Red Mites are small insects that live in cracks and crevices in
cages and aviaries. They come out at night to feed on the blood
of your birds. To determine if you have mites, bunch up a white
handkerchief and place it above the nests or perches overnight.
In the morning, carefully unfold the handkerchief and look for
small red or black spots in the creases. If you do have mites
Avian Insect Liquidator safely eliminates them. In outdoor flights,
you will want to treat on a routine basis to prevent infestations.

Tips to Keep your Birds Healthy!
Remember not all breeders are alike in safety measures to protect their
birds from disease. To the untrained eye, unhealthy birds can appear
healthy. Thus ALWAYS Quarantine new birds before adding them to the
flock. Make sure you treat them with SCATT and monitor them for other
ailments at least 4-6 weeks. Our quarantine kit is a must for all bird
owners. Like have a first aid kit in the house, a quarantine kit is a must for
bird owners. If you bird becomes sick, you have very little time to react. If
you must order it and have it shipped, it may be too late. Thus we
recommend you have it on hand at all times.

MEASURING SUPPLEMENTS & MEDICATIONS
Daily Essentials 1 - This powdered vitamin/mineral supplement is to be diluted in water. It
is the Daily Essentials product that you should use if you have only a small number of birds.
For each 400ml of water you will need to add 1 level teaspoon of powder. You can use your
cooking spoons if you prefer, but the teaspoon that is provided with the product is a
teaspoon measurement.
Daily Essentials 2 - When this vitamin/mineral supplement is properly diluted in water, it is
exactly the same product as Daily Essentials 1. The powder itself is in a more concentrated
form and therefore should be used when you will be mixing large quantities of drinking water
at on time (20-30 pairs of finches or 5 -15 pairs of larger birds). The container states to mix
5g (the measuring spoon included) to 5 liters of water. This can be broken down as 1g (1/4
teaspoon) per 1 Liter (1000ml) of water.
Saniclens - Saniclens is used both in your bird’s drinking water and to soak seed or spray
millet. The measurements are the same for both uses: .5ml (1/2ml) per liter of water. In
order to make this measurement you will need a hypodermic syringe without a needle
attached. Remember, most syringes state “cc”s on their measurement scales. (“cc” is
equivalent to “ml”s in this regard.)
Calciboost - When I ship out orders of Calciboost, I include a small metric-measuring cup
to use in measuring this product. It has graduated measurements on it from 5 to 30 ml. If
you are using well water as the drinking water for your birds, start with 10mls of the
Calciboost in each quart of water you mix. If you are using municipal water, then start with
15mls. This amount should be adequate, however if any of your hens experience eggbinding during the breeding season, then up the amount of Calciboost by 5mls until the eggbinding stops happening. The bottle states that you should add 10-20mls of Calciboost per
1 liter(1000ml) of water. If you only need 500ml you should use 5-10ml of Calciboost. In hard
water areas, smaller quantities can be used. During breeding season, your birds should
receive the Calciboost every other day. During non-breeding season, give it only one day
per week. I recommend that you do not mix up more product than will be used in 2 days
since exposure to ultraviolet light breads down the potency of the product. So if you only
have a few birds, you should mix smaller amounts each time.
Guardian Angel & Energize
Both of these products are mixed by adding 1 level
teaspoon provided to 150ml of water. Most definitely mix
this product daily or more frequently if it is soiled by food or
bird droppings.

MEASURING SUPPLEMENTS & MEDICATIONS (con’t)
Amtyl - This medication should also be mixed fresh daily
50 ml = 1/8 teaspoon
100 ml = 1/4 teaspoon
200 ml = 1/2 teaspoon
400 ml = 1 teaspoon
Coccivet - You will again need a hypodermic syringe in order to make this measurement
in smaller quantities. The bottle states 15ml of Coccivet in 10 liters of water. Therefore 1
liter of water (1000ml) will require 1.5ml of Coccivet and 500ml of water will require .75ml of
Coccivet. For smaller quantities mix 1 drop in 30ml of water.
Ronivet-S - This medication should be mixed fresh every day. You will only want to mix up
the smallest quantity that will be needed so there isn’t too much wasted at the end of the
day. The Ronivet-S container states that you should use the enclosed measuring spoon
(4g) to make 4 liters of liquid. Unless you are a very large breeder, you will need to break
this down into smaller amounts. The Ronivet-S instructions read as follows:
4 liters = 4 g (measuring spoon included)
1 liter = 1g (1/4 teaspoon)
500ml = .5g (1/8 teaspoon)
My experience has shown that the mixing rate on the jar has not been effective with small
birds. The manufacture suggested that I mix Ronivet-S at four times the suggested rate:
1 liter (1000ml) = 1 teaspoon
500 ml = 1/2 teaspoon
250 ml = 1/4 teaspoon
125 ml = 1/8 teaspoon

PREPARING FOR BREEDING SEASON
We have gone through the importance of giving your bird supplements like our Daily
Essentials and Calciboost on regular basis during non-breeding seasons. So now that your
bird is in superb health it’s time to prepare for breeding season. Before placing your nests,
there are some things you need to do to insure a successful breeding season.
1. Treat your birds with Ronivet-S
Since most water sources have low levels of protozoa, which can be lethal to young chicks
and embryos, it is essential to treat your breeder birds with Ronivet-S prior to their breeding.
Protozoa normally does not cause problems for healthy adult birds, but since young chicks
and embryos do not have fully developed immune systems, they can easily succumb to
these protozoa. By treating your breeders with Ronivet-S prior to breeding, you can
effectively eliminate these protozoa which results in fewer dead-in-shell and early chick
deaths.
2. Emulate nature with Proboost Supermax & Breeding Aid
Now you must help your breeder birds enter breeding conditions
by increasing the quality of your bird’s food just like in nature.
The way to do this is by slowly adding Proboost Supermax to
their diet until you have reached full breeding levels. This sends
a signal to the birds that the food is rich, plentiful and they stand
a good chance of successfully breeding. Proboost contains
organic acids for better shell structure and essential fatty for
improved fertility and chick development. It’s important to
continue with the Proboost until the chicks are independent.
3. Increase the Calciboost intake for your breeder birds.
During non-breeding season, Calciboost should be administered 1-3 times per week.
However during breeding season, it is essential to increase the Calciboost dosage to 3-5
times a week to provide the extra calcium needed for egg laying and chick growth.
Remember a lack of calcium can cause thin shelled eggs, egg binding, smaller clutch size,
poor bone formation and splay legs in chicks.
4. Enjoy your birds …

Breeding Season Tips
Birds come into the breeding season as the food supply increases
and becomes richer. Thus to help your birds prepare for breeding
season, it is imperative to add a supplement like Proboost Super
Max and Breeding Aid to provide your bird that increased nutrition.
Also increase their calcium intake by administering Calciboost 5
times a week instead of just once.

Which nest is right for my bird?
Since different species of birds like different
nesting materials and nesting boxes, it is
important to know which nesting material to
purchase for your bird. Even then some birds
in the same species prefer different types of
materials. As you see to the left, we offer our
birds a variety of different nesting options.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR NEW BIRDS
Purchasing Birds “Sight Unseen”
If you purchase birds that you have not seen but have had shipped to you, give them
several hours after placing them into their new home to settle down before evaluating.
Remember that birds that have spent 24 hours inside a shipping box may have soiled vent
feathers unless they had perches on which to stand during shipping. Furthermore, they
are also stressed, so peace and quiet will be greatly appreciated until they acquaint
themselves with their new surroundings. If you are at all unsure of the birds’ health upon
arrival of the shipment, you make want to make an appointment with an avian vet to have
them checked out. All reputable breeders will allow a veterinarian to check their birds.
First Things First
The first thing that I do when receiving new birds is a thorough spraying of AIL (Avian
Insect Liquidator). This product is entirely safe for all birds and will not injure even their
eyes. It is used to control mites or parasites that may be on the birds. If you bring the
bird’s home in a small cage or carrier, I would suggest spraying them while they are still
inside this enclosure. In a small space it is easier to get the spray on the birds and the
spraying will kill any parasites that have crawled off the birds and onto the cage. If the
birds were shipped to you, this step will be slightly more difficult. As long as the birds will
not be housed in a large open flight, you can release them into their new cage and spray
them there. If they are going to eventually reside in an enclosure that is very large, I would
suggest that they be placed within a smaller cage for the duration of the quarantine. This
will allow them to more easily find their food and water sources and allow you easier
access to catching them when treating for air-sac mites. The AIL is one time spraying, but
it can be repeated in 6 weeks if necessary.
Find A Quiet Corner
I set up my new arrivals in a cage in a quiet corner of my office. They will not set foot into
my bird room for at least 45-60 days. They are given daily my Lady Gouldian finch seed
mixture, along with dry eggfood, oyster shell, cuttlefish bone and my homemade egg food
mixture. Everyday they are offered a different green (spinach, romaine, lettuce, parsley,
turnip greens, beet or carrot tops etc., the darker the green food the better.) They very
seldom will eat either the greens or the softfood because Gouldians are notorious for not
eating nor even trying anything new in their diet.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR BIRD OWNERS
Change Treatments Daily
All of the treatments involved in my quarantine procedures are mixed daily, so for this
reason I suggest you purchase a small water tube or medication tube so that you will not be
wasting the medications nor treatments. I do not use the water tube on a constant basis,
but whenever I have to mix anything daily they are invaluable and cost efficient.
Stress – A Major Factor in Mortality
For the first 5 days the water source that they are offered is Energize. It is a booster, which
raises the electrolyte content in the system of stressed birds. Stress can be a major factor
in mortality at this point if there are ANY underlying health problems. When a bird becomes
stressed, their normal bodily functions do not operate properly. The Energize gives them
an added boost. Without the presence of any disease factors, the Gouldian should come
though the stress of moving just fine. During these first five days I leave the birds quietly by
themselves.
Air Sac Mites
After this time period I treat the birds for air-sac mites with Scatt. I treat once with Scatt and
found that I do not have to retreat again. I apply one drop of Scatt directly to the birds skin,
NOT mouth. If the infestation is too great when the Scatt is applied, the air-sac mites die,
clog the air passageways and the bird suffocates within days. If there are no mites, the
birds seem to be unfazed. If the infestation is only moderate, the birds will “frump up” for a
few days but rebound quickly after they have expelled the dead mites. Please note: don’t
hesitate in carrying out this step so that your birds don’t die. If “heavily infested, you will
only be postponing the inevitable. All Gouldians that have air-sac mites left untreated and
multiplying will eventually die form a secondary respiratory infection or suffocation.
Probotic Treatment
At the end of the 5-day Energize treatment, I change the drinking water for two days to
water fortified with Probotic. This product adds the necessary gut flora that should be but
are not always present if the diet has been deficient. Probotic is composed of dried
bacteria, which are normally found in the intestines. When added to water these bacteria
come “alive” and return the conditions in the gut to normal. Because Probotic contains
normal live bacteria it MUST NOT be added to water containing antibiotics or antiseptics as
these will kill the good bacteria in Probotic.
Coccidiosis a Chronic Problem
I have found over the years that perhaps the most chronic problem that can occur in
Gouldians is coccidiosis and along with this cochiosomosis.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR BIRD OWNERS
Coccidiosis
Diarrhea, weight loss, dehydration and sudden death are signs of Coccidiosis. Birds may
also appear listless and depressed. The Coccidia are protozoan parasites that live in the
lining of the bird’s intestine. Birds are unable to absorb nutrients from their food. This will
eventually lead to death in some birds. The Coccidiosis is passed between the birds by
eating another bird’s droppings. These eggs contained in the droppings are quire small.
Diagnosis is made by examining the droppings under a microscope.
Juveniles dying at 10-12 weeks of age
If your adult birds are infected during the breeding season, you will most likely start loosing
your juveniles at 10-12 weeks. The nestling are infected very early on and degeneration of
the liver begins. At 10-12 weeks there is so little liver function left that the juveniles begin
to drop weight and “waste away”. I, therefore, treat for both problems as the next step in
my quarantine procedure. I use Coccivet for the treatment of Coccidiosis. I find it to be
very effective. You can have you vet perform a fecal examination to check for both of
these problems. If he finds nothing, you may be able to skip this step. However, if your vet
is at all doubtful of the presence of Coccidiosis, I would highly suggest that he/she allow
you to treat for it. Coccidiosis is sometimes hard to find in a fecal sample, because the
“bug” responsible for has several states during it’s life cycle. Your vet will direct you on the
usage and duration of the drug to treat Coccidiosis. After the treatment for Coccidiosis, I
again put Probotic in the water for two days.
Cochiosomosis
Cochlosomosis is the most serious protozoan infection of the Gouldian Finch. It is
especially a problem in young birds from the age of six weeks until the end of molting. The
main signs of the illness are watery droppings, which contain undigested seed, molting
problems and apathy. I use the product, Ronivet-S, for prevention of cochiosomosis. It is
mixed daily for a 7-day period. Ronivet-S can be safely used at any stage in the birds
breeding cycle. My vet has advised me that Cochiosomosis disease will only be controlled
and not eradicated by the use of drugs. He says that eradication can only be achieved by
breeding Cochlosoma Resistant Gouldians in a well-managed aviary. Two more days of
Probotic follow the Ronivet-S.
Worm Out Gel
Worm Out get for any worms present in the bird is my next step. This is a two-day
treatment administered in the drinking water. If I am not absolutely sure where the birds
originated, I always include it in my quarantine procedure. Worms can cause problems as
they interfere with the absorption of nutrients in the intestines. If they build-up to large
numbers, they can cause an obstruction in the intestines. Birds housed outdoors are most
susceptible to worms. I finish up with a few more days of Probotic in the water.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR BIRD OWNERS
Boost the Diet
At this point you will need to start adding calcium, vitamins and minerals to your bird’s diet.
Because most Gouldians eat nothing but seed and will not eat soft food (eggmeal, fruit or
vegetables) or greens, I suggest that you add Calciboost and Daily Essentials to the
drinking water for three days, the Daily Essentials without the Calciboost for 4 days. This
procedure is repeated until you can get your birds eating soft food, at which time you could
add Daily Essentials 3 to the hardboiled egg or dry eggmeal moistened with Calciboost.
This procedure is covered more thoroughly in the Diet section. By now you should have
had ownership of the birds for around 45 days. I usually then watch them for another two
weeks, paying particular attention to their droppings. If all seems well after that, I will
introduce them to my large flight or a cage with their new mate. Always remember that if
you purchase a number of birds at the same time, but from different breeding sources, you
should carry out the above steps in separate cages. If you mix them all together, you could
be infecting healthy birds unnecessarily.
Limited Use of Antibiotics
I don’t like to use antibiotics unless I am aware of a specific problem, which can be
eradicated by a specific antibiotic. If during the quarantine process your new birds begin to
frump and tuck their heads or seem to be eating large quantities of food constantly, this
should be an indication that something isn’t right. Handling the birds through the
quarantine period to check on their body weight is a good practice. You will be doing this
each week during the time you are treating for air-sac mites, particularly check the breast
area. If the breastbone begins to protrude, they are wasting away or “going light”. One
indication that this is happening is the constant eating that I mentioned above. They are
eating huge quantities of food because they are not getting the proper absorption form their
food. Therefore, they continue to eat trying to fill themselves. This symptom of “constant
eating” will also happen if the birds are in a continual state of stress because of improper
function of their digestive processes. If their housing and diet are proper, then go back to
your avian vet so that he/she might see if there is an infection that might be helped by
antibiotics. I use Amtyl a broad-spectrum antibiotic if I have a need.
Repeat for the Breeding Season
In most instances, I repeat the above procedure every year, starting 2 months before
breeding season. This will get my breeders in top form before they experience the stress of
raising young. It will also ensure healthy offspring. If I suspect a problem at any time
throughout the year, usually judged by the droppings or listlessness in my birds, I will have
a fecal test done by my vet and proceed according to the results of the test.

METRIC CONVERSIONS
Most of the products that I am currently using are manufactured and packaged in England
and Australia. It is for this reason that the measurements called for in mixing the products
are in METRIC terms. Since most of us in the States are not familiar with the metric
standards, I get calls and e-mails regularly asking how to mix the products. I have found
that quite a few of the products call for quantities to be mixed that are far too large for the
typical hobby bird keeper. Moreover the measuring spoons provided are for this large
measurement. Below I am going to give you and approximate equivalent in our American
measurements. Remember that these are only approximations.
For measuring 1 liter and larger quantities of Milliliters, I suggest you purchase a 4 cup
Pyrex measuring cup (or a 1 cup if you find that you never mix more than 1 cup of liquid
per day).
For measuring smaller quantities of milliliters (i.e. .5ml, 1ml) you will need a hypodermic
syringe without a needle attached. I suggest that you use a 1cc or 1ml syringe instead of a
2cc or 3cc syringe, as it will be easier to see the liquid for smaller amounts.
