Teacher Spotlight
Zlatina Staykova is a native of Bulgaria and
came to Tallahassee to study with Prof. Lubomir
Georgiev. After receiving a Doctoral degree
in Cello Performance from the Florida State
university, Staykova continued to perform with
various chamber ensembles, among which the
Torreya, and Purple Martin String Quartets. She is a
member of the Tallahassee, Pensacola, and Mobile
Symphony. Staykova enjoys teaching tremendously
and in her private studio leads students of all ages
through the adventures of the cello playing
Terice Allen received her BME degree from university
of North Texas and her MME degree from Florida State
University. She holds all-level music certification in
both Texas and Florida. She was director of the North
Texas Junior Youth Orchestra from 1984-1985 and
taught grades 6-12 from 1985-1989 in the Richardson
(Texas) Independent School District. From 19891993 Allen taught grades 5-12 in the Denton (Texas)
Independent School District. From 1995-2000 she
was involved with the Tallahassee Symphony Youth
Orchestra as the director of the Primos, coach of the Tallahassee Fiddlers,
and coached the bass, cello and viola sections of the Senior Orchestra.
In 1997 she began teaching at The Florida State university School. Allen is
now the Music Department Head and Assistant Professor at Florida State
university School, teaching orchestra in grades 6-12, guitar, grades 9-12,
and AP Music Theory. Allen has been the Mentor Chair for District 2/3, a
Mentor at The Florida State university Schools, and on the editorial board
of the Florida Music Director Magazine. She has been a reviewer for the
Music Demonstration Schools, for the State of Florida, and has completed
various research projects with Doctoral Candidates and Professors at The
Florida State university. While in Texas, her orchestras continuously received
Superior Ratings at u.I.L. Contest. Her students at Florida High consistently
receive Superior marks at The North Florida String Festival and District 3
Music Performance Assessment and have been selected to perform at the
Tallahassee Winter Festival Competition, the Tallahassee Honors Solo Recital,
Bach Parley and the Florida all-state orchestras. Her orchestras at Florida
High have performed for numerous events in the Tallahassee area including
performances for Secretary of State Katherine Harris and FSu Alumni
Weekend. She is a cellist and is currently in her 26th year in the secondary
instrumental music classroom.

concert is an honors recital featuring musicians 18 years

Tango Sur is the only band in the region
that performs authentic Argentine
tango music. It was formed in 2002
by FSU law professor Fernando Tesón.
Tango Sur prides itself in maintaining high
musical standards, and its musicians
are classically trained. The repertoire
includes traditional pieces from tango’s
Golden Era and the modern tango
music from Astor Piazzolla. The band
has performed at various local venues,
including the Governor’s mansion, and
has given annual recitals sponsored by
FSU College of Music.

Marcía Porter, soprano
Award-winning soprano Marcía Porter made her New York solo recital debut in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie
Hall in 2005. An active recitalist, the soprano has performed in numerous venues throughout the United States,
Italy, Brazil, and the Czech Republic. Porter has sung at such prestigious international festivals as the Prague
Proms, Piccolo Spoleto Festival, the Ravinia Festival, and the Ameropa International Chamber Music
Festival. She has performed with such national and international organizations as the Czech National Symphony
Orchestra, the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra, Beijing International Symphony Orchestra (Beijing, China)
and the Camerata Filarmonica Bohemia (Prague, Czech Republic). Porter has also performed with the Lyric
Opera of Chicago, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Chautauqua Opera, Dayton Opera, and Chicago Opera Theatre.
Ms. Porter’s discography includes the 2011world premier recording of Requiem für Mozart, works for soprano
and orchestra by Antonio Rosetti, which was released by the German record label Ars Produktion and her 2013
solo recording, Open Thine Heart, a recording of contemporary American vocal works, which was released by
Albany Records.
Ms. Porter’s oratorio repertoire includes works such as Dvořák’s Te Deum; Handel’s Messiah; Haydn’s
Creation; Mahler’s Wir geniessen die himmlischen Freuden (Symphony no. 4); Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Psalm
42, op. 42; Mozart’s Requiem; Penderecki’s Credo; Poulenc’s Gloria; and Rossini’s Stabat Mater. Porter
ushered in the 2009/10 season with her debut with Pensacola Opera as Hattie in the company’s first-ever
commissioned opera, The Widow’s Lantern by David Ott. Porter has also performed with the Lyric Opera of
Chicago, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Chautauqua Opera, Dayton Opera, and Chicago Opera Theatre. Critics
have praised her. “...Ms. Porter ...performed so vibrantly that it seemed a shame to drop the curtain so quickly…
uniformly excellent ...quality voice”, “vocally and physically attractive”, and “assured and winsome” and
“…Porter, whose lovely first vocal entrance, nearly 45 minutes into the first act…was one of the highlights of
the evening.” She has captivated audiences in such roles as Mimi (La Bohème), Pamina (The Magic Flute),
Malwina (Der Vampyr), Lucy (Treemonisha), Mrs. Hayes (Susannah), St. Answers (Four Saints in Three Acts)
and, the ingénue, a role written for her for Dayton Opera’s world premier of Adolphus Hailstork’s Paul
Laurence Dunbar: Common Ground. Based on the tremendous success of her 2000 debut with Opera Theatre of
St. Louis, she returned during the company’s 2001 season for performances as Camilla Pocket in Argento’s Miss
Havisham’s Fire.
A Rotary International Cultural Ambassadorial Scholar in Rome, Italy, Ms. Porter has won several other awards
and honors including the 2004 National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Artist Award Competition,
the NATS Intern program, finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Central Regional Competition, Jessye Norman
Graduate Fellowship in Voice, Opera Carolina Young Artist Recital Program Award, and the Farwell Award.
Dr. Porter specializes in Brazilian song literature and diction and in 2011-2012 she was a Fulbright Scholar to
Brazil. Her research was entitled “Bridging boundaries through musical collaboration and cultural exchange: a
lecture and recital series of contemporary classical Brazilian and African American vocal literature.” During
her residency at the Universidade de São Paolo, she presented numerous recitals, lectures and masterclasses in
cities throughout Brazil including São Paulo, Campinas, Alphaville, Ribeirão Preto and Brasilia. Additionally,
she co-taught a course on African American and Brazilian art song literature. Dr. Porter is an Associate Professor of Voice at The Florida State University College of Music. She is a much
sought after clinician and has presented masterclasses throughout the mid-western and southeastern US. She has
served on the faculty of Ameropa International Chamber Music Festival in Prague, Czech Republic and as
visiting Professor of Voice at Universidade de São Paolo. Dr. Porter, a graduate of the New Orleans Center for
the Creative Arts, received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in voice performance from Northwestern
University. Porter earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in performance from The University of Michigan,
where she studied with world-renowned Metropolitan Opera singer Shirley Verrett. Previous teachers include
Margaret Harshaw, Carmen Mehta, and Kathleen Kaun. 2014-2015

Directors’ Biographies
ALEXANDER JIMÉNEZ (Music Director, Symphony
Orchestra Director) Music Director of the
Tallahassee Youth Orchestras since 2000, Dr.
Jimenez serves as Professor of Conducting,
Director of Orchestral Activities, and String Area
Coordinator at The Florida State university College
of Music. He has served on the faculties of San
Francisco State university and Palm Beach Atlantic
university. Dr. Jiménez is the recipient of The Florida
State university Teaching Award, the Transformation Through Teaching
Award from the FSu Spiritual Life Project, and has been nominated for
a university Distinguished Teaching Award.
under his direction the FSu Orchestras have continued their long
tradition of excellence. Both the undergraduate university Philharmonia
and the university Symphony Orchestra under Dr. Jiménez have
championed new music and collaborated with such composers as
Krzysztof Penderecki, Martin Bresnick, Anthony Iannaconne, Christopher
Theofanidis, Ellen Taafe Zwilich, Chen Yi, Zhou Long, and Ladislav
Kubik.
Jiménez is active as a guest conductor, teacher, and adjudicator
throughout the united States and Europe where he has appeared
in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Italy. Since 2009 he has
served on the international jury panel of the European Festival of
Music for Young People in Neerpelt, Belgium, and in 2013 was named
International Festival Ambassador.
Dr. Jiménez is a past president of the College Orchestra Directors
Association. He holds memberships in the College Orchestra Directors
Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Florida
Orchestra Association, and the League of American Orchestras.
CHRIS MILLER (Associate Music Director, Chamber
Orchestra Director) is the orchestra director at Chiles
High School. He is a National Board Certified Teacher
and the 2005 recipient of the Wiley Housewright
Award for excellence in music education. In March
of 2009 he led the Chiles Chamber Orchestra to a First
Place at the National Orchestra Festival in Atlanta. An
active performer, he has been principal second violin
in the Tallahassee Symphony for ten years and is also

a member of the Red Hills String Quartet. Mr. Miller has five children who
represent the sixth generation of direct descendants to occupy their
home in Lloyd.
COLLEEN MANSEAU (Director, Fundamentals; Viola
Coach) is from Detroit, Michigan. She studied
violin and viola at a young age and performed
with the Detroit Civic Orchestra. She began
her undergraduate studies at the San Francisco
Conservatory of Music. She received her Bachelor
of Music from San Francisco State university
and holds a Masters in viola performance.
Ms. Manseau has performed with the Albany
Symphony Orchestra, Valdosta Symphony
Orchestra, Penfield Symphony Orchestra, Walnut
Creek Orchestra, and the North West Florida Symphony. She is currently
a member of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. For the past few
years she has been the director for her own summer music camps for
string players and has been the primary viola instructor at the Florida
State university Summer Orchestra camps. She has been the director
of the TSYO Symphonic Strings and the Philharmonia. She teaches fifth
grade string classes in Leon County Schools. Ms. Manseau is currently
seeking a Doctorate in viola performance at Florida State university.
ASHLEY HAGADORN (Director, Intermezzo Strings) is
the orchestra director at Montford Middle School.
She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Instrumental
Music Education and a Certificate in Viola
Performance under the tutelage of Dr. Pamela
Ryan from the Florida State university. A South
Florida native, Ms. Hagadorn has a vast amount
of orchestral and chamber music experience. She
was a member of the Aurora Sting Quartet for 5
years which performed throughout the tri-county
area and has played in Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center as a member
of the Florida Youth Orchestra. Ms. Hagadorn hopes to inspire the next
generation of musicians just as her teachers have inspired her.
Directors’ Biographies
AISHA IVEY (Director, Tallahassee Fiddlers) is
an award-winning fiddler, having won the
Southeastern united States Scottish Fiddle
Championship for nine years in a row along
with awards and ribbons for her Irish, OldTime, and Scandinavian fiddling. She won the
award for ‘Best March’ at the 2010 National
Scottish Fiddle Competition in Williamsburg,
Virginia. Several of Aisha’s fiddle students have won awards at state,
regional and national fiddle contests as well. Aisha has studied with
some of the world’s best fiddlers including Mark O’Connor, Eileen Ivers,
Bonnie Rideout, Laura Risk, Brian Conway, James Kelly, Elke Baker and
many others. She has taught privately and with music schools in Florida,
North Carolina, and Tennessee and she also teaches workshops and
clinics around the region. She has recorded several CD’s of traditional
fiddle music with different musicians and she performs regularly at area
festivals and concert venues. Aisha is the president of The Florida Fiddlers
Association (elected from 2012-2015) and she is an active researcher of
fiddle styles. The Aisha Ivey Collection, a series of video interviews with
prominent fiddlers from Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia,
is located in the Special Collections of Berea College in Kentucky.
MICKEY ABRAHAM (Director, Acoustic Ensemble)
has emerged as one of Florida’s most recognized
acoustic musicians and instructors. He is a youth
orchestra director, a performer, and a writer for
Flatpicking Guitar Magazine. Mickey’s creative
methods of teaching, playing, and promoting
acoustic music have earned respect from acoustic
legends David Grisman and Joe Craven, who
comments, “Mickey’s enthusiasm for sharing music
inspires his students, that’s the hallmark of a great
teacher.” Apart from recording and performing
with some of Florida’s first-rate musicians (Larry Rice, Gabe Valla,
Aaron O’Rourke) perhaps most appreciable is Mickey’s work with
his Acoustic Ensemble. These talented high school students, under
Mickey’s direction, travel to music festivals performing bluegrass, newgrass, tango, and even acoustic pop!
Directors’ Biographies
CAITLIN L. BISHOP (Executive Director) holds a
Masters in Arts Administration from Florida State
university, as well as Bachelors in Piano Performance
from Furman university and a Masters in Piano
Performance/Pedagogy from FSu. In addition to
serving as Executive Director of the TYO, Mrs. Bishop
is the owner and an instructor at the Bishop Piano
Studio in Tallahassee. Prior to joining the TYO staff,
she worked at the Gadsden Arts Center in Quincy,
FL.
