HISTORY
History
In the 1940’s, Alan and Ron Vater’s grandfather, Jack Adams,
opened Jack’s Drum Shop in Boston. In 1956 Alan and Ron’s
Godfather, Fred Maichele, began hand-turning drumsticks
at the rate of six pairs a day for Jack’s Drum Shop. The
reputation of these hand crafted drumsticks spread among
the area’s top drummers, and soon famous drummers like
Philly Joe Jones and Buddy Rich were seeking out these
special sticks.
In the 1970’s Clarry Vater, Jack’s son-in-law and Vater
Percussion’s founder, took over the family tradition. With
the help of his two young sons, Alan and Ron, Clarry began
producing drumsticks in the basement of his own music store
in Norwood, MA. His goal was to perfect the art of stick
making with modern machinery and maintain the high quality
that made Jack’s sticks famous.
In the 1980’s, due to their sticks’ popularity increasing,
Vater moved operations to a larger facility in Holbrook,
MA. Vater’s private label customer base then expanded from
local drum shops to major companies such as Vic Firth and
Zildjian. During this intense growth, Vater perfected the
design of their equipment and developed a unique formula
for finishing their sticks, while keeping strict quality control
their number one priority.
Now 50 years later, the Vater Family expands on the family
tradition by offering the finest drumsticks, timpani, marimba
and vibe mallets, brushes, specialty sticks and accessories
in the world. Quality, craftsmanship, pride, and handson production… started by Jack, perfected by Clarry, and
carried into the new millennium by Alan and Ron Vater and
a team of dedicated craftsmen. Now, as always… Quality is

Wood Types
Wood type is the key element to a drumstick’s response and durability. Vater crafts their
drumsticks from only the finest American Hickory and Sugar Maple available.
Hickory is the most popular wood used for making
drumsticks. Hickory is denser, heavier and more rigid
than Maple. Hickory can also absorb a great amount of
shock, which reduces hand and wrist fatigue. “Dark”, or
“brown” hickory, is found closer to the tree’s center and
is slightly denser and heavier than “white” hickory.

There are four main components that make up a drumstick. They are responsible for the
overall feel, balance and response of the drumstick.
Length
Affects the balance
and fulcrum point of all
drumsticks. Longer sticks
offer greater reach and
leverage, while shorter sticks
are easier to control and tend
to feel “quicker”.

Maple is a much lighter and less dense wood than
hickory. Maple can provide the feel of a big stick without
the extra weight of a hickory stick. Maple sticks are
primarily used for light, fast playing in low volume
situations.
Thickness
Affects the durability and
overall weight of the stick, as
well as the “feel” of the stick
in the hand. Thicker sticks
are more durable and heavy,
while thinner models offer a
lighter, more sensitive feel.
Shoulder
Shoulder profile affects the
weight distribution of the
stick, and has an effect on the
sense of rebound.
Taper
Taper of the shoulder affects
the feel and performance of
a stick. A long taper provides
more flex and a greater
response, while a short taper
is stiffer and offers additional
strength.

In 1990 Vater launched its own line of “Vater Brand”
products, began marketing and gained major distribution.

How do
There are several things to keep in mind while you’re in
search of a drumstick that will best suit your playing style.
Straightness, density, tip shape, taper, length, wood type,
diameter and balance are all key factors in how a drumstick is
going to “feel” in your hands. Drummers may use a variety of
models to express a particular sound or mood in their playing
that they can’t get from using just one stick model. On this
page, we’ve given you a breakdown and explanation of all the
factors to consider when you are choosing which model to use.

Each Vater stick starts from a
raw dowel. Vater accepts only
the highest quality Hickory and
Maple dowels with a particular
moisture content reading from
wood suppliers.

Each stick is then rolled down
a set of steel pipes by a quality
control expert. Sticks that
are warped or have a mineral
streak/visual blemish are then
taken out and become 2nd
quality sticks. The sticks that
make it through are considered
1st quality... for now.

Vater’s sticks are cut on
back-knife lathes, set up and
overseen by Ron Vater. Each
stick model is turned from
it’s own steel knife designed
to the specifications and
measurements of that model.

Alan Vater then personally
re-rolls each and every stick
that made it through the first
rolling process on a pure black
surface. Alan removes every
stick that he comes across that
isn’t 100% straight.

Each stick is then put through
a delicate sanding process.
With machines custom
designed by Vater, each stick is
evenly sanded with impeccable
consistency.

Now worthy of the Vater name,
the sticks are then labeled on a
pad-printing machine. Silicone
pads apply pressure to a selfinking metal plate, etched with
the Vater logo and model name,
leaving the image on the pads.
The pads then come down and
apply the image to the stick.

The wood tips are shaped
using an extremely accurate
automated process. Each stick
is inserted into a cylinder in
which a size/shape specific
knife shapes the tip. The stick
is then released leaving a
perfectly shaped tip every time.
Nylon tips are applied using a
custom designed automated
machine built exclusively for Vater.
Each stick spins while glue is
applied evenly around the wood to
nylon tip contact surface area. The
tip is then forced on the stick with
a great amount of air compression,
leaving it permanently “locked” on
the stick.
Sticks are then put in a
revolving tumbler that evenly
applies the sealer and finish
coats. This process leaves
every stick with that famous
Vater finish.

Each stick is then put through
Vater’s computer pitch and
weight matching system. The
pitch and weight of each stick
is recorded and the stick is
placed into a designated bin.
Each stick within a specific
bin will have the same pitch
and weight as the others in the
same bin.
The sticks from each individual
bin are then color matched
in bar-coded sleeves, leaving
a perfectly pitch and weight
matched pair.
“Bricks” of 12 pair are then
shrink wrapped in plastic.
This dramatically decreases
the potential loss of moisture
content in the sticks, keeping
them straight. The sticks are
now ready to be put in stock
and ship.

The Cymbal Stick models, which were
originally designed and hand-turned
in the mid 1950's by Jack Adams

have been recreated. These Maple
models feature the same distinct tip shapes and specifications that gave drummers of the great
jazz and big band era that unforgettable cymbal sound. Same as the originals did decades
earlier, each of these four models gives their own unique voice on cymbals.

the Slick Nut doesn’t need to
be threaded on or off and won’t
loosen or fall off while you play.
Simply hold in the fastening
button, put Slick Nut on cymbal
stand to desired tightness and
release button. The Slick Nut can
also be used as a theft deterrent
by simply tightening the hex set
screw on the side of the body.
This makes the Slick Nut nonremovable, a great feature for
drummers who have to leave their
drum kits unattended for a period
