AN INTERNATIONAL FAME
A MEDIEVAL CITY NESTLED IN A
PROTECTED NATURE SURROUNDING
Because of its rich, dense and exceptional heritage,
Conques benefits from an important fame.

At the end of the 8 century, a hermit named Dadon
settled alone in this place, then in wilderness, to
embrace religion. It was the beginning of what would
become the first monastery of Benedictine monks.
With the arrival of the relics of Saint Foy (Faith)
brought from Agen in 866 by a monk of Conques, the
location became a pilgrimage site and, later on, an
important stopping place on the route to Santiago de
Compostela. The worship towards Saint Foy gained
all the western Christendom. Donations in favor of the
monastery multiplied.
A city encircled by ramparts developed little by little

around the monastery in the 12 century. With its
fortified gateways, the Romanesque fountains, the
framed houses, Conques is nowadays classified among
the Plus Beaux Villages de France.
The remoteness of the site, the topography and the
rules regarding protection saved Conques from
ungraceful constructions. Because of them all, Conques
benefits from a national and international important
fame, first due to the density of exceptional heritage
contents.

A TREASURE OF MEDIEVAL
GOLDSMITH’S ART WITH AN
UNEQUALLED SPIRITUAL AND
ARTISTIC INFLUENCE
This Treasure is composed of numerous reliquaries,
covered of gold, silver, enamel, cameos, intaglios and
precious stones, among which stands the Majesty of
Saint Foy, the unique witness of statue-reliquaries from
the years 1000. The Treasure of Conques is one of the
five major European Medieval Goldsmith’s art Treasures.
It is considered the unique and richest one in France
assembling many artifacts from the High Middle Ages.

A REFERENCE IN MATTER OF
CONTEMPORARY ART
The stained-glass windows by Pierre Soulages, a
contemporary painter, famous on the international
scene, were ordered by the Ministry of Culture and
inaugurated in 1994. They respect, while enhancing it,
the Romanesque architecture of the building and
invite a modulated light to enter the church.
During the 12
century, Conques was already
considered an important stop on the Via Podiensis.
Since 1998, the abbey-church of Sainte Foy and the
bridge over the river Dourdou are registered in the
World Heritage List by the UNESCO for the Routes
to Santiago in France.
Guided tours are possible with the Service
Patrimoine to discover this major contemporary
art creation.

ROUTES OF SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA IN FRANCE, A
WORLD HERITAGE
Throughout the Middle Ages Santiago de Compostela was the supreme goal for
countless thousands of pious pilgrims who converged there from all over Europe. To
reach Spain pilgrims had to pass through France. Four symbolic roads starting from
Paris, Vezelay, Le Puy and Arles, all reaching the crossing of the Pyrenees,
synthetize the uncountable trails used by travellers of old times. Pilgrim churches or
simple sanctuaries, hospitals, bridges, road crosses mark out the pilgrimage roads
and are the witnesses of their spiritual and material aspects. The pilgrimage, first a
spiritual exercise and faith demonstration, touched also the profane world as it
played a key role in the birth and flow of new ideas and the arts.
In 1998 the cultural entity “Routes to Santiago de Compostela in France” was
registered in the World Heritage List by the UNESCO for its outstanding universal
value. By this mean, UNESCO recognized the great historical and spiritual value of
these pilgrims’ quest set on these roads.
This listing counts a collection of 71 buildings and 7 trails portions as an illustration
of the routes the “jacquets” (Santiago’s pilgrims) took towards the Pyrenees and,
past the mountains, towards the tomb of Saint James in Spain (Finistere area). In
Conques, the abbey-church Saint Foy and the bridge above the river Dourdou are
listed in this collection.
THE WORLD HERITAGE FOR HUMANITY
The convention concerning the protection of the world natural and cultural heritage
was adopted in 1972 between the States and the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Its duty is to ensure the
identification, protection, conservation, presentation and transmission to future
generations of the natural and cultural heritage. The heritage registered in the list
represents an invaluable and irreplaceable treasure for the Humanity. The main
objective of the heritage conservation is to highlight and to preserve the human
cultural diversity and its environment. The purpose of the action in favor of heritage
preservation is to promote peace through the conservation of cultural diversities and
dialogue between cultures beyond differences.
In 2015, France counted 41 “cultural or natural sites” among the registered sites in
the World Heritage List.

Since 1987, the former pilgrimage routes to Compostela have been recognized as
a cultural route by the Council of Europe.

Guided tours are possible all year round for groups with a reservation and every day, for the individuals, from April to October and school holidays. These tours are led by
professional guides from the municipality Service Patrimoine of Conques (located in the Tourist Office). These guided tours may be held in French, English or Spanish for
groups with a reservation or for individuals upon inquiry and availability. The guides are also trained to adapt their tours to disabled clients (physical, mental and visual).
TYMPANUM/ABBEY-CHURCH AND MEDIEVAL GOLDSMITH’S ART TREASURE

This guided tour, the most requested by groups, focuses on Conques history, the abbey-church (architecture,

sculpture and contemporary stained-glass windows by Pierre Soulages), the famous 12 century Tympanum of the
Last Judgment and the Medieval Goldsmith’s Art Treasure with the precious Majesty of Saint Foy and other major
reliquaries. This tour also includes the visit of Joseph-Fau Museum.

This guided tour does not include the visit of the Treasure. However, the important historical and artistic elements
about Conques will be presented to you including the Tympanum of the Last Judgment.

ABBEY-CHURCH “TRIBUNES” (UPPER-GALLERY) - ROMANESQUE CAPITALS

This tour is one of the most looked for by visitors, since it allows you to reach the second level of the church, closer
to the Romanesque capitals. It also offers a spectacular view on the perspective of the church.

Discover the medieval city of Conques, its narrow streets, its picturesque history, its specific architecture, past and

THE MEDIEVAL GOLDSMITH’S ART TREASURE – THE UNAVOIDABLE VISIT

This Treasure is one of the five major Medieval Goldsmith’s Art Treasures in Europe and cannot be missed. It is the richest in France

as it displays many artifacts from the High Middle Ages. Beside the extraordinary Majesty of Saint Foy (9 century), it gathers many
reliquaries, coffers and portable altars like the A dit de Charlemagne, the châsse dite de Pépin... The visit of the Treasure is not
guided for individuals (only for groups with a reservation).
An information leaflet will be given to you to facilitate this discovery. The entrance ticket is also for the Museum Joseph-Fau.

BY NIGHT – PIPE ORGAN PLAY AND LIGHT SHOW FROM THE UPPER-GALLERY

This visit is not guided and is programmed from May to the end of September (except during major Festival concerts). It
can be arranged with a special reservation for a group during the low season (on certain conditions). The visit allows you
to discover the Romanesque capitals and the stained-glass windows by Pierre Soulages while listening to music and
enjoying the modulation of lights.

THE VINEYARDS OF
LOCATION
The vineyard AOP Marcillac spreads on 200 hectares between Conques and Rodez, in the department of Aveyron. It is set on multiple
terraces at the intersection of the limestone plateau (Causse) and the red sandstone soil (Rougier). All its specific and unique aromas come
from this location.
HISTORY OF THE VINEYARD
The destiny of this vineyard is linked to the history of this area. The monks of
Conques founded numerous priories and churches during the Middle-Ages in
many places and tamed the soils. They might be at the origin of the development
of this culture for this area. Later on the nobility of Rodez, the Counts of Rouergue,

made its fame until it almost disappeared in the early 20 century because of the
parasites. Since 1960 a few men decided to resuscitate it with hard labor, giving its
international recognition as AOC, a label finally granted in 1990.
THE VINEYARDS OF MARCILLAC IN NUMBERS

cellar represents 60% of the AOC, the
difference is made by 13 independent growers)

THE VALLON – A PRECIOUS LAND UNDER A MICROCLIMATE
Three climates meet here (semi-continental, oceanic and Mediterranean) with a strong temperature difference between day and night. The ideal
conditions are gathered to allow this grape variety called Mansois or Fer servadou. This grape variety is from the family of the Carmenets. It is used at
90% in our wines, the warranty of its uniqueness.
A WINE WITH A STRONG IDENTITY, A VINEYARD FROM AVEYRON
This deep red wine with purple gleams has strong wild black fruit aromas or spicy notes. To the taste, they offer a nice acidity carrying fine tannins but
not too overwhelming. They can be appreciated while young but have a good ability to age (3 to 5 years depending on the vintage for the red raised in
vat and 8 to 10 years for the barrel ones). They can get a complex aroma evoking licorice or cocoa, with color and freshness still present.
The beautiful bright colored rosé presents a deep raspberry tint with a fresh fruit aroma. They must be drunk within two years.
A WINE OF TRADITIONS
Not to miss: The Fête de la “Saint-Bourrou” to honor the bud of the vine (Bourrou = bud in Occitan) on the Monday of Pentecost day, in

Marcillac (May 16 , 2016) and the Wine Fair in Marcillac (Foire aux vins) on Friday August 12 , 2016. It's the occasion to meet all the
winegrowers of the AOC in a friendly atmosphere.

THE AOP MARCILLAC WINE ROAD
This wine road is a Departement initiative to promote the four Aveyron AOC vineyards and the Vins de Pays de l’Aveyron. Implemented in 2009 by the Chambre
d’agriculture de l’Aveyron, the Marcillac vineyards have now their own road signs to guide the visitors until the winegrowers’ cellars. These men and women within this initiative
accept to welcome visitors in their cellars and to share their knowledge. They signed a chart of quality in this regard. The specific graphic road signs were developed by the
Departement and relates to five vineyards in Aveyron: Entraygues-le Fel, Estaing, Côtes de Millau, Marcillac and the Vins de pays de l’Aveyron.
THE LABEL “VIGNOBLES ET DÉCOUVERTES”
The wine road is the first step towards the labeling “Vignobles et découverte”, a label the Tourist Office of Conques-Marcillac is
joining in. This label is given for 3 years to a touristic and wine-making structure offering a wide range of touristic offers multiple
and complementary (lodging, restaurants, cellars visits, wine tasting, museum, events,…), facilitating the organization of visitors stays and directing them towards qualified and
of quality services.

LANDSCAPES AND COLOURS A GEOLOGICAL MEETING PLACE
The land of the Communauté de Communes Conques-Marcillac
(Conques, Grand-Vabre, Noailhac, Saint-Cyprien-sur-Dourdou, SaintFélix de Lunel, Sénergues, Nauviale, Pruines, Mouret, Muret-le-Château,
Marcillac-Vallon, Saint-Christophe-Vallon, Valady, Clairvaux d’Aveyron,
Balsac and Salles-la-Source) is the result of the chaotic geological times.
It presents particular landscapes by strong identities. While travelling
through this land shaped by two main rivers, the Dourdou and the Lot, the
visitor will be surprised by the nature of the soils, their rich color palette
also found in the traditional constructions.

Downstream, around Conques, the Dourdou and its tributaries
carved deep valleys inside the schistose rock. In Conques area,
slopes on the shaded side host the chestnut trees. The sécadous /
secadors, small isolated constructions, were then used to smoke
and dry the chestnuts.
The schistose houses provide a sense of harmony to the sites.
These dwellings, built on the slopes, exhibit pretty framed facades,
topped with the traditional sharp-angled roof covered of lauzes
and opened by dormer windows.
The wooded slopes rise up onto the granite plateau of
Sénergues, Saint-Félix de Lunel and their bocage atmosphere.
The granite is difficult to cut and gives here a rustic and massive
aspect to the constructions offering a certain "mountain" charm to
the villages of the high plateau.

THE CAUSSE COMTAL
THE VALLON OR ROUGIER OF
MARCILLAC

The Vallon (small valley) or Rougier de Marcillac stays
under a mild climate allowing the culture of vineyards and
fruit trees.
Everywhere, the red sandstone lightens up the landscape and the villages. The
high peaks (Cayla, Kaymard, Panat peaks), the chapels perched high (Saint-Jean
le Froid, Servières), the cliffs from the Causse (limestone plateau) offer superb
points of view.
Since the Middle-Ages, the abbey-church
of Conques favored a specific vine from
this land, the Mansois or fer servadou.
Marcillac wine quickly acquired its fame
all around Rouergue and Auvergne, and
even further. Today classified AOP, it
gets successful even overseas.
In the valleys of Grand Combe or Cruou,
charming manors or vineyards houses
from the former Rodez nobility or
burgesses punctuate the landscape.

This karstic plateau was formed by the marine
sediments from the secondary Era. These steppe
landscapes punctuated by juniper bushes alternate with
green meadows set on calcareous clay outcrops.
To the curious traveler, this karstic relief displays areas
of hollows or dolines with clay-layered soil ideal for
cultures, outcrops and ruin-like relief, gorges and
canyons, a few swallow holes and subterranean rivers,
springs and resurgence.
Since the ancient times, this land made of poor soil is
the land of the sheep, except on the calcareous clay
outcrops, where the noble cereals, fodder crops and
cow breeding thrive.
Its human occupation dates back from Prehistory. This
land is rich in megalith, more specifically dolmen.
The rural settlements, nowadays much scattered, hold
their characteristics from the Causse typical
architecture: main body of farm quite imposing at times,
some monumental sheepfold, pigeon-towers, breadovens still covered with lauzes, fortified Cistercian
granary-towers, medieval keeps and their military
architecture often remodeled during Renaissance.

THE MAJOR SITES TO VISIT

Its waterfall is one of the most beautiful resurgence of the Departement.
An impressive collection of castles or fortified houses set on a three-leveled village: SaintPaul in the down part, Saint-Laurent in the middle and Salles in the upper part.
The Musée du Rouergue, Arts et Métiers traditionnels, within the walls of a former
linen and wool mill, exhibits traditional tools and techniques from old times.

Two Romanesque churches: Saint-Paul church has a 12 century Romanesque
Crucifixion in polychromic wood. Another good Romanesque church example is located
at a few kilometers away, in Saint-Austremoine.
Hiking trails allow you to discover the site and its surrounding nature.

This village perched high above the Lot valley is a site worth the detour. Its name might
come from vinum (wine) and cella (cellar).

Its church, remodeled many times, dates from the 11 century in its most ancient parts.

Its bell-tower positioned beside the actual church dates from the end of the 19 century
and shelters the “campana bèla”, a 250kg bell.
The Fountain Saint-Clair water was renowned to be beneficial for the eyes.
A village awarded in the contest “villages fleuris” (flowered villages)
Its two main hiking trails in a protected nature.

During the 12 century, Conques was noticed as
one of the major stopping place on the Via
Podiensis.
The “Guide du Pèlerin”, a Latin manuscript from the

12 century mentioned Conques, a crucial stop
along this route, in these words : "the most
precious body of the blessed Foy, virgin and
martyr, had been buried by the Christians in this
deep valley commonly called Conques, with all the
honors; they built above her grave a beautiful
basilica governed by the rules of Saint Benedict
seriously followed to this day to God's glory; many
benefits are provided to all, either healthy or sick; in
front of the basilica runs an excellent spring, which
virtues are more admired that can be said. Her

feast (Saint Foy) is celebrated on October, 6 ".
Nowadays, this thousand years old devotion is still
alive. Many pilgrims, increasing in numbers every
day, add up to the traditional pilgrims of the past, like
the modern hiker who, for multiple reasons, takes on
this cultural route. It is a privileged occasion for
humane connections and for the discovery of
exceptional heritage sites (architecture and arts).
Conques is one of the major stopping places on
the Via Podiensis, the road from Le Puy-en-Velay
towards Santiago de Compostela. This hiking trail
is well laid out since 50 years. It stands as the
most walked of all the French Compostela trails.
Distant of about 740 km, it is walked through
thirty stopping places until Saint-Jean Pied de
Port and it takes about two months to reach
Santiago from Le Puy.
This trail connects Meyrueis (South of France) and
Conques through Millau and Rodez.
From Rodez to Conques, this quite contrasted trail allows
you to discover a land with sharp hills in the Vallon, the
rich soils and the vineyards terraces. It counts an
exceptional panorama above Conques from the site of
Bancarel.

between Conques on the Via Podiensis (GR
65) and Toulouse, crossing point of the trail

from Arles on th Via Tolosana (GR 653),
through great touristic sites such as
Villefranche-de-Rouergue, Najac, Cordes…
Numerous trails allow you to hike in buckles (from
one to several hours).
Topoguides (French booklets only) are available
at the Tourist Office. The trail of the vineyards in
Conques (“Le chemin des vignes”) has its own
booklet adapted to hikers with visual disabilities.
To hike as a group or with your family, by foot or
with a trained donkey, some trails are also
possible on mountain bikes and adaptable to
disabled person with a joëlette or cross-country
wheelchairs.

Travel around our region by bike with different routes
crossing typical villages in a protected nature
(downloadable routes with the format GPX on your
GPS).
THE « FUN EBIKE » HIKE
Share a good time while biking on the “Fun ebike”
between Causse Comtal and Vallon of Marcillac.
Discover our region, in respect of nature, with the
"etricks", a hybrid between mountain electric bike
and motorcycle.

THE WORKS OF PIERRE SOULAGES
At the Musée Soulages, in one of the first exhibit hall,
visitors discover the preparation works for the stainedglass windows of Conques or « cartons » as well as a
video auditorium and a display case of artifacts. This room
presents also a new generation device to see the windows
in their natural setting in Conques with digital views in
sequence.
The discovery of the works of Pierre Soulages is
realized through two major sites of our local
heritage: Conques and its Romanesque church
nesting his 104 stained-glass windows and Rodez
with the Musée Soulages, where are exhibited his
paintings, engraved pieces and the preparation
works or “cartons” for the stained-glass windows of
Conques.

FESTIVITIES OF SAINT FOY – SUNDAY OCTOBER 9, 2016
Procession in honor of Saint Foy, young Christian girl martyred, whose relics are worshipped in Conques since 866.
The tradition goes on every year, on the Sunday past October 6th, day of her martyrdom. The fragments of her saint body are carried
to the devotion of the public and presented, during a procession towards the abbey-church in their goldsmith’s reliquaries, among
which the famous Majesty of Saint Foy.
Residents of Conques or the surroundings, groups of pilgrims, tourists or simple bystanders still participate nowadays in what stays
before anything else a religious and traditional festivity.
