Dear SJE Family,
Thank you for allowing me to be part of your family. Since
my arrival to the St. John Eudes parish in 2013, you have
welcomed me with an open Heart. You have walked with
me through my vocational discernment. Together we have
smiled, cried, and prayed for one another. Thank you for
your presence in my life. Thank you also for your continued
prayers and support. As I continue the journey towards the
priesthood, please continue to walk with me as together
we seek the will of God.
May the Virgin Mother bless you with her Divine Son. Amen

PRAYER FOR PRIESTS
“Hear this, you who trample upon the needy
and destroy the poor of the land! . . . The
Lord has sworn . . . Never will I forget a
thing they have done!” (Amos 8:4, 7)—
meaning anything unjust we’ve done. God’s
solemn, heart-chilling warning reaches us
through God’s social-justice prophet, Amos. If Amos’
message doesn’t sound like “Welcome to another Sunday
in the Jubilee Year of Mercy,” wait till we hear Luke’s
Jesus.
“No servant can serve two masters,” Jesus declares.
“[You] will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other” (Luke 16:13). How many
priorities and principles, ideas and identities, promises
and people press us daily for service? So both Amos and
Jesus warn us about living and working in today’s real
world, with real people, and on behalf of our real families,
“children of this world” but also children of God. How fine
the line between making a living and making a killing.
Making something or someone other than and less than
God into a god violates covenant and Gospel, sidetracks
our journey to God’s kingdom, and—as Amos and Jesus
warn us—jeopardizes our eternal life.
Yet hear how beautifully, precisely—indeed, blessedly
simply—Luke’s Jesus places the Gospel’s command and
the Jubilee Year of Mercy’s challenge before us: “The
person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also
trustworthy in great ones” (Luke 16:10). Advising Timothy
to pray “for everyone . . . for all in authority,” how well
Paul directs our personal prayer today, “that we may
lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity”
(1 Timothy 2:1, 2).

CHRISTIAN MEDITATION
Christian Meditation Sessions – Fall, 2016
Did you know that Catholics have a long tradition of
meditation? While other forms of meditation seek to
“empty the mind”, Christian meditation is an act of
engaging the mind in prayer.
Whether you already meditate or want to learn more about
Christian meditation, you are welcome to join the meditation
group the third Saturday of each month at 1:30pm.
The schedule for Fall is:
October 8, Grill Hall, Room C
November 12, Paula Montal Hall
December 15, Grill Hall, Room C
Men’s Fellowship
Saturdays this Fall at 6:30 a.m. in Grill Hall !!
Current material: This Fall we will be featuring a video
series called “Catholicism” that explores Church history in
a compelling and contemporary format. It is produced
and narrated by one of Los Angeles’ bishops, Robert
Barron. See his website:
(http://catholicism.wordonfire.org/) for details.
More details: It is not necessary for men to formally
“join” the group or commit to any amount of sessions.
Come give it a try and contact
Tim Dawson (818) 414-1674,
Jose Schnaider (818)-469-9040 or
Chad Rach 310-800-3530 with questions.
DEAR PARISHIONERS,
On the topic of Together in Mission, I am a happy pastor!
On August 16th we were at a distance of $13,446.58 from
our goal! 408 families have fully participated in this
program. It is so great to see that many families have put
poorer parishes and schools on their priority list.
We had a financial council meeting Tuesday, August 16,
2016, and we discussed ways to achieve our goal as soon
as possible. We decided to go to a second collection to
fill the gap between our parish goal and where we are
currently.
We will have the “One Single $ for TIM” campaign. This
idea came from one of our parish founder families. We
thought it was an excellent idea.
The challenge is having each person in attendance at all
of our services find a dollar for TIM until we hit the target.
We will celebrate the goal achievement soon.

DID YOU KNOW?
Bystander engagement is critical
to combat child abuse . . .
There are far too many cases in
which a child is too scared to report
abuse, and the adults around him or
her do not understand
the signs of abuse or
too afraid to speak up.
Bystanders have more
power than they know,
especially when it
comes to reporting abuse and protecting children. Young adults don’t
always have the opportunity or the
courage to speak up for themselves,
and the adults around them have a
duty to help out when they can. For

CHILD SHARE
Being pro life necessitates being pro-child. It means
that our commitment to life extends beyond the day
of a child’s birth and that we care for them when they
are in difficult situations.
On October 9 we have an opportunity to
learn how we as a parish can make a
commitment to life beyond a child’s day
of birth. Ember Ngur from Child
S.H.A.R.E. will be at St. John Eudes from
12:15 to 1:15pm in the AB room for a
foster care awareness event. Child
S.H.A.R.E founded by a parishioner from Westwood
Presbyterian Church in 1985, partners with families, individuals and volunteers, primarily from local faith communities, to recruit, train and support foster families.
Our parish has a wonderful history of foster parenting and
we celebrate that legacy and acknowledge the generosity
and open hearts of foster families in our parish. But the
need for foster parents is on-going. Last year 16 children
from Chatsworth were put in foster care and about 100
times a day a child in California is placed in foster care.
While you may not feel you have the ability to be a foster
parent at this time, there are other ways you can help.
Whether providing babysitting assistance, preparing a
welcome package for foster parents, bringing a meal,
sponsoring outings, or learning how to be an advocate for
children in the court system, you have talents and gifts to
share. So please come and learn how you can help.
To RSVP for this event please email

Adultos).
