Vanessa's Reflections:
Dear Friends,
I hope you all read the thick wad of reports for our Annual Meeting. Although our income is not too
good, we are growing into a healthy Church in many other ways! It was wonderful to have such a
strong slate of candidates for both the Vestry elections and the delegates to Diocesan Convention.
Although not everyone could be elected, every candidate would have been an excellent addition.
(Don’t forget everyone can attend Vestry meetings as observers, and may speak by invitation).
However, serving in this way is not the only way to be involved in the life and leadership of Good
Shepherd. The Vestry will be seeking new members for the various and important Committees that
assist with the smooth running and developing life of the parish. We also need Sunday School
teachers and someone to work with the Rector and Krista, who has already offered assistance, to
help oversee the Children’s Programs. If you are interested, please see me, or one of the Wardens
(Matt Ogle and Bill Jourdan).
We are also looking for someone who would take over from Ian to develop our website. Mitch Sears
at the Diocesan Offices has been tasked with assisting all parishes in upgrading their websites, ready
for the 150th Anniversary of the Diocese in 2017. As much encouragement, support and training as
necessary is available. So, if you are keen to make Good Shepherd’s web presence super smart and
efficient, speak to me asap.
Lent is a good time to reassess one’s life in God: our prayer life, our learning about God, our
contribution to the life and mission of our church. There are a number of resources available in church
and online to help you deepen your relationship with God. And there are plenty of opportunities for
you to engage in learning and action at Good Shepherd. Maybe you could try out Adult Forum? How
about signing up for some new form of Sunday service – Coffee Hour, Sunday School, Usher,
reader? And how about following Christ in loving and serving others through the Shepherd’s Fold,
The Shepherd’s Bowl or Family Promise? Maybe you could commit to going to the Episcopal Day at
the Legislature and speak up for the voiceless? Giving financially above and beyond your pledge (you
have submitted your pledge?!) is another way to respond to God’s love for you. It could be supporting
one of Good Shepherd’s ministries, including our work at St Anne’s, UTO, Episcopal Relief and
Development, or even the Rector’s Discretionary Fund, which assists both members of the parish and
others who seek assistance.
Whatever you choose to do this Lent, do make sure you give yourself extra time to be quiet with God,
so you can hear him speak to you, and fill your heart with a desire for justice, truth, forgiveness, love
and compassion for all.
May you make a good Lent, and find greater strength, courage and hope in your ongoing relationship
with God.

Family Promise – Update
Thank-you to those who have signed up as potential volunteers for Family Promise. It is great to see the support we have
for this. If you haven’t yet put your name down, please do so.
The Local organizing committee is making very good progress on this. Nine congregations have already signed up to host
Family Promise, leaving only 4 more to commit. Our Vestry will vote on this at our February meeting. A good many other
congregations unable to host have also signed up to support host congregations.
We have also been told that Fundraising for the Ogden branch of Family Promise can now begin. So, if you, or someone
you know, would be interested in giving a donation, large or small, please speak with the Rector.
This is an exciting and much needed ministry here in Ogden. There are 11,000 children in Utah officially designated as
homeless. This is one way to help families who are intentional in getting back into their own home and becoming selfsupporting again.
St Benedict’s Toolbox
There will be a meeting on Sunday 28th February at 12.00 noon for anyone who
would like to be part of a monthly group exploring the way of Benedict in our
daily lives.
Families, Youth and Children
There will be a meeting on Sunday 21st February at 12.15pm for parents and anyone else
who would like to discuss our Sunday and Not-on-Sunday programs for 2016.
This includes plans for our Summer event – CATHEDRAL DAY
(The Rector has some exciting materials for this!)

The Call
The forty days of Lent provide us the opportunity to
reflect on our lives, our relationships with our
neighbors, and the larger world as we move toward
the celebration of Christ's resurrection and the
season of Easter. It is a time for us to prayerfully
consider how we can unite in healing a hurting world.
Episcopal Relief and Development Lenten Booklets
Booklets for Lenten Meditation have been given to all the parishioners of Good Shepherd this year.
Please take one as you enter this time of prayer and reflection. With the books there are small
"hope"boxes. Please take one of these also. Throughout the Lenten season perhaps along with the
reading we can all gather coins in these boxes. There will be an in-gathering at Easter-time. The money
will go towards the world wide ministry of the Episcopal Church.
"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a
stranger and you welcomed me."
Matthew 25:35
USHER REQUEST
Good Shepherd has four teams of Ushers that serve every Sunday at the 10:30 Service.
They meet and greet all who come into our Church, hand out bulletins, take the sacraments to the
Altar, conduct the collection, take that to the Altar and on very crowded Sundays insure a smooth
flow of the congregation to and from the Altar for Communion. They also assist the Clergy when
they come to those who cannot make their way to the Altar and are served Communion.
These dedicated teams average one week a month and could use some help.
If you would like to volunteer your service to Good Shepherd by serving with this Ministry team,
please contact me and I will get you up-to-date, trained and scheduled.
Thank you for all you do for Good Shepherd.

Easter Gifts for Puerto Penasco
The last several years, Good Shepherd has generously sent gifts to the children of Puerto Penasco, Mexico.
This year we would like to send sun dresses to the girls and T-shirts for the boys for Easter as well as well
blankets for the newborns. The dresses that we sent the last two years whipped up quite quickly and turned
out darling! We have quite a stock of donated fabric that will make charming little dresses. We just need a
little help!
We will hold a sewing day on Saturday February 20st in the Good Shepherd basement. We will start at
10:00am and sew until 2 or 3. We will order lunch- so bring a few bucks! If you can come, we could use
your help. We need folks to cut the dresses, help with ironing, and others to sew. We need volunteers to
bring their machines and sewing supplies. We could use donations of wide double fold bias of assorted
colors for the shoulder ties as well as ribbons, appliques, and trim to fancy them up. ( If you purchase
some for us, please get the “wide double fold” – it is soooo much easier to use!) It is also nice to have
a seletion of lace, rickrack, ribbon and other trims to adorn them If you do not sew but would like to help,
we will accept donations to purchase T-shirts for the boys or you could shop yourself and bring in your
donations. Even the dollar stores have good quality T-shirts!
Along with the dresses and shirts, we will be sending ponchos. The Prayer Shawl Ministry has quite a
collection of donated yarn that would be perfect for this project. Any pattern will do! Crochet or Knit! So
come look through the yarn collection and help us out!
We will also send any baby blankets that you can whip up! Once again-- crochet, knit, fleece, or flannel! The
baby blankets are distributed to new moms with little of nothing for their newborns.
The Family of God Church in Puerto Penasco is working hard to help the people in that area. Many of the
children we are assisting live in poverty unlike any we see in our area. They are very appreciative of our gifts.
Cari Fullerton and her family have generously offered to deliver our gifts to the Family of God pastor. To
accommodate their travel schedule, please bring your completed item or donation to the church by March
1st. Easter is early this year!
If you have questions, contact Linda Garner

UTO
The United Thank Offering Prayer
Gracious God, source of all creation, all love, all true joy:
accept we pray these outward signs of our profound and
continuing thankfulness for all of life. Keep each of us ever
thankful for all the blessings of joy and challenge that come
our way. Bless those who will benefit from these gifts through
the outreach of the United Thank Offering. This we ask
through Him who is the greatest gift and blessing of all, Jesus
Christ. Amen.
The season of Lent is upon us. This is a time to reflect. Many of us will make a sacrifice of some
kind or increase time spent on prayer and meditation. Why not sacrifice 5 minutes each day during
Lent thinking about the things in your life that bring you joy? As you remember, offer your prayers
of thanksgiving to God and make a deposit into your Blue UTO Box. It is all too easy to forget to
thank God or if we do, we say things like, “Thank God for that,” and then we are done. God is
quiet and patient, He doesn’t scold us or remind us to say thank you like we do with our children.
During this season of Lent, keep your blue UTO box close. Offer your prayers of thanksgiving to
God and then strengthen those prayers by adding something to your box. It is one way you can
make a difference in the world.

A message from Deacon Nancy:
Episcopal Day on Tuesday, Feb. 23rd, is coming up and Nancy does not want to go alone! I bring people
from Good Shepherd every year and last year Suzanne Miller and kids (Sam, William, and Maggie) came
with me and had a great time and met their representative. It is a great experience and will give you a
chance to see the State Capitol and we will make you familiar with the legislative process and show you
where both the Senate and the House of Representatives meet. We will leave Ogden at 8am and attend
a meeting at 9am with the people from Coalition of Religious Communities and they will explain what bills
they are promoting and can tell you who your representatives are if you do not know. The agenda for the
morning is as follows: Orientation (goals for the day, what the legislature does, what CORC does,
CORC’s legislative priorities). Then we spend a couple hours on the floor of the House and Senate and
you have a chance to send in a note for your representative to come out and meet you. Then we have
lunch in the cafeteria and head for home. I can take three people in my car so please consider going with
me. Even if you have to take a day off work, it would be worth it for this experience. CORC works on bills
which help the poor—things such as Medicaid expansion, limiting pay-day loan institutions, and
promoting the development of low income housing.
