Presidents Report
October 12, 2011
Clifton Padgett
This month marks the start of the AGHA show season. I am sure those that showed at Tulsa this
past weekend had a very good time . Louisville , Hastings and our Grand show in El Reno
Oklahoma are just around the corner. I joined the AGHA in 1990 and went to my first Futurity
in 1991. What a spectacle the event was. I think they had 850-900 birds there that year.
I met some very influential breeders at the first show . Jack Anderson, Ray Cottier , & George
Lechner were the first three individuals to greet me as my Daughter Andrea and I unloaded our
first show birds . Andrea was age 11 and of my 3 children she was the one that showed the
most interest in the pigeons. Andrea talked to George and Ray enough that before we left they
had graced her with some fabulous birds to get her started. IF I had listened to them and
mated the birds the next year the way they suggested we would have had better offspring to
show in 1992. At that point in time we had colors we liked so we mated them different ways to
get the colors we wanted to have. Andrea loved silver bars. She raised one the next year and
kept it as a pet and it survived I think for 8-10 years. We did not get many offspring from it but
it was a bird that could not be culled no matter what. I have had a fabulous time with my
pigeons over the years. IF you are new listen to the guys that have been in the hobby. Raise for
quality and paint the bird later. It took us many years to learn this but the axiom that Jack
Anderson , Ray Cottier and George Lechner stated about worrying about color last was so
accurate.
With Jack Andersons urging I became a youth leader in 1993 and have been active as an officer
since that point in time . Years Later I became the bulletin director during George’s tenure as
president . When Mike became the president I became the District director . The past 4 years I
have been president so I have served for around 18 years of the 21 that I have been a a
member. During these years we had shows in Hutchinson, Grand Island and later in Hastings.
Many friendships were cultivated and many good times competing with others in Oklahoma,
Nebraska and Kansas shows.
This will be my last report as president of the club . I wish you all good luck in the shows this
year. Enjoy the friends you develop in the AGHA , enjoy the atmosphere and if you are
fortunate enough to win a show or two share offspring from these pairs .The Attitude and
Aptitude of the club continues to be positive in future years if Share is in your Vocabulary. The
American Giant Homer. America’s Pigeon club of the Future .
Eastern V.P. Report, October 15,2011
Hello to all, What a year it has been here in Ohio, rain, rain ,rain! The weeds grew great and so did the
mosquitoes. I can't wait for a good killing frost! But what I am looking more forward to is the show season to
start. It has all ready started out in Oklahoma with the Tulsa show already being history, have not heard
anything yet but I look forward to seeing the results in the next bulletin. Our first show will be the National
Young Bird Show in Louisville, Kentucky. This is the largest allbreed young bird show in the country. For those
that have never attended, you don't know what you're missing. Five thousand plus young birds in every breed
imaginable! Several of the supply vendors and feed companies you see in the Pure Bred Pigeon Magazine will
be there. There is a big for sale section and a hall of food vendors that caters to most tastes. Jim Plowdrey takes
care of the Giant Homer meet and the numbers are growing. On Friday night there is a auction of
donated Giant Homers that the funds are used for premium monies to support the Giant Homer show. Put this
show on your schedule for next year, you won't be disappointed.
We are looking very much forward to the 1st district show in Des Moines, Iowa. We have never been to this
show but from what we hear this is a spectacular show. I am hoping to get a few new members started at this
show. We will be having an auction of exhibitor donated birds so if you are going and have something of quality
to donate bring it along and help the show. Ross Hunt will be handling the judging assignment. I believe this
will be his first time this far north in December, better pack your longjohns Ross you might be in for a very
"new" and "exhilarating" experience. I hope everyone can attend.
I would like to take this time to thank and congratulate Ruthmary Hunt and Pat Clark for organizing a
successful Pure Bred Pigeon breed of the issue. Our breed was represented and promoted professionally. I am
very proud and thankful for having people in our organization that have the patience for this kind of hard work,
it is no easy task communicating and bringing everyone together to participate in this kind of endeavor.
I have a question for everyone in our club. Have you ever been a member of the the National Pigeon
Association? If you were in the past and were disappointed with what you received for the cost of your
membership dues I suggest you give them a another chance and join today. They put out a great and
informative quarterly bulletin with a lot of helpful info and they keep you up to date on the upcoming shows and
National events. They have a very active yahoo chat group with many very experienced pigeon breeders that
will be more than happy to help you through any problems you might come across with your pigeons. As pigeon
breeders I believe it is in our best interest to support our National organization as they have and will represent
us when the need be. Whether it is representing you at your local zoning committee because they want you to
get rid of your birds or on a much higher level, perhaps someone from the American Humane Society decides
they don't like the way you or I doing things in our lofts even though what we are doing is normal practice. The
N.P.A. will do their best to represent you through these type of things. For more info and how to join

Well that's all I have for now. I hope everyone had a successful breeding season and I hope to see you all at the
shows.

“SHOWTIME”
It is the best time of the year. Temperatures are starting to cool
down and the leaves are starting to change, but the best part of the
season? Road trips! Going to the shows! By the time this bulletin
makes it to your mail box, Tulsa will be history. Unfortunately I wasn’t
able to make it to this year’s show, I had a car show and a dog show the
same weekend. The first bird show for me was a few weeks back with
the tumblers. Next up will be the National Young Bird Show, Oct. 29th,
followed with the show in Hastings on Nov, 5th. I’ll be judging the
cocks, so this should be an interesting show. On to the big show, El
Reno the weekend of Dec, 2nd, 3rd, unfortunately I won’t have any
young birds in the show, but I’ll be there in support of the Salt City
Gang! The last show for me will be Des Moines on Dec, 10th. We are
expecting a large turnout for this show, so if you have never made the
Des Moines show, you really should give it a try. I hope to see
everyone at these shows.
Well this has been a really disappointing year for me with my
Giants. I have been dealing with some weird stuff this year, and wasn’t
able to raise much of anything. Most of the fault falls on me, so I have
eliminated some of my problem birds and started over. The first order
of business will be going back to the individual breeding pens. I hope to
do much better next year.
The Giant Homer special seems to be a success, other than they
cut my article and somehow left Jim Barrett off the Master Breeder list
(sorry Jim), I thought it was pretty good. I wish I had a pen full of those
almonds! Everyone did a great job on it. A special thanks to Ruthmary
and Pat for all the hard work they put into it.
Finally, this may not be my last article as the western VP, I have
decided to seek another term with all the health care and benefits that
go with the job. I really enjoy working with the board members of this
club. There is a reason why this is one of the best Pigeon clubs in the
hobby, the dedication of the members and officers make this so!
Thank You All
Jeff
2nd District News and Views
By: Ross Hunt, 2nd District Director
Hello from the 2nd District! The show season is on with the Tulsa Show
held October 8 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Glenn Saucier, Ville Platte, Louisiana, came up Labor Day weekend to
spend some time at H & H .We missed his son Matt as he didn’t get to make the
trip to visit with his dad this time. We placed some Giants out in the show coops
and gave them a once over. Glenn is ready for the Futurity and will give everyone
a lot of competition this year.
Here at H & H we have had the best time since the Giant Homer Special
came out. We have received calls from a lot of established pigeon fanciers wanting
to get into American Giant Homers. They have all joined the Association.
Ralph and Phyllis Swire , came for a visit to H & H . We had met Ralph and
Phyllis when we were first getting back into pigeons at a show in Jennings,
Louisiana. They are long time pigeon breeders and they are very knowledgeable
about the birds. Be on the lookout for them in the show halls soon.
Mike Danos, Cut Off, Louisiana, retired commercial tug boat Captain/owner
came up and picked up a couple of pairs. Mike travels a lot and plans to come to a
lot of our shows. Don Toucheque, Clute, Texas, came up for a visit. We looked at
our Giant Homers and had a long discussion about the Giants. Don is a top pigeon
breeder with several breeds but wanted to get into the Giant Homers. Don took
home several pairs that should get him off to a good start in American Giant
Homers. Ken Jones and son Will, El Dorado, Ark, also came down to visit H & H to
get some Giants. Ken and Will are already into pigeons and after looking at our
Giants and talking about them they too left with several pairs of Giant Homers.
They are planning on coming to the Futurity. Mike, Don, Ken and Will are already
pigeon breeders, are getting into Giant Homers and have joined the Association.
As I mentioned before the show season kicked off Oct.7 and 8 with the 4th
District/Tulsa State Fair Show in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Curley Montet had Champion
Cock with an old Blue Check Cock and Mike Jones had Champion Hen with an old
hen. We will have to wait for the results to see who received the other honors.
The Louisville National Young Bird Show in Louisville,Ky. is next .It is a top
show with top breeders and some of the best young birds in the country.
Don’t forget the Futurity on December 2 & 3,2011 as well as the Iowa State
Pigeon Show in Des Moines, Iowa on December 9&10,2011. We are looking
forward to the Des Mines Show. I will be judging for the first time and it looks like it
is going to turn out to be a very good show. Ruthmary and I are really excited
about this trip.
We here at H & H hope everyone will support all the shows they can. Hope
to see each and everyone at a show this year! And as always-we hope you raise a
“Champion”!

Sept. 22, 2011
Dear Pat,
Enclosed is a picture of the reason that for the last two summers I have ended
up banding about 40 birds. Numerous small babies & fertile eggs would
disappear-- no trace. I knew what had to be causing the problem, but frequent
day & night visits to the loft came up empty.
However, 3:30p.m. August 16th , upon entering the loft, I heard a commotion, a
hen beating her wing against this snake and his head under her. (He had already
swallowed one of her eggs. I dispatched of him with great gusto and enormous
satisfaction! No problem since, but I did again get short changed on raising
numerous youngsters. Changed on raising numerous youngsters.
Look forward to seeing you at the Tulsa fair.
Best regards
Duane Crotty
Color Breeding Chart:
Giant Homers come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. We have dilute, reduced and fade,
plus many more possibility for whatever challenge you might be up for. The following is a color
breeding chart that Ron Simpson wrote. I have found it very helpful and a great little reference when I
get stumped on some wild color.
1. Blue Bar X Silver Bar = All Blue if cock doesn’t carry Silver. If so both colors in both sexes.
2. Silver Bar X Blue Bar = Silver hens, Blue cocks. This is a sex-linked mating.
3. Mealy X Blue Bar = All mealy if cock carries no blue. Otherwise, both colors in both sexes. Could
also get cream or silver hens if cock carries silver.
4. Blue Bar X Mealy = Mealy cocks, blue hens. Mealy hens are sex-linked to all intense colors. Silver
could result if cock carries it.
5. Mealy X Silver Bar = All mealy if cock carries no blue or silver. If cock does carry Blue then both
colors in both sexes. If cock carries silver or cream, you can get blue, silver, mealy or cream in both
sexes.
6. Silver Bar X Mealy = Sex-link, Mealy cocks, Silver hens.
7. Blue Bar X Cream Bar = If cock carries no silver, mealy cocks and blue hens. If cock carries silver,
then mealy or cream cocks and blue or silver hens.
8. Cream Bar X Blue Bar = If cock carries no blue or silver then cream hens and mealy cocks.
Otherwise, cream or silver hens and blue or mealy cocks.
9. Silver Bar X Cream Bar = Sex-linked. Silver hens, cream cocks.
10. Cream Bar X Silver Bar = If cock carries no blue or silver, all cream. Otherwise, both sexes. Blue
cock that has silver mother mated to silver hen will produce 50% each color and sex.
11. Recessive Red X Recessive Yellow = All Red if cock carries no yellow. Otherwise, both colors,
both sexes.
12. Recessive Yellow X Recessive Red = Sex-linked, red cocks and yellow hens.
13. Black X Recessive Red or Yellow = Depends on what color is masked by the red or yellow. No
reds or yellows unless cock carries it.
14. Recessive Red or Yellow X Black = same as above.
15. Recessive Red or Yellow X Any Bar or Check = same as above.
16. Any Bar or Check X Recessive Red or Yellow = same as above.

PUREBRED PIGEON SPECIAL
Pat Clark and I would like to thank each and every one of the American Giant Homer members
who participated in making the Purebred Pigeon American Giant Homer Special so great!
Although there were several errors and omissions, we still think it was an excellent way of
promoting the American Giant Homer.
Again thank you to all who helped us in this project…

Preparing for a Show
Pigeon Show Preparations by Doratha Connally Fall is the traditional time for most pigeon
shows and it’s never too early to begin preparing your birds to compete. Below are a few
simple ideas to help make your birds more competitive. (Items in red refer to the sidebar at
the right for sources or definitions.)
Feed and vitamins
It almost goes without saying that show pigeons need good quality food to develop overall
condition and beautiful feathering. Ask other breeders in you area what brands they use and
then experiment with what works for you. If isn’t necessary to feed the most expensive food
but you probably won’t get great results with the cheapest, either.
Some exhibitors give their birds pigeon vitamins (available from pigeon supply companies)
and believe that they add extra condition to the feathers and overall health. If you give the
water-soluble type you must clean your waterers every day as bacteria thrive in vitamins.
Bathe your birds
At least once a week, take a large shallow pan and fill it with about 4-5 inches of water.
Place it in your flypen or loft and watch the pigeons dive in — pigeons love to bathe.
There are various products that you can add to the bath water to help with feather
condition. These are sold by the pigeon supply companies. Or you can add a tablespoon of 20
Mule Team Borax which helps clean the feathers and feet and also helps kill feather lice.
Three to four days before a show, let your pigeons bathe. This allows time for the feathers to
redevelop their “bloom” before the show.
Check your birds for any sign of feather lice
The most typical louse is easily visible – usually inside the birds’ wings. They are brown, cigar
shaped and about 1/16th to 1/8th inch long. They feed on the feather material and if you
don’t get rid of them, they can actually chew tiny pinholes through the feather.
Many judges will instantly eliminate a bird from competition that has lice or more than a few
of these pinholes.
Treatment: There are various treatments, including powders and sprays. Again, check the
pigeon supply houses. One of the easiest treatments is Sevin dust. Place it in an old jar;
punch about 8-10 holes in the lid (kids get your parents to help you with this). Screw on the
lid. Wear a dust mask.
Holding the pigeon, shake a little onto the bird’s back; gently work it into the feathers. Then
powder under each wing and on the breast. It isn’t necessary to powder the entire bird. Keep
the powder out of the bird’s face, eyes and mouth. Powder your loft and the perches. This
needs to be done at least every 6-8 weeks.
According to Wendell Levi, author of THE PIGEON, it is probably impossible to get rid of
every single louse. But don’t let this deter you from battling these pests. They can ruin your
very best bird’s chances at the show.
Very Important: When using pesticides, wear a mask. Wash your hands thoroughly and change
your clothes after using any pesticides.
Trimming
This is the process of taking out unwanted feathers by plucking (and on some breeds cutting).
For example: If your breed standard has specified color markings and your bird has a feather
of the wrong color in the wrong place you will want to “trim” or pluck that feather. Some
breeds, such as Swallows, need to have broken or misshapen foot feathers removed about 6-8
weeks before the show so they will have time to re-grow.
Getting hold of a single pigeon feather can be tricky — take your time and be careful. You
don’t want to end up with a bald spot. Some breed standards allow for the judge to
disqualify a bird that has been obviously trimmed.
Always look for instructions about your breed or talk to a breeder before you start. Trimming
can make a bird look extremely sharp or can ruin it.

PIGEON SUPPLIES Available from several companies:

Search the Internet for more.
Bathing pans: Feed stores have many types of large shallow rubber or plastic pans. The
rubber type is best as they give traction for the birds’ feet. Remove the pan from the bird’s
area immediately after they finish bathing or they will drink the dirty water.
20 Mule Team Borax is available at many Wal-Mart stores and some grocery stores in the
laundry section. $3-$4 a box
Sevin dust and dust masks are available at most hardware stores and many garden centers.
DEFINITIONS
*Station means to stand confidently in the correct posture for your breed. Find your current
breed standard** on the Internet and read through it thoroughly until you get a mental
picture of your breed.
** Standard – Many pigeon breeds have written “standards.” These are guidelines for the size,
shape, colors and appearance of the breed. Judges reward birds that most closely resemble
their breed standard. Search the internet for “pigeon standards” or for your breed’s name.
SOURCES
If you want to buy your own show coop, contact your local pigeon club to ask if they have a
used one for sale. Or buy from Jedds Pigeon Supply
Indoor/outdoor carpeting is available at Lowe’s, Home Depot, some Wal-Marts and many
carpet stores.
Wood shavings are available from feed stores and farm supply stores.
Judging sticks are available from Office Depot and Staples (you may have to ask them to
order it from their catalog or order online.) Cost $3 to $5
Pigeon Magazine – More showing information is available from Purebred Pigeon
www.purebredpigeon.com, , a full color magazine devoted to all pigeon activities
Training No matter how beautiful your bird is, if it is terrified — flying all around the
judging coop or crouching in the corner — it probably won’t win. You need to train your bird
to understand the judging procedure so that it will be calm and station.**
To train your bird you need either an actual show coop or something very similar. Standard
show coops are 18x18x18 inches for large breeds or 15x15x15 for smaller breeds. They are
constructed of vertical wire bars with a vertical sliding door on the front. (See our “Pigeon
Show Results” page for examples of show and judging coops) The floor is usually plywood
covered with heavy paper sprinkled with wood shavings or indoor/outdoor carpeting.
Begin by simply placing the bird in the show coop. Do this gently and calmly. Allow it to stay
in the coop for 10-20 minutes. Remove it and return it to the loft. This process should be
done as calmly as possible so that the bird doesn’t associate the coop with fear.
Do this for several days, lengthening the time as you go. If you are involved in one of the
more popular breeds your bird may be in the judging coop for long periods of time at the
show.
After your bird seems calm in the coop, begin studying it just as a judge would. Slowly
extend your hand to the bars of the coop. Walk back and forth in front of the coop. Open the
door slowly and then close it. When your bird accepts this without fear, flatten your hand as
if you were going to shake hands with someone and slide you fingers through the bars. You
can direct your bird into or out of a corner doing this. Remove your bird from the coop and
inspect it as if you were judging it. Open out each wing and spread the tail feathers. Look
closely at its head and eye. Then return it to the coop. Wait a few minutes and then do the
whole procedure again.
Many judges use a judging stick. This is usually a metal fold-up pointer used for business or school
presentations. An old car antennae or thin dowel rod will work. Again, you must be very gentle in
getting your birds accustomed to the judging stick. The first day just unfold it and slowly wave it
in front of the coop and then over it. The next day, touch the bars of the coop. When the bird
shows no fear then you can begin to reach through the bars and very gently touch the bird on the
tail or under the breast. The judging stick is used to help encourage the bird to station correctly.
In a breed like Modenas, the judge would use it to encourage the bird to lift its tail; in American
Show Racers, the judge might push down on the tail. Again, read your standard and study other
birds of your breeds to know how your breed should station.
The tricky part of training is to not overdo it. You can make a bird so relaxed with the whole
procedure that it appears bored. So, train to the point where there is no sign of wildness and
then just a weekly quick refresher may be all the training your birds need.
Carrier or Crate – Getting Your Birds to the Show
How do you plan to carry your birds to the show? There are fancy boxes, baskets, metal
crates, etc. that you can buy through the supply houses. Some people make their own or use
cardboard boxes with lots of holes for ventilation. (Pigeons put off a lot of body heat and can
get too warm in a container without good ventilation.)
Ideally, each bird should be in its own compartment to minimize pecking. Place some wood
shavings in the bottom to give the bird traction and to absorb droppings. Just like the show
coop, it is a good idea to get your birds accustomed to traveling in their carriers. Load them
up the week before the first show and just drive around the block. This will also give you
practice in the process of loading your birds. And give you some idea of how much time you’ll
need the morning of the show to load up.
Again, three or four days before the show, allow your pigeons to bathe. Check for any odd
feathers that need removing and trim your bird’s toenails (unless your standard calls for
sharp toenails). Just the very tip needs to be removed. If you’ve never done this be careful
not to cut into the “quick” — the pink part that has blood supply.
The Day of the Show
Calmly load your birds into your carrier and place them on a level surface in your vehicle in
an area that is not too warm or too cold. You want this trip to the show to be as stress free
as possible for you and the birds. Give yourself plenty of time to get to the show with at
least a few minutes extra so that your birds have a chance to relax and get used to their
surroundings.
When you get to the show, find your show coops. These will have your bird’s band number on
a card attached to the front of the coop (your name may be on this card also). As you place
your bird in the coop, check it over — if there are any droppings on the feet or elsewhere,
wipe them with a barely damp paper towel or cloth.
Your coop should have a food cup and a water cup. Make certain that the water cup is full of
fresh water. Your birds may need a drink, depending on how long they have been in the
carrier. Dehydrated birds will not show well.
Pigeon shows are run in different ways so if this is your first event, find the show secretary or
show superintendent. Ask if you will be allowed to carry your birds up to the judging area or
if the club is using “runners.” (A runner is a person who carries birds from the show coop to
the judging coop). Then ask which judging area your breed will be judged at and when.
Times for judging are usually not set at exact times so you have to be flexible and watch
your judge to see when he/she is ready for your breed. Yours may be the very first breed to
be judged or it may be later in the day.
Don’t get upset or stressed — pigeon shows are usually very loosely run. The judge will wait
for you — within reason — and the other exhibitors will usually help you in any way they can.
DON’T get discouraged if you lose!! Every judge has a different opinion — your birds may lose
one week and win the next. For your first show season, try to learn as much as you can — to
develop an eye for your breed. Study the winning birds — how do they look different from
your birds?
Are they in perfect feather condition while yours are still molting? Are they in better weight?
Did they station well every time the judge looked at them? Is your bird just having a bad day?
Did it drop its tail or head when the judge was looking? Does the winning bird more closely
resemble the written standard for the ideal bird? Breeding and exhibiting an excellent bird is
an art — if it was easy there would be no reason for competitions. Be honest with yourself
about your birds — are they close to the standard?
After judging ask the judge his opinion of your birds, if he/she has time. Try to learn how to
help your birds win.
You may be one of the fortunate ones who starts winning in their first season. But for most,
it takes work and time. DON’T GET DISCOURAGED! Make the commitment to the sport of
showing pigeons — work to develop a winning line of birds that are beautifully presented at
each show.
You’ll have something to be proud of!
