A NOTE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER…
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
I hope everybody had a great
Holiday Season with family and
friends. I’m looking forward to
this coming season and the year 2016 in
general. All signs are pointing toward another
very successful season. The uptick in business
can be attributed to a lot of positive things that
continue to happen at Voyager, but the bottom
line still remains - the best marketing is word of
mouth!! Thank you to all who have been so
positive in your comments, not only to me, but
to your friends and families that are coming to
Voyager for the first time, or who are returning
after an extended absence.
I also thank all of you for your positive and
complimentary comments regarding the
changes and improvements we have made
around the property. I can honestly say that I
have received 99% positive comments, which
is absolutely wonderful. Please share these
comments with your friends as they are
deciding where to spend this coming winter.
We still have our RV and Home Sales Referral
commissions programs in effect. For every
RVer that you refer for stays of 30 days or
longer, we will pay you $50. For every new
home sale that you refer, we’ll pay you $2000 !!
A full resort benefits everybody and sure helps
property values…and a little pocket cash never
hurt anyone either!!
Be sure to check out the new, larger
homes that we brought in this summer on 7th
Street. They provide a new price point and will
hopefully be a popular alternative to Park
Models in the Voyager community. Referrals
count on these houses as well.
Finally, I see a lot more motorcycles
coming in this season, and I need to plan our
January ride. I hear that some would like
shorter rides as well. Shoot me an email at
[email protected] If
you have a specific ride to recommend. I’m
looking at Friday rides this year to minimize the
traffic we encounter.
Regards, Rick

FAITH, GIVING, AND THANKS
Here is some good news! Christmas isn’t over yet. I know that most of you have
already put away the decorations and written some thank you notes. However,
Christmas season really ends on January 6 – also known as Epiphany. Tradition says
that Epiphany marks the arrival of the Wise Men who brought their gifts of gold,
frankincense and myrrh, and January 6 is the time when we can count all the pipers
piping down to that solitary partridge in a pear tree that started that silly song. One
more thing; January 6 is the day, in some parts of the world, where children go to bed
and wait for the Gift Giver to come instead of Santa Claus.
So, we get six days of Christmas to start off the New Year. There is more! We can
celebrate the New Year with the knowledge that Christmas means the birth of Jesus,
whose very name means Immanuel, God with us! We can know that the season of
blessing that God intends for us extends throughout the whole of our lives, despite the
difficulties we might have. We can come to worship knowing we have a family in Christ
that cares for us and we for them. We know that people are praying for us, and
studying alongside us. We know that our family can come around us in times of
sorrow and grief, and that same family is there to encourage and inspire us - all in the
name of Christ.
Johnny Mathis has a song on one of his Christmas albums that says: “May I
suggest the meaning of Christmas is not the things we do at Christmas, but the
Christmas things we do all year through.” That is what we need to hear in this new
year, isn’t it? In this busy and sometimes difficult world, isn’t it good to remember that
God loves us enough to send His son to live among us, and that God’s spirit is with us
each and every day? That is the Good News that we celebrate each Sunday at Chapel.
Join us.

ROTARY CLUB CHILDREN’S FOOD DRIVE
Cienega (Vail) Rotary has established the
“Food in a Backpack” program that is
supporting 25 children in need this year.
Items are put in backpacks and delivered by
Rotarians to 3 elementary schools in the Vail
School District in which Voyager is located.
The program provides easy-to-prepare
meals for 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 2
dinners each weekend. For the 4th year Cienega Rotary is
asking Voyager residents to donate individual easy open
servings of: instant oatmeal, pop tarts, fruit and
pudding cups, cup of soup, raisins, snack bars,
100% juice boxes, chocolate milk boxes, small and
large cans of pasta, etc. through April 25. Donations can
be delivered to Bay #47 carport across from the
playground (Seafarer Street) into the drop box. The past 3
years Voyager Residents have contributed over 30% of
the food required for this project!! Any questions contact
Mark at 574-5826.
Community Cares
Are you living alone, ill, injured, or
fragile and would appreciate a
FREE daily check for health and
safety? If the answer is yes, the
Community Cares Program can meet that need.
Participants are given a set of cards illustrating days of the
week. It will be your responsibility to be certain the correct
day is displayed in your window before 10 each morning.
Volunteers will check each day. If correct, they will
continue on their way. If not, you will receive a knock on
your door, a phone call, or other instructions to confirm
your health or safety is not in danger.

As we begin another year in our
beautiful Voyager home, let us share
with folks struggling with where their
next meal will come from. Consider
donating non-perishable food in nonglass containers, especially healthy cereal, smooth
peanut butter, and cans of meat, tuna, fruit and
vegetables. Collection boxes are located in the
Ballroom. Thank you and Happy New Year!
Thanks to all the wonderful people who helped make
the Children with Cancer Christmas Party a success

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?
by Midge Lopez
How amazing to discover the complexities that shaped your neighbor's life! What little known facts make each
individual 's life unique? Like a pie, until you break through the crust, the filling inside remains a mystery.
This past year my husband Tony and I moved to a 55 + community housing 254 units. There is a community building, a
single structure nearby for the many mailboxes, an indoor pool, a tennis court and green common areas. Most contact
with residents consists of a nod as a neighbor strolls by taking the dog for a walk, a wave as a car passes with a group
leaving the area, or an occasional chat while attending the monthly community meeting. Superficial conversation occurs at
a bazaar or while helping with a community baked potato dinner.....isolated contacts with relatively unknown people.
Where did these people live before deciding to reside at Leisure Estates? What profession occupied hundreds of
hours of each life before retiring? Similarly, at Voyager, people from throughout the U.S. and Canada seek the sunshine,
the camaraderie and activities afforded the residents BUT, who are these people? Their history seldom surfaces. The
answers, while varied, might prove fascinating and amazing. Once the external facade is gently cracked, the information
might easily provide the basis for a first rate novel. Bits and pieces of their past surfaces and we discover intriguing depth
and substance that formed each individual's path.
Let me illustrate by introducing you to Valdo Valdimirov. Who would have suspected that this quiet unassuming man's
life contains a myriad of surprises? Born in Bulgaria, he served in the Bulgarian Army. After being discharged from the
service, he and his brother joined the Bulgarian Circus which eventually led to performing six years with the Ringling
Brothers Barnum and Baily circus. Traveling and entertaining throughout the world adds unbelievable adventures that
would captive a young reader's heart.
This man developed a passion for card tricks and magic. In 1970 he created a unique card trick known as “The
Switch”. In 1989, while watching David Copperfield on TV, he saw HIS trick performed! In 2000, author John Lovik wrote
a book entitled The Switch and gave Vlado Vladimirov credit as the creator. Recently while browsing a magic shop in
Seattle, Vlado discovered his trick being sold.
Eventually this man of many talents and a plethora of adventures closed those chapters of his life book and settled
with his wife Betty in the Puget Sound area. He long since retired from the magical world and has become just "another
neighbor".
Each human has his or her own story, most likely untold. Fading into retirement, we become just another person on
the block. How exciting it might prove were we to dig deeper into the past years of our neighbors and discover what
intriguing stories and exciting moments might be waiting there to be discovered!

Salvation Army Toy Drive and is a member of Panhellenic Plus Friends.

WHAT I KNOW ABOUT CURSIVE WRITING
by Gretchen S. Cutts
Like horseback riding and gardening, cursive writing is being overtaken by new ways to accomplish our tasks of daily
living. The cursive that was necessary in the pat now becomes a hobby when it exists at all.
When I began kindergarten in 1940, cursive was the only way to write; we needed to “write right.” That meant perfectly
rounded Os, Ds and Cs, each letter exactly on the line, touching it but never into it. “Little” (lower case) letters were exactly
half the height of “big” (capital or upper case) letters, and “dangling” letters dangled below the line exactly the height of
little letters. And so on; there were many rules.
Over the decades, the rules were first eased, then forgotten. My handwriting became less easy to read, but the basic
rules still show through. Today, my oldest grandchild, 17, having received a lesson or two in cursive during her early
schooling, can sort of read and write it, while her younger siblings have not a clue about cursive’s rich and recent history,
let alone about how to read or write it.
Instead, they ‘text’ on hand-held electronic devices with small back-lit screens. To write, they mostly use their thumbs
on tiny keyboards. Instead of spelling, they type in shorthand vaguely reminiscent of the phonics we used while learning to
read and write. To communicate, they must of know the shorthand their friends use. There is no time in school for learning
how to read or write in cursive.
Cursive has meant much to me. It grew from something I learned at school to my being able to read the handwritten
notes pouring into our home every Christmas from my mother’s distant correspondents. I loved reading those notes; it was
getting peeks into my parents’ lives in ways that were otherwise unavailable to me. Later, I entered school essay contests
with carefully hand-written pages using blue ink to make my papers stand out from other contestants’ entries.
While in college, I missed my friends during holiday and summer breaks, and we wrote long, sometimes daily, letters.
Most of my lifelong correspondents came from this era and cursive played an important role in keeping those friendships. I
kept some old love letters until recently and it was amazing to re-read them before tossing them.
Today I exchange handwritten letters with only two others. The rest of my earlier correspondents have moved, died or
turned to e-mail. One has Alzheimer’s and can no longer write. I still write a long letter to her in cursive on her birthday,
however; her husband reads it to her and says she enjoys it, even though she has no idea who it’s from.
The benefits of cursive, in addition to signing checks, still include chatting with a friend over a cup of coffee, paper and
pen in hand as I write a long letter in cursive. Hand writing my letter slows down my thinking, lets me share more deeply,
enjoy more thoroughly, and prevents me from making hasty mistakes. Without cursive, I would have to change my lifestyle
in ways that I’m not willing to.
I’ll leave a dozen or so completed journals to my heirs, all written in cursive over about seven decades. Assuming they
might want to, who will be able to read them?
Gretchen has authored two books and many magazine and newspaper articles; many of her articles have been illustrated
with her own photographs. She is currently working on publishing a collection of her own stories. She and husband Bill live
in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and have enjoyed Voyager during the winter for more than ten years.

Good news! Silver is down to $14 an ounce! This means
that we can make bigger and more bangles at less
cost. We have purchased the equipment for and have
learned how to make “Synclastic” and “Anticlastic”
bracelets (mathematical/artistic terms for convex and
concave). The result is beautiful. We have purchased a
new gizmo so we can make spinner rings and a new
forming tool that, with a little effort, makes nice round
rings. We have a new oven used to anneal and harden
silver. In addition to fabrication we practice the “lost wax”
casting technique and have over 500 different molds you
can try. We usually cast every Thursday morning by 8 AM
if you would like to come in and watch. We enjoy a
Holiday/Christmas and Spring/Going Away Pizza party
each season. Come in and we’ll show you around. You
could even sign you up to learn basic silversmith with an

VOYAGER VOLUNTEERS
“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when
you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.” Unknown
Volunteers are the heart of our Voyager Community. Imagine Voyager without:
 Mail sorting and Saturday Parcel Pick-up
 Room set-up for events
 Compass Printing and Collating
 Compass and Compass Points Distribution to the Cove & the Bay
 Wednesday Night Show Ushers
 Holiday Decorations in the Ballroom and the Catalina Room
 Saturday Coffee, Market Daze Lunches, Mary’s Spaghetti Dinners or Dinner Shows
 Stained Glass, Glass Fusion, Ceramics, Silver, Woodshop, or Lapidary Shop supervision
 The Computer Resource Center
 Chapel and Summer Chapel
 The Library
 Dances and Lectures
 Health Clinic Assistants and Activity Office volunteers
 Arts & Crafts, Games & Cards, Dance & Exercise, Music, Sports, and Special Interest Coordinators
 Sound and broadcasting crew at events
 Community Cares, Neighbor to Neighbor, or Cove Cares/Voyager Sunshine/Bay Bouquets
 Support for Salvation Army, Pio Decimo, Community Food Bank, Shoe Drive, Food in a Backpack, or
Blood Drives
ALL of these events, activities, and services (and SO much more!) that make Voyager an award-winning
resort are staffed by unpaid volunteers. The next time you partake of an activity or event at Voyager,
consider how many Voyager residents helped make it happen – with no recompense other than the
satisfaction of helping make Voyager a better community for us all. Consider thanking volunteers when
you see them doing their “community service”.
You probably participate in at least one Voyager activity. You may sing, craft, dance, learn, listen, enjoy,
read, or play. Why not become a REAL part of your Voyager Community, and volunteer your time to an
activity or a project you enjoy. You’ll find – as all volunteers do – that giving is a great feeling.
...and if you’re already one of the many current volunteers at Voyager, THANK YOU!
How to volunteer?
 Ask the coordinator of an activity or the supervisor of a craft shop you’re currently involved in
 Sign up for table and chair set-up or other volunteer opportunities on the Activity Board
 Share your time and expertise by offering to teach or lead a new activity
 Follow up on requests for volunteers in the Compass and Compass Points
 Inquire about volunteer positions at the Health Clinic, Computer Resource Center, or the Activity
Office
