I’ve had a post-it on my notebook that says, “Wallride
Intro and Photo” that’s been making me insane. I can’t
figure out what this introduction page is suppose to be
anymore. The first time I took it on, I wrote about my
apartment manager coming to take a look at my fridge
only to have a piece of toilet paper with actual human
crap on it, fall out of his pant leg. That got me thinking
about that apartment right on the water and how much I
loved that place. I thought about writing about how I had
lived there peacefully for eight years and then let one of
the team riders live there when I moved out. I received an
eviction notice within two weeks after the door got kicked
down and there was a picture of ODB stuck up on the
wall with electrical tape. That seemed like a downer of a
story and made me think about a happier team story. So
I thought about writing about driving down the 210 with
Guy talking about how when his hair gets to a certain
length, he looks like the fifth Beatle and how he wasn’t
going to worry about it right then. But that seems like all
I could tell you about that story without crying. And then I
thought about crying and how Spike recently pointed out
that he, Mike and I have really learned to talk about our
feelings but Rickk was still holding out. It seemed lame
to write about the three of us being more evolved then
Rickk.
So I decided to look through photos when I found
this one of Mike and Rickk at Ty’s wedding. I looked at it
for a while and thought Spike might just be misinformed.
If we can’t tell how much Rickk loves you with the half
hug, palm open and kiss to the forehead, that may be
our problem, not Rickk’s. It might be a primitive way of
expression, but it’s pretty awesome.

SEAN MALTO
SPIKE JONZE
Creighton Barrett of BAND OF HORSES
ALEX OLSON
VINCENT ALVAREZ
ANTHONY PAPPALARDO
What’s going on with that hair?
I don’t know dude, it’s getting long though.
What’s going on with that hair?
Spike Jonze.
One of the main monsters in the movie is named
Carol. Is he anything like our Carroll?
They have similar tendencies towards neurosis.
They’re both sensitive.
Is Malto giving you a run for your money for best
hair on the team?
No! Let’s not get crazy. But he does run the blow cut
hard.
How was it to be crowned King of LA last year?
It felt a little weird to me. The minute they were announcing the winners they said that they were going to split the money between me and some other
skater, but the other skater was going to take the title.
It was crazy! I was like, man just give him the title and
let me go home. I didn’t like that at all. A title or status
is no concern to me I guess.
What’s your favorite street in New York?
The one that has my apartment on it.
Which trick in particular causes your locks to
get in your face?
Pretty much every trick. I’m cutting it soon.
With some of you being skaters how does it feel
to be so accepted by the skate community?
Well, growing up skating I would of probably hated
us. But now, I hate the kids that like us. All jokes
aside, it’s been really amazing and a total, radical
surprise.
How was moving from West Covina, CA to Georgia when you were in high school?
At first, it really really sucked. I was going to be away
from a lot of different people that I used to skate with,
but I still didn’t let any of the bullshit of trying to fit in
get to me. Way more green, way less mean.
When was the last time you had a slice from
your father’s pizzeria?
All the time, my brother just bought a house out in
Long Island, so I’ve been helping him out with the
move and lunch is usually my dad’s pizza and Dunkin’
Donuts coffee.
Did you skate out there?
Oh yeah. Skating out there was probably like one of
the funniest times I had doing it. Of course the spots
were a lot different but I adjusted to them and it was
very very fun while doing so.
How’s the woodshop?
Good times. It’s more just like my garage or basement that’s 30 blocks away from my apt.
Outside of you, who’s got the best hair on Girl
right now?
BA has a sweet fade.
How often do you talk to Mike Mo?
I talk to him like few times a month unless I’m in
California. He usually yells at me for not staying at
his house.
What do kids think when they hear you’re from
Kansas?
They kinda trip out. I had some kids ask what
ocean I’m by.
Ever think of relocating to Torrance?
I’ve thought about relocating somewhere in California but haven’t figured out where yet.
Who else got the Sean Malto sponsor me video?
Jamie Thomas got it at a demo in Kansas City.
What’s your favorite genre of music?
I like it all.
What happened to that guitar that McCrank
gave you?
I let my mom borrow it and she left it at a hotel.
Sorry Rick.
What’s been your favorite graphic you’ve had so
far?
Big Bear malt liquor board for sure.
What’s harder, coming up with graphic ideas or
answering these questions?
These questions. I feel like an idiot answering
them.
Are you going to have a part in the Chocolate
video?
I hope so. If Ty lets me.
Who taught you to hardflip?
This kid Bryce down the street from my house. He
kept telling me I was doing them wrong cause the
board didn’t go straight between my legs.
But who could switch flip better?
I’d say the character’s from the movies feet are too
big to switch flip.
Who on Girl would play Max the best?
Mikey might play the best Max also. He can be both
very sensitive and can be very wild if you catch him
on the right night.
Where there any similarities between the making of Where the Wild Wild Things Are and Fully
Flared?
They both took four years. They both had a fair
amount of stress. And they both have things exploding in them.
While filming out in Australia did you skate at
all?
Not that much because we were so busy. We were
in Melbourne which was pretty fun city to skate
around. I went to one park with two bowls that was
really fun.
Did you know Guy would be skating to your
songs?
I didn’t find out until people started texting me,
“Dude, congrats on the Lakai vid!” and I was like, “I
didn’t even think I got my footy in on time.” Then I
realized they were talking about our songs. It’s probably one of the coolest things to ever happen to us. I
mean its Guy Mariano.”
Who else from the skate community has shown
their support for what you guys do?
Our dear friend Travis Graves kinda set it all off by
introducing us to Dill a few years back and then the
next thing you know, we had all sorts of pro skaters
drinking our beer backstage.
The third album is a big deal for any band. Are
you guys nervous?
Nervous? No. Scared? Yes.
What’s the significance of the mermaid on the
board?
Mermaids are the skaters of the sea.
When is the moving coming out?
October 16th, 2009.
Who’s gonna be the baddest band of ’09?
What the fuck is an ’09?
Is it going to be as good as Video Days?
I can’t see how it could be. It doesn’t have Mark
Gonzales in it.
What are the perks of playing shows on tour
rather than doing demos on tour?
No product toss and kids not asking us if we’re too
old to skate.
Any idea what you’ll be doing next?
The Chocolate video.
If you could have any other skater skate to one
of your songs who would it be?
That’s a really tough one. Dill was really into one
of our songs off the second record, so we almost
named it,”Dill’s song.” Gonz would be insane. The
ATL kids (Brock, Clark, and Taylor). Zach and Bobby
I D.C., our hometown hero, Sabback. Definitely
Obama because he’s got a mean flat ground game.
What’s it mean to be a son of a Dagger?
It means I can go to Venice and skate the pit with
Snake.
Why is driving all the way to San Diego for a
wave machine worth it, but driving all the way to
SD for a skate spot not worth it?
Well that’s a very easy question. water doesn’t hurt.
Oh and I’m sorry but I hate skating in SD.
What’s your best trick on the wave machine?
Falling. I can’t even ride the damn thing.
Who’s your favorite comedian?
David Cross.
What’s the most confusing thing about a
woman?
They’re all insane and the young ones in LA are
dumb.
Looking back it his video parts, what is your
favorite phase of dress for Carroll?
I think I would now say the second FTC video but
when I was younger I probably would have said
the Transworld video.
How’s having your own place?
It’s great! I don’t have to deal with anyone. I don’t
have deal with another person’s mess. I can get really
weird and bored as well. It’s all a boy could wish for.
Who’s your most frequent houseguest?
The mailman or the ex girl when she wasn’t my ex.
What kind of stuff?
A lot of indoor and transitions.
Which ex-Chocolate team rider would you want
back on the team?
To tell you the truth, I would like to see every one of
Chocolate ex-riders still on the team. Gabriel Rodriguez would be nice.
What’s up with your boy Cornbread?
Cornbread is one of the craziest individuals that I have
ever met. It’s crazy because he knows what he has to
do to survive, yet he still loves skateboarding so much
that he’ll still do nollie heelflip indy grab to nosegrind or
any other weird trick that he can get his hands on.
Did he really win the Lottery?
I remember the day that I got back from Woodward,
he was at the airport to pick me up. He told me that
we don’t have to worry about nothing any more, and
showed me of proof or documentation out of his
pocket that said that he was going to receive earnings
of 250,000 dollars to his address. I couldn’t believe it,
but sure enough he vanished a couple weeks after he
told me. He said that he was going to buy us all Gucci
suits and take a group photo. It’s crazy because after
that, he still asked me for an application at the place
that I previously worked at.
How’s filming for the Chocolate video going?
Filming for the Chocolate is going excellent. It’s just
like it should be. No pressure, no rules, just skateboarding, and someone there to document it.
Were you ever told to move to California?
No, I was never asked to move out to California, but
who knows maybe one day I’ll be fortunate enough
to keep my place in NY, get a little space out there,
and run the bi-coastal thing.
What have you been making?
Top-secret experimental prototype decks for Rickk.
What do you listen to while you’re working?
Stern, NYU DR. Radio, and NPR.
What does working in the shop give you that
skating doesn’t?
A place to go when I’m not skating that’s not a bar or
a comfortable desk with a Internet connection. Skating still gives me a lot of what I need.
Did you ever get a nickname when you skated
in Philly?
Pre-Philly was Mr. Burns.
Whose got your favorite jump into the Love
fountain?
Not sure, maybe just watching Kalis trying nollies into
it one day. He never landed it, but it probably looked
a lot better than some of the tricks that made into
that thing. Sometimes the bails by certain people are
more enjoyable to watch than other people’s makes.
Have you met Vincent yet?
Yeah, he’s super sick, he could fit on any era of
Chocolate.
What’s your earliest memory of Chocolate
skateboards?
Gino, Kennan, and Chico looking smooth as usual,
Paulo having one of my favorite video parts. Nollie
nose manual a table.
When’s the next time you’ll be out in California?
Chocolate premiere!
