TIMBUKTU
Founded in1100 A.O. Timbuktu Is a city in the republic of Mali, on the southern edge of the Sahara
Desert. The oasis became an integral part of the Trans-Sahara Caravan trade route, and a rich
center of Islamic culture and learning. Traders who endured the perilous journey would often return
home with incredible tales of the vast wealth and cultural diversity that flourished in Timbuktu.
Though it has thrived for centuries, Timbuktu remains so remote that with the exception of a small
emergency landing strip, the only access to the city is by camel.
Much like the ancient city, Timbuktu Restaurant was an isolated outpost at first; established when
the area surrounding Baltimore-Washington International Airport was largely undeveloped. As
word spread of Timbuktu's exceptional service, extensive beverage selections, and award winning
Crab Cakes the restaurant became a preferred dining destination for long-distance travelers and
local patrons alike.
