STAR VISION - SEPTEMBER 2014
president’s letter
Hello to all, Franchisees, CKE corporate
and Vendors.
It has been a year since we all met in
Kauai at our last SFA conference. I’m
looking forward to seeing all of you again
this year in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the
Hyatt Regency Gainey Ranch Resort
and Spa. It is always great to get together in a relaxed
atmosphere with other Franchisees, Corporate personnel
and Vendor/Partners. These conferences and relaxed
settings away from work allow us to renew or make new
friendships and breakdown the barriers our titles and
positions hold. I believe these conferences make us more
productive during the course of the year.
As the franchisee community grows, we want to continue
to make this conference enjoyable to all, to use it as a place
to build those friendships and to grow business for all that
attend. We are open to how we can make that happen. If it
is not working for you, let us know.
Another event we do as a community with partnership of
the Franchisees at Hardee’s, and both brands’ corporate
stores is Stars for Heroes. I am proud to announce that this
four-part team raised over a million dollars for the 2014
campaign. We have already started to disperse money to
our affiliated charities. More on this success will be shared
in the weeks to come.
This charity event shows what a spark of an idea and hard
work can produce. I was an SFA board member during a
simple conversation about us as a group giving back to our
communities, when the annual charity event was born. We
started with Pink Stars for Breast Cancer, which helped the
National Breast Cancer Foundation reach a new level over
6 years, at which they are still thriving today. Following
suit to what some Hardee’s franchisees have been doing
for years, we shifted focus in 2010 to Military Charities.
Our current program helps returning troops, families of
deployed troops and veterans. We have achieved our main
goal of that first conversation of giving back to the local
communities. Today, we have about 50% of all funds raised
being returned to the markets where the stores raised those
funds. I salute the Restaurant General Managers and teams
who made this happen!
The 4th quarter of the year is coming up shortly. I wish all of
you success in finishing this year in meeting your business
goals, more importantly, in spending special times with
your families. May next year be a special one for all.

STAR VISION - SEPTEMBER 2014
Franchisees, make sure to block out time to attend the SFA
Healthcare Seminar during the Scottsdale Conference on
Wednesday, October 1st – 10-Noon. Jenn Knoop Koblick, of
Filice Insurance, along with our own franchisee, Laura Raymer,
will present the current provisions & requirements of the ACA.
Don’t miss this chance to hear up-to-the minute information,
tailored specifically for our businesses. January 1, 2015 is
the next date when provisions go into effect. You must act
NOW to prepare. Come hear what you should do and what
you shouldn’t do, and garner some useful pointers. There are
specifics that differ for large vs. small employers. Topics to be
covered will include:
• Determine if your franchise is a large or a small employer
based on FT employees AND FT equivalents.
• Do you have more than one business? Controlled ownership
requires that hours worked by all employees in various entities
are combined to determine large/small employer.
• Does your medical plan provide Minimum Value Coverage?
• Will your company offer Affordable employee costs? (9.5%
of employee salary/wages)
• Can you offer multiple plans for different levels of
employees?
• Do you have to pay for your employees’ spouses/children?
• What are the penalties involved if you don’t offer a medical
plan?
• Employer Shared Responsibility - “Pay or Play” - models will
be presented to help you determine if your franchise should
“pay” the penalty or “play” by providing health care to all
employees working an average of 30 or more hours per week.
• Tips to determine your franchise plan - Measurement period,
Administrative period, and Stability(enrollment) period.
• How to roll out your 2015 benefit plan.
• What to do going forward for new hires and the next
measurement/admin/stability periods.
• Annual reporting - tracking all aspects of the plan including
dates of eligibility, coverage offered, enrollment, waivers, etc.
An Evening with Craig Shoemaker:
The Lovemaster
2014 conference
Tuesday Offsite Event
A Moroccan Evening at Los Cedros
Craig Shoemaker attended the 2003 SFA Conference
in Albuquerque. After becoming a dad (again) and
starting a new life with his new wife, Craig has created
an updated and relevant comedy show that guests will
enjoy.Don’t miss your last chance to see him before he
retires at the end of the year!
You might know Craig Shoemaker as the unmistakablyengaging, iconic, baritone-voiced character, The
Lovemaster. Maybe you were one of millions who saw him
in his decades of successful stand-up comedy. Or you may
have seen one of his specials aired on Showtime, HBO,
ABC, CBS, NBC and just about every other major network.
Perhaps you saw him in a TV show or movie like Parks &
Recreation, The Bold and The Beautiful, or in Scream 2?
Or maybe you just recognize his voice: Pleasantville, many
characters in numerous animated series, and all the voices
(and even the title song) for the BBC cartoon, Big Foot,
Little Foot.
But he’s far more than just The Lovemaster...
What you may not know (yet!) is that Craig Shoemaker is
dedicated to using laughter as a healing modality. Yep, the
Lovemaster is a peace-loving, new-age hippy dedicated
to using laughter to heal the world. Who knew? With his
retirement from stand-up comedy scheduled for the end of
2014, he’s now focusing his efforts on his new organization
dedicated to the cause, Laughter Heals. With a weekly
show, movie and book coming soon, Craig hopes that he
can bring The Laughter Movement to the mainstream.
Imagine yourself in Morocco 2500 years ago, visiting the king
in his throne room. Imagine Arabian stallions thundering
past you while the desert sunset paints the sky a magnificent
palette of red, orange, yellow and purple. The mystical allure
of an ancient, intriguing culture offers us an unforgettable
evening!
Los Cedros was built by a descendant of a Moroccan family to
be his North American Arabian Stallion training facility. It is
an engineering marvel. Not only beautiful, but functional as
well, it stables 95 horses virtually odor-free! Our conference
attendees will have the privilege of visiting this amazing place
built in the style of a Moroccan citadel. See an exact replica of
the throne room, imported from Morocco and reconstructed
here. Enjoy unlimited access to the odorless horse stalls, and
get up close and personal with the 4-legged residents of Los
Cedros.
During our reception in the lush courtyard, we will enjoy
cocktails & appetizers while watching a horse show with
riders in full regalia. Afterwards, feel free to wander through
the property, seeing one of the finest horse-training facilities
in the world. Don’t miss the equine therapeutic pool, the
treadmill, hot walkers, pristine stalls and even the breeding
room! We will then dine on a Moroccan feast in the 20,000
sq. ft. covered arena.
This unforgettable experience of two cultures will definitely
be the highlight of our 2014 SFA Conference in Scottsdale!
“Shoe,” as he’s often called, began his career in his
hometown of Philadelphia, where he honed his comedic
skills and characters while bartending and attending Temple
University (winning the “Best Comedian” award from Philly
Magazine). A natural storyteller with sharp observational
instincts, Craig’s performances are often based on the
hilarious -- and sometimes shocking -- twists and turns of
his own life.
Craig is happily married to his wife Mika and is a father
to three sons, Justin, Jared and Jackson, and brand new
daughter Chloe.

charity report
Because of the support CKE has provided over the past year,
USA Cares has been able to assist more than 2,211 military
families in need. Here are a few examples of those families
that have been helped.
Case 28737, Job Assistance Program, New Hampshire
Husband and wife are both active service members of the
Army National Guard, both on drilling status. Wife serves as
a Logistics Tech and has not served any deployments; she is
a full-time student working on her degree for Information
Computer Science. Husband recently returned home from his
deployment to Afghanistan in February 2014 and is working
at his previous job, making $4.00 LESS an hour than before he
left for his deployment. Because of the reduction of pay, they
were in a financial hardship. The Wife was recently hired with
Pinkham Realty as an Administrator, making $14.00hr. The
family was in great need while they were waiting on her first
paycheck. USA Cares Job Assistance helped the family with
their transition, assisting with their auto payment.
From Client:
“Hi Rosetta, Thank you so much for your help with this. My
Husband & I really appreciate it. This may not seem like a lot,
but it really is to us right now. We used the paperwork and
resources you provided to create a budget with our income
to be and set goals and bill pay reminders to catch up and
hopefully get back on track after the many hiccups since the
deployment.
Again, thank you for everything- Ms. Wrigley”

A Boat Ride to Remember
Ninety-three-year-old Robert of Santa
Barbara, California, prefers to be called
“Captain Bob.” The U.S. Army veteran, who has spent the majority of his
life selling, working and living on boats,
says he has “saltwater running through
my veins.” Recently however, Captain Bob has been residing
in an assisted-living facility, and coupled with his terminal
chronic airway obstruction, no longer enjoys the same freedoms he once did.
Captain Bob came to Dream Foundation with a dream to get
back out at sea. He longed to be on a boat again and enjoy the
wind on his face. A crew of 10 welcomed him and his family
aboard Taxi Dancer, where - with one hand firmly on the rope
and the other in his granddaughter’s hand - he clearly felt right
at home. “He was in total joy, literally howling,” Captain Bob’s
granddaughter said. “It was so much fun for him. I feel like
he’s going to carry that memory with him for the rest of his
life.”
Thank you Carl’s Jr. Franchisees for providing final dreams
and lasting memories for deserving veterans like Captain Bob!
Dream Foundation Executive Director, Kisa Heyer, says, “We
are incredibly grateful for the support of the Carl’s Jr. Franchisees, your teams of employees and loyal customers who opened
your hearts and gave so generously to Stars for Heroes this
year. Your efforts allow us the privilege to continue serving our
nation’s heroes at the end of their lives, and we can’t thank you
enough for your commitment and compassion.”
Stars for Heroes is making a difference
in the lives of Veterans through the
Stand Up and Play Foundation
“I was paralyzed in Afghanistan when
a 250lb IED blew up my truck. Since
I’m wheelchair bound, regular activities have been a struggle for me as
well as outdoor activities. There were
a lot of things that I thought I couldn’t
do anymore outside. All of that
changed when I met Anthony Netto,
and he got me into a Paragolfer. That
machine changed my life as well as my
family’s lives. I use it for everything
now. I play outside with my kids, go to the range, walk my
kids to school, walk the dogs, go to the beach, I’m involved
with my sons football practice, I use it when I take my service
dog to training, take my kids for rides on the back of it, play
sports with my kids and their friends, go for walks with my
wife (Hillary Wayman) and the list goes on. I don’t know what
I would do without the Paragolfer. It puts a smile on my face
every time I open my garage and see it. I tell everyone else I
see about it, who was injured in the military, with mobility
issues. Semper Fi- Jarrod W”

Tournament Recap
The 10th Annual Carl’s Jr. Franchise Golf Classic was held
on April 30th at The Pacific Palms at Industry Hills in the
Los Angeles area with over 80 golfers in attendance. HED
kicked off their annual Tuesday Tune-Up Tournament at
Industry Hills. HED is a fantastic sponsor! All of the golfers
enjoyed beautiful Southern California weather (albeit a
little windy!), two great courses, and, of course, a lot of
fun and interaction with each other---all for a great cause!
This tournament supports our “Stars for Heroes”
campaign, a venture between the Carl’s Jr. & Hardee’s
Franchisees and CKE Corporate, to raise monies for
military charities. At the tournament dinner we all were
privileged to hear Emily Wheatley, from “The Dream
Foundation,” an organization that aids military and
veteran families have a dream-wish granted. Also who
spoke was Cindy Good, board member for “USA Cares,” a
wonderful organization that supports military families in
a variety of ways and depends 100% on private funding.
Both of these groups will benefit from the funds raised
at the tournament and through our in-store promotion,
which took place May/June 2014.
Sponsorships from Vendors, Franchisees, and CKE played
a key role in helping the tournament raise over $70,000
for “Stars for Heroes.” Special thanks to KDM for stepping
up with donations of all printed materials for both the
tournament and in-store promotion.
Please mark your calendars now---NEW DATE!!---Due to
the bi-annual CKE Conference landing on the normal
tournament date, the 2015 tournament will be held again
at Industry Hills Golf Club on March 3-4, 2015.

franchisee spotlight
Franchisees keeping it in the family
These four new franchisees are no strangers to the Carl’s Jr. brand.
Kelly and Carl J. Karcher
Bryce Olson
Kelly Karcher is Vice President of CLK and operating partner
of CLK New-Star, LP and CLK Desert Star, LP.
I started in the Carl’s Jr. business 10 years ago from the
bottom as a cashier. I worked my way up through the ranks
while racing motorcycles professionally and going to school
studying Kinesiology science and Anatomy. I had hoped
to one day become a doctor. But after learning more of
the business as I promoted through the ranks, I became
more intrigued with the business, management, marketing
and mainly the operations. I graduated with Honors on
my Associates of Science and transferred to San Diego
State University where I switched my major to Operations
Management with an emphasis in Management, Operational
Logistics and International Marketing. I graduated with
my Bachelors Degree and quickly took over Operations of
the 6-store Carl’s Jr. franchise in Sacramento. I have since
been running full operations for the franchise, successfully
completing all of the Carl’s Jr. Corporate training courses
and winning the Founder’s Award in 2012, all while working
towards my dream of becoming a franchisee and expanding
our locations. I love the business and love what I do, and
that’s why I am excited to be an official part of the team!
After receiving a Bachelors of Arts in International Studies,
a Masters of Arts in Social Justice, and extensive travel and
community service in China, Poland, Bolivia and Mexico,
Kelly was persuaded to return to the family business. She
joined a company, CLK/Carl’s Jr. where her interests and
family history merged and where skills learned from her
travels and experiences are helping CLK achieve its goals.
Kelly has been with CLK for 7 years now---although it seems
like a lot longer when you only eat Carl’s Jr. food growing up!
Carl J. Karcher is District Manager for CLK and Operating
Partner for CLK New-Star, LP and currently lives in El Paso,
Texas. Carl was not immediately drawn to the Carl’s Jr.
business (even though with a name like Carl Karcher, how
could you not be?!). After traveling the US and pursuing
different interests, he found his calling in the burger business.
Carl has been part of CLK for 5 years and has been operating
the restaurants in El Paso, TX for the past 2 years.
Austin Raymer
My name is Austin Raymer, and I have been around CKE for
the bulk of my life. I started unofficially working at Carl’s Jr.
when I was about 10 years old. I would go in with my dad once
in a while and peel potatoes and deliver the food to customers.
Money wasn’t the reason I would go help out; it was the ability
to make my own personalized Western Bacon Cheeseburgers!
It was the coolest thing in the world to me at the time. After
schooling and various jobs in the food industry, I started
working for the company in 2005 as a cashier. I worked my
way through the ranks and became a GM as we were opening
our new restaurant in Brentwood - the store I would later be
invested in. I hired and trained most of the employees and
quickly learned how much work goes into running a store. A
few years later I was promoted to DM for our 4 locations in the
Bay Area. After many talks and helpful advice from my father,
my wife and I decided to start investing into Carl’s. Thankfully,
we were able to buy into Brentwood Star LLC, last year and
plan to continue to do so. I grew up looking up to my dad and
idolizing his ambition to own a business and grow it to what it
is today. We aspire to have similar success. We are extremely
excited to be a part of the franchise community and look
forward to building relationships with everyone associated with
CKE.

How Build-to-Suits Can Help Grow Your Business
At a recent real estate conference I heard a panelist refer to
build-to-suit development as “improve-to-suit.” Just more
jargon? Actually, I think he was on to something. A build-tosuit development program, when appropriately used, “improves”
the operations of a company by helping it expand quickly while
passing off the burden of real estate development and ownership
to a qualified third party. What does this mean for a Carl’s Jr.©
operator? It means you can open more new stores (three new
locations can be opened using a build-to-suit program for every
one developed, using your own money) and focus on your core
objective: running successful restaurants.
What exactly is a Carl’s Jr.© build-to-suit, and why is it good
for your business?
A Carl’s Jr.© build-to-suit is a real estate transaction whereby
a developer constructs or converts a building into a Carl’s
Jr.© restaurant on behalf of a specific operator and then leases
the restaurant back to that operator upon completion. The
developer takes on the performance and financial risk related to
construction (oftentimes paying 100% of the real estate costs)
and in most instances is also the landlord, meaning they own the
land and new building. Most importantly, developers manage
the core aspects of the restaurant development process, including
land acquisition, permitting, hiring contractors and overseeing
all construction-related activities so you don’t have to (i.e.
the headaches - remember the last time you remodeled your
house?). You will find many build-to-suit programs described
as “turnkey.” This means that when the developer hands over
the keys, they are delivering a fully-completed restaurant that
is customized to meet the operator’s specific needs. Everything
down to furniture, fixtures and equipment (“FF&E”) installation
can be handled by the developer. So what’s left for the Carl’s
Jr.© operator to do? Cover the cost of the FF&E, comply with
franchisor requirements, execute a lease…and run the restaurant!
Partner with the right development team.
Build-to-suit development is all about client service. Newlyconstructed or converted Carl’s Jr.© restaurants should be
delivered to the operator on time and on budget. A well-qualified
Carl’s Jr.© build-to-suit development team should take the
mystery out of new store development for an operator and
serve as a trusted resource for all real estate-related matters.
Ultimately, you should partner with developers who are looking
to form a long-lasting, multi-unit relationship and have a proven
track record of understanding the franchise and real estate
industries. Avoid those who are looking to make a quick buck on
a one-off deal.

Capital, the preferred developer for Paradigm Investment Group,
