ZmirKudiyah 5775
ZmirKudiyah 5775
in honor of
Israel’s 67th Year of Independence
Centuries of Jewish
persecution led to the
birth of
the Zionist
movement. Under the
leadership of Theodore
Herzl in 1896, the
movement pushed for
the rebuilding of a
Jewish homeland in
Israel.
Then, the Holocaust happened - it showed just
how essential it was to have a Jewish state.
IN 1948 ISRAEL
BECAME A STATE!
When did Israel finally gain Independence?
On the 5th of Iyar, 1948,
the United Nations
approved the
PARTITION PLAN a plan to split an area
that was controlled by
England into
2 states:
a Jewish state
an Arab state
What happened after Israel was
declared Independent?
Declaration of
Independence

BUT ALSO WAR!!
The Arabs in the area and the surrounding countries
did not accept the plan, and thus Israel faced the first
of many wars challenging her existence.
Because the loss of life in fighting for Israel’s
existence is so high, Israel has a day of
remembrance before the independence day
celebrations can begin.
What is
this
day
called?
It is called Yom HaZikaron.
On this day we remember that
many soldiers have been killed
defending Israel. Also, many
people have been killed in
terrorist incidents.
What is the special name of the
Israeli milatary?
IDF - Israel Defense Forces
Tzvah Hagana L’Yisrael - Tzahal
Who serves in the IDF?
Israel has a mandatory draft so most Israeli teens
when they reach the age of 18 serve in the army.
Also some teens from other countries like the USA
choose to serve.
Sometimes teens from other countries choose
to serve. They are called Lone Soldiers.
South Bay parents hear ‘I’m joining the IDF’ from all three sons
A parent who gets a phone call after midnight
usually expects bad news.
For Renee M.* of Saratoga, it was not bad news
— just bittersweet — when her oldest son called
in the middle of the night from Israel to say he
wanted to serve in the Israel Defense Forces. “I
had really mixed feelings about it,” she said. “One
half of you is really proud, and you think that it’s
amazing your son feels so connected to Israel that
he wants to give back at this level. On the other
hand, I’m not going to lie — you’re scared to
death.”
Her son Jacob joined the IDF in August 2004, just
two months after graduating from Lynbrook High
School in San Jose.
Since that late-night phone call five years ago,
Renee and Howard M. have had all three of their
sons — Jacob, Ari and Elliot — serve in Israel’s
military.
Jweekly – November 2008
Girls serve for 2 years.
Boys serve for 3
years.
Many are called for reserve duty for
one month every year until they are
45.
So how do we honor those people who
died so Israel can exist?
In Israel a siren blares for on the eve and morning
of Yom HaZikaron. Everyone stops what they’re
doing. We’ll do a minute of silence with them:
YOUTUBE VIDEO:

Debbie Friedman – Im Tirzu
Debbie Friedman was an American singersongwriter of
Jewish religious songs and
melodies with a feminist slant. She was born
in Utica, New York, but moved with her family
to Minnesota at age 6. Sitting in shul as a
young girl she realized people were not
participating in the singing; this inspired her to
bring singable melodies to Jewish prayer.
V’ahavta was her first song, which she taught at
a Jewish youth convention and brought the
teens to tears.
She is best known for her
setting of "Mi Shebeirach", the prayer for
healing, which is used by hundreds of
congregations across America. Debbie produced
more than 20 albums during her career. She
died in 2011 of complications from pneumonia
after singing at a Limmud conference in
England.

Friedman’s version of Im Tirzu.

here together - and by working together to do Godly
actions in this world, we build a holy community –a

Each one of us must do the work, Each one of us must right the wrong
Each one of us must build the home, Each one of us must hold the hope
Each one of us, each one of us - Kehillah Kedoshah
It’s how we help, It’s how we give , It’s how we pray,
It’s how we heal, It’s how we live
