As the son of a mechanic, Tom Hoover
had a passion for automotive engineering
that came honestly. In 1955, Hoover
joined Chrysler Corporation where he
helped unite a group of rebel engineers
named the Ramchargers. Their work with
high-performance engines elevated
Chrysler’s racing program and Hoover
and team were tapped to help build an
engine to win the Daytona 500. They came
up with the idea to fit hemispherical
cylinder heads on the 426 block, and what
followed is motorsports history. Not only
did Plymouth win the 1964 race — and lap
the rest of the field — Chrysler also
swept the podium. After the epic win,
Hoover received the green light to create
the street-legal 426 HEMI engine that
debuted during the ’66 model year and
earned him the nickname, “Godfather of
the HEMI.” Hoover even had a hand in the
creation of the modern 5.7-liter HEMI
engine. When in development, Chrysler
sent key engineers to his home to discuss
design issues and changes Hoover
wished he had made.
