Welcome
to the 2015
Kentucky Derby Festival
Welcome to the 2015 Kentucky Derby Festival! Springtime in
Louisville is like no other city anywhere. The excitement grows for weeks
as we anxiously anticipate two weeks chalked full of fun and activities
leading up to the first Saturday in May. From the launch of the first
firework at Thunder Over Louisville to the final performance at
Kroger's Fest-a-Ville, it is truly the best time of the year to be in this city.
Michael E. Berry
President and CEO
Kentucky Derby Festival, Inc.
Of course, much of the work of the Festival would not be possible
without the dedication and hard work of volunteers. From all around the
region, volunteers make their way here to be part of the grand spectacle.
In fact, it takes more than 4,000 individuals giving selflessly of their time,
energies and efforts to make the two-weeks of Festival a possibility. One
of the key organizations partnered with the Festival is The Fillies, Inc. – a
volunteer organization of 250 women who organize the Fillies Derby Ball,
the Princess Tea and the activities of the Royal Court. This group is also
proud to be presenting this publication – the 2015 Kentucky Derby Festival Official Program, the 46th annual edition.
Everyone has a story, and this year, we want to share ours. While we celebrate the 60th consecutive year of Festival, we also want to pay tribute
to an earlier, lesser-known Festival that took place from 1935-37. While it
is unlikely many will remember the details from a Festival that long ago,
we do dedicate a few pages to sharing some of those memories – not to
be forgotten.
As always, we wish you a safe, happy and fun Festival season! Remember,
the stories you tell happen here.

Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services
builds communities through volunteerism and
partnerships with nonprofit organizations to advance
driving safety, education and community life.
Ford Motor Company has been an integral part of the Louisville and
Kentuckiana community since beginning operations here in 1913.
Now, more than a century later, Ford Motor Company Fund and
Community Services is touching lives and lifting spirits in a way that
would have made the company’s founder proud.

PRINCESSES
Chosen each year as ambassadors for the Kentucky Derby
Festival, the Royal Court is made up of young women from
around the state. Selected from a pool of more than 100
applicants, these five women will attend nearly all of the
70-plus Derby Festival events starting with Festival Unveiled
and ending with the Pegasus Parade on April 30.
In addition, the Royal Court will make multiple
appearances at area schools and charity events to
discuss the importance of academics, volunteerism and
community involvement. One of these five will be named
the Derby Festival Queen with the traditional spin-of-thewheel at the Fillies Derby Ball on April 17.

In 2004, our daughter had
the privilege of being selected as
a Derby Festival Princess. After
attending many of the events that year,
I realized that I knew many of the
Fillies. This presented the opportunity
to become a member of an amazing
organization that works hard to support
the Derby Festival……while having a
great time!

Kentucky Derby Festival
A Festival Too Soon?
by Robert Hadley
Today's Kentucky Derby Festival, a monument
to the state's filial pride in the fastest two minutes in sports, has
grown exponentially since its 1956 launch.
Back then, the Derby Festival featured a parade complete with
floats, bands and dancing horses; black tie balls held at hotels; and
boxing and baseball.
According to a 1956 Courier-Journal article posted on the Festival's
website, this event was designed for a city that was “not the same
tired old town it used to be. Sick and tired of
being sick and tired, it has spruced up and is
yelling for nourishment."
with such extravaganzas as the Great Steamboat Race, BalloonFest,
Bed Races and the 70 or so other events starting as early as a month
before the actual Run for the Roses, and you get a sense of how
important the race -- and the festival -- are not only to Louisville and
to Kentucky but also to the world of sports.
The only trouble with this scenario, however, is that the Festival
didn't really start in 1956. Historical archives show that the Kentucky Derby Festival actually enjoyed a three-year run some two
decades prior to the 1956 relaunch.
According to KDF President & CEO Mike Berry,
between 1935 and 1937, under the direction of
then-Louisville Mayor Neville Miller, the city held
the first three annual Kentucky Derby Festivals. Each of these weeklong events boasted a
night-time parade; tennis, bowling and wrestling
matches; fireworks; a concert and formal ball;
and other festivities befitting a horse race of
renown.
“Another effort is being made to provide a
full week of fun for Kentucky Derby visitors,”
wrote Earl Ruby, former Courier-Journal
sports editor. “The first try was born a quarter century too soon, say fathers of the new
plan. This time the festival will succeed, they
promise.”
Contrast that to the 2015 festival, populated
Decal for the 1935 Kentucky Derby Festival.
There was even a Festival King and Queen,
determined by a ballot published in an area
newspaper, complete with a royal court of some

20 dukes and ladies.
Apparently, local businesses sponsored young men and women in the
competition, many of whom worked for the companies. For instance
in 1936, the KDF Queen and King were Jean Able and Russell J.
Leonard, respectively. Both 22 years old, they worked for Frankfort
Distillers, Able as a stenographer, Leonard as a statistician.
And although this Depression-era festival, held amid tough economic
times, with media limited to word of mouth, radio broadcast or newspaper publication, lacked 2015's computer-synchronized fireworks,
Facebook pages and other high-tech wizardry, the same key ingredients remained.
“Festival events are based on community,” Berry explained. “They're
about interaction, about fun -- all those watchwords we talk about
with the Festival give us much similarity between the Festival in 1935
and today.
“The essential ingredient is the same now as it was then -- tradition.
It's notable that if you look at this in 1935, there was some sort of
royalty. The Festival goes away after 1937, but when the Festival
relaunches in 1956, what is one of the first things they reinstitute?
Royalty. There's a queen beginning in 1957.”
Although scant records of those first three festivals exist (many historical artifacts documenting the 1935-37 era, such as brochures and
programs, were recovered
from yard sales,
antique stores
and on eBay), a
few things are
known about the
surrounding
circumstances.

Russell J. Leonard and Miss Jean Able, King and Queen of
the 1936 Kentucky Derby Festival.
Louisville Mayor Neville Miller, who led the city during the toughest
years of the Depression, was the first Democrat to hold the office in
15 years (outside of the six-month term Republican Joseph T. O'Neal
held in 1927).

Parade.
Miller, an attorney educated at Princeton and Harvard universities,
served as the first dean of the University of Louisville Law School in
1930. Time magazine states that Miller, who resigned as law school
dean in 1933 to become mayor, “staged a financial and governmental reorganization” after taking office.
It is speculated that the Festival could have been Miller's strategy for
bolstering community spirit during the Depression, as many events
provided affordable entertainment. Thus began the mission that
continues today of bringing the Derby to the masses regardless of
wealth or social standing.
“My belief is that he played into the picture because of strong leadership,” Berry said.
The downside to having a personally popular official spearhead a
movement such as the Festival is that the next mayor may have different priorities. That seems to be the case with the 1930s Festival,
which ceased when Miller's term ended late 1937.
“My guess is it was a Neville Miller thing,” Berry said. “From what
I can read from history, the Derby Festival, because it was coordinated out of the mayor's office, was very much associated with his
administration.
Derby King Orris Reynolds
and Derby Queen Ellen
Bentley are surrounded by

“You have the double whammy of the flood (in
January and February 1937), people are out of their
homes, city resources were having to be used to
clean up and get life back to the way it had been,
plus in 1937 you get a new mayor.”
1952, along with expansions and improvements to the facilities. Knebelkamp's tenure
saw the construction of Millionaires Row
and, according to Churchill Downs' website,
renovations topped $1 million.
These events, as well as America's involvement in
WWII four years later, conspired to put an end to
the Festival until the mid-1950s.
Think about the 1950s, the decade that saw
America emerge from WWII as a superpower ...
the Baby Boom in full swing ... the birth of rock
and roll. It was also a time when Churchill Downs
began a new marketing strategy.
Once the race had been nationally televised, it
started on the path to becoming the sporting
and tourism juggernaut it is today. Interest
in sponsorships and marketing tie-ins grew
among local businesses, eager to capitalize on
the Derby's goodwill and potential economic
gain, Berry explained.
The 1930s-era Festival happened before the
Kentucky Derby had achieved the worldwide
prominence it boasts today. While popular locally
(the ballots for the 1936 king and queen election
drew 344,000 ballots, roughly the city's population), if you weren't a racing fan and didn't live in
Louisville, the Derby might have been relegated to
a small mention in the newspapers or a line or two
spoken on the radio.
Berry explained that in the 1950s, the Derby itself
grew in stature, thanks to the efforts of track president Bill Corum, a former New York Times sports
columnist, and his successor, Wathen Knebelkamp.
Corum saw the first live telecast of the race in

It is no surprise that the rich tradition of
parades, royalty and fun rooted in the 1930s
sparked the Festival’s 1956 relaunch. One
thing was different: the parade in those early
days was held on Fourth Street, rather than a
few blocks south, as it is today. If you listen,
you can almost hear the fanfare of yesteryear,
as horse-drawn buggies bearing the Festival
king and queen, as well as colorful floats,
marched through the heart of the city, drawing thousands on the Friday evening before
Derby. Though it’s a far cry from today’s techdriven festivities, it’s a fitting image of the
proud tradition both eras of the Festival share.
The Kentucky Derby Festival lasts two weeks. Lucky for you,
Kentucky has enough fun for the whole year. To plan your
next adventure, race to KentuckyTourism.com.
We bet you’ll
be back.

So that leaves 27 cents from the dollar to go to one of the
Kentucky Lottery’s crowning achievement – funding college
scholarships and grants for our state’s best, brightest and
most-deserving students.
And since 1999, we’ve provided more than $2,200,000,000 to
help them pursue their dreams of higher education.
Fueling Imagination. Funding Education.
So when you spend $1 on a
Kentucky Lottery ticket, where’s
that money go?
The majority of the dollar – 62 cents – goes right back to players in
the form of prizes. Since 1989, more than $9,600,000,000 in prizes
have been paid.
About a nickel goes to the administration of the games so tickets
can be printed and the like, while another six cents goes to retailers
across the Commonwealth in the form of commissions for selling
our tickets.
All told, 569,542 students across the Commonwealth have
received a lottery-funded college scholarship or grant since FY99.
The awards are distributed by the Kentucky Higher Education
Assistance Authority (KHEAA).
Lottery revenue funds the need-based College Access Program

etty Southard Stokes’s (#124A) Postcards from Daniel is
now for sale at Carmichael’s, Celebrations, and online at
butlerbooks.com for $19.95. The Filson Historical Society’s
Curator of Special Collections, James Holmberg, has kindly
reviewed Postcards from Daniel for The Mellwoodian.
Famous frontiersman Daniel Boone wouldn’t have
intended his postcards home from the wilderness to teach young
and old about American history and life in pioneer Kentucky, but
they do – that is, if he had written them.
Boone didn’t, but retired educator Betty Stokes has
written them for him. With Postcards from Daniel, 1755-1784:
Daniel Boone Writes From the Kentucky Wilderness, Betty has
written yet another history lesson with a Kentucky focus for
young readers (and adult too!). Writing as if Daniel himself were
sending postcards to family, the reader learns about Boone’s life,
wilderness adventures, relationships with area American Indians,
and settling pioneer Kentucky.
Combined with Emry Quinn’s colorful illustrations
depicting scenes from Boone’s life, Postcards from Daniel is a
wonderful way to teach history in an engaging and easy manner.
Not to be forgotten are Betty’s two earlier postcard
books; Postcards from George and Postcards from William
chronicle the adventures of the famous Clark brothers in frontier
Kentucky (George) and on the Lewis and Clark Expedition
(William). They, too, are educational and engaging and an
excellent way to make learning history easy and enjoyable. All
three titles should be on young Kentuckians’ book shelves.

LOUISVILLE S
CULINARY SCENE IS COOKING!
And it’s catching the attention of people
all across the globe. CNN, Garden & Gun, Bon Appetit,
Saveur, Esquire, Southern Living and many others have taken notice
that the city is positioning itself as a foodie epicenter.
This year alone, Louisville racked up close to a dozen national accolades for being a culinary superstar.
Thrillist named Louisville one of the 7 Most Underrated Food Cities
and CNN dubbed the city one of 7 Up-and-Coming Foodie Destinations in America.
From greasy spoons to gastronomic temples, both ends of the
savory spectrum have attracted national recognition in magazines,
newspapers, blogs and television as writers and show hosts are
becoming increasingly aware of Louisville as a delicious dining
destination.
In 2014, Wagner’s Pharmacy was honored as one of the Best Breakfast Places in America by Esquire, and 610 Magnolia, Proof on Main,
Milkwood and Seviche were all included on Southern Living’s 100
Best Restaurants in the South list.
And the accolades kept coming… Louisville’s El Camino was named
one of 50 nominees for Bon Appetit’s Best New Restaurants in
2014, as well as one of The South’s Best Breakfast Joints by Garden
& Gun.
Because the city is home to more than 1,000 independently owned,
local restaurants, USA Today recently touted Louisville for being a
foodie favorite for having the second most locally-owned eateries in
the country.
From farm-to-table and modernist cuisine to country cooking, top
chefs and top shelf, Louisville has a lot to bring to the table.
But it’s not just our restaurants that are eating up the competition.
Several James Beard Award-nominated chefs call Louisville home,
including Ed Lee (610 Magnolia and Milkwood), Kathy Cary (Lilly’s)
and Anthony Lamas (Seviche).

But before you take a bite out of the Culinary Capital of Bourbon

For starters, a culinary adventure in this city isn’t complete without a
little bit of America’s native spirit. We are in Bourbon Country after
all. Because 1/3 of the world’s bourbon is made in Louisville, it’s only
natural our chefs enjoy adding a splash or two in their recipes.

If you’ve studied the Louisville restaurant scene at all, you’ve likely heard of the Hot
Brown. This cheesy, saucy, rich, sturdy, savory, hot and filling feat was created at
The Brown Hotel almost 90 years ago.
It’s a menu must-have at loads of local restaurants. Find the original at the J. Graham Café, The Lobby Bar and the English Grill at The Brown Hotel. Because this
dish is a Louisville staple, the Hot Brown Hop was recently launched.

GRIFF
Darrell Griffith made his first big appearance at the Kentucky Derby
Festival in 1976 as an All-Star for the Basketball Classic. Darrell, or better known around town as Griff, went on to lead the 1980 University of
Louisville Cardinals to their first NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.
This was all before he spent his NBA tenure with up and coming franchise,
the Utah Jazz. Griff recently sat down with us to talk about growing up in
the Derby Festival and what he’s been up to since his triumphant return to
Louisville.
You played in the Kentucky Derby Festival
Basketball Classic in 1976. Do you have
any memories from that game?
It was such a highlight for me. I had the
opportunity to play in my hometown in one of
the country’s most elite All-Star games. It was
something every aspiring basketball player would really
look forward to, and I got to live a dream.
You graduated from UofL. Do you have any thoughts
about the current team?
Yea, they’re driving me crazy! Haha. They have such a good
squad, they’ve just got to keep it together. I hope they make it
to the end. They definitely have a visible goal to strive for.
You went on to have great success with the Utah Jazz.
Was coming back to Louisville always the plan after you
retired from the NBA?
I actually never left! As soon as the season was done, I would
come home. I worked there, but Louisville was always home.
I played in 11 amazing seasons, until I started to have some
problems with my knee.
Was it hard to make the decision to call it a day?
It was a good decision, because I did it on my terms. I wasn’t going to
be 100% again, so I decided it was time to hang up my jersey. God was
good to me for 11 seasons. Anytime you’re on 1 team for 11 years, it’s a
blessing.
You’re very involved with the community, something you have in
common with us at the Festival. Why is the Louisville community so
important to you? And what does the Darrell Griffith Foundation
do to help the community?
Anytime I can make an impact on someone or something I try to. And fortunately I’m in a position where I can make a difference. If I see something
that needs help, I’m going to be there ready to help. The Darrell Griffith
Foundation helps assist local non-profits and community groups achieve
their goals -- When they have needs, we want to help them achieve their
goals.
Tell me about the Darrell Griffith Athletic Center. Why was it
important to you to associate with the West End School?
This school has a special place in my heart. It’s where I went to school. I
used to walk there every morning. There is a lot of rich history there, so
when I was asked to join the Board it was a no brainer for me.
The goal was to help students that were struggling get on grade level and

get prepared for college. Education is a top priority but we were missing the athletic
component. There always has to be an athletic component. There never was a great
gym facility, with the exception of a basket in the back auditorium. We wanted these
teams to have home games, because they spent a lot of time travelling for every
game in the season. At the end of the day it’s all about changing lives, and I know
we’re doing that.
And you’ve got a new restaurant! What’s the menu like at Griff’s?
Any plans to expand?
We opened up a couple of weeks ago, and it’s been great! We have a very broad
range of menu items -- chicken shrimp pasta, hamburgers, ribs…man, we’ve even
got catfish tacos. You have to try those! All of the food is fresh, and that’s what
makes the food so good. Expansion is always a possibility in the future, but for now
I’m concentrating on location number one.
What was it like the first time you saw your “Griff’s Louisville” sign?
It was an awesome experience for me, but I was even more excited for my parents.
It means a lot to know that my father got to see it before he passed away. He is
heavily responsible for all of my achievements and I’m incredibly grateful.
What is your favorite Kentucky Derby Festival memory?
I was at the first Thunder Over Louisville. It was probably the best one because no
one knew what to expect. We would also watch the Pegasus Parade as kids. We
would go and get some White Castles and sit on Broadway as the Parade went
by. And of course, playing in the Basketball Classic.
Of course the basketball game! On a final note, do you have advice for
any future players of the Basketball Classic?
Just to cherish each and every moment. Respect the All-Star games that you
play in. And ultimately, just enjoy it. You only get to play in these games once.
Make it count.

"...I try to walk softly on the earth"
Not many people can say they’ve had the opportunity to share their

has done it three times.
Louisville native, Karen Boone says she is thrilled to have been
selected for a third time since 1996 as the 2015 Kentucky Derby
Festival Poster artist. In the past, she was chosen as the KDF
poster artist in 1996 and again in 1998. “I feel like they
already know me, like we are all just old friends,” she said.
Much has changed since Boone’s first poster design. In 1996, she
was a new mother and was just starting her design firm Karen
Boone Designs. In 1998 she was raising a toddler, traveling, and her
design company was doing well. Her son is now an adult and her
firm has been successful for almost 20 years. “The festival exposure
had a profound effect on growing my business,” She said. “…
People tell me, ‘oh you signed a poster for me at this or that event,’
where they have the art in their home or office. It is so cool that
they remember and enjoy the work.” Now, as a
successful business woman and a proud mother,
Karen is excited to share her new artistic vision
with her hometown and the people she holds
dear.
Like any great artist, Karen takes time to include
her own inspirations in each of the pieces she
shares with the world. In the last 20 years since
her first Festival poster, she has realized a new
passion in the world around us. “I live a green life;
I try to walk softly on the earth, so I have been
painting the last few years with more natural
76
The Fillies, Inc & Kentucky Derby Festival 2015 Official Program
supplies.” Karen’s artistic vision is to explore more ways to make her
art more organic, using natural milk paint, organic brushes and canvasses that contain no animal parts and painting with more earth
tones and pigments. Her goal is to make her art less harmful to the
environment and more reflective of the earth’s beauty.
The official poster, Karen sketched the design in natural oil paint in
earth tones to create the image of the Pegasus. For the limited edition, she took a different approach. Using her graphic design skills,
she recreated the Pegasus image as a graphical representation, deconstructed using bold lines and geometric shapes. In collaboration
with the Festival’s existing Green initiatives, Karen’s designs were
printed with soy inks on FSC paper. The poster is also a smaller size
than the past, to reduce waste.
Having such a familiar platform to showcase her work is an important piece of Karen's success. "I am very grateful to the Kentucky
Derby Festival for their choice to support local talent. To be part of
a major festival that brings so many people together… makes me
proud of a community that supports one another.”
Though Karen has accomplished much, her artistic
ambition continues to grow. “I am interested in having some larger painting shows, and breaking into
the national market more and more. I want to travel
to get inspiration for that work.
However, no matter how large her career becomes
or how far her influence extends, Karen always
knows she has a place to return. “I am a Louisville
native, despite a lot of travel and living in other cities, this is home.”

Louisville,s got the
pedal to the metal when it comes
to the city's cycling scene.
A new biking attraction that owns the bragging rights to being the
first of its kind in the world, recently made its debut at Louisville
Mega Cavern and is creating a world-wide buzz.
Mega Underground Bike Park has 40-plus trail lines covering 320,000
square feet, all located 75 feet underground. Adding to the cool
factor is that cyclists will be able to ride year round because the
cavern always maintains a 58-degree temperature.
The bike park is ideal for all ages and skill levels – from BMX, dirt and
mountain bike enthusiasts – to casual and cyclocross riders.
Eva Bandman Cyclocross Park – Known as one of
the premier cyclocross venues in the country, the course combines
scenic views of downtown Louisville and the Ohio River. It boasts
adventurous features like sand pits, run-ups, flyovers and wooded
areas. The park played host to the 2013 Elite Masters UCI World Cyclocross Championships (Louisville was the first city outside Europe to
host this event). An Eva Bandman Cyclocross Park II is in the works.
Louisville Extreme Park – Open 24/7, upgrades are
under way at one of the nation’s best skate parks, which features
40,000 square feet of outdoor, concrete skating surface. Opened in
2002 after the city’s successful hosting of the X-games, local skaters
helped provide input to other amenities such as a 24-foot full pipe and
a wooden vert ramp.
Louisville Loop – This estimated 100-mile trail system that’s
in the works will eventually encircle the city and link existing and new
parks and neighborhoods to civic attractions, transportation
alternatives and recreation
opportunities. Look for Louisville Loop
signs on the Waterfront to access
some of the 38 miles already
completed.
cont. on next page
Did we already mention that it’s the only one like it on the planet?
Because of that, Louisville has been thrust into the international spotlight. Louisville Mega Cavern’s phones have been buzzing with callers
from Germany, France, Italy and Canada who are curious to know
more about this unique underground biking adventure.
USA Today didn’t dub Louisville one of the 10Best Bike-Friendly
Cities in 2014 for nothing. A biking boom is in full swing in the
city this year.
Here’s a rundown of some other biking thrills that will make
you want to get rolling!
Big Four Bridge – The bicycle and pedestrian bridge
spans the Ohio River and connects Louisville to Jeffersonville,
Ind. The two-mile, round-trip journey offers breathtaking views
of the city, river and internationally-acclaimed Waterfront Park.
New Yorkers – think Brooklyn Bridge meets the High-Line!
BMX Track and Park – Louisville is home to the nationally recognized BMX track at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. The park
also includes 513 acres and 2.25 miles of trails (some open for bikers
and hikers).

Parklands at Floyds Fork – Whether you prefer a
smooth, paved road or a rugged, dirt trail, the Parklands offers
several biking options. Currently you can ride on nine shared use
bike path miles that are part of the Louisville Loop. Another 10 miles
are expected to be complete this year. The Parklands is also home to
PNC Kentucky Derby Festival Tour de Lou –
Louisville is home to several bike events each year, including one of the
newest, the PNC Kentucky Derby Festival Tour de Lou, which made its
debut in 2014. KDF has once again partnered with the Louisville Bicycle
Club for this year’s race, which is under way April 26 and begins and
ends at Waterfront Park. Open to all ages and skill levels, the open
course features a 20-mile intermediate ride and a 35-mile experienced
ride. Some of the course highlights are an Olmsted Park tour, including
Shawnee, Chickasaw, Wayside, Iroquois and Cherokee parks. Info on the
Tour de Lou at www.kdf.org.

Fan favorites of the
Kentucky Derby Festival
This Kentucky born band had a string of hits in the 1980s, including
No Parking (On The Dance Floor), Headlines, Freak-A-Zoid and the
#1 single Operator.
Vocalist
Belinda Lipscomb, who
has been with the band since their
inception in 1976, took some time off
from their current tour to talk to us
about the band’s beginning, time on the
road and their upcoming show at the
2015 Festival.
Can you tell me a little about the
formation of Midnight Star?
It all started with a conversation. We
met at Kentucky State University, but we
were from all over the USA. We were
musically inclined and that’s where the
interest began. Bands at the University
would usually break up at the end of
the school year, but we had a more
long-term plan in sight.
Who were your key music influences?
Personally, I’m inspired by artists like Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye…
the list goes on. I think the group, overall, was very inspired by the
Motown Era. Whether it is gospel, jazz, or anything else from the 70s,
we are music lovers at heart and inspired by all kinds of sound. That
diversity is what brought us together.
What was it like to appear on Soul Train for the first time?
It was our first national television performance, so it was very exciting!
There were a lot of nerves, but it was such a great opportunity. It was
different from a lot of our previous performances because this time we
had the crew of Soul Train dancers elevating our performance. It was a
memorable day.
Where were you when you found out that “Operator” hit
#1 on US R&B chart?
We were just minding our own business, at a meeting in Ohio.
Someone came into the room and told us the news, and we all began
to scream and shout! We found out the news mid-day, but things got
a little crazy that night!
82
The Fillies, Inc & Kentucky Derby Festival 2015 Official Program
Do you ever get tired of performing fan-favorite
“No Parking (On The Dance Floor)”?
Never! When you look at the amazing crowd and how much they
enjoy it, you could never get tired of it. As long as we are here, we will
do whatever it takes to make the crowd have a good time.
You are on the road a lot! How do you balance being at home
and performing on the road?
After you do it as long as we have, it’s like clockwork. Home is home,
and the job is the job. We’re fortunate that our families are
comfortable with that. It’s very refreshing when you come home after
traveling. You can respect yourself – I look in the mirror and know I did
something great, because I have made people happy.
We’re very excited to have you performing at this year’s
Kentucky Derby Festival. Do you love performing in Louisville?
We love performing in our home state, especially this time of the year.
It’s the biggest and best party of the year. Louisville is all about hospitality. We meet no strangers, especially Derby time. When Midnight
Star gets the opportunity to perform in Louisville it’s like a big family
reunion!

Inaugural Pegasus Parade
REMEMBERED
Since it’s first march down Broadway in 1956, the Pegasus Parade has entertained millions of spectators over the past 59 years. For one family, though,
going to the parade as a spectator wasn’t enough – three generations have
worked side by side to help create the grand spectacle we enjoy today.
From being involved in planning of the very first parade, riding equestrian
units and even handling inflatable, this is truly a family tradition.
