Carlyle Brown is a writer/
performer and artistic director
of Carlyle Brown & Company
based in Minneapolis. He has
received many awards, including
playwriting fellowships from the
Minnesota State Arts Board,
Jerome Foundation, National Endowment for
the Arts and Theatre Communications Group
and commissions from Alabama Shakespeare
Festival and Minneapolis Children’s Theatre
Company. Brown is a core member at Playwrights’
Center in Minneapolis and he is an alumnus of
New Dramatists in New York and a member
of the Dramatists Guild. He is on the board of
directors of The Playwrights’Center and Theatre
Communications Group, the national organization
for the non-profit professional theater, and the
Jerome Foundation. He is the 2006 recipient of
The Black Theatre Network’s Winona Lee Fletcher
Award for outstanding achievement and artistic
excellence and a 2008 Guggenheim Fellow.

A professional, multi-racial theatre promoting cultural pluralism and individual equality through artistic
excellence. Using theatre as a vehicle for artistry, entertainment, education, and social change, Mixed
Blood addresses the artificial barriers that keep people from succeeding in American society.
The theatre has been recognized for its artistic merit and political commitment with numerous awards,
including the 2009 Sally Irvine Award for Vision, MetLife Foundation 2007 Award for Excellence in
Arts Access, two 2006 Ivey Awards, the VSA Arts of Minnesota 2005 Arts Access Award, the MN Council
of Nonprofits 2004 Antiracism Initiative Mission Award, the Council on Black Minnesotans Dream Keeper
Award (1997), an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Minneapolis Commission on Civil Rights
(1995), The Minneapolis Foundation’s Diversity Award, Actors’ Equity’s Rosetta Le Noire Award (1990)
for “celebrating the universality of the human experience on the American stage,” and three Drama Critics
Circle Awards. Artistic Director Jack Reuler has received a 2009 Spirit Recognition Award from Actors’
Equity Association, a Lifetime Achievement Recognition at the 2006 Ivey Awards, the 2006 Local Legend
Award from the United Negro College Fund, the City’s Minneapolis Award, and Minneapolis Community
