DENTAL CLINIC AT
The LCV Dental Clinic serves as a preceptor site
for dental and dental hygiene students from the
VCU School of Dentistry. Students are able to
receive hands-on experience with state-of-the-art
equipment.

Partnerships & Community Volunteers Help Meet a Growing Need
The Growing Need
The Facility
Oral health can have a major impact on overall
health. Studies indicate that impaired oral health
can adversely affect diet, nutritional status, sleep
patterns, psychological status, social interactions
and other activities of life in older adults. (DeBaise &
Austin, 2003) Research supports a link between gum
disease and systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease (Genco, Offebacher & Beck, 2002), diabetes
(Gurenlian, 2006), bacterial pneumonia (Terpenning, 2005)
and Alzheimer’s disease (Watts, Crimmins & Gatz, 2008).
Lucy Corr Village houses the Dental Clinic at
no cost to the Dental Clinic. The LCV Dental
Clinic was renovated in 2012 and now
includes
• Three Examination/Treatment Rooms
• Office Space
• Laboratory
• Conference Room
• State-of-the-Art Dental Equipment
including on-site denture fabrication
• Wheelchair Accessible X-Ray equipment
The greater Richmond and Tri-Cities’ 65 and
over population is projected to increase by 81%
to 171,927 in 2020. Current estimates show that
over 50% of adults age 65 and over in the region
qualify for Medicare or Medicaid which do not
cover dental care.
Volunteer dentists each spend approximately four
hours a month in the clinic providing dental treatment, conducting bedside examinations or off-site
screening and overseeing dental students on rotation.

The LCV Dental Clinic’s professional staff
includes a part-time Clinic Coordinator and
Dental Assistant. Members of the greater
Richmond dental community donate their
time to treat patients and volunteer dentists
provide dental care and serve as External
Affiliate Instructors, supervising VCU Dental
School students.

School of Dentistry participate in weekly clinical rotations at the Dental Clinic under the supervison of the
dental coordinator, who is an Assistant Professor and
volunteer dentists serving as External Affiliate
Instructors.

Center are part of a continuing care retirement
community which includes independent living at
Springdale at Lucy Corr Village.
