“I consider myself a lifelong learner and love learning new things as
well as improving my current skills. I believe that with knowledge one
makes better decisions and understands people and systems better. I
enjoy helping others make better decisions about their estate plans by
teaching them how it all works. I also believe that I improve my own
knowledge by teaching. This is why I love to teach as well as learn.”

Compose Masterful, Stunning Images
Photography
Mastering Your
SLR Digital Camera
Do you control your camera or does
it control you? If you shoot mostly on
AUTO mode, you are only using a very
small portion of what your camera.
This class will release the potential
of what it can do and how you can
greatly improve your images. Want to stop being just a snapshot-taker, and reduce your hundreds of snapshots to just a
few quality images, then this is definitely the class for you.
Your SLR camera has numerous functions that are obvious
but many are hidden. Find out what they are and where to
find them. Learn exposure, how to use selected focus, ISO
and white balance, how to turn night into day and many
other methods that will help you to control and utilize your
camera to its fullest potential. Hand’s on class for beginners
and advanced amateur photographers. REQUIREMENT: SLR
camera. Bring camera and instruction manual to all classes.
Jack Ligon became interested in photography at a very early
age of 6 when a counselor at a summer camp showed him
the magic of printing a picture. From there on Jack had a
Kodak brownie camera by his side for two years until he saved
enough to buy himself an Argus C3 35 mm camera which
he still owns to this day. He began teaching. He graduated
from the Fishback School of Photography in Sacramento, CA
in 1970. He began teaching photography at LPC Community
Education in 2004 with only one Portraiture class, and has
expanded his courses to 14 or more on an entire range of
topics and subjects in photography. Several of his students
now have a successful photo business in Pleasanton.

Parenting
Helping Older Children Become
Responsible and Independent
Lack of responsibility is a common complaint of parents of
older teens and young adults. We expect our children to get
a good education, grow up, and move away from home. Many
children struggle with this. Problems may begin with a high
school student performing below his ability or may show up
after graduation where the child seems unmotivated to work
hard in college, learn a trade, or get a job. As parents, there is
much we can do to help our children learn to be responsible
and become independent. This class will teach you what to do
in the teen years to help your child successfully navigate the
path to becoming an independent and self-sufficient adult.
It will also cover how to help a ‘’failure to launch’’ child make
the difficult transition from adolescence to adulthood (being
independent and self-sufficient). As a parent you have a critical
role in this process (Suitable for parents of children 13 to 25).
Tom Dozier is a behaviorist and parenting coach, and he has a
board certification in behavior analysis. See www.guaranteedpt.
com for more information about Tom and the skills he teaches.

3 Things Good Parents Do that
Cause Bad Behavior
Although every good parent should attend to their child’s needs
and have quality (and non-quality) time together, some children
misbehave to get more attention from their parents. Is it a lack
of quality time or a need for more attention? Come and find
out. Coercion is making a child do something. There are times
that we must force our will on our children. Good parents do
that. But with some kids, it backfires. Come find out when
coercion is appropriate and other skills that work better. If a
child misbehaves, many good and responsible parents will give
a consequence. How is this working for you? If you are still
struggling with misbehavior, then come and learn other ways
to respond to your child’s misbehavior that will reduce the
problem behavior and increase appropriate behavior. his class
is for parents of children 13 and younger. Dozier

Mindfulness Practice for Beginners
Self Defense for Women
Mindfulness can be described as a particular way of paying attention and being present in the moment. Training in
mindfulness has been used successfully for over 30 years
to treat stress and stress-related illness, to improve sleep
and concentration, and to relieve anxiety, depression, and
chronic pain. Research has demonstrated that even 15 minutes a day of mindfulness practice can make a difference
in improving cognitive function, physical health, emotional
well-being and interpersonal effectiveness. Participants will
learn breathing techniques, exercises designed to transform
habitual ways of thinking about and reacting to stress, and a
variety of simple brief meditative practices that can be readily
incorporated into daily life. Class emphasizes direct experience rather than lecture, and participants will be encouraged
to do home practice, for while mindfulness is not difficult to
learn, like everything else in life, it requires regular practice
for mastery. Rebecca Stanwyck is a licensed psychotherapist and experienced adult educator who has been teaching
mindfulness classes and groups since 2011. For more information, see her website at: www.mindfulness-eastbay.com
Class is designed to empower girls to prevent crime and
victimization, break the myths surrounding violence against
women, and develop simple, easy-to-use self-defense
techniques. Enrollment is limited to 25. Ages 14 to adult.
Carole Staehle is on staff at Tri-Valley Haven.
