat, or just relax under the canopy of trees surrounding their shores. And when you’ve had enough of the beaches for the day, Brewster has much more to offer. In these pages, you’ll find information about attractions, shopping, food, services, lodging and real estate, as well as general information about the Town of Brewster. Whether you’re here for the day, the week or year-round, we know you’ll find the Best of Brewster! BrewsterChamber:Layout 1 2/17/12 2:07 PM Page 1 Brewster Baseball . . . Go for it! The Factory Village produced goods such as shoes, furniture and fabric. The present Grist Mill was built in 1873 on the foundation of an old fulling and woolen mill. Water flowing over the water wheel creates power to grind corn between giant millstones. The town bought the mill and surrounding area in 1940. After recent years of refurbishment the museum is open and the mill is grinding corn again. Open Sat 10am-2pm, late June-August. The Herring Run’s paths are a great place to observe the alewives’ awe inspiring journey up the fish ladders. The Run is considered a Cape Cod classic. Since then, entrepreneurs have been hanging their shingle here, meeting the needs of the local community. Today, Brewster is the ‘professional hub’ of the Lower Cape, home to all types of engi- neers, dentists, architects, massage therapists, construction and trade specialists, chefs and fine artists to name a few. These types of businesses fit nicely into the rural environment and they provide local residents with jobs that pay well. The owners and managers are involved in the community and volunteer on Town committees, with local public charities, and to present local events that help to bolster our tourism economy. The next time you’re looking for a service – for your home, for yourself or for your business - remember that your chamber of commerce is better than the Yellow Pages because we know our members! The Stony Brook Gristmill and Higgins Farm Windmill are featured in the Brewster Chamber of Commerce logo, honoring the long history of business in town. Logo designed by Amy Mason, Stony Brook Design. Join Brewster Association of Part-Time Residents. Brewster’s Full-Time Voice for Part-Time Residents. We represent more than 800 families who own more than half of Brewster’s residential real estate. Founded in 2002, BAPR works side-by-side with our year-round neighbors,Town of Brewster Selectmen, and other officials to build awareness and understanding of important issues affecting part-time and full-time town property owners— taxes, insurance, town budgets, conservation policies, zoning/planning and more. We support and contributes to important initiatives in Town, such as the emergency heating fund and the placement of potentially life-saving defibrillators in public buildings by the Fire Dept. We also support local non-profits that create and improve the quality of life we all enjoy in Brewster, such as the Crosby Mansion, the Meeting House restoration and, of course, the Brewster Whitecaps. These are generally open from late Spring through the Fall until it’s too cold! Crosby Mansion Evidence of Brewster’s sea captain forefathers is seen all over town as many of their homes are now inns and bed and breakfasts where visitors can experience the elegance of another era. Crosby Mansion is one such home, now owned and maintained by the Town of Brewster as a living history tribute to the past. Located off Main St. (Rte. 6A) on Crosby Lane in East Brewster, the elegant grounds are open to the public for walking all summer, and the mansion is open with guided tours during open houses held in July and August – visit www.Brewster-CapeCod.com for dates. The mansion overlooks Cape Cod Bay, with architecture featuring a fanciful collection of turrets, towers and columns. Built in 1887 by entrepreneur Albert Crosby, the building is full of wonderful details inside and out. It’s interesting to note that the mansion was actually built around Mr. Crosby’s grandparents’ original Cape Cod homestead, and a small door inside connects the two buildings.
