BYU College of Nursing Celebrates
50 Years
The BYU College of Nursing celebrated its 50th
anniversary on October 17, 18, and 19. Packed
with fun and interesting activities, the
celebration was a complete success.
The conference began with President
Bateman giving an in-depth look at the painting
"Christ Healing at Bethesda," a gift to the College
by the Alumni Association. That was followed by
a number of different presentations including a
distinguished panel, honored alumna Sandra
Rogers, Dean Marshall, a fashion show (that sent
many rolling in the aisles), and a video walk
through the history of the College of
Nursing. Vending and recruiting booths were
also present throughout the conference. (Don't
forget to buy your new BYU Nursing t-shirt!)
At the Alumni luncheon, Intermountain Health
Care awarded the College an impressive gift of
$50,000. They expressed their thanks to the
College, faculty, and students for our wonderful
work and service.
Finally, the weekend was capped by the
CoN/SNA float winning the Dean’s Award for
best college float at the homecoming parade!

BYU College of Nursing Choir
The BYU College of Nursing choir for the 50th
Anniversary Celebration was truly an inspiration!
The new verses written by Susan Evans McCloud
definitely captured the spirit of nursing. Through
many early morning practices, the choir was
able to learn the piece and present it with the
Spirit at the celebration. We would like to thank
all those who participated in the choir and

Favorite Faculty Spotlight
This year’s winners of the students’ favorite teacher voting were
Carol Lavender and Paul Blad. Most of us have had the wonderful opportunity
of attending a class taught by them. Some of us, including myself, have also had
clinical with them and have been able to get to know them a little better. For
those of you who don’t know them as well, let me give a spill about them both.
Paul lives way down in Kanosh, a city of only 490 people. He is a husband and father of 7
children, 2 of which are currently serving missions with another on the way. He is very

Favorite Faculty Continued…
Paul loves coaching high school baseball and little league basketball and football. At
school, Paul applies the same principles of coaching as he teaches various peri-op classes
with BYU nursing, which he feels is his final step as a teacher. Paul feels that his roles as a
nurse and teacher, and all of the steps leading up to them, have greatly blessed his life. He
has no desire to do anything else. I took Paul’s peri-op class almost one year ago at LDS
Hospital. When we finished with his clinical rotation, I think all the students in our class wanted
to work in the emergency room. His love for this type of nursing flowed to all of us (Thanks!).
Carol Lavender, more commonly known as “The Purple Lady,” has come all the way from
Texas (the other great state) to bless our lives here in the college of nursing. She loves working
with geriatric populations and is always pushing the college to give more time to the geriatric
clinical component. Carol is also one of the faculty advisors for the BYU-SNA. Her enthusiasm
for SNA and her love for fun have brightened our association. She generously offers her time,
talents, and her home☺ to the students. Additionally, she helped the SNA make a good
amount of money at our last convention by selling sterling-silver jewelry that she made. Carol

Homecoming Parade
Thanks to all of those that
participated in the Homecoming
Parade and decorating the float.
On Oct. 18th BYU-SNA sponsored a
pizza and float decorating party at
Carol Lavender’s house. In keeping
with the theme of the 50th
Anniversary of the College of
Nursing, students dressed in nursing
uniforms from the early 1900’s to the
present, and cars were donated for
the parade from 1953 and 2002.
Thanks to Carol Lavender, we even
had students dressed as “injured”
patients to the give the crowd a
taste of what we do. We had so
much fun, partly due to the number
of people that turned out for the
On Thursday, November 21st we will be
having our Holiday Party. It is from 7-9
p.m. at Carol Lavender's house. Everyone
is invited (even if you are not a SNA
member), and significant others are also
invited. To get into the party you need to
bring either a canned food item or a
hygiene product. You will get extra door
prize tickets for bringing more items
(each item equals another ticket). SNA
will be providing a delicious dinner. The
dinner will be buffet style so you can
come and go as you please. We will also
have a couple of service projects set up
in Carol's house for people to work on
(quilt tying, putting Christmas ornaments
together…). We will also be selling the
new college tee shirts and jewelry at the
party so bring your money. Come enjoy a
free dinner and opportunity to mingle with
your fellow nursing friends and professors
in a non-school environment! Also, on
Monday, December 2nd we need people to
help decorate a Christmas tree for the
Festival of Trees. The decorating will
take place at South Towne Expo Center all
day on the 2nd. There is a sign up sheet
on the bulletin board in the NLC if you
would like to help do this service
project. All proceeds from the tree go to
Primary Children's Center.

Mentor of the Month
WE NEED YOUR INPUT! The faculty and administration of the college
would like to recognize nurses in your clinical sites that you found
to be especially helpful, caring, a good role model, an excellent
teacher or any other special quality you identified. Simply email your
suggestion and a short paragraph of why the nurse was special to Carol
Lavender or Joann Abegglen. The nurse will receive a gift and be
invited to a special luncheon. YOUR INPUT IS ESSENTIAL FOR
THIS RECOGNITION PROGRAM TO WORK!
NEW COLLEGE OF NURSING TEE
SHIRTS
This semester the Student Nurses'
Association has ordered new tee shirts.
Realizing that the majority of nursing
students are female, we decided to
order girly (fitted) tees as well as
our normal men's tees. The men's tshirts are navy, and the girly t-shirts
are white and come in two different
styles. All the shirts have the new
design and logo on them. The SNA sold
quite a few shirts at the 50th
Anniversary Conference and are
continuing to sell them. Contact David
Keller or any SNA member to buy one.
The shirts sell for $18; SNA members
can buy them for $15. Show your
nursing pride and buy a shirt! Heather
