Locally owned and operated, Totalspan is part of the Spanbild Group - a private, New Zealand owned, Christchurch based, international building company. KEEPING IT LOCAL All Totalspan buildings are made in New Zealand. Using locally sourced materials, every structural building component - as well as steel cladding and roofing - is engineered to precise specifications at Totalspan’s Christchurch factory. With full in-house expert design and engineering capability, Totalspan utilises the latest technology to continuously test and improve buildings to meet local building standards, delivering customised building solutions to meet the needs of a broad range of applications and market sectors. Each building is predominantly prefabricated in Totalspan’s Christchurch factory, utilising the latest computer-controlled production processes. This enables Totalspan to have complete control over every stage of the building process - ensuring every product meets rigorous quality standards. Totalspan is committed to supporting the local community, maintaining production and management locally, and investing in the capabilities of local people. STRONG HARD WORKING BUILDINGS The strength of Totalspan’s buildings is evident in every element of the structure. Framed in solid steel, each Totalspan building features thick galvanised steel connector plates, fixed with bolts through pre-punched holes to provide the strongest possible connections. High tensile steel roof and wall cladding is also roll-formed in wider sheets than industry standard - resulting in fewer joints and faster construction. Each building also has a standard 15-degree roof pitch, to provide greater structural strength and durability, as well as more usable height. With a dedicated research and development team, and a programme of continual product and process development, Totalspan maintains a standard of design and manufacturing excellence that is continually relevant to changing building codes and regulations. Every fitting and feature has been carefully designed to stand up to New Zealand conditions, ensuring the durability and long-lasting strength of each building, and making Totalspan the leading choice for steel garages, barnhouses, sheds and commercial buildings. FROM THE BLACK SANDS OF THE WEST COAST The origin of Totalspan’s steel buildings lie in the black sands of the North Island’s west coast beaches, stretching from the Kaipara Harbour to Wanganui. Through further processing, it is then converted into molten iron. The subsequent addition of selected alloys converts the iron into steel. The ironsand (titanomagnetite) was formed through the breakdown of rocks originating from volcanic activity in Taranaki 2.5 million years ago. Over time, the heavy, dark sands were transported by ocean currents and deposited on beaches. The steel is cast into slabs, hot rolled into coil, then cold rolled to the required thickness, coated with a zinc/ aluminium alloy, coated and painted. It is this steel product that we use to manufacture quality buildings at our Christchurch factory. From the 1850s, many people tried to extract iron from the ironsands to make steel, with little success. In the late 1960s, New Zealand Steel pioneered the direct reduction process for reducing iron oxide (ironsand) into metallic iron. At the New Zealand Steel Waikato North Head plant, ironsands are magnetically separated before the concentrated liquid, or ‘slurry’, is pumped underground through an 18km pipeline - the first of its kind in the world - north to New Zealand Steel’s Glenbrook steel making site. The slurry is dewatered and the ironsand is mixed with coal. Each year, New Zealand Steel produces around 600,000 tonnes of steel and is the only mill in the world to make steel from ironsands. THE BENEFITS OF TOTALSPAN STEEL • Steel won’t mould or rust, and is not compromised by extreme weather conditions. • Steel buildings can be manufactured quickly, using modular, prefabricated, build-on-site and transportable methods. • Steel offers versatility and flexibility - in design, during construction and in use. • Steel is environmentally friendly, with unique environmental benefits, including product longevity, recyclability, easy transportation and relocation, and less raw material wastage. • Steel is non-combustible - it won’t burn. • Steel can be engineered to meet heavy seismic loads - providing extra strength to meet earthquake standards. • Steel is hypoallergenic and supports the creation of the healthiest possible living environment. From our locally sourced raw materials to our locally owned and operated franchises, Totalspan is proud to be Kiwi-made. OUR PREFERRED PARTNERS Totalspan chooses to partner with the best companies in the business - using the scale of its supply network to deliver both quality and affordability to customers. COMMUNITY At Totalspan, we believe in supporting the communities that support our business. In 2008, we launched the Totalspan Undercover Kids Programme, a nationwide initiative designed to help keep Kiwi kids safe - and dry - while they wait for the school bus. The programme enables local communities to apply for a purpose-built school bus shelter for children waiting for buses on rural school bus routes. The shelters are specifically designed to protect children from the elements and passing traffic, while also ensuring high visibility. Totalspan has supplied over four hundred shelters across New Zealand, investing in the safety of Kiwi kids around the country. The project has also seen the development of a strong community partnership, with Totalspan working alongside local councils, the New Zealand Police, the Ministry of Education, the New Zealand Transport Authority and local communities to manage the programme. Our franchises are also involved in local sponsorships to help individuals and groups achieve their goals. Paul was very approachable and helpful, and he really is a pleasure to work with. Most importantly, Totalspan offers a good system. It has certainly worked for us.” Darron Hammond, Whangarei Dan and Glenda Tyrrell were looking for a building that could stand up to the strong winds in their location, and for a company they could work with closely to achieve their dream design. “When choosing a design for our build in New Plymouth we went out for three quotes and Totalspan were friendly and co-operative in assisting us with our design. We are glad that we upgraded to a ‘high wind zone’ specification for the building as we have experienced winds in excess of 100kph a couple times and the building has handled these winds with no problems. The build was completed on budget, on time, with no hidden costs and we are very happy with the finished result.” Dan and Glenda Tyrrell, New Plymouth “Totalspan were really on the ball. They answered all my questions and got the job completed on time and on budget.” RESIDENTIAL The unique style of Totalspan’s modular design, combined with the ability to tailor building components at the manufacturing stage, provides real flexibility when looking for a residential building solution - from storage facilities and garages, to carports and utility sheds, and everything in between. And now, Totalspan offers a new way of living, with the Totalspan Barnhouse range. The Barnhouse range can be customised to suit your needs – from a working farm homestead, to the relaxed ambience of a seaside bach, or the cosiness of warm family living. Taking advantage of stunning harbour views, extra living space, and a beautiful kitchen were priorities when Cindy Vincent contacted Totalspan about building a Barnhouse. “From the concrete placers to the electricians, plumbers and building crew, everyone was really great to work with and always accessible to answer any questions. We got the storage we needed, and then some, and a proper home - with a view! We wake up and can look across the harbour from our bed, then come downstairs to still more “I found the buying process really good. Unlike other building companies who showed no interest, Totalspan stunning views out over the water. It’s like being on holiday every day. had all information on hand and were extremely helpful. I Gary, from Totalspan, has a kitchen design background that needed resource consent which took time but once granted enabled us to fit everything we wanted for our kitchen into the building went up really quickly and I would be happy to the space, without making it overcrowded. recommend Totalspan Westgate, without hesitation.” I can’t believe how spacious it feels.” Malcolm Gee, Avondale Cindy Vincent, Northland “One of the things I really appreciated about Totalspan was working with friendly people that I could trust!” RURAL As a local company, Totalspan works alongside New Zealand farmers to develop a range of farm buildings that perform best in the local environment and the extremes of local weather conditions. Hard working and hard wearing, every Totalspan farm building is built to stand up to anything rural life can throw at it. The unique open span framework and modular design gives you all the room you need, making the Totalspan range ideal for any job on the farm – from stabling and storage, to workshop, garage and even workers quarters. As part of a new dairy development in the central North Island, Totalspan Manawatu were approached to build a large shed, housing a rotary dairy milking platform, by the project’s main contractors, ABC.com Construction. The first stage of the process saw Totalspan Manawatu working alongside Totalspan’s in-house design team to create the purpose-built, 22-metre long by 22-metre wide shed, designed to specification to house a 60-bale rotary. “Our new Totalspan shed is very sound – it’s an excellent building. And the fact that the single span construction enabled them to put it in place over such a large platform is just fantastic. The additional features, such as the birdproofing, and the finishings are all top quality – and even the colour fits in very well in a rural environment. Of course, it is a very big building, but it just works in so well.” Bill Hare, Cheltenham Brent Jury is not only a capable client but a very discerning client. He had a number of sheds previously and knew exactly what he wanted from Totalspan. “I have recently had one of your sheds constructed and couldn’t be happier. No centre poles make a huge difference to the usable space. With its clean lines and tidy construction it’s the sharpest shed I’ve ever had (and I’ve had a few). Initially I compared Totalspan closely to other steel sheds and to pole sheds which I can construct myself. I chose Totalspan. Your staff were extremely helpful throughout, especially at the start helping with layouts and levels as I was doing the boxing and the pre-pour preparation myself. You have a good team and a great product and I have already recommended Totalspan to a friend who is thinking of a shed in the near future”. Brent Jury, North Canterbury “Quality and performance are vital when it comes to protecting our stock and our business. Totalspan really came to the party for us.” COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL When you need a building that works as hard as you, Totalspan has the right selection of buildings for any operation – or you can work with the Totalspan team to create a purpose-built design. From factory to showroom, storage unit to helicopter hanger, Totalspan means business, right around New Zealand. Totalspan’s dedicated range of steel buildings and sheds includes a selection of widths and heights to accommodate all types of machinery and the option to customise or add on to each building with a wide variety of additional options and accessories - from cabling and lighting, to a choice of door widths, partitions and special features. In early 2011, Waikato Diocesan School for Girls Property Manager, Rosalie McGowan, approached Totalspan Hamilton with a brief for a large multi-use complex. A 21 metre wide by 30 metre long building was customised to incorporate internal workshops, office facilities, a lunchroom and school laundry, as well as space for kayak and general storage. “Totalspan were the obvious choice for the build. Before the project got underway, we requested quotes from six different companies and also talked to a number of people in the community. Totalspan’s name came up time and time again, and we found their price was very competitive. From day one, the crew were absolutely amazing - they all came to work with smiles on their faces and were always approachable. Their standard of workmanship was first class. We are absolutely delighted with the building. Totalspan have done a fantastic job.” Waikato Diocesan School for Girls, Hamilton Jim Savigny was after a professional-looking building with real street appeal. Someone to work with who would take care of every detail, leaving him free to get on with business. “With Dave’s (Totalspan, Dunedin) understanding of building requirements and his capability to interpret my needs he soon presented me with options that I could fine tune with him. He then arranged the required permits, the subcontractors and oversaw the project. The clear span allows me to store my product right to the outer edges and the clear panels in the roof within the bays give plenty of light to work in. The view from the street gives the rightful impression of a class building with sharp lines promoting the aesthetic value that makes me proud to have installed one on my property, and I regularly receive compliments on a “good looking building.” Jim Savigny, Dunedin “What I needed was really quite specific. Totalspan provided a solution that took care of everything I was looking for.” PURPOSE-BUILT DESIGN With an extensive series of designs and sizes, Totalspan offers limitless options. Working with expert designers in the company’s local factory, Totalspan’s expert project team can create a total building design, specifically tailored to individual needs. When Steam Incorporated, who restore and maintain former New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, needed a home for twenty historic railway carriages they approached Totalspan. The resulting all-weather shelter now protects the lovingly restored locomotives at this historic site. “Totalspan’s ability to design and build a complete solution was very important to our volunteer organisation. To be able to select a colour and design for the new shed that satisfied the stringent demands of the Historic Places Trust was also important. We are currently exploring an extension to the new shed, as well as a purpose-built carriage restoration shed, with Totalspan, adding more facilities to a site which aims to provide a fascinating insight into a by-gone era of travel for thousands of visitors every year. Coming from a construction background I appreciate the quality of the workmanship and service from Totalspan. We’re very happy with what they achieved.” Peter Norman Deputy President, Steam Incorporated Lockbox Storage approached Totalspan North Canterbury for a purpose built storage facility. The custom designed 21 metre wide by 47 metre long building contains 48 storage units. The internal storage units range from 3 square metres to 30 square metres. This means Lockbox is able to provide their customers with a range of storage options. The custom designed Totalspan building was completed within an 8 week period. “Totalspan North Canterbury were able to deliver when push came to shove. Building is a challenging industry and Totalspan were able to deliver and meet our strict deadlines for the project. We set a tight timeframe of October to January and Totalspan performed under pressure and deliver even with all the red tape from councils and other industries. My experience with dealing with Totalspan was very professional, responsive to my requests and found their office and site staff very knowledgable. The Totalspan team were very skilled and motivated to please. I decided to build with Totalspan as their prices were very competitive and they offered ideal design/materials for our purpose. Totalspan’s workmanship was consistently good. There were many positive aspects to using Totalspan, durability, clear span, multi shaped internals and tidy look to name a few. Overall the building met our requirements, it is ideal for our business and purpose.” John Coers - Director of Lock Box Storage Which building solution is right for me?
