The story is about freedom of the spirit, not the political systems. It’s about a woman coming of age. It’s about war, religion and God. It’s about Oliver Twist. Through music, tears and great comic timing this story can’t leave you untouched. …what a woman. What a story. Shakespeare could not have told it better. ***** - Edfringe Amnesty International and Writer’s Guild Awards nominee. *€15/12 conc. 1 glór friends Saturday 30 September 8pm Morwax Productions present Monday 2 – Saturday 21 October Local, Local These artworks are defined by an intimate local knowledge of a rural place or site; a knowledge that goes deeper than the surface of the landscape and instead tells us something of the intersections of nature, culture, history, and ideology that form the ground on which we stand. We witness the divergent lives of Jack, recently turfed out by yet another woman, and Simon, who is about to settle down for the first time. Jack is scruffy, disorganised and still dreaming of the great showbiz success. Simon, an accountant, has everything in perfect order. The last thing Simon needs is a scruffy brother invading his minimalist apartment in his last week as a bachelor. The last thing Jack needs is a brother based in ‘reality’ poking holes in the dreams he has lived on for years... You will laugh and cry throughout! *€15/12 conc. Her remarkable life began in a tiny Russian village, took her to Warsaw’s ghettos and a ship called ‘The Exodus’ and finally to the boardwalks of Atlantic City, the Arizona canyons and salsa-flavoured nights in Miami Beach. Fiona York returns to the stage for this remarkable and moving one-woman show that has played to audiences internationally. Bruno is a 20-year-old happily living a hand-to-mouth existence funded by goods stolen by the schoolkids in his gang and by benefits paid out to his 18-year-old girlfriend. Though almost as reckless as Bruno, she’s unprepared for his cavalier attitude towards parenthood: unbeknownst to her, he arranges, in return for easy money, for the baby to be illegally adopted... The Dardennes’ provide a wonderfully evocative account of life on the streets: their astute, detailed observations served by performances of enormous subtlety and conviction. €7 (includes tea/coffee) glór friends: 2 for 1 glór gallery Monday 4 – Saturday 23 September Clare Arts Office in association with glór present Leabhar Mór na Gaeilge Leabhar Mór - The Great Book is a major contemporary artwork, a 21st century ‘Book of Kells’, that brings together the work of more than 200 visual artists, poets and calligraphers from Scotland and Ireland. And what happens when that same man, twenty years later, walks back? Written in 1964, The Year of the Hiker marked a significant departure for Keane. Set in the sixties and shot through with yearning and regret for lost love, Hiker contains some of Keane’s most lyrical and tender writing. On production the play immediately gained a major place in the Keane canon and has been produced almost continuously in Ireland over the last forty years. This production, the last in the Druid Keane Trilogy, follows Druid’s award-winning productions of Sive (2002) and Sharon’s Grave (2003). Not to be missed. And so thirteen members of four generations of the same family cram into the back of an old camper van and set off. In this confined space, emotions start to ride high and old grudges and jealousies start bubbling to the surface. Familia Rodante is excruciating and hilarious in equal measure in its raw depiction of family politics. One of the revelations of the new century. - La Monde €7 (includes tea/coffee) glór friends: 2 for 1 Sunday 22 October 8pm Le Grand Voyage Directed by Ismaël Ferroukhi, France / Morocco, 2004, 108 mins, PG Out of filial duty and a sense of adventure, Reda, a young French man, agrees to accompany his Moroccan father on the hajj - the pilgrimage to Mecca. The only catch: the journey from France to Saudi Arabia will be by car. Along the way the two cross national borders, seas, even continents, but no distance is greater than the one they cross to come to terms with each other. The filmmakers received rare permission to shoot the final scenes in Mecca and the images they capture are truly amazing. €7 (includes tea/coffee) glór friends: 2 for 1 Sunday 5 November 8pm Romance and Cigarettes Thursday 21 September 8pm Directed by John Turturro, USA, 2005, 105 mins, 16 Music Network presents Romance & Cigarettes is a dark and passionate comedy which tells the story of one man’s journey into infidelity and redemption. Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune glór friends: 2 for 1 €7 (includes tea/coffee) Sunday 17 September 8pm Grizzly Man Directed by Werner Herzog, USA, 2005, 103 mins, CLUB Herzog’s extraordinary documentary is an unforgettable examination of Timothy Treadwell, a recovering alcoholic who ditched his struggle as an actor to live in Alaska among grizzly bears, until he and his girlfriend were mauled and killed by one of the animals in 2003. For more than a decade, Treadwell immersed himself in the bears’ world: observing their interactions, seemingly befriending them and recording his adventures on videotape. Grizzly Man is a brilliant assemblage of this confessional footage with Herzog’s own investigation into Treadwell’s psyche. In a way Grizzly man is the ultimate nature documentary, it chronicles the nature of man as well as animals. David Denby, New Yorker glór friends: 2 for 1 €7 (includes tea/coffee) tar playing in Celtic music. Maighréad and Tríona come from one of the most renowned singing families of the Donegal Gaeltacht. She soon finds herself surveying not only the wreckage of their past together, but the emotional carnage of Josephson’s vituperative relationship with his son. Old-fashioned perhaps, self-conscious maybe, but this portrait of the pain apparently sensitive and intelligent individuals persist in inflicting on one another delivers a welcome fix of Scandinavian gloom in a surprisingly concentrated dose. €7 (includes tea/coffee) glór friends: 2 for 1 Sunday 1 October 8pm One Day in Europe Directed by Hannes Stöhr, Germany, 2004, 100 mins Four stories take place in different cities on the day of the Champions League final match between Galatasaray Istanbul and Deportivo La Coruña in Moscow.
