The Branson Parks and Recreation Department was able to make several improvements to the park system in 2015 and more are planned for 2016. We hope that all of our citizens and visitors are able to enjoy the many great parks and amenities that the Branson park system has to offer! Stockstill Park unfortunately experienced flooding in 2015. During the process of rebuilding the park, we took the opportunity to improve the playground and add additional benches in high traffic areas to create a better visitor experience. Three tennis courts were resurfaced with more planned for 2016. Alexander Park also saw significant upgrades to both of the ball fields in 2015. Dugouts were added to both fields and the infields were regraded to provide a much better playing experience. Move improvements are planned in 2016. The Branson Lakeside RV Park saw a completion of a five year project to upgrade RV sites from gravel to concrete. In addition, through a City of Branson Sustainability Grant, the department was able to re-deck a fishing dock that will provide a better experience for all of our anglers. The community suffered a major blow when a fire destroyed the historic Owen’s homestead at Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area. Plans are being formulated to move forward in 2016 with a project that will continue to preserve the historical value of this local landmark. Stay tuned. The retaining wall at John Nygard Memorial Park was replaced due to deterioration of the old wall, built in the 1940’s as part of a WPA project. In addition, a concrete slab and new picnic tables were generously added by the Hiawatha Heights Neighborhood Association. The Branson RecPlex athletic facilities continue to be a focus due to high usage, and the Parks Department was able to upgrade some of the facilities. Over the last two seasons, the ball fields were regraded and leveled, new LED scoreboards added and both parking lots were resealed. In early 2016, the Cox Fitness Facility will be outfitted with new carpet. The Parks and Recreation Department would like to offer a SPECIAL THANKS to the many volunteer groups for their various contributions in 2015. The list of groups includes Missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, College of the Ozarks Character Camp, National Junior Honor Society, Branson High School Honor Society, Branson Theatre Club, Target and the Tree Board. We would also like to thank all of the individuals who have so freely donated their time and energy to the Branson Parks & Recreation to help us continue to make our park system a success. 23 A L K I N G PA W & S L I THS TRA The Branson Parks and Recreation Department, along with the Engineering and Public Works Departments, are excited to continue to add more trails and walking paths to the already expansive trail system throughout the area. In 1999, the total distance of trails and walking paths provided by the city totaled 1.07 miles. Since that time, 9.73 miles of trails and walking paths have been added, and we continue to expand our growing network. Listed below are trails and walking paths that can be found throughout the city. If you have questions about the trail system, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 417-335-2368. Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area is in the heart of Branson and offers a nature escape with 140 acres of wooded and rugged hill country. From its inception in 1998, the park was envisioned to be a showcase for nature and beauty in the Ozarks. In recent years, improvements have been made to the parking lot and signage. A large wooden log archway over an ornamental iron gate with a decorative native stone veneer now welcomes visitors to the park. The Lakeside Forest trail system includes 6 distinct trails totaling 4.72 miles that range from fairly flat and child friendly to much more strenuous. Highlights include the Bluff Trail, which has 338 handmade steps as well as a beautiful waterfall during rainy periods. The property includes the remains of the Lyle Owen homestead, originally built in 1911, as well as a barn and almost 2,000 feet of hand-built stone walls. Unfortunately in 2015, the home was almost completely destroyed in a fire. The Parks Department is in the planning stages of developing a way to preserve the historical value of the homestead. Waterfall Trail The Waterfall Trail runs along an un-named tributary of Roark Creek and includes some beautiful rock formations, a waterfall and a dense tree canopy. The 2/3 mile long trail is an unpaved footpath that is rugged in some locations and crosses a creek in two locations. Since the trail runs along a natural creek, it is subject to closure during heavy rainfall. Trail extensions are expected in 2016, with the addition of up to ½ mile of additional trails. The trail is located 300 feet north of the intersection of Roark Valley Road and Shepherd of the Hills Expressway. Limited parking is available near the trailhead. Sunset Park Sunset Park, located right along Lake Taneycomo, features a paved and lighted 6/10 mile walking path. Exercise stations along the walking path allow an opportunity to enhance your heart rate. A disc golf course can be found in the interior of the walking path. Sunset Park is open from 6:00am to 10:00pm. North Beach Park The North Beach Park walking path is a scenic trail on the banks of Lake Taneycomo. The walking path connects to the Branson Landing boardwalk, totaling 3/4 mile. Other park features include two fishing docks, picnic tables, barbeque grills and horseshoe pits. 24 Stockstill Park Stockstill Park features a popular walking path next to Roark Creek. The 1/2 mile asphalt walking path wraps around two softball fields, two picnic pavilions and a large children’s playground located in the park. Hikers and walkers can connect with the Roark Creek Trail at Stockstill Park and make their way to the Branson Landing and North Beach Park, or they can follow the trail west along the beautiful Roark Creek. At present, the Roark Creek Trail is approximately 3.2 miles long. Plans to improve signage along the Roark Creek Trail are scheduled for 2016. Branson RecPlex The Branson RecPlex is another popular destination for walkers. A 1 mile asphalt walking path loops around the entire complex. Whether you walk a leisurely pace with your dog or power walk for exercise, you will have lots to see at the complex, including the aquatic center, a ball field complex, soccer fields, park pavilions, and a playground. Restroom facilities are also available. MEMORIAL BENCH PROGRAM This program allows individuals to donate a bench to memorialize or celebrate a family member or friend. Benches purchased through the program will be installed in city parks, playgrounds or along city trails. Exact placement will be at the discretion of the city staff. Once the bench and commemorative plaque is in place, you will receive a certificate and a map showing the location of the bench. The cost is $1,000, which includes the purchase, transportation, installation and continued care of your bench as well as funding for landscape projects within the City of Branson. All benches are made of recycled materials which will provide years of comfort and durability.
